A newly uncovered video shows Eddie Van Halen in his 5150 Studios at some point in the mid-1980s working on the guitar parts for Van Halen's "Amsterdam," a song which wouldn't publicly emerge until years later on the rock group's 1995 album, Balance.
youtube
Shared by fansite Van Halen Brazil on Sunday (June 6), the clip joins another rare Van Halen video that recently surfaced. That same day, previously unseen 1981 footage of the band performing at a prehistoric-themed Italian park among large sculptures of dinosaurs finally put an end to VH fans' longtime questions about the odd gig, which had until now remained a mysterious performance only documented in photos.
Just a handful of years later, Eddie was in his home studio, hashing out a riff — it's an occurrence that certainly wasn't uncommon around the 5150 compound. Watch the video of EVH hammering out "Amsterdam" in the studio down toward the bottom of this post.
"Never before seen footage of Eddie Van Halen playing the song 'Amsterdam' [in] 5150 Studios," an introduction at the top of the clip explains. "The year is 1985, ten years prior to the official release of the song on Balance."
However, the precise year the video was filmed is in dispute. While Van Halen Brazil put the footage at 1985, Ultimate Classic Rock surmised that it more likely came from some point in late '86 or '87, based on Eddie's hairstyle and the "Team Jams National Champs 1986" jersey he's wearing.
Regardless, the footage evinces further proof of Eddie's eager work ethic in the recording studio, especially when it came to writing memorable guitar riffs. On top of that, it serves as a bittersweet reminder of the massive talent we lost when the Van Halen guitarist died last year at the age of 65, his death signifying the end of the influential rock group.
Wolfgang Van Halen, Eddie's 30-year-old son and a former Van Halen bassist, is currently carrying the rock torch with his own outfit, Mammoth WVH. The outfit's debut LP comes out this Friday (June 11).

Chuck Klosterman: Fargo Rock City: A Heavy Metal Odyssey in Rural North Dakota (2001)
As a metal-head who put up with the arrogant snubs of fellow Gen-X'ers raised on college rock and other elitist music scenes, I felt immense, almost perverse pleasure, when Chuck Klosterman -- someone weaned on, of all things '80s hair metal -- emerged among the very best music writers of our generation.
And I don't really like hair metal, either!
Nor do I agree with Klosterman, half the time, but I do think his stories in Fargo Rock City combined a clarity, humor, and the relatable modesty of one forced to defend their taste all their lives (I can relate) into an irresistible formula that turned him into a best-selling sensation and subsequently led him to hipster rag Spin and prestigious brands like GQ, Esquire, and The Guardian, among others.
Back to the Heavy Metal Odyssey at hand, Klosterman revisits his unglamorous teenage life in distant North Dakota as heard through the major musical accomplishments of cock-rockers like Mötley Crüe and Def Leppard, Bon Jovi and Bulletboys, Lita Ford and Poison, as well as semi-respectable names like Van Halen, Metallica, Iron Maiden, and Guns n' Roses.
In the end, Chuck's triumph lies in reminding ALL of us Gen-X'ers of what it felt like to live and die by your favorite artists during those final, MTV-dominated days preceding the advent of the Internet, let alone mobile phones.
Yes, this was a primordial era when teenagers still knew the meaning of true isolation and experienced it to their very souls, whether they lived in Fargo, London, New York, or, in my case, São Paulo, Brazil.
p.s. -- Klosterman's definitive treatise about Kiss for Grantland, written on the occasion of their induction into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame, may be the single greatest piece of writing about any American hard rock band EVER -- I revisit it at least once a year.
Featured Records:
Def Leppard: Hysteria (1987)
Bon Jovi: Slippery When Wet (1986)
Ratt: Dancing Undercover (1986)

Queen live at Barra da Tijuca in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - January 19, 1985
(x)
The second night in Rio is as epic as the first. Freddie's voice isn't in quite as good shape as it was last week, but he and the band give their all in a show that would turn out to be a final farewell. This concert marks the end of Queen's love affair with South America, a continent where the band played a dozen shows to over a million people.
Brian isn't able to grab his slide in time for the Tie Your Mother Down guitar solo, and the end result is an aggressive and unique take on it. He also lets it rip in the improv section of Keep Yourself Alive.
In the piano bit between Somebody To Love and Killer Queen, Freddie leads the band into the The March Of The Black Queen jam as he did in Sun City last year. This would happen many times in 1985.
The vocal harmonies in Liar are excellent.
The improvisation section before It's A Hard Life is much longer tonight, consisting of a few lines reworked for the Brazilian audience. It would be officially released in the UK in 1995 as "Rock In Rio Blues", on the "A Winter's Tale" CD single. It was also released on the US CD single of "Too Much Love Will Kill You" in 1995, and later on disc 2 of the 2011 deluxe edition of the final Queen album, "Made In Heaven."
After It's A Hard Life, Freddie begins his vocal duel with the audience with a few bits he used in Now I'm Here a few years back. At the end of it, he proclaims, "Everybody's beautiful".
He does some superb improv at the beginning of Now I'm Here, which is seen on the official VHS.
Brian, before Is This The World We Created, referring to his electric classical guitar: "I have no idea if this little bugger's gonna stay in tune, but we'll try this anyway." Freddie messes up the lyrics of the second chorus, singing "Is this the world we devestated, against the bone" instead of "right to the bone." It's otherwise a very nice version of the ballad.
He then introduces Love Of My Life: "You want to sing with us? Alright. Well, this is especially for you." He changes the subject briefly, saying "I hope you're not too wet out there," as it is raining throughout the show. He continues, "I have to tell you that this song is very special to the people of South America, and we thank you very much for making it special throughtout the world. This is called Love Of My Life." As seen on the video, both he and Freddie are clearly moved by a quarter of a million people, most of whose first language isn't English, singing the song perfectly. The audience chant Brian's name throughout the interlude, and in the emotion of the moment he has to carefully make his way through it.
During his solo spot, Brian plays bits of "Let Me Out", one of the songs from his 1983 solo mini-LP with Eddie Van Halen and others called "Star Fleet Project". He began his solo with an EBow, as he did last week in Rio. This is the last time he has played with an EBow live to date.
Freddie's emotive ending to Bohemian Rhapsody is one-of-a-kind.
Like last week, Freddie introduces Radio Ga Ga - the only times he would do this.
In light of last week's incident, Freddie doesn't come out with his boobs and wig for I Want To Break Free, as seen on the official VHS.
The hour-long (48 minutes without commercials) Globo TV broadcast of this concert was watched by about 200 million people. It showed some shots from different angles than were seen on the official release. The following songs were shown: Tear It Up, Tie Your Mother Down, Under Pressure, Somebody To Love, Killer Queen, Seven Seas Of Rhye, Keep Yourself Alive, Liar, Rock In Rio Blues, It's A Hard Life, Dragon Attack, Now I'm Here, Love Of My Life, and Crazy Little Thing Called Love. In the last song, John is seen smirking at Freddie's overt Elvis impression in the second verse.
We Are The Champions from the second night was also aired on Globo TV.
Brian and John appeared on MTV Japan in May to promote the VHS release, and clips from both Rio shows were shown. The clips of Love Of My Life, I Want To Break Free, We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions are from the second night (the last two songs are notable, as the first night was used for those songs on the video release).
On February 25, Brian would make a guest appearance on a radio show and he actually acted as the DJ for an hour or two. He had a few words to say when asked if he had an outstanding memory from Rio:
"Just looking at the crowd, really. We never quite believed that it was going to happen and we were going to get quarter of a million people a night or whatever, and it just actually happened. They all rolled up and one night it was pouring with rain and they were still there until two in the morning from four in the afternoon. It was very well organized and very well lit which is unusual so you could actually see the audience very well, all in pools of different coloured lights. I think there is going to be a video of that some time and perhaps people will be able to see, but it was quite something I must say. And there was the feeling of it being the first time, which it was, because there never was that much rock and roll in Rio. Now there is mate, I tell you!"
This version of Love Of My Life was released on a cassette single in the US. It is a more raw mix, as the audience was artificially piped up for much of the official VHS release. A few more words from Brian and Freddie are heard before and after the song than on the VHS.
The fifth picture was taken by Antonio Henrique Seligman, and the last one was taken by Dave Matkin.

Megastar Monday: The Kinks
Good morning chickens,
I have to be on the ball for the next two weeks chickens, I don’t have any time for messing around with the intros as I am almost in the timezone in which the show originates. Okay so I am four hours out, but that still cuts my time by four hours. Where am I you ask? I have been sent to Brazil for a couple of weeks, which is a nice change from India and Russia.
But enough of that, lets talk about today’s Megastar Artist: The Kinks. I really have to send a big thank you out to @loveaxiomatic for suggesting them. I had forgotten how much I dig the Kinks. Looking through their catalogue of music really re-introduced me to some great music.
The Kinks are an English rock band formed in Muswell Hill, North London, in 1964 by brothers Ray and Dave Davies. They are regarded as one of the most influential rock bands of the 1960s. The band emerged during the height of British rhythm and blues and Merseybeat, and were briefly part of the British Invasion of the United States until their touring ban in 1965 (as a result of constant fighting between the brothers). Their third single, the Ray Davies-penned "You Really Got Me", became an international hit, topping the charts in the United Kingdom and reaching the Top 10 in the United States. Their music was influenced by a wide range of genres, including rhythm and blues, British music hall, folk and country. They gained a reputation for reflecting English culture and lifestyle, fuelled by Ray Davies' observational writing style, and are considered one of the most influential groups of the period.
Early works included albums such as Face to Face (1966), Something Else (1967), The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society (1968), Arthur (1969), Lola Versus Powerman (1970), Muswell Hillbillies (1971), along with their accompanying singles. After a fallow period in the mid-1970s, the band experienced a revival during the late 1970s and early 1980s with their albums Sleepwalker (1977), Misfits (1978), Low Budget (1979), Give the People What They Want (1981) and State of Confusion (1983). In addition, groups such as Van Halen, the Jam, the Knack, the Pretenders and the Fall covered their songs, helping to boost the Kinks' record sales. In the 1990s, Britpop acts such as Blur and Oasis cited the band as a major influence.
Ray Davies (lead vocals, rhythm guitar) and Dave Davies (lead guitar, vocals) remained members throughout the band's 32-year run. Longest-serving member Mick Avory (drums and percussion) was replaced by Bob Henrit, formerly of Argent, in 1984. Original bass guitarist Pete Quaife was replaced by John Dalton in 1969, and Dalton was in turn replaced by Jim Rodford in 1978. Session keyboardist Nicky Hopkins accompanied the band in the studio for many of their recordings in the mid-to-late 1960s. In 1969 the band became an official five-piece when keyboardist John Gosling joined them, being replaced by Ian Gibbons in 1979, who remained in the band until they broke up in 1996; a result of the commercial failures of their last few albums and creative tension between the Davies brothers. In 2018, Ray Davies and Dave Davies said they are working with Mick Avory on a new Kinks album. ~Wikipedia
With 24 studio albums (and 4 live) to their credit, I can only imagine how fantastic a 25th album will be. Ax and I did our best to bring you music from just about every album the Kinks have released. We hope you enjoy!
Girls will be boys and boys will be girls kisses,
Love Axiomatic and the Punk Mummy
