Scientists warn: limit on plastic production is the only resort
Scientists around the world warn in a letter that there should be a limit on plastic production. According to the researchers, an upper limit is the only solution to halt the growing threat of plastic waste on the environment and ourselves.
The letter[1], published in the scientific journal Science, comes in response to a United Nations meeting in Nairobi[2], Kenya. In it, world leaders, environment ministers and other organizations from 173 countries agreed to draw up a global treaty against plastic pollution.
According to experts, the agreement was "the most ambitious decision since the Montreal Protocol in 1989 to protect the ozone layer."[3] But according to the researchers and the authors of the letter, more needs to be done: to put a brake on plastic production. âCurrent plastic production is 450 million tons per year. By 2045, this will have doubled,â say the researchers from Germany, Norway, Sweden, the UK, the US, India and Canada.
Stop plastic production by 2040
Improved recycling and collection systems will not be enough to prevent plastic pollution on land and in oceans. âBecause existing plastics and plastics in the environment decompose into micro- and nanoparticles, this form of pollution is unrecoverable and irreversible,â the letter states.
According to the researchers, something needs to be done on the production side. âTo stop plastic pollution, we need to stop newly produced plastics by 2040.â
Co2 emissions
Besides the fact that plastic poses a threat to the environment, biodiversity and humanity[4], its production also involves a lot of greenhouse gases. Plastic is made from oil and that is anything but sustainable.
âEven applying all the political and technological solutions available today, including replacement, improved recycling, waste management and circularity, annual plastic emissions to the environment can only be reduced by 79 percent in 20 years,â the scientists write.
Plastics Agreement Negotiations
Government negotiations on a plastics agreement will start on May 30. If it is up to the researchers, the production of plastic will be reduced in the coming years and eventually stopped.
The world population is also open to a plastic ban. Earlier, an Ipsos poll[5], commissioned by The Plastic Free Foundation[6] and the WWF, showed that three quarters of the world's population is in favour of a ban on single-use plastic. Even in that context, the figures showed the urgency of the demand for a global plastics treaty.

Does âmommy brainâ last? Study shows motherhood does not diminish attention
âMommy brainâ is a long-held perception that mothers are more forgetful and less attentive.
âIn most studies, however, attention and memory tests are given to mothers very early postpartum,â said Valerie Tucker Miller, a Ph.D. student in Purdue Universityâs Department of Anthropology department. Miller is studying the effects of motherhood on attention, memory and other psychological processes.
âThere are few issues with that,â she added. âWhen you first have a child, you have a cascade of hormones and sleep deprivation that might be affecting attention and memory processes in the brain.â
Schematic of the ANT-R. For each cue condition (non, double, valid, and invalid), a cue box is displayed for 100 milliseconds. After the variable duration (zero, 400, or 800 milliseconds), five arrows appear for 500 milliseconds on one side of the display. The participant is asked to press the button that corresponds to the direction of the middle arrow only. (Courtesy photo)
In a new study testing the prevalence of âmommy brain,â Miller used a revised version of the Attention Network Test (ANT), called the ANT-R, to compare reaction times among 60 mothers, all of whom were at least one year postpartum, and 70 non-mothers. The results, published online in the journal Current Psychology, show that mothers performed equally as well or better compared with women who had never been pregnant or had children.
âFor this particular study, we recruited moms who were past that first year postpartum because we wanted to see the long-term effects of maternity,â she said. âOverall, moms did not have significantly different attention than non-mothers, so we did not find evidence to support âmommy brainâ as our culture understands it. Itâs possible, if anything, that maternity is related to improved, rather than diminished, attentiveness.â
Co-author Amanda Veile, an assistant professor of anthropology at Purdue, said the mixed-method study may be the first to investigate the long-term effects of biological motherhood on real-life attention network functioning. Lisa A. VanWormer, a Purdue University alumna and visiting associate professor of psychology at St. Norbert College, also is a co-author.
Valerie Tucker Miller. (Courtesy photo)
Researchers used a seven-point scale to measure participantsâ responses to survey questions such as, âHow sleepy do you feel?â and âHow do you think your attentiveness is?â Womenâs perceived attention functioning was strongly associated with their tested attention scores, regardless of motherhood status, Veile said.
âThis means that women have accurate awareness of their cognitive state, and that their concerns regarding their perceived attentional functioning should be taken seriously,â she said. âWe also believe that âmommy-brainâ may be a culture-bound phenomenon, and that mothers will feel the most distracted and forgetful when they feel stressed, overextended and unsupported. Unfortunately, many U.S. moms feel this way, especially now in the midst of economic and political instability and pandemic.â
During the computer test, a cue box flashes for 100 milliseconds in one of two possible locations where a target image will appear on the screen. Next, an image of five arrows, each pointing left or right in consistent or conflicting directions, flashes on the screen for 500 milliseconds. Participants are then asked to press a button that corresponds to the direction of only the middle arrow.
Miller said the test measures response times and provides scores for the three main networks of attention: The alerting network helps the brain prepare for incoming stimuli; the orienting network directs the brainâs attention to something new; and the executive control network helps resolve conflicting information.

Mothers in the study were, on average, 10 years older than non-mothers. Even after controlling for age, however, the researchers found that mothers had similar alerting and orienting attention, and better executive control attention, compared to non-mothers.
âMoms were not as distracted by those outside, incongruent items,â Miller said. âIt makes perfect sense that moms who have brought children into this world have more stimuli that needs to be processed to keep themselves and other humans alive, and then to continue with all the other tasks that were required before the children.â
Heightened attention isnât always a good thing. It could become amplified with feelings of stress and  isolation, which many U.S. moms experience, causing them to develop anxiety, Veile said.
âWe plan to do cross-cultural investigations to further examine how narratives of motherhood and social support are associated with maternal tested attention and well-being around the world,â she said.
The research was supported by the College of Liberal Arts at Purdue and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Florida.

Did you ever wonder what it might look like to perform in an online play, live on the internet, during a period of physical distancing
On Friday night, I had the pure delight of performing in readings of several brand new, unrevised, unrehearsed short playsâdevised within 48 hours as part of a Paula Vogel COVID âBake-Off,â where each writer had to incorporate certain assigned âingredientsâ into their creation of a piece of and for this time. This reading event was organized by Tanuja Devi Jagernauth and Quenna Barrett, and featured writing by Elon Sloan, Sofia Fey, Quenna Barrett, Sharai Bohannon, Liz Haas, Tanuja Devi Jagernauth, Ling Yue, and Casey VanWormer.
Each performer played their roles from their own home/locale, connecting with each other and the attendees live via Zoom. One of my favorite aspects of this online event was how âin communityâ I felt with the audience, who participated throughout by writing their fantastically creative and critically-minded responses to the ongoing action via the chatbox! Much hilarity and poignancy was had. I feel very fortunate for this collective gift. <3
Image descriptions: Two photos of a computer monitor, showing the author in medium close-up as she performs to another computerâs camera. Her clothes are brightly colored, as is the background. Whitish-blue light from the laptop reflects off her glasses and face. In the Zoom interface, chat notifications and messages are slightly visible at the bottom of the frame.
