Last evening we had a big windstorm that knocked over plants and broke one of my pots 😢 but later the storm beings threw handfuls (handsful?) of jewels over the garden as if to say sorry.

Stumbled across your blog and hope this isn’t a strange question to ask, but you seem knowledgeable on plants. I saw these strange markings (phenotype?) on some periwinkle a while back. Do you have any insight or recommendations to research more? I can’t seem to find anything about it online!

I shared this with my advisor, by the way, because I'd never seen such a thing in Vinca specifically. Because this occurs in multiple flowers, we'd guess that this is a random mutation. This doesn't seem to be a common color modification in Vinca!
(One thing to note is that Vinca minor and Vinca major can be pretty nasty invasive weeds. If you've found this outside its native range, maybe yank it, or, if you love the color, take it home!)

The reference image for this painting was taken at a local park in the summer.

Blooms of October 1st
It’s October 1st and “only” 80°F, so summer should be coming to an end soon. The season’s blooms are mostly gone, but I thought I would have a look around the yard to see what was still blooming; this is one of just about everything—and some bonus fauna.

Gardenia, black-eyed Susans, Chinese forget-me-not, phlox, crape myrtle, vervain, marigold, zinnias, beefsteak plant, camphorweed (yellow) and late boneset (white), vinca, spider flower (cleome) with bonus gulf fritillary butterfly, brown-eyed Susans, “volunteer” yellow cherry tomato plant.
And bonus full-sized (red-shouldered, probably) hawk, ~20 feet in the air in a pecan tree, from ~50 ft away through the screen of my bathroom window, max digital zoom. Terrible photo, fun visitor! (This hawk is 3x to 4x the size of the hawk I posted yesterday!)

That little pink vinca planted itself somehow in the perfect spot.

Plant of the Day
Sunday 2 April 2023
The low growing evergreen Vinca difformis (intermediate periwinkle) by early spring is covered in white flowers. This is a vigorous plant and is ideal as groundcover for a shaded area or on a woodland garden.
