Quote
The Vila (southern Slavic spirit) is usually perceived as female, dressed in white with long flowing fair hair, they are believed to dwell in meadows, streams, woods, hollow mountains and clouds. Known for their beautiful singing and music any who hears them can lose awareness of the passage of time and be gone for days. They lure young men away to dance with them and after their dances leave downtrodden fairy rings in the grass and are known to braid horse's manes into plaits. The Vila can shape-shift into forms including falcons, swans and snakes.        One may only gain control of them by stealing feathers from their wings. One story tells that every Friday a Vila came from the heavens in order to teach women how to heal. These women had to go with unbraided hair to a grove, and there two of them would climb a tree and while they were listening to the faerie they had to eat yarn in order to better remember what the faerie was teaching them; when they had learned, they became Vilenicas. The two women in the tree and everyone else who was listening beneath were connected by a thread that they held in their hands, and as long as the fairy was speaking, they would have to spin together.        Vila ride on horses or deer and fire “elf darts” from their bows. They are appeased by people with offerings left at the roots of trees. The Vila's power resides in her hair so if she loses some she will die, or if you succeed in plucking some out you will have power to make her reveal her true form. There are also said to be “cloud vile,” “water vile”(swans) and “forest vile”(wolves and deer). Mentions of Jesus and Mary send them fleeing. The word “vile” is associated with beauty and used to describe both beautiful young women and beautiful young men. They are able to imbue a hero with strength by allowing him to suckle from their breast. Although most of their actions are benevolent they are capable of desiring bloody sacrifices in return for access to their sacred springs and lakes.

Hi! How would one go about unlearning new age style witchcraft in favor of traditional? Id like to be a trad craft witch but every now and again i find myself slipping into new age style thinking. Thank you!
Hi! First of all, there is nothing bad in being a new age witch. Trad Craft is a different kind of Witchcraft, but there isn’t a ranking: no Witchcraft is better than the other. Everybody has their own path, their isn’t one better than the other. Simply each path is different from the other, but no path is the best for everybody. Every person has different needs, so each path is the best for that specific person. If you find that this is the path that you want to walk, you can find:
- this introduction that I made with all the main articles about Recon TradCraft;
- this post about the Pantheon of Major Spirits within Recon Tradcraft.
Moreover, you can read:- A Deed Without a Name - by Lee Morgan- Witchcraft and the Shamanic Journey: Pagan Folkways from the Burning Times - by Kenneth Johnson- “Ecstasies” and “Night Battles” - by Carlo Ginzburg;- “Cunning Folk and Familiar Spirits” and “The Visions of Isobel Gowdie” - by Emma Wilby- “Between the Living and the Dead” and “Fairies and Witches at the Boundary of South-Eastern and Central Europe“ - by Eva Pocs- Shaman of Oberstdorf: Chonrad Stoeckhlin and the Phantoms of the Night - by Wolfgang Behringer- “Phantom Armies of the Night: The Wild Hunt and the Ghostly Processions of the Undead” and “Witches, Werewolves, and Fairies: Shapeshifters and Astral Doubles in the Middle Ages“ - by Claude Lecouteux- “Aradia in Sardinia” - by Sabina Magliocco- "Early Modern European Witchcraft: Centres and Peripheries" - by Bengt Ankarloo & Gustav Henningsen- Dreamtime: Concerning the Boundary between Wilderness and Civilization - by Hans-Peter Duerr- The Cult of the Seely Wights in Scotland - by Julian Goodare- A Dictionary of Fairies - by Katharine Briggs- Vilenica and Vilenjak: Bearers of an Extinct Fairy Cult - by Zoran Čiča.
Many of these books are really academic. However, it’s exactly the academic books that give you the knowledge useful for searching inside folklore and trials and discover, in this way, the names and the offerings of traditional spirits worshiped by the witches of the past.
These are two articles that explain how to use the information from these books and use it for reconstructing the regional variation/tradition that you’re interested into:

Learning From Disobedience
In the framework of Dopolavoro flagship of the Rijeka 2020 – European Capital of Culture project, the exhibition Pirate Care: Learning From Disobedience will open on Thursday, October 8 at 8 p.m. at Exportdrvo (Grobnička riva bb, Rijeka), presenting the international network of activists and researchers who oppose the criminalisation of solidarity and work to build common systems of care for people.
The authors of the project are researchers Valeria Graziano, Marcell Mars and Tomislav Medak, with the contribution of Laura Benítez Valero, Emina Bužinkić, Rasmus Fleischer, Maddalena Fragnito, Mary Maggic, Iva Marčetić, Paula Pin (Biotranslab/ Pechblenda), Power Makes Us Sick (PMS), Zoe Romano, Chris Gorodtzki & Morana Miljanović (Sea-Watch), Cassie Thornton, Ivory Tuesday, Ana Vilenica and Women on Waves.
We live in a world where captains get arrested for saving people’s lives on the sea; where a person downloading scientific articles faces 35 years in jail; where people risk charges for bringing contraceptives to those who otherwise couldn’t get them. Folks are getting in trouble for giving food to the poor, medicine to the sick, water to the thirsty, shelter to the homeless. And yet our heroines care and disobey. They are pirates.
An example of pirate care: German NGO Sea-Watch, which conducts “illegal” rescue operations in the Mediterranean (photo Chris Grodotzki / Sea-Watch)
The exhibition Pirate Care is an introduction to the increasingly present forms of activism at the intersection of “care” and “piracy”, which in new and interesting ways are trying to intervene in one of the most important challenges of our time, that is, the “crisis of care”. The exhibition primarily considers the assumption that we live in a time in which care, as a political and collective capacity of societies to attend to the most fundamental needs of humans and their environment, is becoming more difficult or criminalised. Crucially, the practices of pirate care share a willingness to openly disobey laws and legal regimes, whenever these stand in the way of solidarity, and politicise that disobedience to contest the status quo. That disobedience and that politicisation are what defines these practices as pirate care.
An example of pirate care: Swedish network of organizations Planka.nu, which promotes free public transport, whose members pay into a monthly fund from which fines are paid for those caught without a ticket (screenshot from the film Hackitat)
The exhibition builds on the Pirate Care Syllabus. The Syllabus is an expanding work-in-progress created with activists and artists engaged in pirate care with the aim of activating collective learning from their practices. The syllabus lives on an online publishing platform developed in house by Marcell Mars, Sandpoints, allowing collaborative writing, remixing and maintaining of a catalogue of learning resources. The first version of the Syllabus was created in November 2019 during a writing retreat organised by Drugo More (HR) within Rijeka 2020 and launched on March 8th for the opening of the exhibition “…of bread, wine, cars, security and peace” at Kunsthalle Wien (AT).
With the Covid-19 outbreak in Europe in March, Pirate Care was one of the few activities supported by Rijeka 2020 that didn’t come to a halt. The work on the Syllabus transformed into a collective note-taking effort to document a wave of organising of mutual aid, solidarity and care in response to the pandemic, titled “Flatten the Curve, Grow the Care”. An expanded Pirate Care network of contributors collected and created notes, instructions and how-tos coming from grassroots initiatives in Croatia, Italy, the UK and beyond. That timely work has found resonance in scholarly and public media, with interviews, references and features in venues such as Artforum, Wired, Art Monthly, The Care Manifesto, MoneyLab #8, Venice Climate Camp, Institute of Networks Cultures and many others.
Presenting a selection of topics and examples from the Pirate Care Syllabus, the exhibition is an invitation to learn from the disobedient practices: resisting criminalisation of migration and solidarity, helping women where abortion is not available, commoning care-work where childcare is scarce, countering housing and debt crisis, supporting psycho-social health in vulnerable communities, politicising feminist health through bio and technical hacking and politicising digital piracy.
Book scanners built by Memory of the World project, “a network of interconnected shadow libraries” which stands for the free access to books for every member of society (photo Ivan Kuharić)
The Pirate Care project was initiated at Coventry University’s Centre for Postdigital Cultures and developed with the support of Rijeka 2020 – European Capital of Culture and Kunsthalle Wien. Produced by Drugo More.

Jajce Pliva Waterfall Bosnia-Herzegovina
Wednesday was another warm, beautiful day in Sarajevo. We’re experiencing a run of “false spring” weather – perfect for a tour of Travnik and Jajce in Central Bosnia. These towns have significant history and monuments.
Tumblr media
Vlasic Mountain – AhlanBosna
Again, the group was small – me, Kathryn from Frankfurt, and Samir our Meet Bosnia. guide. The tour lasted from 8 am to 5 pm. As a native Bosnian and former history professor, Samir was a phenomenal guide!
Tumblr media
Travnik from Medieval Fortress
Kathryn was traveling with the German team for Sarajevo’s 2019 European Youth Olympics Festival (EYOF) held February 9 – 16. The EYOF is the largest sport festival for young athletes between 14 and 18. It’s organized by the European Olympic Committee and occurs every two years in Sarajevo. She stayed on after the competition to explore Sarajevo and the surrounding areas.

Fortress Stari Grad Travnik – visitmycountry.net
Lašva River Valley, Travnik, Ethnic Cleansing
Travnik is part of the Lašva River Valley surrounded by Vlasic Mountain to the north and Vilenica Mountain in the south. These mountains have great hiking trails. As we headed west through a valley shrouded in fog, Samir adjusted the route improving visibility.
Tumblr media
Travnik Tree
For years Travnik was known as Vizier City and the “capital of Bosnian eyalet”. In the Ottoman Empire the Grand Vizier was the Sultan’s prime minister.
Tumblr media
Vilenica Mountain – SummitPost
Ethnic Cleansing
Lašva Valley is the area where horrible ethnic cleansing crimes occurred during the Bosnian War. Although Samir was a child then, he told us about the torture and imprisonment of his father and grandfather who witnessed the horrific murder of most people in their village. They both survived.
Tumblr media
Samir and Kathryn Travnik Medieval Fortress
On a lighter note, Travnik is one of the best preserved cities from Ottoman times. It has protected cultural and historical buildings and is the birth place of Yugoslav novelist, poet, and short story writer Ivo Andrić. Andrić won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1961.
Tumblr media
Travnik Sulejmanija Mosque
Along the way we passed mountains, valleys, farms, and traditional Bosnian houses. Many of them were damaged or abandoned.
Tumblr media
Travnik from Medieval Fortress
Plava Voda River
Travnik is known for its small river Plava Voda (blue water). The source runs right through the center of town. We sampled famous Travnik cheese made in the nearby mountains, and on the way back to Sarajevo enjoyed a leisurely lunch at Konoba Plava Voda a cozy riverside restaurant.

Stari Grad Medieval Fortress
Stari Grad Fortress is Travnik’s most significant historical landmark. We climbed to the top of the fortress marveling at views of the valley and villages from the 15th century Ottoman period. Some old historic buildings in the fortress include Sulejmanija Mosque, Our Lady Vrilo, a Jesuit grammar school, and Elči Ibrahim-Pasha Madrassa which is still used today. There are two 18th century clock towers and a sundial.

Jajce
After Travnik we continued to Jajce, the capital of the Kingdom of Bosnia – a medieval “city of stone, light, and water”. The old city is a UNESCO World Heritage site candidate. The fortress, royal castle, and open air museum are on the banks of the Pliva and Vrbas Rivers, a significant hydropower resource.

Jajce Waterfall appears at the point where the “Pliva River tumbles abruptly into the Vrbas”. The mesmerizing waterfall is spectacular and dominates Old Town.

Pliva Lakes – Come Enjoy Bosnia
During the 14th century, a Bosnian duke built catacombs in the fortress as a “last residence” for his family. Josip Broz Tito stayed there during 1943. In 1945, a conference establishing the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia was held in the catacombs. The Commission for the Protection of National Monuments of Bosnia-Herzegovina registered the catacombs as a national monument in 2003.

Pliva Watermills
Pliva Lakes and Watermills are near Jajce waterfall. The lakes are popular for picnicking, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, volleyball, biking, and hiking. During the Middle Ages the watermills created power to produce seeds and flower for bread. In 2009 they were declared National Monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Church of St. Mary or the Sultan Suleyman II Mosque
Another important monument in Jajce is the Church of St. Mary or the Sultan Suleyman II Mosque. It’s considered Jajce’s “symbol of coexistence”. It burned in the mid-19th century, and today only the walls remain.
Tumblr media
Symbol Jajce Coexistence Church of St. Mary or the Sultan Suleyman II Mosque – Sarajevo Times
Throughout history, it was used as both a church and mosque. There are still “visible reminders of different religions within the church”. The Bell Tower of St. Luke is on the northeast side of the church’s remains. It represents the “only surviving medieval tower in the continental Balkans”. In 1892, the church and bell tower were declared cultural heritage icons by the Austro-Hungarian government.

At the end of the day we drove back to Sarajevo reflecting on fulfilling history and nature from Travnik and Jajce. I’m still processing the outing. Of course the longer you stay in a country the more you understand and appreciate its culture. I plan to stay in Sarajevo until early March and still have much to explore.

Behind the Mask online workshop: Pirate Care: Politicising Care, Piracy and Biopolitics
Part of the conference BEHIND THE MASK: Whistleblowing During the Pandemic (18-20 March 2021)
With: Valeria Graziano, Maddalena Fragnito, Ana Vilenica
In this workshop we are starting from the collective work on the Pirate Care Syllabus to present and delve deeper with participants into a variety of disobedient practices of care in light of their political and technological character. We will, specificially, focus on piracy, division of care labour, and civil biodisobedience.
Valeria Graziano - When care needs piracy In this short presentation and collective discussion that will follow, Valeria will focus on the case for disobedience in struggles against imperial property regimes. Reclaiming the idea of piracy when thinking of care foregrounds the need for radical collective action to challenge contemporary global systems of property and power.
Maddalena Fragnito - Care is a battleground Talk of care is currently everywhere. However, carelessness continues to reign. The paradoxes, ambiguities and hierarchies of care, as well as historical conflict between different care models, have become more explicit during the pandemic. On the one hand, capitalist care for profits of financial capital; on the other hand, necessary forms of refusal growing through the redistribution of care provisions and the commoning of care tasks among people. Can a conflictual collective care practice redesign democratic processes and public institutions?
Ana Vilenica will go into the care crises in housing and how the pandemic augmented issues we have been struggling with for decades. Her main focus will be on the politicisation of care in housing and tenants' struggles and the use of illegal/pirate gestures such as anti-eviction direct action, rent strike and militant aid. In connection to this, she will tackle the criminalisation of solidarity on a systemic level that has nested in legislation and getting tougher as an answer to growing housing and tenants movements.
Pirate Care network
Pirate Care is a transnational research project and a network of activists, practitioners and scholars who stand against the criminalization of solidarity & for a common care infrastructure. Convened in 2018 by Valeria Graziano, Marcell Mars and Tomislav Medak, the project wishes to map and connect collective practices that are emerging in response to the neoliberal "crisis of care" — a convergence of processes that include austerity, welfare cuts, rollback of reproductive rights and criminalisation of migration. In response to that denial of care, imposed by the states and the markets, practices we have called pirate care are organising to help migrants survive at sea and on land, provide pregnancy terminations where those are illegal, offer health support where institutions fail, self-organise childcare where public provision does not extend to everyone, liberate knowledge where access is denied. Crucially, they share a willingness to openly disobey laws and executive orders, and politicise that disobedience to contest the institutional status quo.
Our aim is to foster collective learning processes from the situated knowledges of these practices and together with the practitioners of pirate care we have been working on a collaboratively-written Pirate Care Syllabus and in the early period of the pandemic on a set of notes documenting organising of care titled "Flatten the Curve, Grow the Care".
Workshop leaders
Valeria Graziano is a critical theorist and educator, currently based at the Centre for Postdigital Cultures, Coventry University. Her latest publication is 'Rivoluzioni domestiche contro domesticazioni tecnologiche' (*La natura dell'economia*, Rome: DeriveApprodi, 2020).
Maddalena Fragnito (https://www.maddalenafragnito.com) is a cultural activist exploring the intersections between art, transfeminisms and technologies by focusing on practices of commoning care.
