Vesper 2022 aka Vesper Chronicles in french. 2/10 abysmal, truly abysmal except for a few plant designs.
I kept getting déjà vu, certain I'd seen this film before. I probably have seen every single dystopia cliché and the decor/colour grading was so familiar. I could have told you it was franco-belgian with a large influence from something eastern though wouldn't have guessed lithiuanian, I was thinking polish or serbian. Obviously it's unrelentingly grimdark.
Spoilers and spoilers for Prospect 2018 at the end. Readmore for long ramblings.
There are two not actually sexual assaults that are filmed as if they were. General worst of humanity instead of people working together type film. By the time we'd drudged through multiple tropes I really dislike, I hated everyone involved in this film except the girl and i hope they don't work again. Hateful film that will crush a bit of your inner spark.
// I get the impression a lot of the reviewers who'd seen this on netflix had not been exposed much to european cinema: it has all the grime and gore of a classic olden times tale with some interesting plants. Please go watch La Cité des Enfants Perdus which has an actual soul at the heart of the green grime. We have dozens of films and tv shows that look like this 'unique' world. //
The world building falls flat as soon as you consider anything concrete: the food must come from harvests but where, clothes must come from animals and looms but where? The plants are carnivorous but how are they alive if there's nothing to feed on. It's just fitting your worldbuilding to look cool for a plot device: lady's plane crashes, she's found being eaten by plants and it looks gnarly. Beyond that? Plot device for plot sake, circular logic.
I could list twenty other similar bad writing moments most of them for pivotal scenes.
The film takes the path of consistent suffering and bleakness until it's implied that the world might be different from now on.
I decided to watch this film blind after seeing it on a list of recent female directed films. I assumed it was american or british. Big mistake!
You can expect about 75% of certain european female writer directors to be 'one of the boys', leaning in to more gross out, ultra violence or sexual content. They are the type to sign polanski support letters and hire actors disgraced in the USA.
It's hard to describe in terms non western continental europeans will understand. It's empowerment feminism meets white feminism but stuck around 1968 not 2006 with sexual attitudes that embrace teens with adults, not sane and consensual bdsm, lots of long debunked Freud.
They make films even better than the boys for sure but it's not remotely feminist in both what is depicted and what is inflicted on the female viewer. You could say at least we get female protags but the 'empowerment' feels more shallow than the music video for The Prodigy's Smack (spoilers for a very nsfw video: it's a lesbianbro asshole not a dudebro asshole)
Some people thought the ending implies the protag goes on to great things and I have no idea where they got that from: no leverage, no lab, no family. She has started the spark that will change the world but she'll have to find a blood broker to see the next harvest. She would have been better off with a guardian than so alone so soon with nothing to sell except blood and her eventual womb.
The few women of colour and lesbians directing or writing tend to have quite different vibes or offset bleak realities with moments of joy. (look carefully for a photo before making assumptions: born in north africa/middle east doesn't mean they aren't white and even whiter in their gaze in films set in brown or black countries)
Gay directors tend to do grimdark or sad sack rich people... just with gay sex. Uh yeah I'm not a fan of most french cinema right now but then again, that's a view shared by quite a few actresses and women who just want 2 hours of escapism.
It reminded me a lot of Prospect 2018, except despite it's deeply bleak story Prospect ends with them both having a new family unit, reason to live and partner who'll watch their back. Vesper has no-one. This was a poorly thought through initial cool concept that decided to throw every gross concept and trope against the wall, add dose after dose of misery then act like there was a happy end.
Please watch Nausicaa of the Valley of the wind for biopunk with heart, careful plotting, a designed biosphere, violence and gross bugs but always for a purpose.

OC-tober Day 4: Redesign
A bit simpler today on account of some technical issues, but Vesper has been in desperate need of a solid redesign for a bit, so this at least works as a first draft.

Lloyd Alexander's 100th Birthday (+Giveaway)
Today is the 100th birthday of one of my favorite (and most influential) authors! Lloyd Alexander (1924-2007) was the author of dozens of delightful books, including the Chronicles of Prydain. (Stay tuned for a Prydain paperback set giveaway!) My Lloyd Alexander collection — and my cat Callette, since Lloyd loved cats and included them in most of his works, so it seemed appropriate! Lloyd…

Hello!! I wanted to ask about Vesper but you got so many idk what's not been asked so, deallers' choice! Pick a question you want to answer off the list or just what's something about Vesper you haven't talked about yet?
17) If your OC has kids, are they a good parent? Do they ever feel guilty if they have to leave them? I have a long answer about this one! So. I don't talk about it too much. But the coterie has a big secret. One that Owen actually doesn't know about yet (So, 3/4 of the coterie do.)
At the beginning of our chronicle, the gang came across a few frenzying shovelheads chasing a little girl. The gang intercepted and killed the shovelheads and then Vesper and Amare searched for the little girl. They found her eventually. She was hiding, scared, and confused. After calming her down and gaining her trust, the girl brought up that her mom was turned into one of the monsters. They eventually took her to a secret haven that Amare owns where one of her ghouls resides. Once they got there, Vesper began to notice something was off about the child. He ended up putting together that she was a lifelike thin-blood! Oh no... Obviously, this is a huge problem. I mean a vampire child is a big no-no. But, of course they have quickly grown attached to her and have been racking their brains trying to figure out what to do with her. They cannot agree on it either. Especially Vesper and Amare. Just another thing for them to fight about.
Amare is very attached to children and wants to take care of her (as she has been denied that opportunity in her life thanks to the ol' embrace.) Vesper is extremely worried that they have too many problems as it is and someone will go out of their way to hurt her to hurt them. There are too many eyes on them. He argues they need to find her a real home with people who can properly care for her. Amare's very normal and mature response is of course, "You want to get rid of our daughter?!" Vesper really likes her. Out of everyone he has bonded with her the most. On occasion he sits with her asks her what she is drawing and checks in to make sure she isn't driving the ghoul that has been watching her insane. (She has been.) Did I mention the little girl can see ghosts and has one that has been keeping her company? She is a little creepy and troublesome... But yeah secret vampire child... Vesper like kind of has a kid.

New Game+ Tutorial
"I don't remember this part of the story." "It's been so long since I played X expansion." "What happened during that raid again?" "Who was this character?" "I story skipped the MSQ/job quests so I don't know what happened and who these people are!"
There's answers to this, friends. Not only is the game's own Unending Journey (in inn rooms, or as furnishing in your FC or private rooms/homes) able to replay many cutscenes, and there's the completed quest log, but there are places online, such as Garland Tools and the FFXIV Game Script, that keep most (not all) of the quest text handy.
But if you want to relive those quests, and/or get the side dialogues and replay (or first time play!) the experiences, as of Shadowbringers 5.1 there's a feature called New Game+ to allow that.
New Game+ (or NG+) will let you replay past questlines, at your current level (which makes it go pretty fast in a lot of cases). There is No experience or rewards to gain through this feature--no using it to level alt jobs. It purely exists to allow experiencing, or re-experiencing, completed content.
Once defeating the Ultima Weapon and Lahabrea at level 50 in ARR's finale of 2.0, you can go to Vesper Bay and find the Wistful Whitebeard.
More info and images below the Keep Reading cut...
(image taken from gamesconsolewiki and their article on this feature.)
Tumblr media
Once you've unlocked the feature by talking to him, you get a new menu option in your Duty menu (the exclamation point icon), right between Duty Recorder and Hall of the Novice.
Tumblr media
Once you select the feature it brings up a menu of options; it usually defaults to Main Story Quests, but I also have a paused replay under "Suspend" in progress. There are also options that match other quest interfaces, like your Journal or the Unending Journey; Chronicles of a New Era for raids and trials, Side Story for quests like Hildibrand, the Scholasticate, Role Master Quests, Void Quests, and Chronicles of Light (story important side quests, like Tales of the Dragonsong War, Tales from the Shadows, Tales of Newfound Adventure). Tank, Healer, DPS, Crafting, and Gathering quests also have their own categories.
Tumblr media
Each Expansion MSQ is broken into parts; usually 2 parts for the x.0 main expansion, and then 2 parts for the patches. They're only available after x.0 or the patch stories are complete.
Also notice the "Help" icon in the top right of the NG+ overlay; it opens a pretty comprehensive guide, divided into menu sections, about how the feature works.
ARR is split into 6 parts, and I do think 2.0 could use a rework in how they're split but for now, I'm selecting Part 6 to look for specific side dialogues that only exist in this timeframe.
Tumblr media
Selecting Part 6 opens the description; the Crystal Braves have just been formed, to help the Scions with the turmoil still facing the realm--from refugees, to Garlemald's continuing threat, to primals and Ascians.
Tumblr media
Once you do, the NG+ quest info shows up, usually around where ever you keep your MSQ quest marker. I hide my MSQ tracker once it's done, so NG+ fits in that same spot in the upper left for me.
Tumblr media
It tells me to "Relive Past Adventures!", which expac and part I'm in, and which quest is my starting point in this case, "Traitor in the Midst", the start of the Ivy spy plotline in Patch 2.4.
From here it progresses as if I am back in that patch and on those quests, but without any experience or rewards. Aeryn's in her current level 90 appearance and skills, making it easy to skip past and handle level 45-50 enemies in these zones.
Tumblr media
So long as I am in NG+, I cannot do current quests, plots, or other content; I can't complete new current level duties (duties new in NG+ itself are fine), I can't access the MB, my retainers, or the Unending Journey. I can manually Suspend my current playthrough, or performing some of these actions (like duties) will automatically suspend my NG+ playthrough. You also cannot start NG+ while doing certain things (like some quests, such as leves).
This also will not let you play through the start of other city-states, only your original starter town. Solo duties will let you choose their difficulty immediately, without having to fail them first like in normal play.
If I want to drop my NG+ save before I've finished the replay--maybe I found the info and screenshots I wanted--I can delete the save.
This is an extremely helpful feature that can be used to replay events and quests, either for the fun of it, or because you want to find specific dialogue or lore information that only exists in a specific point in game. Maybe you want to visit old friends lost along the way, or take new screenshots of your WoL as they are post-fantasia.
Maybe it's just been a few years, and you've found you've forgotten some things and want to remember how the story actually went, especially knowing what you know now.

sweet dreams
fandom: the wayhaven chronicles
rating: mature
pairings: ava du mortain/female detective (vesper graves), nate sewell/female detective (charlie langford)
chapters: 5/?
A/N: I HAVE NO EXCUSE! but here is (finally, FINALLY) chapter 5 of sweet dreams. there's decriptions of death and suicide (in dreams) in this chapter as well as more creepy horror elements, so take care of yourself. 🩷
taglist: @agentnatesewell, @carriehobbs, @lalizah, @kibellah (let me know if you want to be added or removed)
summary:
Vesper sees it now out of the corner of her eye when she’s at the beach again, sitting on the sand and watching the surf and the white foam and her projections of sea gulls and fish. It's sitting on the bulwark, eyes incessantly on her.

I might be biased but I love it when the group malk isn't actually Malkavian, the Amare change is really cool!
I'm going by some ask games you've posted that sound fun because I am bad at phrasing questions but I don't know if you've answered them -
* What's something about your OC that people wouldn't expect just from looking at them?
*What is your OC's weapon of choice? Have they ever actually used it? (And story of the jrpg sword perhaps? Bc I love the art of sword-Amara).
*Does your OC have a faceclaim? If so, who?
*If you met your OC, would the two of you get along?
And this one is just for fun and for Vesper - How many times have the poor guy been blood boiled so far across all chronicles?
No problem, I am totally okay with answering stuff again, some insight might change and I really appreciate it! Malkavians are awesome and are easily one of, if not my favorite clan.
What's something about your OC that people wouldn't expect just from looking at them? Amare has two daughters both 8 years old. She is a family-oriented woman and wants nothing more than a sense of community and to feel wanted.
What is your OC's weapon of choice? Have they ever actually used it? (And story of the jrpg sword perhaps? Bc I love the art of sword-Amare). Amare likes blades of all types. She gets satisfaction from severing things with blades (Idk why I went here but like yea it is canon). She has used her weapons a lot. She was an infiltrator in the Sabbat and liked how quiet and personal it was. She is now training to be a scourge. She started the game with a bowie knife and now has a custom French cavary sword and a claymore. The cavalry sword was a gift from the Giovanni in our game and the claymore was "kept" from the ministry after an event they had. She cannot use the claymore unless she prepares an abyss mysticism ritual as she is much too weak to normally use it.
Does your OC have a faceclaim? If so, who? So she did not originally have a faceclaim. I did see a random picture of a dudes mom from the 80s and was like, oh shit that is exactly what I envision for this character, so I guess some random dudes mom on reddit. (Posted the link to the page but I am never going to use that image since idk who that is.)
If you met your OC, would the two of you get along? Yeah, Amare is really chill tbh and I am too. Even if she got like really hungry I don't think I would be in any danger unless she frenzied. If we actually spoke I think I would be really anxious though since she has no filter and I would probably get flustered by her being so forward.
And this one is just for fun and for Vesper - How many times have the poor guy been blood boiled so far across all chronicles? I spoke to @informaltorching (Vesper's equally as cute player) and he confirmed Vesper has only actively been blood boiled once but when he was a human hunter his hunting partner was blood boiled and he panicked and tried to resuscitate her which resulted in a nasty bit of melting flesh on his palms that are still scarred in his unlife.

OC-tober Day 16: Food
I couldn't for the life of me settle on something to draw for this (and I wasn't really happy with anything I tried), so instead you're getting some written stuff. Specifically, the prompt reminded me of two different story scenarios, so while I'm not going to be overly formal about it, I'm gonna talk about them under the cut.
-----
Out of HayWire's main four, Sage is the team cook (and who I had initially wanted to draw for this prompt). It's something they picked up while traveling, and it just ended up getting more usage after moving in with the rest of the team. Considering none of the others are nearly as competent in the kitchen, everyone appreciates having someone willing to deal with food.
(As for the others: Envy can follow a recipe and knows a few simple ones but can't improvise to save her life, Volt was definitely surviving on microwave meals and the occasional restaurant visit when he lived alone, and Vesper is just used to others doing the cooking.)
Their first morning after moving in with the team (which had been just Envy and Volt up to that point), Sage decides to make breakfast but soon realizes that Volt doesn't have much more than cereal and some granola bars, so Sage picks up some extra stuff (and then more stuff as he gets ideas) and returns to start cooking.
This all happens before the others wake up. Due to worldbuilding-related reasons, Sage just generally doesn't need as much sleep as most others do, so when Envy wakes up and finds out just how long they've been up and around, she's reasonably concerned.
(Envy, however, is also the team glutton, so a well-made breakfast is more than enough to distract her, and Sage not being completely exhausted later in the day helps confirm that it's not a problem.)
-----
The other notable story that has a definite team cook is Neon Lights. Bo acts as the cook aboard the ship the main cast travels on, the Scabbard (despite also being the quartermaster). It's a far more reasonable job when it's just the crew onboard, but a good portion of the story involves others traveling with them, so making sure there's enough for everyone gets a bit difficult.
Everyone tends to eat together on the main deck, so Bo can at least make adjustments to how much he makes based on who always has leftovers and who's never full.
One thing along those lines he notices is that Dezzy (the youngest of the main group, who the Scabbard's crew has essentially adopted) always ends up asking for more, and Apollo (one of the non-crew members traveling with them) always offers her his food. Bo's pretty perceptive, though, and he notices pretty quickly Apollo's doing this mostly to be nice and isn't actually getting a full meal.
Bo doesn't want to bring too much attention to it, since he doesn't want Dezzy to feel guilty about it and doesn't really know if Apollo's aware he's even doing it, so instead he just... makes sure he and Apollo are chatting while he makes meals and gets Apollo to taste test things.
Bo could definitely do it himself, but he plays it off as wanting a second opinion, and after a while it's just understood that Apollo's the kitchen assistant now.
(Bo confronts Apollo about it eventually, it's just tangled up in the other things he's dealing with, so Bo's willing leave it be while Apollo sorts some of the more obvious stuff out.)

Vesper-sama!
*sighs* I missed two updates, a Princess Miya post, and a murder meme? *gasp* nononono... wait, wait, am I canonically half the size of your turtle-sona?
And why Kogane?! *growls* and he calls himself an artist… oh sorry, "master craftsman"… master in being a pain in the… I would have quit before starting, tell me he's the one to eliminate.. please?... pretty please?
agh! priorities, priorities, decisions, so much to have an opinion on *rolling on their webs* and you have collabs now... too much to say...
So, I'll just say congratulations on your third update, I loved the shift between emotional and funny (like they stank)… oh! and the plan you have for the time skip sounds great, so congratulations on the collaborations, and I hope many people help you with the coloring for Valor, Devon… ugh… and Kogane…
Happy holidays, Vesper-sama!
Bunnon, Did you know that annons can't send images?...I learned today
Tumblr media
Bunnon you're gonna kill me... if you were tall, we'd have a REAL BIG PROBLEM on our hands... Ah, although, I suppose you could be tall if you wanted, since you can just extend your limbs? I reaaaaally like size differences... both ways... but the dynamic changes depending on who is taller... how can I tease you from so far beneath you? i guess I'll just have to take the teasing instead (。•́‿•̀。); I don't know how tall Bunnon really is but I was reminded to make a height chart (since I have a hard time staying consistent with heights anyway)
Can't send images ?? oh... that's so sad.. I guess you'll have to use your main account to send images . . . . (or ! make a secondary blog called bunnonymous ! and then you're still anon, but can send images, and I'll still know it's you, hehe)
Happy Holidays! And thank you, Bunnon, I'm glad you like the mood shifts! I wanted to stay in tune with Rise and Chronicles, I think Yojimbo is a little too dark (miyamoto commits genocide against so many anthro warriors PER ISSUE how are there more of them to kill dawg how do they not know to leave my mans alone oh my godd) and yeah I wanted it to be upbeat, a little silly, has some dark themes but shouldn't be overly agonizing, they're kids after all.
I feel the same about Kogane... a real pain in the shell. I'm sure comic artists or artists in general don't usually show the whole text they used to make blabber-mouth characters, but I wanted to show it. I think if you saw everything he said, you'd be even more upset B) and I live for the chaos, you know I have to...
Tumblr media
Yes, he's annoying, I hate that stupid little dog man I can't wait for him to be found in a ditch full of Kraang dogs just munching away at his stupid furry face and that the screaming stops after 6 minutes and 25 seconds........... siiiigh if only... (for legal reasons this is a joke . and no UV's OP is NOT TOXIC)
