Edith Sitwell
A Unicorn Amongs Lions
Victoria Glendinning
Weidenfeld & Nicholson, London 1981, 393 pages, 20 illustrated pages, 13 x 20 cm, ISBN 0297778013
euro 30,00
email if you want to buy [email protected]
Freed from her unhappy homelife, Edith Sitwell set up home in a shabby London flat: she became one of the best-known 1920s pioneering poets. Victoria Glendinning presents a biography of a woman known for her eccentricity and gothic appearance.
Her looks attracted Cecil Beaton and the principal painters of the day. Among her friends were Aldous Huxley, T.S. Eliot, and Gertrude Stein. She rebuffed Wyndham Lewis and ardently loved the temperamental Russian painter, Pavel Tchelitchew. The 1930s she spent in penury, writing fiction, biography and verse. Only when Yeats hailed her as 'a major poet' did her work reach a wider audience, whereupon Edith Sitwell set off to conquer New York and Hollywood.
Winner of the Duff Cooper Prize and James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Biography, this is the definitive portrait of a spontaneous, gallant, yet tragically insecure woman.
'The excellence of Mrs Glendinning's book is that it remains wise and balanced while never sacrificing critical edge... It's hard to imagine a life of Edith Sitwell that could surpass it.' John Carey, "Sunday Times"

*Time to Orbit: Unknown is hosted online [HERE] and is currently still updating twice a week
Lately I've been actively trying to read more older sci-fi, especially written by women. I found CJ Cherryh and Vonda N McIntyre by searching back through Hugo award lists from the 70s and 80s. There's a fantastic vibe to a lot of these books that I don't really find in a lot of more recent sci-fi, though I'd definitely like to find it.
If I ever pin down exactly what it is, I'll probably have more luck.
I finished Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy this month, I had been eking the series out over a few months to savour it. It really is a masterful hard sci-fi series, managing to dig deep into the scientific concepts, but also to carry a huge, gripping, and deeply human story.
The other notable read this month was Carnage, by Mark Dapin, which is a true crime book, doing a deep dive on Jack Karlson (of Succulent Chinese Meal fame). It's a really fascinating take on Australian crime from the 60s-2010s, and is also a really nuanced character portrait of someone who is largely known as a meme.
And that's September!

Saturday 17th June 2023
Some progress made vis-a-vis bears. Our host this morning, foreseeing the possibility of meeting bear sceptics like us had taken the time to prepare some video evidence of wild bears exploring his neighbour's garden. They appeared pretty genuine, so at least we can agree that these animals are not entirely fictitious.
We polished the new apartment back to the pristine condition we found it in being careful to pocket any unused complimentary food items. We had a 2 hour drive ahead of us to reach the Nanaimo ferry back into Vancouver but we just had time to detour via Victoria the capital city of VI. We were glad we found the time to visit this highly agreeable city; sitting eating our sandwiches on the wharf side opposite their parliament building was exceedingly pleasant. As were the sandwiches. The ferry sailed on time and we found ourselves on the way from the island of forests, mountains and lakes to a mainland comprised of forests, mountains and lakes. Sitting unexpectedly at the rear of the ferry checking on where we had been and reading, we were continuously interrupted by a circle of Canadians who had clearly paid extra to make as much noise as possible and chirrup in that extremely irritating way they do. Thank goodness we only had them as companions for 95 minutes! Fortunately we had a return night at the highly opulent Days Inn by Wyndham Hotel at Vancouver Airport to look forward to. Set in a deserted run down neighbourhood on the airport perimeter, the sort of area one expects tumbleweed to drift along the road was our chosen bed for the night. These hotels look so luxurious, fetching and enticing on their websites with happy successful professional smiling people saying you too could stay in a smart establishment like this and be as happy, successful, professional and smiley as me. The breakfast is okay in its own vegetarian sort of way, and the rooms are ideal for stone deaf plane spotters! But first we needed to hand the Audi back to Mr Alamo and become pedestrians again. Before we could bring ourselves to check into Days Inn, we had a Wendy's Burger at the airport. What a lovely day! Still, we have a free bottle of wine that needs dealing with before we can board Brilliance of the Seas tomorrow bound for Alaska. The only fly in the ointment is that it is Chardonnay!!!!! Yuck.

Shock and sadness at assault death of Andrew 'Chewie' Truman
Friends and family of Melbourne man Andrew ‘Chewie’ Truman remember the 44-year-old gay man following his death after an attack last week.
“Vibrant, independent and courageous”
These are just some of the words that family and friends have used to describe Andrew Truman following his death.
“He was a marvellous and fierce supporter of the LGBTQIAP+ community and a proud gay man,” his family said via social media.
“He didn’t hesitate to take the lead on the dance floor or in singing karaoke.”
“May we all have at least an ounce of his flavour.”
Truman died in hospital on the weekend following an assault last Wednesday.
His father Geoff Truman said his son had suffered an “unsurvivable brain injury”.
He was hit over the head while walking on Elizabeth Street from Flinders Street in the Melbourne CBD.
Truman sustained significant head injuries in the attack and died tragically from his injuries.
In their statement, Mr Truman’s family thanked anyone who had stopped where he was treated to help.
This included the police, paramedics and medical staff at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
The police have provided a photo and name of his alleged attacker Todd Menegaldo.

Police search for man of interest
On Saturday night, a Victoria Police spokesperson said officers were searching for a man named Todd Menegaldo.
Known by the nickname “Rooster”, Menegaldo has a black and white crossbreed Staffordshire terrier.
Homicide Squad detectives have conducted a significant search since the attack.
They have so far been unable to locate Mr Menegaldo.
He is described as being approximately 180-185cm tall and of thin build.
He was last seen wearing a zip-up purple jumper, dark jeans and a yellow beanie.
He is known to frequent the CBD area around Elizabeth Street and Flinders Street railway station.
He is also known to frequent Mildura and Bendigo.
Police are urging anyone who sees him not to approach him but to contact triple-0.
“unafraid to be himself in any context”
Truman was a passionate Western Bulldogs supporter and played AFL for the Wyndham All Abilities Football and Cricket Club.
A football-loving man who was “unafraid to be himself in any context”.
“His love for football was huge, when not playing he was always at Werribee VFL games or at Western Bulldogs games,” club president Paul Barrett said in a statement.
Known as “Chewie” at the club, he was a five-time premiership player and life member.
“He never let his disability get in the road of what he wanted to do.”
His former club, Williamstown Seagulls FIDA FC, paid tribute online.
“His enthusiasm for football, and especially the Western Bulldogs, was infectious,” the club said.
“He was always ready for a friendly chat.”
Williamstown Seagulls FIDA FC extended their deepest sympathy via social media to Chewie’s family and friends.
“Chewie was an original FIDA player with the Maribyrnong Bulldogs, and then the Wyndham Tigers, where he was a life member.

Sultan Suleiman and Hurrem Sultan... Rachel Cory
From Magnificent Century, the general plotting that Hurrem is forced into, largely from the behavior of Ibrahim and Suleyman's family...
She always comes out on top on this soap opera version of history.
Always 4 or 5 steps ahead in her thinking.
In fact, the lady in her scheming and plotting could have given Rachel Cory from NBC's Another World a few pointers ...
Outstanding acting on both shows. One a fictional soap opera from Proctor & Gamble and the other Tim's Productions Muhteşem Yüzyıl based on real people from history.
Enclosed is a combined clip. The first has Mac & Rachel at their best fighting, and the second has Hurrem confronting Suleiman about his women and his promise to her.
Great acting from Victoria Wyndham and Douglass Watson as Mac and Rachel. And Halit Ergenc and Meryem Uzerli as Suleiman and Hurrem.
Outstanding.
