St. Theodora of Vasta, the Christian Mulan

A patron saint assigned to my beloved friend @atu433b because her blog is a cozy home for all sorts of critters! <3

"Let my body become a church, my blood a river, and my hair a forest." said Saint Theodora, right before her execution. Today, a church stands in the place of her martyrdom, where a river flows underneath the structure, and seventeen oak trees have taken root on its roof!

Many miracles have been wrought in her church, and it is a wonder how such a small church, with stone walls and a thin roof can support the tonnage of the trees.

She lived in the tenth century in Peloponnese during the time of the Byzantine Empire. In those days, families were required to send one male to fight as a soldier or pay a tax. St. Theodora's family had no male children and they were very poor so her father would have had to be conscripted. Out of her great love for her father and fear for her family without her father's protection, St. Theodora dressed as a man and enlisted herself in the army as "Theodore."

There was a woman who fell in love with St. Theodore, who became known as a valiant soldier, and tried to frame him as the father of her child. Soldiers in those days were held to high standards and so she was commanded to marry the girl or be condemned to death. Theodora did not wish to reveal her secret in fear of bringing punishment upon her father and therefore accepted her fate of execution.

St. Theodora had deep faith in God, and before her execution she prayed, "Let my body become a church, my body a river, and my hair a forest."
