De plus en plus présents en société, les articles de vapotage se retrouvent entre les mains d’étudiants n’ayant pas nécessairement déjà fumé auparavant. Un questionnement s’impose donc : la vapoteuse n’a-t-elle pas été mise en marché afin de devenir une porte de sortie au phénomène du tabagisme ? Et si cette porte était, en fin de compte, bidirectionnelle ? Qu’on lui donnait la possibilité d’ouvrir des deux côtés, afin qu’elle devienne éventuellement une porte d’entrée également ?

Entrevue

Isabelle Giroux, professeure titulaire de l’École de Psychologie de l’Université Laval et directrice de programme de doctorat, s’est prêtée à une entrevue enrichissante afin de permettre une meilleure compréhension du sujet. Madame Giroux occupe le poste de directrice du Centre québécois d’excellence pour la prévention et le traitement du jeu (CQEPTJ), et du Groupe de recherche en intervention et fondements en jeu (GRIF-jeu). En ce qui concerne la source secondaire sélectionnée, il s’agit de l’article « Tabagisme : la cigarette électronique, porte d’entrée ou de sortie ? » de Jean-Yves Nau, publiée dans la Revue Médicale de Suisse.

Lors de l’entrevue, les propos de Mme. Giroux ont permis de mieux définir le concept de dépendance, en plus d’expliquer le fonctionnement du système dopaminergique. En effet, Giroux mentionne que la dépendance se caractérise habituellement par « une maladie incurable qui dure toute la vie, dont les symptômes sont chroniques et se développent progressivement ». Cette dernière stipule également que le système dopaminergique fait quant à lui l’objet de « circuit de la récompense et des punitions qui gère les désirs, le plaisir et les émotions ». Cela étant dit, la définition de ces deux concepts a permis une meilleure compréhension du phénomène de dépendance.

L’article de Jean-Yves Nau, quant à lui, offre un constat plus concret en ce qui a trait au vapotage comme porte de sortie, mais aussi comme porte d’entrée au tabagisme. On peut y lire qu’ «  à ce stade (et sauf retournement de situation), les cigarettes électroniques pourront être considérées soit comme un médicament, soit comme un produit du tabac ». Nau présente tout de même l’autre côté de la médaille en mentionnant que « la cigarette électronique semble ainsi constituer, du moins pour le moment, plutôt une solution de sortie du tabagisme qu’une "porte d’entrée" ». On mentionne également dans l’article qu’un certain pourcentage « des expérimentateurs de la cigarette électronique déclarent n’avoir jamais ou presque fumé de tabac », ce qui soutient l’hypothèse de la porte d’entrée mentionnée plus haut.

Public cible choisi

Bien que le public cible puisse être constitué de plusieurs tranches d’âge, ce sont les 16 à 24 ans qui ont été sélectionnés. Que ce soit en quête de validation, ou encore de nouvelles sensations, c’est environ vers ces âges que la cigarette électronique fait le plus facilement son entrée dans la vie des jeunes en raison d’une tendance plus ou moins temporaire à vapoter. La tranche choisie est plutôt large puisque cette habitude peut commencer autant au niveau secondaire qu’au niveau universitaire.

Impliqué dans le fonctionnement du cerveau et du système nerveux, (…) le système dopaminergique est, (…) selon Vincent Vialou de Médecine Sciences, (…) « un mécanisme qui s’active lors de la présence de stimulus plaisants comme la nourriture, (…) le plaisir sexuel (…) et les interactions sociales ». Celui-ci peut également être activé « par des expériences aversives et stressantes », (…) mentionne-t’il. Sa fonction principale est de sécréter l’hormone du bonheur qu’est la dopamine. En fait, (…) dès qu’un stimulant vient procurer une émotion positive, (…) le système dopaminergique y est probablement pour quelque chose. Il est possible de comparer ce phénomène à des expériences de tous les jours comme, (…) par exemple, (…) l’heure du cinq à sept. En effet, (…) l’heure du cinq à sept est, (…) pour plusieurs, (…) une motivation à préparer le souper. Il s’agit habituellement de la coupe de vin (…) ou encore de l’once d’alcool qui accompagne le cinq à sept en question (…) qui motive la majorité. Cela étant dit, (…) le fonctionnement du système dopaminergique est applicable à la situation du cinq à sept, (…) au sens où l’alcool tient lieu de stimulant, (…) au même titre que ceux mentionnés plus haut.
