SSSS Character Smackdown - All in the Family

Tuulikki Hotakainen - seen in flashback of those fateful events on Toivosaari in Y79 - the memory of her squishy endearments is a little embarrassing for Lalli

Veeti Hollola - seen as a normal kid during Y0, enjoying TV and video games, but growing up during the early years of the Rash gave him the experience to become a military strategist. His daughter Taru became one as well.

Cygnus Hollola, of the Hollola mage bloodline. Cousin to Hannu Sarvipöllö. Friend of Saiorse Vangard. Follower of Lyhyt, The Ephemeral. Half cursed but living.

The Hollola bloodline of mages is an odd one given their tendency to explode. After a mass exodus of the family (During which Veeti Hollola, first of the bloodline, invoked the blessing of Lyhyt, the ephemeral.) The Hollolas continued to gain the temporary blessings of Lyhyt. Unfortunately this has become more of a family curse as the magic granted to the Hollolas fades before their 17th birthday. For some it fizzles out but for others, it explodes. As such, the Hollolas are often transorigined. So despite being a Tengu family, a good portion of the Hollola bloodline are other origins.

Hilja, Ensi, and Some Wild Guesswork

The plot, it thickens! I'm stupidly excited by this page, and although I've been speculating way off what actually happened on other matters, here's my pet theory. (Feel free to blow holes in it).

So right now it seems like Hilja's bag is the source of all evil - it pinged Lalli's mage senses, at least, and Ensi (while I'm not sure why she failed to notice it) is taking him seriously enough to investigate, it seems. Good job, Ensi! The lovely Kira (♥♥♥!) suggested that Hilja, with age catching up with her, may have accidentally brought contaminated material of some sort into the town, or something similar:

I don't think that "accidental" is the case so much: They were in quarantine for two weeks. Any contaminated dead material would have been rendered harmless in that time, and I'm guessing the cats would have picked up on anything living, unless Hilja somehow managed to keep it off their radar. We also know from Mauri the polyglot gardener skald guy that there was an outbreak, and it wasn't caused by a troll attack, although he refused to divulge reason or circumstance of it, only saying that defense protocols were updated to prevent a repeat.

So… let's recap. We know that Hilja (whose name means "silence" or "silent", apparently - ominous?) is an aging mage who is just returning from a month-long solo clearing trip, having met with some hunter/mage companions from her town. She is, presumably, to be able to move around as she is, immune - one of the few people in the village, if we can take Tuuri's word for it. She is having a hard time remembering people, it took her a while until she recognized them, and they are blaming it on age catching up with her.

Apart from the fact that we already know/can infer a bunch of key facts about Hilja, much more than, say, possible redshirt Ilmari or unnamed cat guy and that is likely to make her important, what is the prime thing (aside from old age) that makes people forgetful and cause them to fail to recognize familiar people?

Oh, that's right.

(Keep the other marked spots in mind, I'll get to them.)

But, you're saying - she's immune, and they spent two weeks in quarantine! If she turned out non-immune and infected, it'd have shown by then! And… true. But it is also fairly clear that there is a spiritual component to the Rash. The ghosts of the first adventure are one of the clearest depictions of that, I think, and it also seems that they had some degree of ability to attack the mind of an immune mage - thinking of Lalli in his luonto-less state while the ghosts attacked the Cat-tank, and showed up in his Haven, here.

I'm not saying Hilja's case was a ghost attack like the one we saw, since the "cure" was restricted to Denmark in terms of deployment (for all we know), but Finns also have a belief about the spirits of Rash infectees being bad news. Maybe Hilja failed to guide a troll spirit to rest properly and incurred some sort of spiritual "infection" (corruption? possession?)  that - since she's immune - is not going to display any physical symptoms, and that is causing her to bring whatever is in the bag into the town? Or perhaps there is a strain of the Rash there that can have the same effect, infect her luonto or similar? Perhaps she simply overtaxed herself and lost it, rendering herself vulnerable?

Because - well. The chapter cover looks awfully like a hunting party - there's Ensi, and I'm assuming Ilmari (and probably unnamed cat guy). No Hilja. And they are - in spite of being immune - wearing masks. Something is weird and weirdly infectious to other immunes. Are they hunting for her? I think they're hunting for her.

I also think that Ensi's big mistake may have been hinted at in the image above - she apparently likes Hilja enough to wave and holler at her on sight, and looks quite shaken when she hears about Hilja's condition, so what if Ensi's mistake is attempting to rehabilitate Hilja and putting herself and the town into jeopardy, thereby turning into "It"? (Because a certain tendency to go overboard with your powers is a very Hotakainen trait.)

Because, honestly? The Hotakainens have been all about family from the prologue characters onwards, and I'd find it weird if someone who isn't a Hotakainen (or Hollola, which I suppose might be possible for Hilja if she is Veeti's sister who isn't mentioned in the family tree for spoilery reasons?) became the thing that is h(a)unting them, and that is causing Lalli, in particular, so much grief. As little as I want bad things to happen to Ensi, I want her to be "It".

How might that be possible? I think Hilja gets to her, either while hunting or healing her. I'm thinking of the luonto info page in particular, and how much the bottom two panels could be Ensi.

So - Ensi loses her luonto in the process of the upcoming events, which renders her vulnerable to Hilja's infection, and turns -

look at that - her into a Kade - "It", rather than via the more traditional vector of envy eating you up. End of the town and all the ones around it. (Also end of this little essay, I just needed to get this out before I'm going to bed and losing this train of thought.)

Stats time! All in the Family Round 1 results

Tuulikki Hotakainen v Veeti Hollola - 24 to 17 - I mean, we all wanted to squish wee Lalli, did we not?

Árni Reynisson v Ulf & Elvira Västerström - 34 to 3 - Árni has written an acceptance speech, "Dear fans, how are you? I am fine. I just wanted to s"Thankyouverymuch, Árni! *ahem*

Bjarni Árnason v Michael Madsen (Mikkel's twin) - 26 to 19 - like the battle between Leaftroll & Hilja, Michael was declared the winner at the end of the Forum voting, but Bjarni garnered at least 4 more votes after the poll officially closed.  However, the tumblr vote went decidedly Bjarni's way, so now he knows what victory looks like.

Signe Sørensen v Aksel Eide - 33 to 13 - even with 2 'can't decide' votes, the margin was so overwhelmingly for Signe on the Forum.

the Terrible Trio v Michael Madsen (Prologue) - 20 to 19 - this was a dead heat in tumblr and only a snip of 1 vote margin on the Forum.  Thus ends the hope of both Michael Madsens.

Mia Västerström v Kaino Hotakainen - 14 to 25 - at least Kaino will have more of a story here than in canon?

Sigríður Jónsdóttir v Berit Eide - 11 to 30 - whoa, a complete shut-out on the Forum, with stronger support here on tumblr!

Tuuli Hollola v Asbjørn & Solveig Eide - 13 to 22 - Tuuli possibly got a late vote or two, because the Forum said the Generals Eide won, as well as winning handily on tumblr.

Magnus (the cat) v Reynir's fylgja - 10 to 19 - the battle of the cuties, with 3 'can't decide' votes

Guðrun Árnasdóttir v Saku Hotakainen - 10 to 50 - Holy smokes, we love a sad sack Hotakainen!

Sigrun Larsen v Ukko-Pekka - 31 to 17 - another case of the Forum winner at poll closing getting dunked by late voting, but Sigrun Larsen had a 2:1 margin on tumblr, so, yeah, sorry dude whoever you really were.  (Possibly a harbinger of how the polling is going to go once her namesake enters the fray?)

Ensi Hotakainen v Ingrid Pedersen & Gøran Anderson - 45 to 4 - by far the biggest margin!  I admit I set up an easy one there.

Jukka & Juha Hotakainen v Ragnar Árnason - 24 to 14 - the hair was indeed epic, but the twins won this one.

Aino Hotakainen v Frida Eide - 40 to 8 - so far, if the name is Hotakainen, the character is a winner (see, Ukko-Pekka, if you'd hung around & taken the name Hotakainen, you'd'a bin a contender).  We shall see what happens in later rounds!
