Wait wait wait what happened to Veronica Mars?
Have you ever seen a creator of something destroy their own work and annihilate the entire fandom in a single moment?
That's what Rob Thomas did.
Imagine you have a show that's kind of cool and builds up a cult following. And then the show delivers a completely unexpected characterization and pairing that resonates so well that the fandom survives the show's cancellation and thrives on pure hope for a DECADE.
Imagine the fandom's efforts leading to a movie sequel happening, reviving a show after YEARS. Now imagine that movie actually ending up quite good.
And then the fandom gets a few books set after the movie that are also pretty good.
Things are looking up and even a new season of the show gets announced!
And then the revival season airs.
And the characters you loved act completely ooc and the pairing that carried the franchise is written as toxic in contrived ways - the things people loved about the franchise are now missing, nobody acts like themselves and the narrative almost maliciously takes shots at the fandom - and then revival season ends in one of the worst twists ever. A twist that is so dumb that it effectively destroys the pairing AND the fandom.
Then show runner doubles down and gloats about how pairings sometimes don't work out and how this is obvious way forward to make the story more "grown up" and how you can't just write characters as happy - it becomes clear that somehow the person in charge viewed the elements of franchise that made it survive for decades as nothing but baggage, or worse yet - Its weakest link.
The fandom, rightfully, didn't take that too well - the revival season has become synonymous with infuriating and malicious destruction of everything good about the franchise and the core fans of the show never ever forgave the man for what he did.
And with that the show died. Truly died. Not "being axed" died, but emotionally - the very soul of the fandom was ripped apart - out of a misguided effort to prove a point Rob Thomas not only destroyed one of the most hopeful fandoms that carried the torch for the show and pairing for years but also bombed his own career.
There are many cases similar to that where people in charge unwittingly sabotage their own work - Voltron's homophobia, RWBY altering its entire setting into generic pseudo-religious fantasy (after the creator died) due to new showrunner's ego, the tragedy of Killing Eve and few others - but very few blow up in a way Veronica Mars did.
Rob Thomas has become more than a name - he has become a verb used to describe a situation where an author sabotages their own work out of some misguided sense of conviction (or money).
Life is Strange is facing similar situation now - except it's worse because:
It's not even the original authors doing this as the work has been essentially hijacked by people who had nothing to do with what the fandom loved about it.
The nature of the pairing being screwed over also does an immense damage to what the pairing represented to people this time.

rob thomas will write a boy whose childhood sexual trauma canonically manifests itself as sex-repulsion and say ah yes. it makes enough sense for him to be last season’s rapist that we will retcon the entire plotline we wrapped up 23 episodes ago just for the sake of drama. jail for 1000 years mr thomas im not kidding this time

didn't he roofie her?? i have never seen vm but there's an image in my mind (which could be made up completely, i'm very unreliable) that he roofied her
TW PLEASE READ: drugs, spiking, sexual assault.
I assume you mean did Logan give Veronica drugs at Shelley Pomroy's party?
My recollection of the events is as follows:
Luke, Dick and Logan got GHB from their trip to Tijuana.
At the party, Dick spikes Maddison's drink, but she never drank it because she was on a diet, and instead spat in it and gave it to an unwitting Veronica (the 'trip to the dentist'). Neither Maddison nor Veronica were aware that there was GHB in the drink.
Separately, Logan gives Duncan a hit of GHB unwittingly in order for him to 'loosen up'. PLEASE NOTE I DON'T CONDONE THIS, OBVIOUSLY, LOGAN WAS ACTUALLY KIND OF TERRIBLE IN SEASON 1 and also he was like not a great friend to Duncan generally (which is the beauty of his redemption arc in a way - he started off lowkey horrible).
Veronica ends up passing out on a bed.
Dick encourages Beaver to have sex with her, which he says he didn't (although we find out later - in s 2 - that he did).
Duncan eventually finds her awake but kind of woozy, he's also drugged, they have consensual sex (although i note that neither of them were capable of giving consent) but Veronica doesn't remember it the next day. Duncan never mentions it because he believed (at that time) that they were accidental siblings.
This is why Logan says "I'm responsible for what happened to you" because HE'S the one who gave Duncan the drugs. While he's not directly responsible, yes he did a stupid ass thing and you should never ever ever spike someone's drink.
If anyone thinks I'm wrong please correct me!

Remember when Veronica Mars had us all thinking that Duncan had raped his ex girlfriend who happened to be his sister, just to reveal that it wasn’t actually his sister so it wasn’t that bad and Duncan was just a really nice guy even though Veronica was distraught over it being him regardless of if they were siblings or not because he still raped her? Anyway I just finished season one and-

So just putting this out there: just because you don't agree with what the narrative is trying to tell you about a certain piece of media (be it book, movie, TV show, or video game) or what the creator wants you to think about it doesn't make you wrong or a bad person. You are just one person with an opinion.
Let me put this another way. If you are a Game of Thrones fan, do you believe that Bran Stark being an omniscient tree god ruling as an absolute monarch is the best way to solve all political problems? Uh, probably not. If you are a Veronica Mars fan, do you believe the best end to her story is to kill off her long-term love interest because the story doesn't work anymore if she's happy? (Just have her break up with him then!) If you are a Ted Lasso fan, do you think the best ending for the story is for Ted and Rebecca never to consummate their romance and for Roy, Keeley, and Jamie not to become a fabulous OT3? (Okay, opinion may differ on that one, but a lot of people don't like the ending that they got).
Did you think the ending to We Were Liars was a cop out? Do you think Edward Ferrars is an idiot? Do you wish Outlander would get to the point already? Do you think a lot of the plot points in The Last of Us 2 are fucked up? So what if you do?
So if you weren't happy about those things, it doesn't mean you failed at anything. You just didn't accept what the narrative wanted you to believe. Which is fine. They don't rule what happens in your head.
So everybody chill.

I think my most controversial opinion is that killing Logan off at the end of season four was the boldest, most exciting. most surprising writing decision the Veronica Mars writers could have made & the fallout would have made for a good season 5 & I think it was fine, actually, sorry

When you make a movie or limited series to try to reboot a beloved TV show, it should have an ending that leaves the audience feeling good. It should not:
Undo all the progress/growth you leave the characters with at the end of the original show
Brush over questions that clearly should have been dealt with in the interim space but aren’t because the writers haven’t put the time or energy into them
Kill off fan favourites for shock factor
Treat the end of your movie/limited series like a season finale that is expected to continue with cliffhangers
It should be a gift to the fans who stuck it out with you, and who in turn may very well rally around your cause and spark new interest in a reboot. It shouldn’t be a big middle finger to us.

(Misogynistic) male tv writers:
Here is the “nice normal guy” option to contrast the bad boy. “Nice guy” is amazing! So normal and well adjusted! Such even temperament! Wow! The PERFECT boyfriend. Our heroine should pick him but she won’t cuz she’s so broken and bad. Poor nice guy, he did nothing wrong!
The fans and fan fic writers (who are completely correct and valid in this):
Nice guy is literally Ted Bundy in various wigs. He is antichrist. He is evil incarnate. Death to nice guy
