I've been lax about posting the new chapters on tumblr, but since I finished the title graphic I've been figuring out how to tool around with, this seems like a good time to advertise that my revenge gambit fic updates every other week, is currently sitting at 166K and 16 chapters, and has received way more positive feedback than I could have dreamed of.

Satisfaction:

Veronica's been through a lot in the last year: her first love broke up with her in the cruelest way possible, her second chance dumped her to run off with his steroid-dealing ex-girlfriend, her best friend might have a stalker, and her mom - look, her mom is fine.

Things are finally starting to turn around when her new boyfriend betrays her with the last person she'd ever have expected, and that shatters her in a way nothing else ever has. But shattering things leaves sharp edges, and if Old Veronica was virtuous, and virginal, and Lilly's favourite plaything, New Veronica is going to be none of those things - she'll be vicious, vengeful, and willing to take down Lilly Kane by any means necessary.

Enlisting one of Lilly's other discarded toys to help her with that is, surprisingly, proving to be extremely satisfying in more ways than one.

whumptober 2024, day 4: hallucinations

“I’m not sick,” Veronica insists, sneezing as she does. Logan rolls his eyes, places his hands on her shoulders and pushes her gently down onto her bed. 

“Your running nose begs to differ,” he says. “You need sleep. I’m locking you up until you rest.” 

“I am fine!” she argues, but even as she does she notices just how comfortable her bed is. “Okay, maybe a little rest would be good,” she says, settling back into her pillows, “but not because I’m sick.” 

“Yeah, yeah, whatever, thank me after you’ve slept off the fever you’re ignoring.” Logan grins at her and turns off the light. “See you later.” 

“Bye,” she says, a little miserably. Being sick is the worst, but at least it doesn’t take her long to fall asleep. 

When she opens her eyes, it’s past five in the evening and starting to get dark out. Her curtains are drawn, so at first she doesn’t notice that someone is standing in the corner of her room. When she does, she blinks a couple of times in confusion. Her head feels foggier than it did when she fell asleep, her skin hot and her sheets damp from sweat. 

“Logan?” she asks, and her own voice feels far away, throat scratchy. A girlish giggle comes from the corner, and Veronica sits up, dizzy as she does. Definitely not Logan. 

“Who’s there?” she asks quickly. 

“Don’t recognise your own best friend, V?” the stranger asks, and then it hits Veronica: the person in the corner of her room is not a stranger. 

It’s Lily. 

“Lily?” she says aloud, in disbelief. “What - how-,” 

Lily steps into the last crack of evening light from between Veronica’s curtains and sits on the edge of the bed. Veronica doesn’t move, frozen in shock, dizzy from her fever. 

“How are you here?” she whispers to her dead best friend. Lily laughs again, but it’s not a pleasant one. It’s the laugh she would use when she was being cruel. 

“I had to come and tell you something,” Lily whispers. She edges closer to Veronica and places a cold hand on Veronica’s cheek. 

“What is it?” Veronica whispers back. She feels younger again, like they’re at a sleepover. She knows in her bones that whatever Lily is about to tell her is important. Thank you, perhaps, for finding her killer and avenging her death? That she misses her? 

“Sweet, silly Veronica,” Lily says coldly, her hand still on Veronica’s cheek. “How much of a slut do you have to be to sleep with your dead best friend’s boyfriend?” 

Veronica’s heart jumps into her throat and she pulls away from Lily’s hand on her face. She can’t see all of the details of Lily’s face through the darkness, but can picture her face: full of disdain and disgust. 

“What?” she says, her voice cracking. “We - we’re not-,” 

“Don’t try to defend yourself,” Lily hisses, crawling up to Veronica so that she’s straddling her waist, knees either side pinning her down. When Veronica speaks, she chokes on her own words. 

“I’m - I’m so sorry,” she says, tears stinging at the backs of her eyes. 

“You betrayed me,” Lily continues, voice hard. “After everything, you betrayed me.” 

“I’m sorry,” Veronica says again, the tears that have been threatening her eyes finally spilling over. Her head feels like it’s underwater, her mouth like it’s full of cotton. “I d-don’t-,” 

Lily cuts her off by pressing a hand over Veronica’s mouth. She leans forward so that the dark outline of her face is inches from Veronica’s. 

“Your apology,” she says harshly. “Means nothing.” 

A second later she’s gone, and Veronica doesn’t understand why or how, and her head aches - her heart even more. 

“I’m so sorry,” she sobs, voice breaking. “Lily, come back, please! Please, can we talk about this!” 

Lily doesn’t come back.

Okay, so this song was so perfect for them (specifically them during season 2) and I immediately wrote this when you sent the prompt two years ago and sat on it, thinking I would continue it to make it more an actual Logan/Weevil fic rather than just a character study of both with parallelism. But, at this point, I realize I should have just posted it then. Better late than never, right?

Logan takes another swig and leans a little further over the railing of the bridge, the bridge that took his mom. But was that really what took her? He knows better but does he have the courage to answer that question? To face the truth that his father isn’t just the monster of his own nightmares but the one who took the two most important women in his life from him: one with brute force and the other with decades of callous disregard punctuated with just frequent and terrifying enough interludes of pure viciousness to keep her silenced and frozen until the bottom of the bottle was not enough and the only escape she could even imagine chasing was over this edge.

Weevil takes a Taki out of the bag and tosses it over the edge of the bridge.

Here you go, Felix. Seems like every corner store is carrying these motherfuckers you love these days Weevil thinks but does not say out loud. Tatted brown boy talking to himself on the bridge is the beginning of something that ends ugly. Not like things aren’t already ugly, but uglier. Shit. He doesn’t want to know what uglier looks like. Not these days. He’s not V. His curiosity isn’t suicidal. At least not intentionally so. Not on purpose.

He’s not sure where this ritual came from, picking up Felix’s favorite shit and tossing it into the water like his boy is a fucking duck down there. It is not like he believes in that afterlife shit.

The one where veronica went straight to Stanford after the whole Cassidy debacle.  She never quite lost the knack of investigating but with some distance from the Neptune cesspool, she learned to do it without ruining lives; without ruining her own life.
