Murder by Starvation: Wicked Wednesdays
News of the Times Episode 169 | 1877 - 1888
In this episode, we plunge deep into the darkest and most harrowing cases from the annals of history where the murder was caused by the purposeful starvation of the victim. We explore the chilling tales of murder by the cruellest means imaginable. Throughout history, there have been cases where individuals met their untimely demise not through weapons or poison, but through a slow, agonizing process of starvation. In this episode, we'll uncover some of the most shocking instances of this macabre method of murder. The simple-minded heiress who was locked away from the rest of the world as her toy boy husband lavished her money and clothes on his 15-year-old mistress. The cruel mother and son team who, after having taken her fortune, locked food away from the all too trusting wife as she slowly starved to death. And the wealthy older husband who was left to slowly die by his younger wife in a filthy bedroom within his prestigious manor.

Victorian Xmas Decorations Part 1
.
Victorian Christmas decorations were made from natural materials. Fastened 2 branches were paper nets filled with sweetmeats, golden apples & nuts. Small red, white, & blue candles where placed on branches. Paper dolls that looked like real people became popular. Tinsel stars hung on branches & tree tops.
.
Many decorations were made from tin foil. Paper cornucopia were hung in branches filled with sweets, fruit, & nuts. Garlands of Popcorn, fruit, nuts or paper chains were a family pastime in the days leading up 2 decorating the tree. Some ornaments were made of wax shaped like angels & children. Cotton wool was used 2 make ornaments & they had embossed paper faces & they were decorated with buttons, powdered glass & gold paper wings. If a tree had candles then paper ornaments were not used. Ladies would guild walnuts in silver & gold foil. Sometimes they would split the walnut in half & add a sweet inside. Tinfoil, Cornish tin & gilded walnuts would catch the light & added a festive sparkle. I made some of these mentioned for examples. For more info see comments & a website with directions to make Victorian ornaments & another that has printable directions at then end of last comment. Dec 30, 2021.

🔵CHAPTER 256: FRANCES 🔵 As every Friday, every holiday and most of the weekends, Frances went to visit her father James at the Bermondsey Workhouse. To do so, she had to cross the river Thames, and she did it walking. - Hi dad, how are ya? - Not bad, Franny, what about ya? - Well... I'm not working at Hora's anymore. - The stoppering the bottles job? - Aye. - So what are ya doin' now, my child? - Oh, looking for som'thin, dad. - At least ya have ya sista, she can help ya. - Aye, she gave me some clothes the other day. - And where are ya livin? - Still with that woman - she lied. She didn't want to tell her dad she was in a doss house. It would be for a short time anyway, as she would find a new job soon, she hoped -. Gotta go dad. See ya next week. - See ya, sweetie, take care. None of both knew this was going to be the last time they saw each other. 🔹🔹 Cómo cada viernes, festivo y muchos fines de semana, Frances fue a vidita a su padre James en el asilo para pobres donde vivía. Para ello, tenía que cruzar el río Tamésis, e iba andando. - Hola papá, qué tal? - No me quejo, Franny, y tú? - Bueno... Me voy papi. Nos vemos la semana que viene. - Hasta la semana que viene, cariño, cuídate. Ninguno de los dos sabía, que aquella iba a ser la última vez que se verían. #victorianplaymo #victorian_playmo #FrancesColes #FrancesColeman #CarrotyNell #JamesColes #BermondseyWorkhouse #onthisday #otd #victorianinspired #victorianera #1891 #history #victorianlondon #basedontrueevents #basedontruefacts #inspiredontruefacts #playmobil #victorianhistory #playmobiltoys #playmobilfigures #playmobilcollector #playmobilvictorian https://www.instagram.com/p/CK8u0nCJlwl/?igshid=m74hvssr11ox

12th May 1828, birth of English Pre-Raphaelite founder, poet and painter Gabriel Dante Rossetti, nephew of John William Polidori, author of the first modern Vampire story, ‘The Vampyre’, published in 1819, and brother to poet Christina Rossetti, and writer and critic William Michael Rossetti. In 1848 Gabriel Dante Rossetti, alongside his brother and artists William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, which attempted to revolutionize English art through a return to medieval aesthetics and symbolism. In 1850, Rossetti met Elizabeth Siddal, who would become over the next decade his muse, model and lover. In 1862 she died possibly by suicide of an overdose of laudanum. Grief stricken Rossetti buried all of his poetry with her at her grave in Highgate cemetery. Later digging them up, he descended into depression and addiction, dying in 1872. In 1894, Rosetti’s sister Christina died, and was also buried at Highgate. Highgate Cemetery was opened in 1839, to replace the medieval practice of burials in small parish churches. With the population of London more than doubling during the late 18th and early 19th century, this had led to a dangerous overcrowding of burials. Stories from prior to the cemeteries opening, talk of mourners witnessing their loved ones graves being dug, whereupon another was discovered, if the grave was within five, the remains were stomped into the ground to provide space for a new burial on top. Older burials were removed and cast aside to allow space, with coffins burned for firewood. This overcrowding had led parish churches to simply pile the dead into their church basements, (continued in the comments) #preraphaelite #preraphelites #rosetti #highgatecemetery #highgatecemetary #gothicvictorian #victoriangothic #victoriangothicstyle #vampirefiction #vampireaesthetic #vampireart #gothicfiction #johnwilliampolidori #thevampyre #horrorfiction #regencygothic #gothichistory #gabrieldanterossetti #victorianhistory #victorian #gothiccemetery #maryshelley #maryshelleyfrankenstein #michaelfaraday #gothictales #19thcenturyhistory #gothicillustration #historicalillustration #highgatevampire #vampirehistory https://www.instagram.com/p/CO0wAikH6nP/?igshid=1c3sb9ut5imth

"𝕿𝖔 𝖉𝖎𝖊 𝖜𝖔𝖚𝖑𝖉 𝖇𝖊 𝖆𝖓 𝖆𝖜𝖋𝖚𝖑𝖑𝖞 𝖇𝖎𝖌 𝖆𝖉𝖛𝖊𝖓𝖙𝖚𝖗𝖊..." J. M. Barrie 🕯🕯🕯🕯🕯🕯🕯 If you don't know the true-life tragedies behind Peter Pan's creation, the eternal youthfulness of the tale's protagonist is an innocent charm... I suggest you dig a little deeper. Rather than blow the candles out on that tale, I'll submerge you less spoilery darkness today. Here is part II to yesterday's post, on the Victorians & their fairies: 🧚‍♀️ Upon Victoria’s death, dark, stuffy, and decidedly gothic drawing rooms were abandoned. King Edward, her successor, swooped in and flung the windows open so wide that all manner of things were let in. Amongst these windswept things was childlike wonder, which manifested in an obsession with whimsy apparent in the art and literature of the time. Fairies were no longer depicted as inhuman. Instead, fairy tales danced around perverse interactions with, and the innate malevolence of, the natural, human world. Stories with grim undertones, and overtones, were written for children: tales of childhood. Haunted with images of death, destruction, a child executed, hanged, swinging from a tree, they once again were undeniably adult. Contrary to popular belief, tales of fairies usually are… 🧚‍♀️ 📸: 1. 'The Fairies of Serpentine' and 2.'They will certianly mischief you, both Arthur Rackham (1906), 3. 'Fairies', Bartolomeo Giuliano (1896), 4. 'Fairies in The Dream', Pierre Puvis de Chavannes (1883). . #gothicmuses #gothicliterature #fairytales #darkliterature #spookynerd #darkaesthetic #victorian #victorianhistory #childrenshorror #arthurrackham #peterpan #jmbarrie #bookish #bookstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/CKXJ4OlgHPN/?igshid=paejvx4p5536

Finished “Wicked Boy” this afternoon! 🤩🤩 : My “niche” in true crime is historical crime because I love learning about the time period through the crime. This book had ALL OF THIS AND MORE‼️ : The crime is fascinating itself but I quickly became absorbed in the story about Robert Coombes (On a side note, I could read a whole book on just Broadmoor alone)and the conclusion had me in tears 😭 : #bookstagram #truecrime #darkacademia #🥀 #WickedBoy #History #writersofinstagram #britishhistory #truecrime #katesummerscale #victorianhistory #Victorian #murderino #📚 https://www.instagram.com/p/CD5O3Q6DnLF/?igshid=xkx8v1w8sfzl

🔵CHAPTER 254: FRANCES 🔵🔞 Frances Coles was born on September 17, 1859 in Bermondsey, Southwark, London to master boot maker James and his Irish common-law wife Mary Ann. By 1891 one of her older sisters, Selina Adelina, was in asylum, and her younger brother James Jr had died. Frances had trained in the packing department of a soap and toiletries manufacturer, and as a forewoman for that job. After, she worked packing powder in a chemist's, but by 1891 she was without a regular job and was forced to prostitution to support herself, adopting the name of Carroty Nell. She was a petite quiet 32 year-old woman, with fair complexion, brown eyes and dark brown hair. 20th May 1845, British Royal Navy officer and explorer Sir John Franklin commanding HMS Erebus and HMS Terror with 134 men aboard, sail from the River Thames in England to navigate and complete the Northwest Passage. The ships are last seen by Europeans three months later in Baffin Bay, whereupon all trace of the men and the ships disappear. From 1853 searches collected artefacts and testimony from local Inuit, to discover what happened to the men and ships. By 1866 it was known that both ships became ice bound and were abandoned. In the 1980’s, remains were discovered on King William's Island, confirming that the crew died from hypothermia, scurvy, starvation, cannibalism, botulism and lead poisoning from the poorly sealed food tins, or the ship's distilled water system. Inuit reports told later searches that the captain of HMS Terror Francis Crozier, and one other member of the expedition were seen between 1852 and 1858. In 2014 the wreck of HMS Erebus was located, alongside HMS Terror in 2016. Barrie 🕯🕯🕯🕯🕯🕯🕯 I've departed a little (okay, a lot) from the Shakespeare I promised. I find myself instead in a world of fairytales. But there is a connection, I promise! To explain, I'm drawing from a small piece I wrote for the wonderful @yogurtculturezine 'Fairies' edition last year🖤. Take a read 👇, have a swipe 👉, and check out Yogurt 🥛. 🧚‍♀️ First appearing in the medieval folklore of Western Europe, fairies - the fae - have a long and rich history. Nowadays, fairies are often thought of as delicate creatures, flowerlike, with papery insect wings. They take inspiration from our own natural world, but exist in a fantasy parallel. We imagine them leaving sparkling trails and inhabiting tales to delight children. This, however, was not always the case… 🧚‍♀️ At the turn of the 20th century, life in Britain had experienced many great advancements in science and industry under the rule of Queen Victoria. Domesticity, tradition, and progress were at the centre of Victoria’s reign and, whilst many profited greatly, preoccupations were all rather grown-up and formal. The fairies of the era came from Shakespeare. They were sometimes beautiful, sometimes devilish, often devious and deceitful. With childlike features they were humanesque yet remained inhuman; like the Victorian image, they too were adult. 🧚‍♀️ Part two tomorrow... 🧚‍♀️ 📸: 1. ‘The Fairies are Exquisite Dancers’ 2.‘Fairies Never Say “We Feel Happy”’ - both by Arthur Rackham in 'Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens' (James Matthew Barrie, 1906), via Wiki Commons. . #fairytales #gothicliterature #gothicmuses #fairies #peterpan #jmbarrie #victorianliterature #victorian #rackham #victorianhistory #zine #bookstagram #darkaesthetic #books #shakespeare #literaryhistory https://www.instagram.com/p/CKUs9lkA8eq/?igshid=b2lx0yl5jtww
