It all happened incredibly fast, and yet Lassiter could still see the last ten minutes play out behind his eyelids like detached scenes from a movie.

Shawn had called him at an ungodly hour of the night, rambling like a madman about a psychic vision so strong it had woken him up—Lassiter highly doubted that, just as he did the mere fact of Shawn being a psychic in the first place. He’d given him a location and had nearly begged him to come as fast as possible.

The Riviera Parlour was the kind of high-end restaurant that Lassiter had only ever dreamt of setting foot into. With a waiting list the length of his arm and a menu that averaged his bi-weekly salary, dining there had simply been out of the question. He’d only considered the idea once, a few months after his separation, hoping that Victoria would have seen in this gesture just how devoted he could be, if given another chance.

Shawn, with his green Henley shirt unbuttoned at the neck and pale blue jeans, had seemed out of place in front of the gold ornaments that decorated the facade of the restaurant. What’s more, the torrential rain had soaked him from head to toe, his hair matted to his forehead and clothes sticking to his body like a second skin. He’d looked all the part of a mutt left to sleep in the doghouse, and Lassiter had had half a mind to scold him for taking his bike in such weather. He’d instead held his tongue, had stared expectantly at the other man with a pinched grimace.

The door had been unlocked—Lassiter had glanced at Shawn with a raised eyebrow only for the latter to shrug and squeeze past him into the restaurant. The glow of their flashlights had casted eery shadows on the walls as they’d wandered, Lassiter forcing Shawn to stay behind him even as the faux-psychic had held his fingers to his temples and guided him deeper into the restaurant and into the kitchen.

He’d ‘divined’ that the evidence they’d needed to tie their suspect to the murders was in the walk-in freezer. How he’d come to that conclusion, Lassiter had no idea, and he hadn’t bothered to ask. Cautiously, gun held tightly in his fist, Lassiter had pushed the freezer’s door open and walked in. Shawn had stayed behind to hold the door, peaking curiously with his head tilted sideways, eyes darting across the room with barely concealed interest.

And then, just as Lassiter had been about to complain about the flagrant lack of evidence, Shawn had yelped and stumbled forward, holding the back of his head with one hand as the door had banged shut.

A deafening silence had hovered over the room for two, three full seconds before Lassiter had launched himself at the door. He’d pulled and pushed at the handle, banged his fist on the cold metal and the thick glass of the window, yelled himself raw, to no avail; the door had remained firmly shut, and their suspect had fled, taking with him their only chance of getting out anytime soon.

Leaning against the door with two fingers pinched against the bridge of his nose, Lassiter forced himself to remain calm, even as Shawn’s rambling, which had been going on since Lassiter’s attempts to open the door had failed, went on and on with no sign of stopping.

“Think anyone’ll get mad if I eat some of these frozen raviolis? I didn’t eat before I left and I’m getting a tummy ache, which is seriously messing with my psychic abilities–”

“If you’re not going to help me find a way out of here, kindly shut the hell up,” Lassiter snapped, glaring intently at Shawn as the latter examined the contents of the shelves. There was no mistaking the tremor in his shoulders, previously soaked clothes now frozen solid on his body.

“Don’t worry, I already have a plan,” Shawn assured confidently, though that didn’t mean much when his voice trembled with every word he spoke. “We turn into icicles and, in ten years, they bring us back to life Michael Beck style.”

“Can you be serious for one second? It’s your fault we’re in this mess.” Then, with a frustrated huff, “And who the hell is ‘they’?”

Shawn shrugged with a vague wave of his hand, and Lassiter had to physically stop himself from reaching for his gun.

“Did you tell anyone else about your hunch?”

“You mean my vision.”

“No, I mean your hunch. Answer the goddamn question, Spencer.”

OMG I remembered I have another ask for you: I can’t seem to find The Man from Uncle to watch in the UK, which is a shame bc I want to read your fics about it and also Henry Cavill gets me all 🫠 ever since he wore a henley on Superman. So, here’s my question: tell me a little bit about it? A little backstory on Napollya (iirc from your posts 😂) so that maybe I can just enjoy the fics? Pretty please? x

I would love to give you some backstory! (Also, if any of my TMFU folks are reading this and know where to stream it in the UK, please chime in!)

The good news is that for a lot of my AUs you probably don't need a huge amount of the background to appreciate the dynamic. It's a pretty classic enemies to friends to lovers setup, with the added bonus that (in the movie) they are actually true enemies rather than just people who dislike each other haha. I am going to put the rest of this behind a cut—no major spoilers for the movie, but it's gonna get long lol. So if anyone else also wants a character rundown + some important stuff about their dynamic so they can dive into some of my other fics, here's your primer!

Ok, so character rundown:

Napoleon Solo: aka "Cowboy," aka "The CIA's finest", formerly a top tier art thief who no one could catch, until he finally tripped up and got arrested. The CIA plucked him out of prison to work for them, and his handler still treats him like criminal dirt. Enjoys fancy cooking, classic yet fashionable suits, is utterly charming, a massive flirt, supposed to be the 'womanizer' but consistently shows a refreshing respect for women (especially given the James Bond comparison).

Illya Kuryakin: aka "Peril", aka "The youngest person to join the KGB", a giant (6'5"), inhumanly strong, super hostile and gruff exterior, surprisingly bad liar, polite king to little old ladies, actually softer than a marshmallow on the inside. His father was a Soviet official who got thrown in the gulag when he was a kid for embezzlement, forcing his mother into a kind of prostitution to survive. Probably resulting from that trauma, he suffers from dissociative episodes when he gets extremely upset in which he does things like trashes hotel rooms (his hands shake when he feels one coming on). Manipulated by his handler with threats of being sent to the gulag like his father. Favors turtlenecks and simple outfits, also a fashion snob. Extremely attached to his father's watch, which he wears.

Gaby Teller: aka "Chop Shop Girl", East German auto mechanic who's father was a nuclear scientist pulled out of Germany by the Americans during the war, leaving her behind as a kid. No-nonsense, prefers slacks when dressing herself, sometimes plays mother to our bickering boys. Possible alcohol problems.

Alexander Waverly: British Naval Intelligence, ultimately organizing the operation, a bit of an asshole but in a charming way, keeps together the team at the end as UNCLE (independent spy organization).

Victoria Vinciguerra: The evil mastermind. Napoleon sleeps with her at one point to save the operation, later she drugs him and leaves him to be tortured. Very tall, very fashionable.

Also other minor character you may come across in AUs: Oleg (Illya's KGB handler), Sanders (Napoleon's CIA handler), Alexander Vinciguerra (Victoria's husband), Rudi Teller (Gaby's Nazi uncle).

The main thrust of the movie is that Napoleon and Illya are both sent to East Berlin to try to extract Gaby for their own purposes, only to learn that they will actually be force to work as a team to take down the bad guys. They actively try to kill each other in not just their first but also second meeting. There's a scene where they argue over fashion while buying Gaby a new wardrobe that is *chef's kiss*. Extreme levels of banter and snark in every interaction. BUT, as these things go, they gain a grudging respect for each other. Napoleon saves Illya's life, Illya saves Napoleon's life. They work together as a team exceptionally well. By the end, they are trading extremely fond insults. There are moments of self-sacrificial plays to save a teammate you're not even supposed to like, gift giving, betraying your principles/agency for the other person. There is a canonical will-they-won't they between Illya and Gaby during the movie (one of the reasons another major ship in this fandom is an ot3 between them), but nothing actually happens.

I think that basically sums up their dynamic and gives you the backstory you'd need for the AUs especially. For the post-canon ones it's a little tricker since I'd rather not give away the main twist of the movie, BUT a lot of them are kind of "in the future working as a team already" setup that don't really reference movie events, so you'd honestly probably be fine there too.

Distrust Chapter 31: A New Hope (Epilogue)

A/N: This is the last chapter of Distrust, I'm sad it's the end but at the same time I'm glad so many of you enjoyed this story despite it having blood and gore.

I'm so super sorry for this late update...

Victoria was washing dishes when she heard laughter behind her, she glanced behind to see Charles playing with their two children.

It has been several years since Briar Bloodsworth has been defeated and the deaths of Rupert and Henry.

She chuckled as their eldest son, Rupert Junior or RJ, played with his younger sister, Henley. Charles was watching them and playing with them. After everything that happened to them, they managed to build a good life.

Two years after the defeat of Briar, Victoria, and Charles started dating and eventually got married. Galeforce retired, leaving Charles to take over as the General. Victoria was supposed to be the new general but she turn down the offer, she wanted to retire and raise her two kids. RJ was born a couple of years after they got married, at first, they were going to name him something different but they decided to name him after Rupert to remember him by.

RJ has his mother's hair color and his father's red eyes. He has his father's personality and his mother's determination, he's an energetic fellow just like his father. Three years after RJ was born, Henley was born. Henley was named after Henry, she has her father's hair color and her mother's emerald eyes. She has her mother's personality and her father's go-getter attitude. Overall, Charles and Victoria have a beautiful family.

"What are you guys doing?" Victoria asked as she wiped her hands.

"Playing," RJ and Henley responded in unison while Charles was snorting.

Victoria shook her head as she went back to washing dishes, Charles kept playing with the kids.

Later that night, Victoria was putting the kids into bed while Charles was looking through some old photos from when Rupert and Henry were still alive. Charles held up a photo of him, Victoria, Rupert, Henry, Johnny, Ellie, and Dave. Everyone was smiling in the photo including Rupert who never smiled, Henry was also smiling. The photo was taken when Johnny wanted everyone to hang out in the town, Charles stared at Rupert and Henry smiling.

The photo was taken before the General sent Rupert and Henry to capture Briar. And it was the last time, everyone including Victoria would see Rupert and Henry as themselves instead of them being brainwashed by Briar. Two droplets of tears landed on the photo, he started trembling, and he put a hand on his mouth to stifle his sobs. He knows it's been years since their deaths but it never gets easier remembering them, he still hates himself for being tricked by Rupert and Henry.

If he had noticed something off by them sooner, they would still be alive and they would be free from Briar.

Charles put down the photo as he picked up a brown envelope, Charles took out a file report with a bunch of photos. Charles's sadness quickly turn to rage as he stared at the report, Briar Bloodsworth's smiling face was staring at him like he was taunting him. Charles then stared at the logo at the top of the report, he was looking at a CCC report.

The Center for Chaos Containment or the CCC for short had created Briar Bloodsworth.

Yes, you have read that right. The CCC created Briar Bloodsworth to contain the chaos and he was made to terminate chaos. However, they messed up in creating him and instead of a being who stops chaos, they created chaos incarnate.

When the Government, Toppat Clan, and the Wall found out about this; they were pissed. The Wall especially since they were allies and they weren't informed of Briar. Bill Bullet, the director of the Central Branch didn't inform Dmitri because they wanted to see if the plan worked in creating a being who can contain and terminate chaos. It didn't.

The reason they didn't stop Briar was that he escaped from them and got a new identity. They've gotten the news of Briar's death a little after everything went back to normal.

Charles put away the file as Victoria came downstairs and sat down next to him. Victoria kissed him on the cheek when she noticed he was depressed, Charles smiled and kissed her back. "Thanks, Tori," he said.

"You're welcome, honey," Victoria replied happily.

Charles smiled for a moment then dropped the smile, Victoria saw this as she looked down at the files and photos. She sighed heavily as she shook her head, and she hugged him tight.

"Charles, don't beat yourself over what Briar did," Victoria said firmly, "He's gone and he will never hurt anyone again."

"I know, but he brainwashed Rupert and Henry," Charles responded sadly, "If we had found out sooner, they will be been fixed, and they wouldn't have died."

Charles started sobbing and Victoria kept hugging him. She whispered comforting and soothing words to calm him down. A few minutes later, Charles finally calm down.

"Feel better?" Victoria asked gently.

Charles nodded but Victoria could tell he was lying, "Look, it's all in the past," Victoria said softly, "Briar's gone, Rupert and Henry are not under his control, and no one will get hurt by him anymore."

Charles wiped his eyes as Victoria continued, "Right now let's focus on the present, all we have to do is raise our children to be good, righteous citizens. And if they ask, we will tell them about everyone including Rupert and Henry."

Charles stared at Victoria, eyes still shimmering, and he smiled. "Yeah, you're right. It's still hard after all these years but I'm glad Briar is gone and we are leaving at peace now. Thanks, sweetie."

Victoria smiled as she closed her eyes and kissed him, Charles kissed her back as he put his hand on her cheek.

Rupert and Henry may be gone and Briar is rotting in Hell but everything is at peace.

"You know, I never thought they would end up together," Rupert said as he munched on some popcorn, he was sitting in what looked like a movie theater but it was small.

"Me neither," Henry responded as he also munched on some popcorn, he was sitting next to Rupert. "But they do look cute together."

Rupert nodded, and Henry finished his bag of popcorn. He was about to get up when the movie screen that was displaying turned off, Rupert and Henry glanced behind them to see Briar Bloodsworth holding up the remote control with a bored expression on his face, "Boring," Briar said dully.

Rupert and Henry gave him a death glare.

"Hey, loser, shouldn't you be in Hell?" Rupert asked angrily.

"Shouldn't you guys stop flirting in front of me?" Briar retorted with a smile on his face.

Rupert growled and was about to punch Briar but felt someone touch his arm, Rupert looked down at Henry who was giving him a gentle look. "Don't let him get you riled up," Henry said gently, "He'll get what coming towards him in Hell."

Rupert sighed as he sat back down, he crossed his arms like a child would be told no, and he grumbled. Briar looked at his watch and he stood up. "Well would you look the time," he stretched as he said that, "I must be heading off."

He went to the exit of the theater, and he glanced at Rupert and Henry who were watching him carefully. "Bye hedgehog and diamond boy,"

Briar left the theater with a smile on his face.

Rupert and Henry shook their heads in frustration, "I feel so sorry for the people in Hell, they're the ones that are going to have to deal with him," Henry said.

"Better than us and everyone else on Earth," Rupert responded.

Henry nodded as they both stared at the black screen, then Henry looked at Rupert. Rupert glanced at him back. "What?" he asked.

"Maybe we should also get going?" Henry said tentatively.

"Oh, right,"

Henry stood up and looked at Rupert, "Aren't you coming?"

Rupert blinked at him in confusion, "In a minute, just want to keep sitting for a little bit." he responded.

Henry went over to him and kissed him on the cheek, Rupert's face was now red. "Hey, if you're worried about us or something I can't explain," Henry said, "It will be alright, we will meet again in another life."

Henry smiled at him and began to leave but before he did, he glanced at Rupert. "And you can see your mom again."

Then Henry left the theater without another word.

Rupert stared at his exit as he thought about what Henry just said, he contemplated his choices, and he stood up. He smiled as he headed for the exit of the theater, he doesn't know where he will end up but hopefully, it will be with Henry, Charles, and everyone else including his mom.

There's a new hope in everything.

Canada Ranks Among the Top 10 Countries for Work-Life Balance

A study released by Remote HR, a global Human Resources firm, has found that Canada ranks among the top ten countries globally for work-life (or, as the study calls it, life-work) balance.

Canada placed fifth overall while New Zealand, Ireland, Belgium, and Demark took the top four spots.

The data includes rankings for several factors that influence an employee’s work-life balance. These include statutory annual leave, sick pay percentage, hours worked per week, minimum wage, and an overall happiness index.

Canada achieved an overall score of 72.75 out of a possible 100. It scored high for its relatively short work week (an average of 32 hours for most Canadians), safety, and for being 2SLGBTQ+ friendly.

Germany, Finland, Australia, Norway, and Spain rounded out the top ten. Canada’s closest neighbor, the United States, ranked 55 out of 60 in the Remote rankings with a score of 31.82 due to no annual paid vacation or sick leave, non-universal healthcare, and more hours worked per week.

The data on average working hours in Canada reported by Remote is supported by the most recent Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) work-life balance rankings where Canada again placed fifth overall. OECD said that “just 3% of employees work very long hours in paid work, much less than the OECD average of 10%.”

OECD noted that full-time workers in Canada use 61% of their day (14.6 hours) for personal care. This includes eating and sleeping as well as leisure activities. This is just slightly less than the global average of 15 hours.

Canada is short on vacation time

The Remote report showed that Canada fell short in annual statutory leave and vacation time. The data said that people employed in Canada receive 17 days of annual statutory leave. However, this is not always easy to measure as employment standards in Canada are mandated by provincial governments. For example, in Ontario, Canada’s most populous province, workers in the private sector (meaning those not employed by the federal government or in a federally regulated industry) can spend the first five years in any job with just 10 days (two weeks) of vacation time per year. According to the Ontario Employment Standards Act, minimum vacation entitlement increases to three weeks (15 days) after five years.

Again, this timeline can vary by province. Employees in Saskatchewan are entitled to three weeks of paid vacation after one year of employment, going up to four weeks after ten years. Quebec’s annual vacation entitlement rises from two weeks to three weeks after three years of employment.

This does not account for Canada’s federal statutory holidays such as Christmas Day, Canada Day, Labour Day, Thanksgiving, Good Friday, and Victoria Day. There are also other public holidays but, in many instances and depending on the province, employees are not automatically entitled to take those days off. It often depends on their employer.

Comparatively, in both New Zealand and Ireland, all employees are entitled to four weeks of paid annual vacation after 12 months of continuous employment.

Consistently high rankings

Canada typically ranks high in global lists. For example, in January this year it was voted the world’s safest country for travelers by Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection (BHTP) and a study by Givetastic in late 2023 found that Canada is the world’s top “dream work destination.” Canada also has the world’s seventh strongest passport according to the most recent rankings by residence and citizenship advisory firm Henley and Partners.

These rankings add to Canada's appeal as one of the most sought-after destinations for newcomers. In 2023, it welcomed over 470,000 new permanent residents, and the Immigration Levels Plan for 2024 targets admitting a further 485,000. While Canada’s immigration minister, Marc Miller, has recently indicated that immigration levels in the near future may look different, he also recognized the economic and social benefits of welcoming newcomers sustainably.
