A Good Day
There was some good news on Thursday, but not all of it was blasted across the country in large headlines or celebrated with glasses of champagne. Some victories are quietly observed.
For instance, while somehow slipping out of the house early in the day, Chica turned up in our yard after a couple of hours. Nancy and I had been quite stunned during her absence, and even Grace exhibited behavior that seemed to reflect a reaction to her buddy’s disappearance. It was a great relief not to have lost a pet so soon after our big move, and Chica certainly appreciated the affection we showed during the remainder of the day.
We also finally got a response from one of the healthcare providers we had checked in with after our move up here. Although our first appointments aren’t until mid-September, it is good to know we’ve made it through the waiting list. In a related matter, my request for a prescription refill came through just in time, thanks to the generosity of the primary care folks in Tucson who were willing to serve us until we actually connect with someone here in Oregon.
Nancy managed to secure an appointment for Grace at a local vet, too. It will come next week, which is better than three-plus months away. But veterinary care is not as complicated as human healthcare, especially where bureaucracies are concerned.
Another response came from the rental management company to our reports of minor problems with the property. There are a couple of outlets that don’t work properly, and the blinds in the living room are missing some bits.
While we have gotten used to our new place, we have found the kitchen to be a wee bit small. The triangle between the sink and the stove and the refrigerator is no more than a couple of feet on each side. But we score a new kitchen trashcan at Costco the other day which helps with order.
Speaking of Costco, we stopped by in the early afternoon to fill up the tank for our excursion to Ashland this coming weekend. We found to our amazement that the lines were nearly non-existent in some aisles, particularly those for self-service. We pulled right up to a pump and only had to spend $3.69 a gallon for gas. As usual, the tank was closer to empty than the gauge indicated.
Finding space for Nancy’s art has also proved more difficult, but we moved a few things around in the study—bookshelf, printer stand and cat equipment—to make room for an easel and another shelf for her various painting supplies. Now her artistic expression can once again blossom.
Finally, my second visit to one of the Thursday night recovery meetings turned out to be a good one. The topic for discussion was Step 2, specifically our relationship to a Higher Power. Everyone approaches this subject differently. Some believe simply in Good Orderly Direction. Others get deeply into spiritual or psychological ideas.
Having grown up a preacher’s kid, I was taught fairly routine ideas for a mainstream, conservative Protestant denomination. But over time I became accustomed to seeing how the religious sausage was made, and my concepts about the universe changed. I no longer attempt to define anything beyond “God is love.”
