also potentially a hot take (we’ll see lol) but as much as i love david tennant and ten i do not think his version of “vincent and the doctor” (with any of the companions to be clear) would have been as moving as matt smith and karen gillan’s take on the episode; i think a ten era approach would have been too glib and i think that the bittersweet but deep earnestness of series five makes that episode as emotionally moving and resonant as it is

“The way I see it every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don't always soften the blow of the bad things but vice versa, the bad things don't necessarily spoil the good things or make them unimportant.
And we definitely added to his good things"

Just watched Vincent and The Doctor. If there ever comes a day where I don’t sob at Vincent in the museum, I’ve died inside. Because truly… it makes me absolutely weep. Not tear up, but full on cry every single time I watch it. Even thinking about it, will make me tear up.
Hands down my favorite episode.
I think the fact that I first saw it, while I was in the absolute depths of my own depression, it just… resonated a little close to home.

The amount of 11th Doctor episodes that are him going 'Hey why don't we do something FUN for a change? Let's have a nice vacation or something' only for it to end TERRIBLY is absolutely hysterical.
'Hey why don't we visit a tourist planet?'
'Let's go to Utah!'
'Uhhhh moon theme park?'
'Clara would you like to go to a fun space festival?'
'...how about we chill in New York?'
'Let's, mmmmm, go to Venice! Venice is nice and romantic, you two have fun!'
'FUCK okay hey Amy wanna go visit legendary artist Vincent Van Gogh?'
'OKAY AMY AND RORY WE ARE GOING TO HAVE A STAYCATION AT YOUR HOUSE.'
It just! Keeps! Happening! The narrative conspires against him
#doctor who#11#the eleventh doctor#eleven#amy pond#titi talks#what about curse of the black spot. i forgot how that episode starts#also i know slow invasion isn't a vacation he's there to observe. but still.#clara oswin oswald#vincent and the doctor was originally just him taking amy to a museum#and that's not even getting into the original episode concept

Given that most people here follow me because of that Vincent and the Doctor post from a few years back, and given that the episode titles for series 14 (season 1?) have just been released, now might be a good time to mention that I have started a Doctor Who podcast: My Girlfriend and Doctor Who.
The podcast is available on YouTube, Spotify, Amazon Music and Apple. Subscribe, follow, rate five stars - all that good shit.

Gotta admire Doctor Who for making me either seriously dislike or love minor characters in usually just one episode
Long after watching them I still think of how lovely Gwyneth, Tallulah and Sally Sparrow were whereas I skip over Planet of the Dead specifically b/c of Lady Christina and Joan really ruins the Human Nature two-parter for me
Also I noticed in RTD’s era both the Doctor and Rose/Martha/Donna interacted with others vs in what I’ve seen of Eleven’s era so far the Doctor usually leaves behind his companions to interact with minor characters by himself
#doctor who#rtd's era#anti moffat#ninth doctor#tenth doctor#rose tyler#martha jones#donna noble#i wanted sally to join the team so bad#rose talking to the plumber on her first trip is forever precious#donna comforting the woman who had the visions in the pompeii episode#martha consoling tallulah#rtd era my beloved#although amy's interactions with vincent was super cute too#i feel like eleven's era is missing something#moffat salt#my ramblings

Well we finally got more than one episode into Season 8 of DW, so as we are now officially over halfway, here is my favorite episode of each season. We must keep in mind that “favorite” does not mean “best”.
Season 1
Boom Town is amazing. The Jack/Rose/Nine polycule is canon. The stakes are pretty low so it’s mostly interpersonal drama. Minor villain redemption. It has everything. Season 1 is my favorite season and I don’t think there’s an episode I don’t like but I LOVE this episode.
Season 2
This is cheating (already) but welcome to the only non-finale two parter that is any good! Love this one. Rose is trying to parent trap her divorced parents again despite the fact that their relationship is no good. There’s a random gay extra who is alternate dimension Mickey’s boyfriend. They give the cybermen feelings. And this will all come back in a big way at the end of the season (something that rarely happens well in DW). Great stuff truly.
Season 3
I find the final two episodes super underwhelming, but this episode that sets them up is SO GOOD. I think the plot/mystery is compelling, there’s a beautiful bug alien woman, Martha and Jack get to hang out, Ten breaks up with Jack officially…..lots happens in one episode. Also they do very well with the apocalypse visuals.
Season 4
This episode is good stupid fun. Donna and Ten are at their best when they get to be a little silly with it, which is exactly what “Agatha Christie murder mystery except the murderer is a bee alien who has learned the plots of her novels via psychic necklace” is.
Season 5
How are we already to Eleven…I love him so much, and I really love that he has to pretend to be a normal guy and weird roommate. I don’t even care about the alien plotline. I wish this whole episode was Eleven’s great month as a human. Yes James Corden is there which may be off putting. But I think his time on DW is his career peak.
Season 6
Season 6 has lots of really really good episodes. And sadly for those episodes, my favorite is the follow up James Cordon episode. SORRY ITS SO GOOD. it’s so good. No further comments.
Season 7
So my big issue with the Eleven + Amy + Rory trio is that they really push this dynamic in the dialogue that doesn’t seem to actually exist in the show. Like, Amy spends her first season in love with Eleven and on the rocks with Rory, Rory is there to make sure she doesn’t cheat on him, and Eleven is the number one Amy/Rory shipper. It’s not great to me. The dynamic does change and get better throughout season 6 but the relationship drama with Eleven is just never any good and you never buy the idea that they’re all very good friends. Power of Three FINALLY perfects the dynamic and is just great fun to watch. And of course Eleven is, as always, at his best having to act like a normal guy living through time in a normal way.
#honorary mention to the following episodes that didnt make the cut#season 4 finale where torchwood is there and also everyone cuts the roast beast#and also turn left#s4 ep with merlin from merlin#s3 ep with andrew garfield (not a good episode but a great time)#s2 ep with K9 and the weird dinosaur alien with gay subtext#blink (obviously)#vincent van gogh episode#fear hotel episode#amy gets trapped in a facility episode#clara as a dalek#so much fun shit happens on DW and i love all of it#theres also so many episodes that are bad but they have one amazing moment of joy and humor and stupidity#the haunted house ep with eleven and the crooked man is such a good example with its stupid ending#zoeposting#dw rewatch#doctor who

@humoriffic They are. His expression looks like he’s uncomfortable about the topic out of context, but it’s because there was a running gag for two incarnations of the Doctor that he was disappointed he wasn’t ginger (redhaired) yet.

okay, I don't know how much sense this is going to make but its been bugging me so bear with
you know how sometimes when people in a fandom go long enough without going back and rewatching/rereading/relistening to/rewhatever, that they end up with slightly warped ideas about the characters and story that are far more based on fanon than anything in the source material. I think the same thing happens with criticisms of shows, some mild critique people had at the time becomes so pervasive and considered so all consuming that it no longer gels with the source material
what got me thinking about this was reading the tags in the @adventure-showdown tournament. a not uncommon thing I read is saying they only remember a single great moment from an episode, but they remember the other story completely, so the other story must be magnitudes better. and when someone is implying that because they only remember the gallery scene from vincent and the doctor, the surrounding episode wasn't worthwhile or even any good, I can't help but think, when was the last time you watched it? was it in 2010 when it aired, if you don't remember anything other than the scene that is regularly shared, and you're criticising based on your lack of memory alone, that just doesn't end up gelling with the episode, its not really a fair criticism
more broadly, half the criticisms I see of Moffat who are almost nonsensical to me as someone who does rewatch. (I'm not going to go into the sexism stuff, my opinions on that are far too nuanced and complicated to make a good example)
one of the most common criticisms is that it made the doctor too important, which every time I see it I can't help but wonder if the person saying it even watched in the first place. Because the thing is this is an idea the moffat era actively engages in constantly, and its not a late development at all, and the conclusion it constatly comes too is that the doctor's ego is too big, he's not as important and powerful as he, or the companions, or the audience percieve him to be.
in eleven's second episode, his plan for the star whale is wrong, it's amy who concludes the star whale won't run away and wants to help. in the series 5 finale, eleven makes a big speech to all his enemies gathered above about how they're afraid of him, and it doesn't work, it is at best a minor delay in their plan, he still ends the episode trapped in the pandorica, AND it turns out the doctor was not the excistential threat they were trying to stop, its the TARDIS, they're only imprisoning him as they (wrongly) think he's the only one capable of flying her
in series 6, in a good man goes to war, after the doctor is done parading about the place, after he's done with his massive ego trip and thinking he's won the day, it turns out he hasn't, he got amy back, but not her baby, melody is gone, and any reuniting that happens later in the series has nothing to do with him in any meaningful sense. a good man goes to war is the doctor getting cocky and it ends badly for his friends
its only more explicit in the capaldi era whre 12 regularly pushes back against people considering him anything more than a guy pottering about the universe in a box helping where he can. yes he is made president of earth, but he doesn't want that, he doesn't want authority. In fact series 10 has several of his most meaningful loses, in extremis there's nothing he can do but get a message out, in oxygen he loses his sight to save bill, in the pyramid at the end of the world the world enters a state of dystopia because bill wants to save him, in the doctor falls he loses everything, including his life, only the audience knows any differently
'moffat made the doctor too important' is not a criticism that gels when you actually watch the show, because it is something his era grapples with, is the doctor powerful, is he important to the universe, and if he is, is it a problem and who for. but the criticism isn't completely unfounded, not liking the material fact that 12 got made president of earth is fine, but 5 years removed its a criticism thats warped and changed into something unrecognisable as a criticism of the show its from, when the show says at one point, not even as subtext, that 12 is just a guy travelling around in a blue box, dropping in and helping out where he can.
anyway, this is helpful to me in that i don't like assuming people are speaking in bad faith, sometimes people do just haven't rewatched recently
#doctor who#i do have another exaple but i think i'll leave this one in the tags#when people say that moffat had the doctor meet someone as a child and then that child once they grew up fell for the doctor#4 times#which is at best disengenuous#and at worst just a lie#is it weird it happened at all#sure#but its blown out of proportion#renette yes that did happen#amy no thay kissed and it was weird and he thought it was weird#but amy hadn't fallen in love with him#and she never did#she was spiralling about marrying rory#river is a massive stretch#i don't remember the doctor ever even exchanging words with her as a child#clara is even more of a stretch#they are not in romantic love textually#maybe clara had a crush on eleven#and again i think he might have said about two words to her as a child#there is no chance she even remembers the encounter#okay done now i think

Doctor who for the ask game! :)
Thank you! :) Well, I've only seen New Who, and I'm midway through series 8, so anything before or after that won't count for these answers.
my favorite female character: Rose Tyler
my favorite male character: Tenth Doctor (the Doctor is genderfluid, but I'll say Ten is presenting male so he counts for this answer)
my favorite book/season/etc: Series 2 or Series 4
my favorite episode (if its a tv show): I always had a soft spot for The Shakespeare Code because I love Shakespeare, but the references to the TERF who shall not be named kind of ruin it, so I guess now it's Vincent and the Doctor.
my favorite cast member: again I don't follow the actors super well, but probably David Tennant or Christopher Eccleston for being, from all evidence I've seen, excellent humans. *knocks on wood*
my favorite ship: Ten/Rose (other ships I ship: NineRose, NineRoseJack, Eleven/Amy/Rory, Amy/Clara, Clara/Eleven, a little bit Clara/Twelve, and I know I'm going to be a Thirteen/Yazmin fan when I get there)
a character I’d die defending: I won't stand for companion slander. Rose, Martha, Donna, Amy, Rory, and Clara are all excellent and I love them.
a character I just can’t sympathize with: I don't care for River Song, I'm sorry. I feel sorry for her being separated from her parents, but I don't much like her.
a character I grew to love: the Twelfth Doctor is slowly growing on me. I really didn't like him at the start, but I think I'm going to end up liking him a lot by the time I finish his seasons.
my anti otp: Ten/River (she has Eleven and Twelve, she can back up off Ten and give him back to Rose please)

Me rewatching Eleven’s Era and realizing that some of my favorite one-off episodes of the show are there (Vincent and the Doctor, God Complex, Power of Three, for example) but that the entire Era is just kind of stained by early-Moffat's fingers all over it bc every single arc-developing episode (Day of the Moon, Big Bang, Good Man Goes to War, Let's Kill Hitler, Wedding of River Song) is ruined by either his need to be "clever" with the Silence (which literally never got a resolution EVER, btw) OR with River Song and the ENDLESS sexism in her plots/hee being nothing more than a "sexy badass" whose entire life, birth to death, is set up for her to be groomed into the Doctor’s killer and then immediately goes to being infatuated with him to the point where even her one interesting/seemingly "for herself" character traits she has (being an archaeologist) is retrofitted to be about finding a "good man" aka the Doctor OR just the ways that Amy's rather interesting story about the ways that the Doctor abandoning her after getting inserted into her life at such a young age/her slowly getting disillusioned/realizing she prefers a life on Earth is just YOINKED in a sexist direction with the whole "getting pulled for half a season in order to pop out a baby/not getting to search for that baby/leaving Rory bc she finds out that she is infertile and somehow that makes her unable to be a good wife" storyline that honestly hurts a lot of otherwise good episodes (such as Rebel Flesh/Almost People) and absolutely TANKS others (looking at you, Asylum of the Dalek). And that's not even getting into the act that LITERALLY EVERY FEMALE CHARACTER is attracted to Eleven, save the two canonical lesbians, one of which he kisses without her consent, which really puts a damper on the Rory/Amy romance in Season 5 until they figured out how to write it better from Amy's end in Season 6.
Like, I really think that Eleven, Amy, Rory, and River all had interesting arcs/foundations that could have led to good storylines/arcs. And in some places, they did. But even though I've gained a new appreciation for certain episodes/certain arcs (such as Amy's aforementioned growing up/past the Doctor arc), there is this undeniable stench of sexism/bad writing that hits all of the tentpole episodes of this era that makes it so hard to rewatch. While there are some episodes of RTD that I don't rewatch due to them being boring or just not my cup of tea (and I do have criticisms of how he handled race/Martha/Mickey), I don't have the same bad taste in my mouth for him that I do for Moffat.
(Oh, and one of the few episodes from RTD's run that I refuse to rewatch due to a bad taste is Girl in the Fireplace. So do with that as you will.)
#doctor who#anti moffat#moffat critical#eleventh doctor#meta#sexism#river song#amy pond#rory williams#rtd critical#at least a bit#i thought rewatching might improve things from where I quit as a teenager#and a few episodes yes#but on the whole nope
