‘Agra’ isn’t for the faint-hearted – and director Kanu Behl won’t have it any other way
Tumblr media
Kanu Behl’s new film Agra is not for the faint-hearted. If Titli, Behl’s debut feature, was an unsettling exploration of a dysfunctional family, Agra fearlessly goes deep down the rabbit hole. Agra was premiered in the Director’s Fortnight section at the Cannes Film Festival (Titli made its debut at the festival too in 2014). The Hindi-language movie, written by Behl and Atika Chohan, is a psychological portrait of a seemingly deranged but scarily normal 24-year-old man. Guru (Mohit Agarwal) is gripped by intense sexual repression. His domestic set-up fuels his frustration. The house has a father who lives with his second wife on the terrace, a mother who is unable to escape her situation, and an ambitious cousin. Guru’s life takes a turn when he meets Priti (Priyanka Bose) at an internet cafe. The cast includes Rahul Roy and Vibha Chibber as Guru’s parents, Sonal Jha as the second wife, and Aanchal Goswami as Guru’s cousin. Produced by Yoodlee Films and O28 Films, Agra confirms the willingness of Behl and his team to embrace the extremities of human nature, however shocking they might be. Guru’s obsession with the fate of his house suggests a twisted version of Bhimsain’s Gharonda, in which the quest to own an apartment in Mumbai drives a wedge between lovers. In Agra, Guru’s fractured mind... Read the full article

Motichoor Chaknachoor Review
Nawazuddin Siddiqui is known for his intense roles and crime-infested films. But it’s a known fact that he has a great comic timing and if given an opportunity, can excel in such roles. After trying his hands in few such films in the past like FREAKY ALI [2016] etc, the versatile actor will now be seen in a similar space with MOTICHOOR CHAKNACHOOR. So does Afdah MOTICHOOR CHAKNACHOOR manage to entertain and give a good time to the audiences? Or does it fail to deliver? Let’s analyse.
Tumblr media
Movie Review: Motichoor Chaknachoor
MOTICHOOR CHAKNACHOOR is a love story of two neighbours. Anita aka Annie (Athiya Shetty) resides in Bhopal and her only aim in life is to marry an NRI and settle abroad. However when she meets prospective grooms, she makes her demand clear and moreover she is bigmouthed. As a result, she gets rejected and in some cases, she rejects when she finds out that the guy is not going to move to foreign shores. Meanwhile, Pushpender Tyagi (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) has just returned from Dubai after a hiatus. He stays with his family in the house next to that of Annie. Pushpender falls for Annie instantly but Annie doesn’t show interest. Just like Annie, even Pushpender wants to get hitched desperately. When an overweight girl agrees to marry him, he gives his nod though he doesn’t have feelings for her.
Pushpender is 36 and he feels that he is way past the age where he can reject any girl. Hence he reluctantly accepts the proposal. Annie meanwhile gives up after rejecting and getting rejected. With no option in hand, her maternal aunt (Karuna Pandey) advises Annie to woo Pushpender. After all, even Pushpender works in Dubai, also a foreign place. Annie hence tries to serenade Pushpender. She tries to first break off his alliance with the overweight girl but her efforts prove futile. Thankfully for Annie, Pushpender’s mother (Vibha Chibber) calls off the alliance when the to-be-bride’s family refuses to pay dowry.
Annie then straightaway tells Pushpender that she wishes to marry him. Pushpender is overjoyed but Annie is a bit reluctant as she can’t pay the kind of dowry that his mother is asking for. Pushpender promises Annie that he won’t ask for a single paisa and both get married on the same day! The families obviously are shocked but they relent eventually. Annie is extremely happy as her dream of marrying an NRI is fulfilled. However, Pushpender has a secret that can prove disastrous for Annie. What happens next forms the rest of the film.
Debamitra Biswal's story is very simple and nothing great but has potential for a fine and entertaining script. The screenplay however is not consistent. There are scenes that are great but those are few and far between. Also, the first half has more interesting scenes than the second half due to which the post-interval portions aren’t that engaging. Bhupendra Singh's dialogues are very funny and clever, and raise laughs.
Debamitra Biswal's direction has promise but falters due to several reasons. On the plus side, the setting looks straight out of life. The director has neatly explained the neighbourhood, the way the houses of Annie and Pushpender are next to each other. Some scenes are very well handled. On the flipside, the interest rises and falls throughout. Also, the second half portions are difficult to digest.
Viewers are forced to accept that it’s Annie who was wrong for marrying Pushpender for the Dubai factor. Even Pushpender has hidden a fact about his employment which was also not acceptable at all. But Pushpender is not made a villain as such. Shockingly, in one crucial scene, he even slaps Annie. If that is not enough, then Annie’s father refuses to take her back in his house. One hopes that towards the end, both will profusely apologize to Annie for their behaviour. Shockingly, that never happens and only Pushpender says sorry, that too by writing a letter. Hence, it becomes difficult to root for such a character
MOTICHOOR CHAKNACHOOR begins on a fair note. The setting and characters are well established. The situations seem comical but don’t really make viewers laugh. But after the initial 30-35 minutes, the film turns into a riot. The scene where Pushpender meets the overweight girl is well executed and written. Same goes for the scene where Pushpender is buying vegetables and gets confronted by Annie. The best part of the first half is when Pushpender beats his brother Hakim with his chappal. The intermission point comes as a bolt from the blue. Post interval, the interest and even the humour quotient dip. The situations become very unconvincing and even regressive to an extent. The climax is supposed to be funny but seems unimaginative.
Talking of performances, Nawazuddin Siddiqui seems a bit off but then gets in the groove. His comic timing as expected is bang on and even in emotional scenes, he is great. Athiya Shetty is a surprise of the film. From her accent to her performance to body language and to her understanding the character, she is spot on! Karuna Pandey gets to play a fine character and is entertaining. Vibha Chibber is decent. Abhishek Rawat (Hakim) is superb as Pushpender’s brother. Navni Parihar (Annie’s mother), Bhumika Dube (Hema), Devansh Kumar (Ikka) and Usha Nagar Dadi are okay.
Music gels well with the film’s narrative. 'Crazy Lagdi' is catchy followed by 'Kaise Banegi Sarkar'. 'Choti Choti Gal' and 'Aaj Jaage Rehna' are soulful but drag the narrative. Abhijeet Vaghani's background score however is terrific and unique.
Suhas Gujarathi's cinematography is very nice. The film has been shot in unconventional locales of Bhopal, that one hasn’t seen in films before. Tariq Umar Khan's production design is realistic. Shadab Malik's costumes are straight out of life. Praveen Kathikuloth's editing is nothing special.
On the whole, MOTICHOOR CHAKNACHOOR boasts of a very entertaining first half but the second half plays spoilsport heavily. At the box office, it will face a tough time due to the lack of buzz.

*Yoodlee Films Moves into Next Gear: finishes four films during COVID- 19* Four films in various stages of completion in the last four months of the pandemic. Sounds like a tall order, but this is exactly what one new-age production house has gone ahead and done. The unexpected onset of a global pandemic notwithstanding, Yoodlee Films has moved into the next gear, by completing four feature films, in the last few months. COVID-19 has pushed the Indian film industry to rethink production logistics, on-set protocol, safety regulations for cast and crew, and challenged conventional distribution, publicity, and release methodologies. In the midst of this, Yoodlee Films has defied all odds and has successfully managed to complete the shooting of two feature films simultaneously, with all directives and measures in place. Alongside they have also wrapped up the post-production work on two other films, which are now being readied for release. Known for films that traverse a wide spectrum of topics and genres, Yoodlee Films immediately sprung into action as soon as the Unlock guidelines for shooting films were announced. Two major feature films – a Hindi romantic comedy involving a stand-up comic duo, called 'Comedy Couple' and Marathi cinema’s first horror-comedy featuring Zombies - 'Zombivali’, started shoot immediately after the lockdown was lifted and completed the same in the next couple of months. Apart from this, two other features - 'Agra' and 'Bahut Hua Samman’ have sped into various stages of post-production and were readied for release, making Yoodlee Films the only production house to continue to be this prolific through the pandemic. Its also to be noted that during the lockdown, Yoodlee released the critically acclaimed 'Axone' and the crowd favorite 'Chaman Bahaar' on Netflix. 'Agra' stars an ensemble cast headed by Rahul Roy who makes a comeback, along with Priyanka Bose, Mohit Agarwal, Ruhani Sharma, Vibha Chibber, Sonal Jha, and Aanchal Goswami. It explores confined spaces and suppressed sexuality in small towns and promises to start a conversation around taboo subjects. Agra stars an ensemble cast headed by Rahul Roy who makes a comeback, along with Priyanka Bose, Mohit Agarwal, Ruhani Sharma, Vibha Chibber, Sonal Jha, and Aanchal Goswami. It explores confined spaces and suppressed sexuality in small towns and promises to start a conversation around taboo subjects. Agra which is being touted as a festival favorite is directed by Kanu Behl, whose 2015 debut Titli won much critical acclaim.
Bahut Hua Samman stars Raghav Junyal, Sanjay Mishra, Nidhi Singh, and Ram Kapoor among others.  The film tweaks the idea of a heist caper and follows two students as they ideate to pull off a fool-proof robbery. Directed by Ashish Shukla and the film is set to launch on Disney+ Hotstar VIP on October 2, 2020. Comedy Couple starring Saqib Salim and Shweta Basu Prasad and directed by Nachiket Samant, is an insightful look into the lives of two stand-up comics in the metro and is being touted as ‘com-rom’. The film will premiere on Zee 5 Premium on the 21st of October. Zombivali, is a unique Marathi horror comedy, featuring zombies for the first time, is directed by Aditya Sarpotdar and stars popular actors Amey Wagh, Lalit Prabhakar, and Vaidehi Parshuram.
Vikram Mehra, MD Saregama India, says: We are passionate about telling interesting stories in Yoodlee Films. We had set out three years back, as a rank outsider, with a thriving desire to create cinema that affects and engages and to bring some order and method into the madness of film-making. Today we have proved ourselves to be the fastest-growing movie studio in the business, ready to take up challenges (such as we faced in the last few months) and create a new work principle, which is both effective and economical. Our success proves that the tenets of good management work even in the film industry if applied with reason and sense.
Zombivali is looking at release next year when theatres will be operational, while Agra will soon be setting out to do the festival rounds all over.

Drive
Drive is a 2019 Indian Hindi-language activity movie composed, altered and coordinated by Tarun Mansukhani and delivered by Hiroo Yash Johar, Karan Johar and Apoorva Mehta under Dharma Productions. Starring Sushant Singh Rajput, Jacqueline Fernandez, Vikramjeet Virk and Sapna Pabbi, the narrative of the film rotates around the manhunt for a scandalous 'Lord' for a burglary of 300 Kilograms of gold.
A covert operator penetrates a road hustling posse who is pursuing the King. The film was planned to discharge on 7 September 2018, yet was pushed to 28 June 2019, eventually to not see a showy discharge. It was legitimately discharged on Netflix on 1 November 2019. This film was Sushant Singh Rajput's last film to discharge before his passing in June 2020 in spite of the fact that not the last film appearance.
Things are desperate to the point that you know from the main shot this is one drive you ought to have maintained a strategic distance from. It starts in the most noticeably terrible manner conceivable – with an in-your-face item position and a cut-value Fast and Furious feel to it. Blondies moving in hot jeans and shirtless men flaunting their six-packs as vehicles vroom around them – you get the image.
Jacqueline Fernandez rules over this center point when she isn't plotting heists. The 'kachra' in her motor is a man gotten King who is out-heisting her, and if great escapade films are anything to by – absent a lot of artfulness. Her most recent arrangement includes a theft in Rashtrapati Bhawan where a deceitful Director of Monetary Restrictions (Vibha Chibber) – since seems like a post-demonetisation assignment, yet I diverge – and her representative Hamid (Pankaj Tripathi) have shrouded their not well gotten gains. Be that as it may, PMO is onto King and has put their best man at work, Irfan (Boman Irani).
All great escapade films are a blend of plot artfulness and suavity. Heist films, as a kind, accompany their improbabilities – you respect the great ones for them, the horrible ones mesh. In all the betraying and triple-intersection, Drive drops many beats. While there are a few snapshots of rush where you really put resources into the film, they are uncommon to the point that you wonder when they come.
Nonetheless, it is in the suavity division that Drive is genuinely inadequate. Sushant – who has some genuinely great exhibitions to his name – has an egotistical, pouty appearance stuck all over all through Drive. Attempt as he would, he just can't clear that off and begin acting. Jacqueline just doesn't have the acting cleaves to take away the Mata Hari job creators have devised for her. Pankaj and Boman attempt however to acknowledge some place in the center that the exertion is simply not justified, despite any potential benefits.
However, at that point, for what reason should they put in all the work when everybody is painting the town. The verses and discourses seem to have been written in English and when they couldn't discover any individual who can talk acceptable Hindi, they dialed for Google Translate. There is a tune called 'Karma Badi Kameeni Hai' whose exacting English interpretation 'Karma is a B**ch' may really ring a bell. At that point Sushant mouths this unnatural 'Mujh Par kisi ka adhikar nahi hai'; why not make him state 'No one claims me' and be finished with it?
The film's CGI is genuine article breaker. The second Drive hurries up and pursues kick in, the film begins appearing as though a terrible computer game. The stakes are low to such an extent that Drive never recoups – remarkably at what should be the most exciting minutes in the film. The way that there are scenes 'motivated' by Fast and Furious doesn't help. While I can't give you more without destroying the occasions, you will know when you see them and afterward mourn the markdown variant.
Drive is a great deal like the name of its reprobate – appallingly dated. You could develop men named King when they were fending off others called Lion (or, to be exact, Loin). The film, with its rotating blondies and road dashing, is making a decent attempt to be the uber-cool hustling heist film yet its spirit is stuck during the 80s. On the off chance that it has a spirit, that is.

'Wish I could show the world what I had made': 'Motichoor Chaknachoor' director disowns Nawazuddin-Athiya's film
Tumblr media
'Wish I could show the world what I had made': 'Motichoor Chaknachoor' director disowns Nawazuddin-Athiya's film - In a long statement, 'Motichoor Chaknachoor' director Debamitra Biswal stated that she regrets the audience couldn't get to witness the original vision of Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Athiya Shetty's film. Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Athiya Shetty starrer Motichoor Chaknachoor released on Friday and it has already tanked at the box office. In the first four days of its release, the rom-com only made Rs 1.40 crore at the domestic market. The film is directed by Debamitra Biswal who now has completely disowned Motichoor Chaknachoor. She shared a long statement on her social media pages and also apologised to viewers for not being able to save the film and how the couldn't watch the original vision. Her statement read as "Now that the film is finally releasing, I would like to tell everyone that this has been the toughest journey in my life ever. But unfortunately not the best one at the end. We all from the actors to the technicians to everyone involved in the film made this film with immense love and hard work. But I guess not all journey is made successful. Everyone who has worked in a film knows very well how important an edit is for a film. Sticking shots together does not make a film. I wish important decision-makers of the film could have understood this. But I will always be grateful to the beautiful souls who helped me complete this film but sadly no one can watch the magic that we created. Thank you, Chandan Arora, for showing me how a great film is made on the edit table. Thank you for editing it beyond beautiful. Sadly the world is not seeing our work. Thank you, Megh for writing the hilarious dialogues and the amazing screenplay with me but sadly the world is not going to see our version of fun. Thank you, Nawaz Ji, Athiya, Vibha Chibber, Navni Parihar, Sanjeeva Vats, Abhishek Rawat, Sapna Sand, Karuna Pandey, Vivek Mishra Ji, Usha Nagar Ji, Rachna Pakai, n little Devansh, for putting the bestest in this film. Sadly no one will get to watch that best. I will only cherish the sounds of people who laughed n enjoyed at the personal screening of my version even without any background music or proper dubbing. Sadly that version is not coming out. Only due to some silly ego fights which have no meaning at all. Thank you, my entire team. Thank you Tariq Bhai, Suhas Gujrati, Sanjay Bansal, Zeeshan, Imran... thank you not only for helping me out in the film but thank you for standing by me throughout. Sorry, I could not save the film. We know what great potential it had. But I guess sometimes things get ruined even after a lot of honesty put in. I still wish I could show the world what I had made. Thank you Sohaib for taking all this pain for the last three years and still standing by me like a rock. Your support is beyond measure. I might have fallen short on luck with this film but definitely beyond grateful to God to bless me you as my husband. Sorry, I could not make you proud this time. Lastly very important notice to all near and dear ones: It’s OK if you still want to watch the film but go at your own risk. I will not be responsible for your bheja fry. An experience definitely as sweet as Motichoor, but an outcome is total Chaknachoor."
