Viktor Antonov, art designer of Dishonored 1 & 2, has passed.
His designs were fundamental to the world of Dishonored 1 & 2, he brought such a unique flare to the environments he designed that truly made them come alive in such a unique way. I personally was such a fan of his work on this series as one dear to my heart, let alone the series he is even more well known for, Half-Life 2. I cannot express enough how sad I am to hear of his passing. He had such a truly unique vision and style to his work that made him one of the greatest artists of this generation.
Thank you for your amazing work, Viktor, and all the best to his friends and family, please know his work was so deeply appreciated and adored!

Viktor Antonov died. A small and quick study from Half-Life 2 20th anniversary documentary.
Great inspiration not just from his art, but the lectures and podcasts, and it's a pity his work outside HL2 and Dishonored is not easily accessible, sometimes barely documented or credited.

I'm at a loss for words. this is gonna be a bit of a ramble and it might not make sense because I'm pretty fucking sad right now, but I just want to talk and I want to share.
Viktor Antonov, the art director of Half-Life 2 and HL2 Lost coast, and concept artist on many other games such as Counter-Strike: Source, Dishonored 1 & 2, Wolfenstein: the new order, Fallout 4, DOOM (2016), Prey, and many more, has passed away at age 53.
I really don't think i can properly put into words how much this man and his art meant to me. Some of the most important concept art pieces that inspired me to become an artist, shaped the way i design environments, that helped create some of my favourite games of all time, and shaped me as a person and the way i look at the world were created by Viktor. Fuck i even named myself after a character in Half-Life: 2 and this man was probably one of the reasons those characters were created.
I remember when i was about 5 or 6, I was browsing the internet, and came across some pretty fucking amazing art. It was concept art for Half-Life: 2. I was in awe at what i was looking at. the detail of EVERYTHING was just insane. right then i KNEW i wanted to create art like that. I became obsessed with architecture and creating unique and interesting worlds from the mundane. I wanted to have my art out there and i wanted to create like he did.
This is the piece I saw:

This man's art is the REASON I am who I am and am interested in what I am.
the worlds this man created are just unparalleled.

i don't know what to say anymore really. I'm pretty sad and can't really make sense of my words.
All i can say is: Thank you Viktor. Thank you so fucking much. You changed the world for the better and shaped the way games are created forever, and shaped the way I create forever. You will NEVER be forgotten

Что же. Это оказалось правдой и Виктора Антонова больше нет.
Хоть Он в последние годы и ушел в тень, его вклад трудно переоценить, как для «Arkane», так и в целом на медиум.

My go to choice for when I need background ambience is to play both of these in different tabs at the same time. Immaculate vibe honestly. The Overwatch voice meshes really well with the general atmosphere of Dunwall.

'Kingpin: Life of Crime'
[PC] [TAIWAN] [MAGAZINE] [1999]
"Kingpin's urban aesthetic is unique. Part-steampunk, part-art Deco, the world is an anachronism of eras and locales and personalities. To achieve this signature balance, Xatrix didn't have to look far. Viktor Antonov was already stationed inside the bullpen at Xatrix HQ, a 20-something artist who had trained under Syd Mead (Blade Runner and Aliens). "I'm fascinated by urbanism. I've lived in Sofia, Geneva, Los Angeles, Seattle, Austin Texas, I've been all over the place," Viktor notes. "Authorship is questioned in games, but someone has to bring something to the table from their own experience. Think Scorsese: his best movies have al- ways been about his own neighbourhood. Everything I've done has been cities and metropolises. "In Kingpin, we wanted to do a universe," Viktor elaborates, "but we ended up doing one city. You had your downtown area, your poison city, your sewers, your club, your shipyard. It was very much like a genre movie. The inspiration started with downtown LA, and then we added a little bit of steampunk and science fiction. "One of the things that I have found useful in my contribution to the medium is that I'm not a hardcore gamer," Viktor says. "So in Kingpin, I wanted the lighting to be right, the architecture to be right. And the physical space of the cities to be right first and foremost. Then the rendering... if it was too sharp and neat it wouldn't work. I wanted to create a real moody ambience." Kingpin shook off some of its early sci-fi traits when Cypress Hill came calling. The rap group loved the urban environments and signed on to do the score, but it necessitated that Kingpin take place in a world that more resembled our own. The partnership was mutually beneficial, but not necessarily the right artistic choice." ~Edward Love, Retro Gamer Magazine

Some 1bit pixel art for a somewhat faded SF setting. The future is here but your life still plays out in down-at-heel multiplexes, crap greasy spoons, draughty old houses and parked outside privatised care homes. Inspired largely by World of Horror and Viktor Antonov. Possibly to be part of a larger project. Quite enjoyed the restricted colour palette although I'm not yet sold on the merits of dithering (either in the pixel art or in the more usual sense).
