Propaganda under the cut!

Archibald and Ludovico:

"This fandom consists of like 5 people so I won't be surprised if this doesn't get in or gets knocked out immediately but I gotta submit them.

Archibald Clare is a mentath, a fantasy-equivalent social class of Sherlock Holmes-expies cranked to eleven, trained to reject emotion and rely only on logic; he's really bad at the rejecting emotion bit but is in denial about it. Ludovico Valentinelli is an Italian prince turned assassin who is hired as Clare's bodyguard. Despite a rocky introduction, Ludo decides he likes Clare enough to 'retire' and becomes Clare's valet (aka Clare has zero survival instincts and needs a permanent bodyguard and Ludo decides he's going to do it), much to Clare's displeasure.

As a side note, Clare's first thought upon seeing Ludo is that he's roughly handsome despite heavy scarring and spends the rest of the first book calling him not-pretty. Like he needs to tell himself that all the time. For Ludo's part, he respects Clare enough to drop the obfuscating stupidity and fake accent he uses (sometimes). It's made very clear that he doesn't care if people live or die as long as it's not his paycheck and pride on the line; he could walk away and never look back after the bodyguard gig is done. And instead he decides to move in and be Clare's live-in bodyguard and assistant after less than a week of knowing him.

Then there's a two year timeskip and Ludo's become indispensable to Clare. They've settled comfortably into both a domestic and working partnership despite both having extremely strong personalities. It takes watching Ludo torture someone to death for Clare to remember that oh right, this man is extremely dangerous and he still has no issues interacting with him normally (and still reminds himself that Ludo is not-pretty, the level of denial in this man I swear).

And then Ludo dies. He tries to stop a suicide bomber and instead gets caught in the blast point blank. Clare should have died in the same explosion but instead discovers he's near invulnerable and immortal and holds and comforts Ludo through his last breaths. And then falls apart. Gets drunk and tries to cut off limbs and blow himself up. Even someone who was introduced in the story after Ludo's death flat out accuses Clare of being in love with him, and Clare's only objection is that mentaths don't love, not that he doesn't or can't love, mentaths don't. It takes an opium trip for him to even start to process Ludo's death.

The two of them found the perfect partners in each other, and now Clare has to live with that for eternity."

SFWA Posthumously Presents Jennell Jaquays with the 2024 Kate Wilhelm Solstice Award

A multi-award winning and honored artist, game designer, editor, and activist, Jennell Jaquays left an indelible mark on the gaming industry and SFF community for nearly fifty years. Ms. Jaquays’ career began in college, when she and her friends created “The Dungeoneer,” one of the first licensed Dungeons and Dragons fanzines. Now, from magazines to books, Ms. Jaquays’ art can be seen on multiple covers and throughout the pages of the many different forms and iterations of Dungeons and Dragons’ media. Having designed two modules of her own, “Dark Tower” and “The Caverns of Thracia,”  her writing was celebrated by players for eschewing traditional and linear game mechanics and are not only playable today–but continue to inspire game designers and GMs. Also known for her game industry work at companies such as Coleco, TSR, and id Software, Ms. Jaquays designed and contributed to multiple projects such as Coleco Vision, certain levels on the Quake II and III video games, arcade conversions of Pac-Man and Donkey-Kong, Halo Wars, and created an expansion pack in Age of Empires III. Ms. Jaquays was nominated for multiple H.G. Wells Awards for her work and creation of the “Dark Tower” D&D module and for her design and illustrations on“Griffin Mountain.” Her work with Coleco’s WarGames won her the 1984 Summer C.E.S. original software award. Additionally, Castle Greyhawk won an Origins Gamer’s Choice Award for “Best Role-Playing Adventure,” and in 2017, the Academy of Adventure Gaming Arts & Design inducted Ms. Jaquays into their hall of fame. Inspired by her own journey, Ms. Jaquays also became a recognized transgender activist, spending time working as the creative director of the Transgender Human Rights Institute. “A beacon of hope and inspiration, Jennell Jaquays worked tirelessly in the spirit of community while gifting us with her art, her games, and her stories for almost fifty years,” said SFWA Director-at-Large, Monica Valentinelli. “The Board is honored to commemorate Jennell Jaquays and her indelible legacy as an artist, writer, and game designer in the video game and tabletop roleplaying industries.” Accepting on behalf of Ms. Jaquays at the 59th Annual Nebula Awards is her wife, Rebecca Heineman.

Nocturama is a kind of existential thriller in which a group of young people bomb and burn various Parisian landmarks. I use the word "existential" because their terrorism appears to be unmotivated; it's an acte gratuit thatseems to stem from no political or social dissatisfaction. The narrative is elliptical: We watch the members of the group as they cross Paris to assemble at their various assigned targets before we even know where they're going and why. Eventually, there's a flashback that shows their preparatory meeting, but even that supplies only the most rudimentary information: that the explosive is semtex, which has been procured for them an older man named Greg (Vincent Rottiers). Their several missions accomplished, they regroup in a department store that's closed for the night, where they raid the food and wine department, try on the clothes, listen to music, and watch the news, which eventually reveals that their hideout has been discovered. Two of them are missing: One is killed in a showdown with a security guard, while Greg suffers a fate that we learn about in a curious way. The outcome is presented with a cold-blooded detachment. Bertrand Bonello breaks no new ground for the thriller genre, but skillfully plays with the viewer's reactions to the young protagonists, an alternation of censure and sympathy.

Elle l'accuse d'avoir commis des gestes déplacés et non désirés, qualifiables d'agressions sexuelles. Dans son témoignage, elle met également en lumière un silence complice de l'industrie musicale face à de tels actes. Appels à la parole libérée et le refus de tout commentaire Jenna Boulmedaïs ne s'arrête pas là et dénonce aussi les agissements de Nicolas Bedos et de Gérard Depardieu. Elle appelle à briser le silence sur ces actes graves et exhorte les victimes potentielles à témoigner. Malgré le soutien de nombreux fans et acteurs de la scène musicale sur les réseaux sociaux, le chanteur Lomepal n'a pas encore réagi publiquement aux accusations. Son entourage refuse tout commentaire pour le moment. Les accusations de Jenna Boulmedaïs marquent un tournant dans l'industrie musicale en mettant en lumière des comportements inacceptables qui étaient restés jusqu'à présent étouffés. La parole libérée de la rédactrice en chef peut encourager d'autres victimes à témoigner et mettre en place une prise de conscience collective sur la nécessité de condamner fermement de tels agissements.
