On the evening of February 24, I'm debuting my first performance art piece, The Circle of Trust, as a The Circle of Trust is a full-sensory experience aimed at healing the physical and psychic trauma that many people are carrying around through metaphysics and performative arts centered in the modalities and rituals of the African Diaspora. 

Participants are invited to sing, cry, laugh, shout, or react however they see fit without judgement or any other impediments to true freedom from the varying degrees of aggression, oppression, and suppression people of color are faced with across the West.

Worried that “thousands” of votes ran the risk of not being counted, David Kronig, the Democratic Party of Wisconsin’s director of voter protection, fired off an email to Green Bay officials the day before the presidential election.

“We’re checking in regarding the guidance that went live on the City’s website, we think this morning, that the drop box at City Hall will be open until 8pm tomorrow,” Kronig wrote to Vanessa Chavez, Green Bay city attorney, Celestine Jeffreys, the Democrat mayor’s chief of staff, and Amaad Rivera, Green Bay community liaison.

Copied on the email are Devin Remiker, a Biden campaign staffer and the Democratic Party of Wisconsin’s former senior elections director, Daniel Melfi, Wisconsin state director of Joe Biden for President, Scott Spector, Wisconsin senior adviser for the Biden campaign, and Tanya Bjork, a veteran operative for Team Biden and former President Barack Obama.

In the email, Kronig wrote that the Wisconsin Elections Commission’s “clear guidance” on state election law requires ballots to physically be at Central Count locations by 8 p.m. to be counted. The city had advised voters that absentee ballots had to be in the drop boxes by 8 p.m. on Election Day.

The state Democrats and Biden campaign staffers urged the city to strictly follow the Wisconsin Elections Commission’s guidance on the point.

“We understand that there is some ambiguity in the statute on this point and there is an argument to be made that being in custody of the city clerk suffices. However, even if the city’s interpretation is entirely correct, we think that it is too big a risk to take,” Kronig wrote. “There are still thousands of unreturned ballots in Green Bay, and risking that some portion of those ballots might not be counted over an arguable legal interpretation just isn’t worth it.”

In other words, think of all those Biden votes the city might be missing. In a close election in battleground Wisconsin, the partisan operatives didn’t want to take any chances. The message turned more urgent.

“Against the backdrop of the [Wisconsin Elections Commission’s] guidance, I’d think there’s a less than 15% chance the city would win a lawsuit—with the end result that hundreds of thousands of Green Bay voters could be disenfranchised through no fault of their own.”

That was just a bit hyperbolic. Green Bay’s population is just over 100,000 people, with some 60,000 registered to vote in November’s election.

Dream Islands

Dream Islands is a group exhibition that takes the work of late Salt Spring Island-based potter Lari Robson (1942-2012) as a central point of inspiration. The exhibition features Robson’s pottery alongside new artworks by Derya Akay, Vanessa Brown, Maggie Groat, Yuki Kimura, and Anne Low, with writing by Sonnet L’Abbé that navigate islands of the imagination through intersections between art and craft practices.

As a creator of refined and useful pottery, Robson maintained a devoted and humble practice as an island potter. He sold vases, mugs, tea bowls, lidded jars, casseroles, jugs, serving bowls and other dishware every Saturday at the Salt Spring Island Farmers Market. He made personal and lasting relationships with his patrons and his community, and his pottery continues to be used and treasured in many households on Saltspring Island and beyond.

In December 2016, Nanaimo Art Gallery received a generous donation of ceramics from the estate of Victoria-based Curator and Art Historian Diane Carr (1941-2016) which included a unique stoneware jug made by Robson in the 1970s. Jugs are inherently social objects: they constantly empty themselves out through the act of giving. This spirit of reciprocity became a guiding inspiration for the exhibition.

For the occasion of Dream Islands each participating artist was gifted a pot of Robson’s to live with, and reflect on while creating new works for the exhibition. Through a variety of different media including weaving, metalwork, and blown glass the artists employ the materials and labours of craft, but as contemporary artworks, these creations avoid the burden of use. The artworks will be on display in dialogue with a selection of Robson’s pots borrowed from personal and private collections of his patrons, friends, and family, now also liberated from their daily use through new social and aesthetic encounters shared in the gallery.

On August 27, in dialogue with Dream Islands, we present a special event on Saysutshun (Newcastle Island), an island park on the traditional territory of the Snuneymuxw First Nations located fifteen minutes away from the Nanaimo Art Gallery in the Nanaimo harbour. Titled Island Dreams this event inverts Dream Islands by offering an embodied and communal experience of the physical space on an island, while encountering performances, poetry readings, and temporary installations by Tent Shop, Jeneen Frei Njootli, Gabi Dao, Tiziana La Melia, Sonnet L’Abbé with an introduction to Saysutshun by Snuneymuxw artist and storyteller Celestine Aleck.

These projects are presented as a part of Nanaimo Art Gallery’s celebration of our 40th anniversary in 2017. All year, through exhibitions, special projects, education programs and events, we explore the question “What does it mean to live on an Island?”

una lista di cose che sono successe negli ultimi quaranta giorni e di cui avrei voluto scrivere ma non l’ho fatto e adesso ne voglio scrivere perchè non le voglio dimenticare:

Io e Gregorio una mattina abbiamo voluto visitare Crema e la campagna nei suoi dintorni, dove tutto è silenzioso e ordinato. Io ero vestita solo di bianco. A lui non piacevano i miei pantaloni e ci sono rimasta male. Un’altra volta siamo andati ad un lago con i nostri amici, era domenica e abbiamo giocato a biliardino mentre bevevamo la birra al tramonto e non volevamo più tornare a casa, tranne Micaela che la sera doveva partire. Sono stata a Parigi per il mio lavoro: non ci tornavo da quando abitavo li e mi è sembrato tutto uguale. Sono andata a cena al Derrière, dove al posto delle sedie c’era un letto e al posto dei lavandini del bagno una vasca. C’era anche un armadio che in realtà era una porta per una stanza segreta, nella quale c’era una bella finestra che affacciava sul tetto e sopra quel tetto c’era una bici. Ho cominciato a leggere un libro che mi ha completamente assorbita e adesso quando smetto di leggere mi sembra che la vita vera sia quella dei miei personaggi e mi sento confusa quando intorno a me non vedo la campagna napoletana. Qualche settimana fa c’è stata un’ondata di caldo incredibile e sono uscita una sera e alle undici c’erano quarantadue gradi e io sembravo essere l’unica felice. Ho comprato un ventagio e bevuto davvero moltissima birra. Sono fiera di me per essere andata in palestra senza barare per tre mesi e ora sono asciutta e mi piace molto il mio fisico. Ho passato molti giorni ad essere nervosa e alcuni ad essere infelice. Ho avuto un ritardo di ventuno giorni. Ho litigato con Gregorio una notte per strada e sono scappata via e mentre pedalavo e mi arrabbiavo sempre di più ho bruscamente voltato per tornare indietro e sono caduta, ha iniziato a piovere, mi sono rialzata e l’ho raggiunto e spinto contro un muro urlando. Abbiamo litigato tante altre volte e per giorni ho pensato che non avremmo fatto mai più pace. Invece l’abbiamo fatta e ora non è tutto come prima ma sento di nuovo l’amore tra di noi. L’ho aiutato a fare il trasloco: ho pianto quando ho chiuso la porta della sua vecchia casa, quella dove sento che ci siamo innamorati e che adesso è stata messa in vendita. Ho pianto perchè non vedrò mai più le pareti celestine, il parquet vecchio che scricchiolava, la cucina con il pavimento terrazzo e il fermaporta che si chiamava Luigi, il letto in ferro battuto bianco e le pale sul soffitto. Adesso abitiamo nella stessa via, a poco più di due minuti a piedi. La mia amica Vanessa è stata a casa mia per un intero week end, e anche se non ci vedevamo da quattro anni è stato come non essersi mai lasciate. E’ stato come svegliarsi e avere di colpo semplicemente quattro anni in più. Le ho fatto visitare la città, siamo state alla marcia del Pride, siamo andate a una grigliata di soli hamburger :( . L’estate è arrivata e poi è andata via, ieri sono uscita con il maglione, oggi ho la pancia scoperta, domani vado ad un concerto in un castello, entrambe le mie piante di basilico sono vive, Gregorio mi ha regalato una pianta di ananas che è morta perchè le ho dato troppa acqua, mia sorella ora sta bene ed è andata a Siena per una settimana, mio fratello grande è tornato in Italia, mio fratello piccolo si è laureato, sono stata a Como e ho visitato Villa del Balbianello e imparato tutto su Guido Monzino, la settimana scorsa ho marinato il lavoro per due giorni perchè ero troppo stanca ma in realtà uno dei due sono uscita con il mio amico a bere la birra in un bar di vecchietti campani alle quattro di pomeriggio, ho quasi finito Stranger Things e non mi piace ma mi piace come Gregorio ieri sera mi si è addormentato addosso mentre lo guardavamo, giovedì vado a farmi fare un plantare perchè mi fa male un malleolo, a pranzo ho mangiato l’insalata di riso che aveva preparato papà domenica e mi è sembrato di essere a casa mia con la mia famiglia anche se ero in un’altra città con i miei colleghi e non capisco se sia sciocco essere felici quando tanto poi ti tocca essere di nuovo tristi ma oggi c’è di nuovo il sole e io cosa ci posso fare.

Capítulo 01 – Terça-feira, 29 de janeiro Nos anos 80, Janaína e os filhos, João e Jerônimo, assistem ao programa Patotinha Mágica. Com o programa em queda de audiência, Lidiane instrui Manuzita a anunciar um concurso para escolher um novo integrante. João e Jerônimo ficam interessados e fogem para o Rio para participar da seleção. Os dois são escolhidos e a Patotinha Mágica vira um trio. João desmaia no palco durante uma grande apresentação e é decretado o fim do grupo. Lidiane proíbe Manu e João de se encontrarem. Nos anos 90, João comanda um programa na rádio Maremoto. Manu, uma jovem aspirante a atriz, não tem sucesso na carreira. Jerônimo vive em Armação do Sul sem ocupação definida. Kika avisa a Manu sobre um teste no filme de Herculano. Manu e João se reencontram por acaso após muitos anos.

Capítulo 02 – Quarta-feira, 30 de janeiro João se oferece para consertar o carro de Manu. Janaína se desespera ao ser avisada que Jerônimo sofreu um acidente de moto. João comenta com Manu que seu sonho é transformar o Onda Cavada em um programa de TV. Lidiane dá aulas de jazz na academia. Herculano demonstra interesse em Janaína. João e Manu se beijam. Jerônimo revela a Janaína que perdeu dinheiro no pôquer. Lidiane descobre que Manu fará uma participação no filme de Herculano. Janaína esconde de João que gastou o dinheiro do restaurante para pagar a dívida de Jerônimo. Manu reconhece Herculano como o parceiro de Lidiane no filme de pornochanchada. Lidiane e Jofre vão atrás de Manu em Armação do Sul. Janaína decide cozinhar ao ver Herculano na pousada. Jerônimo sente ciúmes ao reconhecer Manu beijando João.

Capítulo 03 – Quinta-feira, 31 de janeiro Herculano elogia a comida de Janaína. João ajuda Manu a decorar o texto. Lidiane conta a todos que Herculano foi seu parceiro em um filme de pornochanchada e ele retira Manu do elenco de seu filme. Janaína e Herculano se beijam. Candé avisa a Mercedes que Quinzinho escolheu Nicole Ferraz para apresentar o principal programa da PopTv. Jerônimo detona o filme da máquina fotográfica de uma fã de João, com fotos do irmão e de Manu juntos. Janaína oferece seus serviços de cozinheira para Herculano e a equipe de cinema. Jerônimo pede emprego a Tutano, que pergunta ao rapaz se ele tem coragem de participar de um assalto.

Capítulo 04 – Sexta-feira, 01 de fevereiro Mercedes repreende Quinzinho por não ter ido à reunião na PopTv. Quinzinho diz à mãe que quer se casar com Larissa. Herculano convida Janaína para sair. Lidiane avisa a Jofre que surgiu uma oportunidade para Manu participar de uma novela. Lidiane e Janaína flagram Manu e João aos beijos. Vanessa furta o perfume de Larissa. Jerônimo observa Herculano conversando com João. Herculano se declara para Janaína. João observa Jerônimo entrando no carro de Magaiver. Gisela liga para Herculano para avisar que a filha deles está internada.

Capítulo 05 – Sábado, 02 de fevereiro Herculano fica furioso ao saber que Gisela viajou e deixou a filha adoentada. Janaína fica decepcionada ao saber que Herculano voltou para o Rio de Janeiro sem se despedir dela. Madá entra em transe e intui que o nome de sua confecção será Top Wave. Quinzão informa a Herculano que Isadora deve ser operada. Vanessa pede abrigo na casa de Larissa. Quinzinho aprova a camiseta criada por Álamo. Tutano avisa a Jerônimo que eles vão roubar um carro para fazer o assalto. O médico avisa que a cirurgia de Isadora correu bem. Herculano conta a Diana que está apaixonado por Janaína. João surpreende Jerônimo no carro com Tutano.

Capítulo 06 – Segunda-feira, 04 de fevereiro Jerônimo e João brigam, e Janaína fica abalada ao ver os filhos feridos. Madá comenta com Diana que teme que a Top Wave possa prejudicar seu casamento com Álamo. Depois que Janaína diz que não vai expulsar Jerônimo de casa, João resolve ir embora de Armação do Sul. Gisela tenta se desculpar pelo estado em que chegou ao hospital, mas Herculano não lhe dá atenção. Lidiane conta a Jofre que Manu pode ser escalada para a novela Tieta. Janaína fecha negócio com Eulália para a aquisição do espaço para o restaurante. Mercedes dá um ultimato a Herculano. Herculano garante a Diana que não se submeterá às ameaças de Mercedes, depois que conheceu Janaína. Jerônimo sugere a Janaína que eles se mudem para o Rio de Janeiro. Jerônimo furta o carro de João para fazer um assalto com Tutano. Durante o assalto, Jerônimo entra em pânico ao ver uma mulher denunciando o roubo.

Capítulo 07 – Terça-feira, 05 de fevereiro Tutano, Magaiver e Louro conseguem escapar da polícia. Isadora recebe alta do hospital. Guilherme Augusto decide deixar Armação do Sul depois que Herculano avisa sobre a suspensão das filmagens. Jerônimo furta as joias de Janaína e o dinheiro de Celestine com a intenção de fugir. João desconfia que Jerônimo usou seu carro e comenta com Janaína. Madá consulta as cartas para Álamo. João procura Jerônimo para tranquilizar a mãe. Herculano conta a Gisele que está endividado. Tutano, Magaiver e Louro invadem a pousada atrás de Jerônimo. Herculano deixa claro para Gisele que quer o divórcio. João deduz que o irmão pode estar envolvido no assalto ao mercado. Celestine se desespera ao constatar que roubaram seus dólares. Jerônimo chega ao Rio de Janeiro.

Capítulo 08 – Quarta-feira, 06 de fevereiro Tutano e seus comparsas são obrigados a fugir de Armação do Sul e se mudam para Argentina. O delegado deduz que Tutano, Magaiver e Louro roubaram os dólares de Celestine. Jerônimo se hospeda na pensão de Odélia e traça um plano para se aproximar de Quinzinho. Celestine avisa a Janaína que fechará a pensão e que vai embora para a França. Kika alerta João que viu Jerônimo no aeroporto, indo para o Rio de Janeiro. Janaína deixa claro para João que não vai desistir de encontrar Jerônimo. Jerônimo chega até Quinzinho, fingindo conhecer Tobé, e se apresenta com o nome de Rojê Guerreiro. Jerônimo consegue se hospedar na suíte presidencial do hotel de Quinzão. Manu não aprova o visual encomendado a Pierre por Lidiane e fica apavorada. Madá diz a Gisela que as cartas revelam que Herculano tem outro amor. Patrick impressiona Lidiane. Celestine conta a Herculano que Janaína foi para o Rio de Janeiro. João tenta tranquilizar Janaína durante a viagem para o Rio de Janeiro à procura de Jerônimo.

Capítulo 09 – Quinta-feira, 07 de fevereiro Janaína e João encontram a cadela de Tutano perdida na estrada e resgatam o animal. Quinzinho desconfia do jeito de Jerônimo. Patrick reconhece Lidiane dos filmes de pornochanchada, e os dois ficam juntos. Janaína e João surpreendem Diego e sua família ao chegar à casa de Janice. João vai ao encontro de Manu e estranha seu novo visual novo. Gisela pede a Quinzinho para contratar Herculano para a PopTV. Herculano dispensa sua equipe das gravações do filme. Nicole convence Quinzinho a fazer um show de lambada na festa da PopTV. Jerônimo rouba a moto de Catraca com as camisetas-convites para a festa da emissora. Vanessa furta uma camiseta de Diego. Janaína descobre uma pista sobre o paradeiro de Jerônimo. Candé acusa Catraca de estar dando golpe inventando o roubo de sua moto. Janaína pede a Galdino que a leve até Jerônimo. João leva Manu para conhecer seu apartamento, mas ambos se surpreendem ao encontrar Moana na cama do radialista.

Capítulo 10 – Sexta-feira, 08 de fevereiro João tenta se explicar para Manu, mas a menina vai embora do local. Janaína promete dinheiro a Galdino, caso ele descubra o paradeiro de Jerônimo. Moana se desculpa com João. Álamo defende Diego e Catraca, e manda Quinzinho soltá-los. Otoniel conta a Janice que foi demitido. Janaína se propõe a ajudar a família de Janice, se candidatando à vaga de vendedora da confecção de Álamo. Raimundo planeja novas estratégias para o Baião de Dois. Janaína pega roupas em consignação na confecção de Álamo para vender. Manu se emociona ao escutar a música do Patotinha Mágica e com a declaração de amor de João na Maremoto FM. Nicole pressiona Quinzinho a terminar com Larissa. Jerônimo conhece Mercedes e Quinzão. Mercedes desconfia de Jerônimo/Rojê. Otoniel consegue resgatar a carteira de Raimundo, que havia sido furtada. Jerônimo conversa com Moana e se surpreende ao ver Galdino caminhando em sua direção.

Capítulo 11 – Sábado, 09 de fevereiro Jerônimo manda Galdino avisar a Janaína que ele deixou o Rio de Janeiro. Galdino inventa para Janaína que Jerônimo foi para Guarapari. Janaína pensa em Herculano. Herculano decide aceitar o emprego na PopTV. Jerônimo aciona o alarme de incêndio do hotel e aproveita a confusão para furtar o fichário do balcão. João é demitido da rádio. Otoniel devolve a carteira a Raimundo e consegue um emprego no restaurante. Kika decide dar a Manu as camisetas-convite para a festa. João deixa Janaína esperançosa ao contar que Herculano esteve na rádio. Jerônimo liga para Vera, fingindo ser da PopTV americana, e arma para ir à festa como representante de uma celebridade. Janaína vai até a casa de Gisela para entregar uma camiseta-convite para a festa e se surpreende ao ver Herculano com a família.

The Nightmare Before Christmas (UK) or US — After all I work in animation, it is beautiful, but this is not one for younger kids and you need to love Tim Burton. — Emilie

Paper Planes (UK)  or US  — A real feel good film! — Vanessa

The Sound of Music (UK) or  US  — Always a favourite film, year round! It is simply the most uplifting, and what better than watching it indoors under cosy eiderdowns! — Everyone 

Mary Poppins (UK) or US — Has to be seen once a year, and Christmas is a good time. — Esther 

The Incredibles (UK) or US — Not strictly a Christmas movie but an animated movie that the whole family can hucker down and watch. — Emilie

Disney Santa Paws 2 – The Santa Pups (UK) or US — A feel good cheesy sing along movie. My daughter knew every song from this movie by the time she was 4. — Kate

Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer (UK) or US — As a child I loved watching the Christmas specials on television. The 1964 version of Rudolph is an absolute classic and even as an adult I look forward to watching it once a year! — Shannon

Paddington (UK) or US — I could watch this film over and over again, let alone the children! — Vanessa

Miracle On 34th Street (UK) or US — Such a lovely feel good film, I loved this as a kid and love snuggling up with my kids to watch it every year. — Kate

The Snowman (UK) or US — The softest, gentlest, and most beautiful illustrations. The music alone is worth it. — Lara

A Christmas Story (UK) or US — So fun and retro. I watched it every year as a kid and now share it with mine. — Shannon

Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas (UK) or US  — The Boris Karloff version of The Grinch is another Christmas classic. As excellent today as it was when I was a child! — Shannon

Home Alone (UK) or US — No matter how many times we’ve watched this movie, we always end up in hysterics. Such a good one! — Courtney 

Frosty The Snowman (UK) or US — The original Frosty the Snowman and still the very best. — Shannon
