Valentine's Day at the Roadhouse - A Recap

February 14-16, 2021

TL:DR

Actors Chad Linberg (Ash) and Samantha Ferris (Ellen) made tweets to role play a Valentine’s Day celebration at the Roadhouse. Several of their comments seemed to be suggesting that they would celebrate the wedding of Dean and Cas, and fans took this idea and ran with it. On the fourteenth, fans held their own celebration across social media platforms by joyfully sharing writing, art, headcanons, and memes, getting #DeanCasWedding trending in the process. Ferris and Lindburg did not roleplay a wedding, and both actors became defensive when the subject was brought up, stating that holding a gay wedding would fail to “uphold the integrity & spirit of the show” and that they had never suggested anything else. Fans were hurt and frustrated by these responses, as well as Lindburg’s liking of a post that claimed Destiel supporters have been “gaslighting the rest of the fandom for 10+ years.” Other people associated with the Supernatural community including actor Kat Ramdeen, writer Eric Charmelo, and the official account for Stands merchandising, responded to fans in a more positive way.

Last week, actors Chad Linberg (Ash) and Samantha Ferris (Ellen) announced their decision to roleplay a Valentine’s day celebration at the Roadhouse. Lindburg and Ferris had already successfully liveblogged a birthday party for Dean Winchester on January 24 and the reopening of the Roadhouse bar on February 10 (Kat Ramdeen also rp-d this event.) Both Ferris and Lindburg mentioned “wedding season” in their posts, which piqued fan interest, and fans latched on to the idea that they might be planning a Deancas wedding. This theory was further supported by Lindburg’s own interactions with fans: [this one might be too confusing: at one point, he failed to like--or possibly liked and then quickly unliked, a tweet that read “don't like this reply if a deancas wedding is gonna happen at the roadhouse” (2). He directed fans with ‘questions’ to an account who was a public destiel shipper (3) He also responded to a tweet reading “people think you guys are celebrating a Destiel wedding, that isn’t the case of course.” with “Um no sorry...you did NOT get the memo” (4)

On February 14 #DeanCasWedding trended on twitter as fans across the world staged their own, fan-created celebration by joyfully sharing writing, art, headcanons, and memes. Ferris and Lindburg wrote innocuous Roadhouse update tweets all day long, including a sequence where Lindburg got in a fight with Elvis, and concluding with the partial destruction of the Roadhouse by unknown forces. No mention was made of the wedding by either actor.

However, partway through Monday February 15, Ferris and Lindburg began addressing questions as to why they had hinted they would hold a wedding and then not followed through.

Chad Lindburg responded that he never intended to imply that he would hold a Deancas wedding, and issued this statement.

“Yes, among other things, the Roadhouse does “weddings.” I had NO idea this would be taken out of context..If you thought you were sold something else, you weren't...this was a way to bring people together and have fun. State your views, however, I’ll be blocking any rude or nastiness today.”(5)

Lindburg did go on to block multiple twitter users who tried to engage with him on this topic. Over the next few days, Lindburg’s tweets ranged from attempts to validate fan’s feelings, such as “No one is delusional. You're all validated. Remember, we're all just having fun with our imaginations. And actually, the Fandom has just as much weight as the actors. It goes both ways. We can't have one without the other. We're grateful for all of you.” (6) to hostile, such as replying “Thank you [hands clasped emoji]” to a tweet that read “Ironically the ones complaining about being gaslit by you are the ones that have been gaslighting the rest of the fandom for 10+ years.” (7)

Samantha Ferris responded that they would never hold a DeanCas wedding because Supernatural is “a story about family, bonds, and supernatural power struggles. The direction has never included sexuality or romance” and that she believed that her and Lindburg’s “role is to uphold the integrity & spirit of the show” and that “it would be disrespectful to all the people who tried to tell this tale if we validated it [the Deancas relationship]” (8) Her full tweets on the matter read,

“Ima say this once then move on. @ChadLindberg & I can’t follow you down that road. As part of the storyline, our role is to uphold the integrity & spirit of the show: it’s a story about family, bonds, and supernatural power struggles. The direction never included sexuality or romance. That was never what it was supposed to be about. So to honour the cast, crew, and creators, we respect their intentions. You wanna create your side story? Go for it. But it would be disrespectful to all the people who tried to tell this tale if we validated it…”

Ferris and Lindburg have continued to roleplay their Roadhouse updates, although they have both lost followers in fan interest after the events of this week.

Other people associated with the spn community responded more positively: Writer Eric Charmelo responded to the wedding posting by liking #DeancasWedding fanart (9). Actor Kat Ramdeen (Alex) tweeted on Valentine’s day

“I love you #SPNFamily I see you”

accompanied by a rainbow heart and a Social justice Pride Flag made up of hearts (10). Stands, a company that sells fandom merchandise made in collaboration with the actors and gives a portion of proceeds to charity, sent out these two supportive tweets in response to the drama in the Supernatural community

“I’ve just caught up and I’m sorry y’all are having a rough go. I love you. <3” (11)

and

“It’s so rare I’m actually mad but to be clear- absolutely no one gets to define how you experience something you love. Just go on with your bad selves and enjoy the things that make you happy. As if the last two years haven’t been shit enough. Seize your moments, ignore the rest” (12)

Hellsing Liveblog Chapters 25-27

This is the first leg of the “D” arc. I had originally planned on trying to do the whole thing in one post, but it’s pretty long and meanders in places, so instead I’m going to break it up, starting with the part that wraps up volume 4 of the collected editions.

Much of these first three chapters just showcases Millennium preparing to depart their secret headquarters in Brazil. They have three blimps, maybe more. We already saw the Graf Zeppelin III, but there’s also a Graf Zeppelin II and a Hindenberg II. Also, the Major refers to all of this as “Operation Sea Lion 2″. The original “Operation Sea Lion” was Nazi Germany’s plan to invade the U.K. during World War II. It was never enacted, however, because the Germans couldn’t establish air and naval superiority over the British. Basically, the Major is declaring that he has finally achieved what Hilter could not, thanks to his “Last Battalion” of 1000 vampire soldiers.

The bridge of his flagship (flagblimp) has this big comfy chair on a robot arm, and a panoramic world map. The arrows on the map point in all sorts of nutty directions, including the United States and other European nations. I could have sworn I had heard some mention in Hellsing Ultimate of Millennium sending forces to the U.S., but the international angle was never mentioned again, and I assumed that I must have imagined it. In any event, the Major made it clear that his target is Alucard specifically, so it doesn’t make a lot of sense to invade places where Alucard is not.

The Major prepares to take his seat only to find Warrant Officer Schrödinger sitting in his chair. Remember, Schrödinger inexplicably teleported himself to London to address Hellsing and Iscariot, and then he got shot and killed for his trouble. But now he’s back, alive and well. He mocks the Major for being to slow, and the Doctor scolds him for his insolence, but the Major orders Doc to back off. This is a running gag throughout the rest of the series. The Doctor keeps trying to chastise Schrödinger, but the Major lets him do whatever the boy wants, almost like he’s some favorite pet.

Meanwhile, an unidentified helicopter tries to land on a British carrier, the H.M.S. Eagle. The Captain orders his crew to open fire, but the first officer suddenly does this:

So yeah, the first officer is a vampire now, and he’s sold out Queen and Country for Millennium. He and a handful of vampire crewmen kill the rest of the crew and turn them all into ghouls, allowing the helicopter to land, making way for...

This lady, Lieutenant Rip Van Winkle. I should point out that in the pages leading up to her boarding the Eagle, she was singing Engelandlied, a German war anthem from World War I. She’s nutty, is the idea.

So, I’m gonna go ahead and put forth my fan theory that all the bad guys we dealt with prior to Rip were just patsies for Millennium, and not actual members in their own right. This includes Tubalcain “Dandyman” Alahambra, because, for all his powers, no one ever said his rank, leading me to think he didn’t have one. Same with the Valentine Brothers and any of the vampires Alucard and Seras were sent to fight during the first dozen or so chapters of this manga. Millennium may have turned them into vampires, and in some cases they even let them in on Millennium’s inner workings, but they were never more than cannon fodder. Jan seemed to understand this, although Luke and Dandyman seemed to believe they were genuinely created to represent the new pinnacle of vampiric power. Even the Doctor thought Dandyman had a strong chance of beating Alucard, but in the end they were just experiments meant to test Alucard’s mettle.

And, really, the rest of Millennium is not much different, except Rip and the others actually know why they’re being sacrificed, even if they don’t necessarily understand how or when.

Meanwhile, Seras still won’t drink blood, and she keeps trying to eat regular food instead, even though she struggles to swallow every bite. I’ve never been very clear on whether vampires in Hellsing can eat non-blood food or not. Seras is doing it, albeit painfully, but I don’t think she really gains anything from it, except whatever coping mechanism this is supposed to serve.

So in walks Sir Integra, who dumps a bag of medical blood on her table. Seras never really answers Integra’s question, but she already told Walter, and it’s not much of an answer. The heart of the matter is this: Seras really doesn’t want to be a vampire. Or, maybe, more accurately, she doesn’t want to stop being human. The trouble is that she already lost that battle way back in Chapter 1.

In many ways, Seras has accepted her fate. She works for Hellsing, recognizes Alucard as her vampire master, and so on. I think she understands that this is the only life she can have now, and her will to live is strong enough that she appreciates what Alucard and Integra have done for her. At her core, Seras is a public servant, and fighting monsters for Hellsing is not so different from fighting crime as a policewoman. I think she sees her current condition as a means to that end. She doesn’t crave power like the evil vampires we’ve seen thus far. Seras views her abilities as a means to an end. Alucard biting her gave her a way to stay alive and continue fighting the good fight.

However, she doesn’t want the baggage that goes along with that. She wants to retain as much of her humanity as she can, and drinking blood is the one thing that she has some control over, or so she believes.

But Integra’s far too practical for that dilemma. Alucard was willing to respect Seras’ relucatance, but she needs her troops on their toes and ready for action. So she takes a knife and cuts open her finger, and then orders Seras to lick the blood off. This is... disturbingly sexual, and one of a number of scenes that reminds me that Hirano Kouta had done a lot of, er, adult comics before Hellsing. I think he did a lot of uniform fetishy stuff too, which is why Seras and Schrödinger’s uniforms look so similar to each other. Both are meant to resemble German WWII gear. I’m willing to grant some leeway here, because there’s probably only so many ways to do a finger-licking scene like this without sexualizing it a little, but the last bit with the saliva trail is just revolting.

So, what’s bugged me for a long time was that if Seras drank (a little) of Integra’s blood here, why did this subplot not get paid off until much later in the story? She drank blood, didn’t she? Well, yeah, but Integra ordered her to do it, so it doesn’t count. This came up a couple of times earlier in the story, when Walter and Al mentioned that she wouldn’t drink blood willingly. It’s not just an ethical issue for Seras, or she’d simply chow down on the medical blood. I guess Integra could force feed her every night, but that wouldn’t solve anything. This is about Seras accepting her transformation as a fait accompli. I think this is why she very nearly drank Alucard’s blood back in Northern Ireland, when it sure looked like there was no other way for her to survive. But if she’s just sitting there with no one making her do it, and no urgent need to do it, she’ll refuse every time.

I think Hellsing uses the premise that a vampire has to do more than just bite a human to turn them into a vampire. That is, Alucard had to put his own blood in Seras’ body to complete that transformation. I think that’s how it worked in the Dracula novel, and Seras herself mentions it in the Gonzoverse anime. But that wouldn’t count either, because it’s part of the change itself. The idea is for the new vampire to partake in blood-drinking by choice, and until that happens, they won’t get all the cool powers.

One other thing, Integra takes this opportunity to mention that she’s a virgin, which is a weird flex for this situation, but okay. In Hellsing, that means Integra could become a vampire herself, but not if Seras bites her, because it has to be a vampire of the opposite sex. In any case, Tegs warns Seras not to bite down during this creepy finger-licking KFC-hentai thing.

Back in the damn ocean, Lt. Rip van Winkle is welcomed aboard by the traitorous crew of the Eagle. She asks them how it feels to be a vampire, and causally reminds them of their treachery. Then she gives them new orders, which are to die by her magic gun, which fires a bullet that can turn around in midair.

And so the First Officer and his lackeys learn the same lesson as the Brazillians working for the Dandyman, and the Dandyman himself, and the Valentine Brothers and whoever else. Millennium might turn you into a vampire, but that hardly means that you’ll live forever. Millennium always demands treason as payment for their help, and it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that they might betray you sooner or later.

Besides, Rip doesn’t need the British crew, because she has her own henchman on board her chopper. While she waits for them to wake up, she paints a swastika on the deck, just to make it clear that they’ve taken control of the Eagle, which she renames the Adler. That’s German for “Eagle”, you see.

Back on his blimp, the Major cuts this twenty-minute promo which basically amounts to “I love war, we have no particular agenda except to wage endless war for the fun of it.” Back in England, Alucard is eagerly awaiting their arrival.

I feel like I just made a whole post about my Halloween summons, but then they went and gave us another weekend of free tenfolds, and we have some datamines now about the next event, so I have a whole new batch of things to talk about lmao.

I’m just gonna put it under a cut like usual.

First off, I managed to get Halloween Maritimus [and my third copy of Halloween Mym lmao] off of the second batch of free weekend tenfolds, so yeah I’m just gonna call it quits on this banner now that Halloween Elly is the only one I don’t have from it. She’s the one I’m least interested, and I have a feeling the next banner will be a lot more tempting.

We also got datamine stuff about how the next event is going to be an Accursed Archives rerun, along with a new story event that goes along with it in some way. On the one hand I’d be more interested in getting the two water facilities I missed out on than the shadow one, but on the other hand Curran and Heinwald are some of my absolute faves and I’ve always regretted joining the game after their event had ended, so this will be fun. And this also seems like a really nice way to do new story events. It kinda feels like after the Valentines one they’ve had no real idea how exactly they want to go about doing any new ones, so hopefully this’ll set a precedent going forward.

I don’t think any of the datamine stuff specifically says anything about what the new banner will be, but at the moment my guess is that, even though this is a shadow facility event, it’ll be a light element banner. Or at least a partially light banner. The Stirring Shadows event synopsis page thing has a more yellow tone to it, and it literally references ‘The King in Yellow’, so it feels like it’s pointing more toward a light element banner. And we just got a new set of Halloween units who weren’t useful at all in the Halloween event itself, so it wouldn’t be too odd to get another set of units that don’t match the event they’re released along with, lol. [Also we just got the Fractured Futures banner earlier this month, whereas our last light element banner was two months ago, so there’s that]

My current guess for who’ll be on the new banner is that we’ll get Lathna, a new Lovecraftian dragon, and alts for Curran and Heinwald, since those will probably be the characters most prominent in the new story event. It’s also worth noting that [even though this doesn’t exactly prove anything about the new banner units] we also got datamined voice files for three new stickers based on Curran, Heinwald, and Lathna, which we’ll probably get as event rewards. And right when this new event drops they’re going to also update Nyarly’s kit a bit, which now makes me think that the new banner dragon might have the same sort of kit as him. Like how they buffed skill damage dragons right before releasing Siren.

Lathna and some kinda Lovecraftian dragon seem almost certain to me, but Curran and Heinwald alts would be a bit more up in the air. If we don’t get them, we might just randomly get Leif as a light version of Patia, but I’d be a lot more interested in getting Curran and Heinwald alts.

I’m assuming it’ll probably be a light banner, but it could be a shadow banner to fit the event better, but in that case I wouldn’t want to get Curran and Heinwald alts if they’re the same elements as their regular forms.

At least if it’s a light banner, I think the new dragon will basically just be a light version of Nyarly, for better or worse, and for the banner units, I could see us either getting Lathna as a 5-star and two 4-star alts for Curran and Heinwald, or two 5-star alts for Curran and Heinwald, and Lathna as a 4-star. I’m not sure which I’d prefer. But since I’m biased i’d like for any Curran and Heinwald alts to be as good as possible so i’d prefer it if they were 5-stars, even if it made them harder to summon, lol.

Either way, I think Lathna would be a light wand if she’s a 4-star, or a light dagger if she’s a 5-star. I could pretty easily see her as basically being the light version of Noelle, at least. Which light probably needs a lot at this point. And I could see her having a more supportive/defensive playstyle all around if the new banner dragon is the same as Nyarly, especially since the event print with Lathna on it is about shields and an HP regen that happens when you drop below 30% HP.

For Curran and Heinwald, I’d like for both of them to swich to a different weapon type for any alts they get, but I could totally see Curran getting a 5-star curse res light axe alt [in which case rip in pieces Summer Luca lmao]. I’d be happier if he got a 5-star curse-res light dagger or blade alt. I could go for either one, but a blade would probably be more useful overall. I know that Yachiyo is meta for HZD, but I feel like she’s mostly just an OK unit who people use because the only 5-star light blade at the moment isn’t any better than her, so getting a really good light blade unit would be nice. At least Fleur is genuinely really powerful now that they’ve changed how afflictions work.

Considering that light is basically drowning in staff units, I’d be a bit let down if we got a light staff Heinwald alt. I think a light wand alt would work nicely. He’s already more offensively-oriented than most healers as it is, so it’d be a natural change. It might be weird if both he and Lathna are light wands, but it wouldn’t be the first time we’ve gotten a banner like that, and if Heinwald gets a DPS-focused light wand alt while Lathna is more supportive, they’d at least serve different roles.

The only other options I can think of for banner units other than them would, as I said, be Leif as a light sword unit with the same sort of kit as Patia. But he’d feel really out of place.

This would also be the best time to give Curran and Heinwald alts to begin with. It’d feel a bit sad to give only one or the other of them an alt and not both since they’re pretty much a matched pair, so giving them both alts at the same time in a banner themed around their event rerun would be cool.

We still really need a light element skill damage dragon, but the upcoming change to Nyarly’s skills make me think that won’t be what the next banner will give us.

I know at this point I should start saving for the next gala, but Curran and Heinwald alts would be way more tempting to me, lol.

Also, in Dragalia Lost liveblogging news, after getting a few HMS clears with H-Lowen, I managed to get a few HMC clears with Noelle. On paper I’m probably ready for eHMC since I have a MUB Freyja and whatnot, but I’m gonna just stick to standard HDTs for now.

In general HMC wasn’t as difficult as I thought it’d be, but it feels a lot more punishing towards mistakes than HMS. It’s one of those fights where I really wish I could zoom the game out more since it can be hard to keep HMC in frame all the time while still staying outside of her attack range. But overall I feel like I have the pattern down.

I don’t even think I want to attempt any of the other HDTs just yet, though, even though I have the right sort of units for them. They all seem way harder and more demanding.

I think I said this in the last post I made, but they really need to have standard HDTs drop the materials for making HDT weapons, even if it’s at a lower rate to the eHDT material drops. The whole key-in-a-locked-box set-up going on with them at the moment is really off-putting and makes eHDTs feel impenetrable. It should be more like how you get the materials for HDT bane weapons from doing void battles, not from doing HDTs themselves. In general, making the barrier of entry into eHDTs way less steep would go a long way toward fixing the issues with it.

So since I’ve officially finished the liveblog, here’s a long (and incomplete) list of things I love about this book:

How sweet Edmond is to his father and how much they love each other

Renée and Gérard’s relationship. I really wish Dumas had developed it more

Gérard and Noirtier’s love/hate relationship + the shenanigans

The subtle, funny jokes that don’t make you laugh out loud but that make the journey throughout the book even better

Dumas randomly commenting on various things (Italian food, French society...)

Dumas getting mistaken over the dates of historical events. Why did nobody correct him??

Dumas’ incredibly realistic dialogues where people literally repeat the same three or four words over and over. I feel like these parts are just unsubtle fuck you’s to his publishers (he was paid by the line and not by the word, unlike his buddy Vicky Hugo)

Dantès totally believable excuses.

Albert adoring his mom

Franz and Countess G. being nerd buddies who talk about ghosts and dead people under moonlight
