At the very least, hiking through the godforsaken forest of some nowhere-island had been far less interesting for his crew than hanging around at the quaint little community’s dock; Ganon didn’t have to worry about keeping track of the more impulsive out of his lot, or distract from his goal by arguing with his first mate about the merit of his excursion.  

“Don’t you have enough gods to deal with, already?” He could imagine Nabooru chiding, rolling her eyes as she’d trudge along next to him. 

She didn’t give much of a shit about how the people of Outset Island so casually spoke about fairies and gods, like they were neighbors, or stories nobody alive was supposed to remember. She chalked up the tale of great storms being pushed away from the island’s path to drunken hyperbole and the volatility of the seas.  

Ganon didn’t blame her. If he hadn’t spent his life trained to read past the veneer of outlandish stories and the whimsy of isolated villagers, he’d probably agree with her. 

But, now, he didn’t have time for doubt. He was only egged on by thrumming in his bones, and the burning ache of magic simmering in the muscles of his arm. He didn’t have time to think of anything but following the feeling, stomping down tall grass in his way and hacking through the long and lazy leaves of tropical foliage. 

In theory, the Goddess of Fortune was one of fairies, and resided in a spring of some kind; when the sound of serene, flowing water hit his ears, Ganon felt close enough to his goal to taste it - just a few more steps, cutting through a curtain of thick vines. 

Yes - the water was getting closer! He even heard music; fairies were constantly humming and singing, especially near potent magic! 

Pushing past the last of the branches, Ganon stepped into a clearing. Tucked safe against the looming cliff face, sparkling water reflecting the radiant beams of the evening sun over the verdant forest, surrounded by a symphony of colorful wildflowers, was a spring fed by a small waterfall. 

A spring already occupied by someone. 

Whether the magic within him was reacting to the presence of the person, or the place, Ganon couldn’t tell. Either way, he froze mid-step, blindsided, sucking in a sharp and quiet breath. 

The person was mostly turned away, blessedly, and didn’t seem to immediately notice Ganon’s intrusion. He was hip-deep in the water, fairies buzzing around him, humming. 

The crystalline water of the spring dripped from smooth, freckled, sun-kissed skin and feathery hair that was darkened gold like sweet barley. He was lean like one might expect of a person who spent their life farming in such an out-of-the way place as Outset, but appeared just as strong as he was lithe as his back flexed with the movement of scrubbing at his hair. 

When he turned his head to the side, Ganon got a glimpse of a round nose and soft lips and big, warm, rich, brown eyes. 

He was beautiful. 

(And naked. Not that Ganon hadn’t realized that immediately, but still.) 

Ganon swallowed, much warmer than he had been a moment prior. Heart hammering in his chest, he realized that he hadn’t only sliced through the vines and foliage that had acted like a curtain for the spring, but a woven tunic that had been tossed over a branch. 

The stranger was naked and alone, deep in a forest, away from his village - and Ganon had destroyed some of his clothing, and was watching him bathe from the shadows with a raised machete in his hand. 

It was all he could do, completely mortified at his own catastrophe in the making, to throw himself backwards a few steps and duck behind the nearest, largest tree he could find as if he were running for his life. 

Even if Ganon didn’t dare look from his hiding spot, he heard the shift in the water and the startled noise that signified that the sudden ruckus had alerted the stranger. 

“Who’s there?” The stranger’s voice had a melodic, even sleepy, timbre to it. However, it was overlaid with the kind of strictness a person manufactured - Ganon wondered, vaguely, if he spent a lot of time scolding the gaggle of unhinged children that he’d seen scuttling around the island. 

Mostly, though, Ganon was noting down that answering the stranger was the absolute very last thing he wanted to do. He’d rather die. The way his ears were ringing, warmth pooling in his stomach and adrenaline pounding at his ribcage, he was beside himself with embarrassment and horrifically inconvenient lust. 

Hylia’s tits, he was glad Nabooru hadn’t joined him. She would never let him live this down. She could never know. 

“Oh! Link, Link!” Oh, no. Fairies. One of the damnable things had flitted past the destroyed vines and tunic to hover near Ganon’s face. “Look! Look! I found a dastardly pirate!” The fairy laughed, “Oh, he’s red! Did you come to peep--” Clap! Ganon wouldn’t kill it, he wasn’t that desperate for more bad luck, but he cupped the fairy in his hands to trap it and muffle its alert. 

Fuck it. There was no Goddess of Fortune here, only another island full of false leads and ripe for disaster. Ganon fled. 

Halfway out of the forest Ganon let the fairy go again, but didn’t stop running until he’d made his way back to the edge of the village down the cliffside. Boots skidding in the sand as he stopped, heaving a breath, he realized only a little too late that Nabooru had been waiting for him. More likely she had conveniently wound up near the edge of the village, really - a stray mark on her neck and the giggling young woman balancing a vase on her head as she walked away told Ganon all he needed to know about that - but it hardly mattered. 

“What the fuck happened to you?” Nabooru raised an eyebrow as Ganon straightened up, “Look like you’ve seen a ghost.” “Something like that.” Ganon managed. “Uh-huh. No goddess, then?” Ganon soured, now working to pull himself back to his senses as his nerves finally started to settle. “Shut up.” 

At the very least they wouldn’t leave Outset Island empty-handed. As small as the village was, barely having much to trade or export that didn’t cut into their own people’s pantries, Ganon’s crew was able to refresh their supplies. Further, even if Ganon hadn’t spent much time with the locals, Nabooru had made a couple of acquaintances - their motley party was allowed to stay at the dock overnight, and were even invited to what appeared to be a nightly bonfire on the ample beach. 

After a couple of hours, Ganon had managed to mostly leave the unfortunate forest behind him and refocus on sorting out the ship supplies. Then, it would be just a matter of babysitting his crew away from getting too drunk and rowdy before the villagers retired for the evening. 

The gods were spiteful, though, and it was a small island. 

Despite Ganon recovering from his shock and settling back into the casual pride and charisma expected of a captain, as the sun was setting over the beginnings of the bonfire, he spotted the stranger again. Link, the fairies had called him. 

The blue tunic was tossed over Link’s shoulder as he strolled along the path into the village, likely needing to be mended or added to a scrap pile. Much to Ganon’s dismay, Link was also casually spinning the machete in his hand. 

Link kept his eyes locked to Ganon’s like he could see right into his skull. Perhaps even imagining Ganon’s skull as he did so, with practiced dexterity, he took up a coconut from a passing basket - lightning-fast, he whipped the machete down. Crack!

His point made, apparently, Link handed half the coconut to the young girl that was walking beside him, and finally broke his stare. 

Brain buzzing, Ganon watched him go. Before she could tease him, Ganon snatched Nabooru’s flask out of her hand and took a swig.

Cold as You (I’ve Never Been Anywhere)

Characters: Nora (Female Sole Survivor), Father/Shaun

Word Count: 1224

Summary: When Nora is assigned to take synths from Railroad agents at Bunker Hill, she knows she has to do the right thing. Even if it means facing the consequences of her actions that come in the form of her livid son.

A/N: This one is sort of canonically based? The words aren’t the exact same as the ones in-game, but it’s kind of the basic gist plus a dive into the ✨ angsty emotions ✨

  Bunker Hill. It had gone terribly wrong.

  At least by Institute standards. And maybe by Railroad standards as well. Nora was honestly not sure anymore. She ended up having to kill all of the Institute synths and every Brotherhood operative in sight that could possibly report how she was so openly defending the Railroad.

  She was tired. Exhausted even. It had been a really long day. And to top it all off, on her way to Diamond City to crash at Piper’s place, she was visited by a courser that told her that Shaun wanted to see her.

  So Nora had trudged her way to the C.I.T. ruins, finally arriving very late in the night to meet the man. She knew he was angry with the way that the mission had turned out. The fact that he was outside on the surface spoke volumes in itself.

  Therefore, when he finally addressed the mission, she was fully expecting it. But it did not stop the sick feeling in her stomach and the anger as well as disbelief rising within her as she felt all of the emotion from that day coming upon her at once.

  “I had a choice, and I chose to let them go.”

  “Why? Why would you do a thing like that?” he questioned, and she honestly could not believe just how unsympathetic he was toward these beings that he himself had admitted possessed something akin to free will. He knew that they were alive. He simply did not want to acknowledge it. He would rather that they continue being slaves for his own sick motives.

  “They were afraid. I couldn’t just look those innocent people in the eyes and take them back to a place that they’re so scared of. To people that they are terrified of.”

  “They’re not people!” Shaun cried, sputtering as he gaped at her. She felt her chest tighten with the words. She knew that he disagreed with her on many of her principles, but she had thought… she had hoped that she could convince him otherwise about the synths. Strangely, Curie came to her mind as he had uttered the words, and she shook her head slightly, unable to imagine how Curie and even the synths that she rescued that very day could not be considered as human as anyone else.

  Apparently, her small physical negation of his statement particularly infuriated him, and his face began to grow red as a different side of him altogether began to show itself.

  “They have no emotions!!! They do not feel fear, they do not feel sadness, they do not feel anything! They are machines, Mother!!!” he yelled, for the first time, that façade cracking to show the true monster beneath the shining veneer of humanity. Nora recoiled visibly, furrowing her brow as her jaw tightened as her mind focused on the way that he slung the last word as a sort of slur.

  “They are as human as you and me,” she spoke solemnly, her voice firm despite the intense lack of strength that she felt at that moment.

  “I just can’t believe you would do something so… so stupid,” Shaun hissed, the reptile in him flashing its fangs proudly. She swallowed hard, trying to instill a renewed sense of resolve within herself as she stared him down.

  “I made my choice,” Nora told him, her tone much harsher than that of the one she usually utilized to addressed people.

  “So you did,” he replied. The words were hardened, resigned, and she knew what was coming. She both welcomed it and found herself gripped by an intense and shattering panic.

  “Where does this leave us, then?” she questioned, knowing the answer, but figuring that she would ask anyway. At least it would give her something to reflect upon when remembering and regretting.

  “Well, I suppose since you have proven yourself to be untrustworthy and completely irrational, you have no further use to us. From now on, I simply request that you stay out of our way,” he sternly spoke, and Nora felt her throat tightening a bit as he delivered the words as if she were the true scum of the earth.

  But then, his expression suddenly softened into that deceiving calm that had fooled her for much longer than she was proud to admit.

  “I hope you find the peace you seek.” It was condescending despite how he tried to sugarcoat it with genuineness. It was hurtful despite how he had intended for her to take it as a comfort. It was just another way to twist the knife he had dug into her so ruthlessly.

  Her throat felt raw and her eyes were burning, but she collected every shred of force within her to speak to him.

  “For so long, I dreamed of what you would be like when you grew up. And now that you’re standing right here in front of me… I love you… But I’m just so disappointed in you.” Her entire body was trembling as her voice shook so much that she could barely utter her last sentence. It felt like a poison on her lips, burning her tongue with the pure venom in the statement.

  There was no emotion in his eyes as she spoke to him. Quite simply, this was not hurting Shaun at all. She almost envied the lack of emotion. This was killing her and cutting her to her very bone, and he was just standing there as if she were even less than the lowest scum.

  “Goodbye, Mother,” that icy tone replied, the frost in it somehow chilling her more deeply than even the literal ice that had engulfed her for over two-hundred years. It sliced through what was left of any hope and warmth she may have held in her heart for him. It was the coldest sound she had ever heard, and it would ring through her head until the day she died.

  Nora brought her hand up to her eyes quickly as the telltale bright blue flash of the relay lit up the rooftop of the C.I.T. ruins. She slowly let the appendage drop as she looked over the roof, knowing he was no longer there, but still feeling the need to check.

  She bit her bottom lip, screwing her eyes shut as tightly as she could manage. She felt the lump developing in her throat as the pure weight of everything she had gone through began to fall upon her.

  It was almost as if it were physical as her knees buckled underneath her and she collapsed on the rooftop. She clenched her teeth, the sobs wracking through her as the realization settled upon her that she had absolutely no one left.

  That was her son. The only piece of her own blood left in the world. The only chance she had at a life anywhere near the one she had. The only thing that kept her waking up early every morning to meet the sunrise with a glimmer of hope in her eyes.

  And as the sun rose once again to introduce yet another day and she shed every miserable tear left in her heart, she did not have that glimmer of hope in her eyes. There was absolutely no emotion whatsoever.

  Well, that is, besides the icy hot flame of justice-seeking.

Chapter 1: Jack rips a hole in the Universe. ( part 1)

Date:561 Post Unification.

Location: Raxxis Hyperlane Gate.

While the prospect of using arcano-tech to warp a starcruiser halfway across known space might be exciting to some, Jack found her attention far more consumed with the Corpro-bots trying to kill her.

The starcruiser was slowly jockeying it's position up in the traffic heading towards the Hypergate, and Jack could see ships of all different sizes out the long thin windows, idling in empty vacuum as they waited for their turn to warp to their intended destinations. Raxxis station itself spun endlessly around the superstructure of the Gate - this was somehow vital to the operation of portal technology, beyond just providing artificial gravity- but Jack couldn't remember why; it wasn't important at the moment anyway. She hustled down the aisle past the innumerable sleep pods, rubbing blood away from her stinging neck. The bots had ambushed her and had tried to inject a virus into her implant, fortunately her firewalls were up to date and after a few seconds of flickering vision full of alert messages, she had shut down the invasive program, cut her way free of the black bag they had been stuffing her in and had slipped her captors. 

As she ran she cycled programs in the background of her implant, searching the files for anything that might help her fend off her attackers. Corpro-bot’s might be slow, but they were relentless and built out of the most durable stuff fabricated in the combined universe. She had no illusions who would win in a straight up fight; she was going to have to be clever about this. A glance out the window showed the Gate and the station growing ever closer, The purple glow of the swirling Aether tinting the steel and chrome hallway she found herself in.  She jogged lightly down the aisle, feet making an uneven sound as they impacted the floor. Even years after her reconstruction and physical therapy, she didn't enjoy the vibration and feeling of her prosthetic pressing up into her hip with every other step. She arrived at the end of the aisle, sidled up to the airlock and slammed the open button. The door opened with a hiss to reveal a Corpro-bot, looming over her small frame. ‘Well fuck.’ Looking like a seven foot tall living suit of armor, it’s ceramic plates slid noiselessly over it's inner mechanisms as it turned to face her. As it faced her she could see the small purple flare of light beneath the round solitary lens that dominated most of where the things ‘face’ would be. She could hear the slight whirring and watched as the lens focused on her. The bot’s arms cradled a compact submachine gun.

Jack’s momentary shock turned to indignation as she spotted the gun.

“Well thats fucking bullshit!” Jack said pointing angrily at the weapon, “The Starline made me stow mine!”

“You are being detained for 251 counts of corporate espionage against  the Harmonic’s Agricorp, comply or this unit will be forced to terminate,” came a tinny voice from the bot’s chest. 

“No!”Jack argued, still mentally cycling her program chips, “I’m pissed!  What provision did you invoke to get that piece of hardware on here? That’s some underhanded shit!”

“Your location has been logged with the other units, they are converging now. Will you comply?”

“Will I-? Have you been listening to me at all? I know my rights under the espionage regulations act of P.U. 545, and I’m invoking my right to a level playing field!”

“You- what?” the voice emanating from the Corpro-bots chest seemed to lose a veneer of it's robotic professionalism, “Ma’am, I assure you, Harmonic’s Agricorp is fully within it's right to use deadly force to detain you, even if that involves bringing class D weapons onto a privately held starship.”

Jack scowled, eyebrows drawing together over inky black eyes and she advanced angrily on the robot, the very picture of righteous indignation, “I’ve committed no violent crime! Chemical injections causing unconsciousness or jamming needles i’ll happily contend with, but this? This is beyond the pale! Your brandishing of a firearm is an egregious-”

“Stop!” The gun was leveled towards her chest. At this range the chance of a miss would be nonexistent, “Ma’am your protection against deadly force was nullified when you snuck a class C hidden weapon aboard this vessel. Now will you comply?”

Jack stared at the bot for a long moment, mouth open, “Oh.” “ You all did your research didnt you?” A shit-eating grin split her lips as the mask of surprise slid from her face, “Well that makes this part a bit more awkward.” 

Hand to hand fighting programs spun up in her cyberbrain as she launched herself towards the corpro-bots left side,  spinning and slamming her flat palm against the gun, the alloy of her prosthetic right arm clacking heavily against the plastics of the weapon with superhuman force. The weapon jerked as the bots heavy arm was shifted by the blow and it's finger tightened releasing a loud burp and a short spray of bullets harmlessly into the corridor and one of the sleeping pods. Releasing the gun with one arm the bot swung at her, the mechanical arm denting the bulkhead with an ominous creak as Jack ducked the wild attack. With a swift flip of her mechanical wrist her hand folded back into the confines of her arm and the eight inch Aether-Infused titanium blade sprung forth which she used to carve through the arm holding the gun. A swift slash cut deep into the ceramic armor and severed runic connections inside causing the weapon to fall, clattering to the ground. A tinny curse exploded from the bot’s chest as it attempted to grab her; she spun away, blade sweeping up to carve a sparking trail through the lens of the Corpro-bot’s face. 

“Better luck next time chrome do-ohshit”Her gloating was cut short as the bot’s long arm lashed out and caught her in the chest, slamming her down the hallway to impact a sleeping pod and careen to the floor. ‘So they armored up the faceplate since last time… ow.’

Heavy footsteps made their faltering way toward her as she groaned on her back, feeling pretty sure she had just broken something expensive. ‘Though to be fair,’ she mused,‘most parts of me are, anymore.’ She rolled to her feet and barely got her arms up to block another heavy swing, her arm-blade slicing into the assaulting limb, wrenching free as the bot pulled back. In that split second Jack used her mechanical leg to leap, far more quickly than any organic limb could achieve, and punched the blade deep into the armor of the Corpro-bot’s chest. 

It crashed back onto the floor, pulling her with it and nearly knocking her breath from her. Sparks flew as the tinny voice began to speak and  arcano-tech began to whir to a halt, indicating she had severed something vital. ‘That was close.’

“Destruction of property has been added to your docket, and use of deadly force will be employed by all uni-” the voice cut to static before the whole machine whirred to stop, the violet aetheric glow fading to blackness. 

Jack stood and made her way over to the sleeper pod, which was riddled with bullet holes. Silence from within. She opened the hatch, expecting the gore-splashed worst, but to her welcome surprise found the pod empty. A sigh of relief. That was not something she needed on her conscience. 

As she closed the pod the light swoosh of a door opening down the aisle caused her head to jerk that way, inky eyes scanning frantically. Two, three, four more corprobots filing down towards her, heavy feet clanking on the hard floor. The lead bot raised it's weapon. ‘Time to go!’

Tinny voices called out after her but Jack wasn't listening. She began to backpedal towards the door, casting a sending spell from her neural communicator. A ringing began in her ear as her call connected. “Cmon, Cmon!” She urged, rushing through the portal and into the next cabin of the starliner. A burst of gunfire behind her, bullets whistling by, the sharp crack of a ricochet. Someone screamed to her left but she was too busy sprinting for her life. The ringing persisted. “C’mon! Pick up! Pick up!” the old fashioned ringtone continued to mercilessly mock her. She risked a look over her shoulder. The corpro-bots were running after her, a phalanx of arcano-tech out for her blood. And they were gaining.  

“Oh, not good.” She said, picking a corner at random and bolting down the hallway there.

“What's not good?” came a sleepy voice in her ear, “Do you know what time it is?”

“OCK! Oh thank fuck. I need an exit route, now.”

“Are you sure it can't wait? It's like 4th cycle before sun up.” Oculus said around a yawn.

“I'm being shot at!”

“I’ll take that as a no.” 

“OCK!”

Another yawn, “Ok I'm pulling it up now. Which Starliner did you take?”

Jack ducked down another corridor, “The Solar-Phantom cruiser Dauntless. Booked under the name Maribel Park.”

“Pulling you up. Wait, I’m seeing you stowed a side-arm? You had a gun, and you gave it up? The most accomplished agent of corporate espionage in the Unified systems, knowingly being chased by a crazed farming cult, and you stowed your firearm? For this I lose sleep?”

“I - actually that's fair,” She edged down to the corner and peeked around. Nothing. She slipped across as the tapping of runic keys came through the spell-link. 

“Wait really?”Surprise tinged the rough voice in her ear, the clicking of keys paused.

“No. Fuck off Ock. I didn't have the cash to pay for a fake license on the fly and the guards wouldn't take bribes. The new security bots in star ports have integrity programs installed, what an annoying world we live in. Just find me an exit, please. If I live, I’ll buy you those noodles you like.”

“That sounds more like the girl I know! Ah- ok, so blueprints. Looking though now, It seems you have two real options. Go find your gun-”

“Really Ock?” 

“Let me finish sheesh. Or get to the bridge and get through the Gate before they can black bag you. The warp should play enough havoc with their power sources to give you a shot of getting off that tub. Bots need to shield their arcane cores to remain functional during Gate travel, which means-

“If I can get the ship into warp before they expect it, I can fry them and dust out before they know what hit them! You’re a genius Ock!” 

“That's why they pay me the big bucks, little miss. Just remember that you need to-”

But Jack wasn't listening. She had already hung up and shifted direction, running down the hall full tilt as mechanical feet pounded onto the steel floor after her.

‘Now it gets fun.’
