It had taken time to bake, but Sparrow wanted to properly thank the King for the delicious strawberry treats. While he'd hoped to deliver his return gift personally, a guard had said Artorius was not to be disturbed.
Very well.
Instead, Sparrow left the boxed cake with the guard to deliver when the King was ready for it. Inside the simple package was a lemon cake with a merengue frosting and simply decorated with sugar-sculpted renditions of roses. Sparrow plucked a feather to deliver with the cake as his calling card.
A simple thank you. That's all it was.
Nothing more...
the smell of fresh lemon hit his nose - felt like lightning but welcoming . . . it was not hard at all to try & detect what it was , his senses still needed time to truly be there , but lemon was s t r o n g . . . following up with that smelled like meringue , oh dear aether his favorite . . .
he wondered where it was coming from , going through the halls as he tried to relax from the previous days' buildups , before he had spotted it just at the corner of his eye . . . a beautiful looking box , sitting all on it's lonesome. the guard that left it there gave the king a small smile before leaving it with him.
with nothing else to do , that was when he opened it & to his surprise was a gorgeous lemon-meringue cake , with beautiful sugar roses. oh dear aether who spent so much of their time making this , especially for him - after all he has so many chefs that cook for him & he would not feel right knowing someone burned through all their energy to get this recipe right -
. . .
ah.
oh - it all made sense now.
a burning heat blazed through his chest , causing what felt like a throbbing headache . . . his anchor beats fast & he finds the blush coming back to his face , thanks to the glow on the cake . . . a shaking hand reaches for the calling card , the feather , keeping it close to his chest & right where his anchor sat . . . oh sparrow , taking the time out of his day for a delicious treat , right around valentine's day too . . . ?
he stares down at the cake , fighting back a small smile.
what would he give for sparrow to be so happy ?

velvet has both good and bad memories about valentine’s day.
the good memories are about how much her parents loved each other. they often ate chocolate flavored apple snacks, and always showered each other with princessia and tons of presents! couples from aball were no different, the village was very lively, full of love and laughters.
sadly, that changed a bit after her parent’s death. there were no more smiles and sweet words filling the crowe’s house, even if celica did her best to shower her siblings with love. again, this day held a new meaning thanks to celica and artorius romance. artorius never missed an opportunity to surprise celica with unexpected gifts, be flowers, clothes, and trinkets from his travellings. with celica at his side, he was the happiest man in the world.
velvet was used to gossiping with niko, asking her how her love life was going on. they often spoke about the boys in town, or how marvelous it would be to be whisked away by a knight in shining armor!
the bad memories begin after celica’s death.
artorius never got over his wife’s death. neither velvet and laphi. new valentine’s days were barely something to be delighted with, if only to be remembered that the love of your life is no more at your side.
and to rub salt in the wound, there’s the constant reminder that velvet’s crush would never, ever be requited. that’s why she’s jealous of niko’s crush, which seems to be a requited one. velvet is jealous and envious about couples’ happiness. she’s her sister’s shadow but she’ll never replace her. and unlike the other girls, velvet was always the tomboy big sister too busy with her family issues, never having some free time to do what she truly want outside of her obligations. she never had the chance/opportunity to meet someone able to save her from aball, the village of longing. from the prison that was her house.
velvet feels now indifferent from valentine’s day and its celebration, if only bitter about how wrong her feelings were, are, and how impossible it would be for her to partake in the festivities.

Ask the king to be your valentine!!
Sparrow startles at the suggestion, his wings fluffing of their own accord as he thinks of the royal spirit. Of that flowing golden hair, the calm that emanated from the king at every turn...the obvious disdain for the holiday he had so very clearly conveyed to everyone.
"No. King Artorius has made it clear what his stance is on today. I see no reason to ask him to do anything today he doesn't want to." Though Sparrow could feel the strain manifest in his locket...he wanted to ask, but...no, no. He would respect the King's stance.

Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder (Velvet/Eleanor)
Eleanor took a steadying breath, clutching the card tighter to her chest. You can do this, she told herself. One more breath, then she gave one tiny rap to the inn’s door with her knuckle.
“Eleanor is that you?” came Velvet’s voice in her rare soft tone that always made Eleanor’s heart flutter. “Come in, silly. It’s your room, too.”
When she opened the door she was somehow unsurprised to see Laphicet sitting on her bed across from the other woman. (He was one of the few things that brought that soft tone out of her, after all).
“Hi, Eleanor,” the malak said, beaming at her. Then he crooked his head to the side. “What’s that you’re holding?”
“Oh, this?” She tried to play innocent but she could feel a flush rising in her cheeks. “It’s for Velvet, but I can give it to her later.”
“Why wait? Phi and I were just talking.”
“I’d, uh, prefer to give it to you in private.”
She raised an eyebrow at her. “Hm. Now I must know what it is.”
Laphicet sent her a curious stare. “Can’t I stay? I want to know what it is, too.”
Eleanor sighed. “I guess it’s fine. I doubt I could hide it from you for long as your vessel, after all.” She bowed, extending the card out to her. “Happy Valentine’s Day.”
Velvet’s face remained stoic as she read the card. Finally, she lowered it and met her eyes. “This better not be a joke.”
“I would never!”
“Then,” she said with a smirk, “I accept.”
“Accept what?” Laphicet asked.
“To become her girlfriend.”
“My what?” Eleanor could hardly breathe.
“Aren’t Valentine’s gifts a proposal? Celica always said accepting a gift was an agreement for courtship. You also wrote right here that you like me very much.”
“Well, yes, I did, but…I never imagined you would return the sentiment.”
“Because revenge is all that matters to me?” Velvet scoffed. “I’ve never dated anyone before. It is yet another thing Artorius took from me.”
The look on her face was so hard now, Eleanor bit back any other quibbles. “Alright, we shall we girlfriends then.” She tried yet failed to sound confident as her heart bounded in her chest.
Suddenly Laphicet was clapping and bouncing a tiny bit on the bed. “Congratulations, you two.”
“Thanks,” Eleanor nearly whispered, fiddling with one of her ponytails.
“Now we just need to find you a nice, cute little girl.”
“Velvet!” he exclaimed, embarrassment written on his face.
“Hey, Phi.”
Laphicet turned at the sound of his nickname. “Yes, Velvet?”
“I would like to know if you know of anything troubling Eleanor.”
“Troubling her?” he asked with a tilt of his head.
“Yes. We’ve been dating for a couple weeks now, but we’re hardly any closer than before. It feels like there’s a wall between us.”
“Well…” He trailed off in thought for a moment before he made an affirmative noise. “Oh, she told me before that she’s self-conscious of her body. Do you think that could be it?”
“Why would she feel self-conscious? She’s so pretty. Men ask her out in every town we visit.”
“She has a scar.”
Velvet sucked in a breath, voice coming out harsher than she meant it to. “Thank you for the information.”
Eleanor continued to stare at her reflection. Pretty face, silky hair, smooth skin, all marred by one grotesque imperfection. She almost wished she were ugly so that it didn’t have to be her personal secret. So that people didn’t assume she was beautiful. Touching at the jagged scar line, she lamented that she wasn’t even beautiful on the inside. It was her fault Kamoana’s mother was dead. Why the girl now believed herself too ugly to ever love. Why her own mother was dead while she paid with only this one scar as a constant reminder of her own helplessness.
She didn’t mean to cry, but before she knew it there were already tears in her eyes. A knock sounded at the door, but she made no move to answer it.
“Eleanor!” Velvet called, and Eleanor gave a tiny sob. She didn’t want Velvet to know how ugly she really was. She didn’t want her to turn her eyes away in disgust. Yet this thought kept her staring acutely at the scar’s image in the mirror with disdain rather than righting her clothes to shield it.
“Eleanor, I’m coming in!” Before Eleanor had time to even grasp the hem of her lowered slip, Velvet burst through the door. As soon as her eyes took in the sight before her, she slammed the door shut with a thud, locked it behind herself, and gave the former exorcist an icy glare. With pounding footsteps, she came intimidatingly close. “What were you thinking? Why are you crying?”
“About my mother.” About you she didn’t say.
“The scar is from when you lost her.” It was more statement than question, but Eleanor was compelled to reply nonetheless.
“From when she died protecting my pitiful self, yes.”
Velvet took her bare shoulders in hand, face staring intently at hers. “You aren’t pitiful.”
“Yes, I am,” she sobbed with a shake of her head. “I followed the Abbey for years without ever realizing the horrible things they were planning. I let Kamoana’s mother be killed, and worse, I confessed to you.”
Velvet wiped at her tear stained cheeks. “I’m happy you confessed to me.”
“But I’m not the beautiful person you think I am.”
“Yes, you are.”
Eleanor opened her mouth to protest, but before she could, Velvet’s mouth was on hers. It was her first kiss, so she had no idea what she was suppose to do in response, and her emotional state didn’t help any. In the end, she let her hands find Velvet’s upper arms, and just clung to her in near stillness, feeling her tears slowly recede.
When Velvet pulled back it was with a smile Eleanor had never seen before. It was gentle, but not the same sort of gentle she showed Laphicet. Her lips pulled up further and a spark shown in her eyes. “You joined the Abbey because you wanted to help people. You understand Kamoana’s pain and are trying your best to protect and make it up to her. And you confessed to me because you wanted to let me know there was more to life than seeking vengeance. You are the most beautiful person I know.”
“Velvet.” Her voice shook. “Still, the scar…”
Velvet took a step back, eyes roaming her exposed torso, and Eleanor shivered slightly remembering that her breasts were exposed along with the scar.
“Beautiful,” she murmured in near reverence.
“But how? How can you say that?”
“We all have scars, imperfections.” To highlight her point, she shifted into therion mode. Her deamon hand shimmered with an otherworldly red gleam and the claws appeared to twitch in hunger even in stillness. Eleanor couldn’t help staring at it transfixed. “None of us choose them. What matters is what we decide to do afterward.” Closing her eyes, she shifted back.
As soon as she did, Eleanor took her once-again human hand, entwining their fingers. “Thank you, Velvet. I feel better now. Truly.”
“Good,” Velvet said, bringing her free hand up to trace her index finger along the scar’s raised flesh. It sent a little tickle down Eleanor’s torso. “Because you really are beautiful, you know. Inside and out.”
Eleanor almost cried again. Almost. Instead, she allowed herself to shudder under her touch before joining their lips together again, this time experimenting with her lips. Velvet’s finger continued tracing up and down her exposed chest, deviating from the scar somewhat, and eventually Eleanor couldn’t take it anymore, gasping against the other woman’s mouth. As soon as she did, a tongue was pressing against hers, and her mind went blank. All thoughts of her appearance vanished, all thought entirely vanished. All that was left was Velvet’s finger tracing little patterns across her skin, Velvet’s tongue so foreign in her mouth, and Velvet, Velvet, Velvet.
She had no idea how long they kissed, but it felt like either one infinitely extended minute, or infinity made all-too soon finite. Whichever was longer, which her mind currently could not decide on. She must have been scrunching her face up in thought on the matter, for Velvet laughed in a velvety tone, one she had never heard before but instantly fell in love with.
“You’re so cute like that.”
“Yeah?” Eleanor asked with a high, light tone. “Well, your laugh is absolutely lovely.”
Velvet laughed a bit louder now. “I’m glad. It feels nice to laugh again.”
Eleanor grinned. “Then, I’m glad I could make you laugh.”
She returned a sincere smile. “And I’m glad I could make you feel beautiful.”
“And I’m glad,” Eleanor, gave her own light chuckle at repeating her words like it was a competition, “that you agreed to become my girlfriend.”
“I think we can both be thankful for that,” she said before kissing her once more.

what are the synopses for ur novels so far? including ones u havent started, if u want to share c:
omg i would love to share!!! aaa i’ve been wanting to talk about my novels again for so long. i’ll try not to make this /too/ lengthy tho!
my overall main novel is “lost paradise”, which features the duo of protagonists, leo pendragon and alexander frost, as they embark on an adventure to collect and preserve the keys to paradise (a land ruled by the seraphim, who possess otherworldly power and thus, greedy humans have tried to steal their power for their own which would lead to certain chaos. therefore, leo was entrusted to protect paradise’s power.) from an organization known as “elysium”. they are also on a quest to unearth the whereabouts of their childhood friend, matthew, who is also the prince of the kingdom but had disappeared after the assassination of the emperor a decade prior to the story. there will be 2 books for lost paradise, in which the second takes place after a 3 year time-skip and the plot gets VERY complex. man. i could go on about lost paradise for hours. it means so much to me. also leo & alex are really gay.
my second novel is known as “monochrome”, which centers around the idea of a corrupt government, and in this case, is called the “forsaken order”; soldiers who act on the name of justice and protection of mankind, yet would willingly use others (such as the sorcerers, who are basically turned into mindless, obedient puppets by them) to accomplish their goals. nina hallewell is the main protagonist, a sorceress who escaped from the facility where they manipulate her kin and destroy their emotions. she was taken in by a group who rebelled against the kingdom, who goes under the disguise of a traveling circus known as “monchrome”, to correspond with the novel’s title. however, a year before the main story, her adoptive brother, lucien, as well as the rest of the cirus were seized by the forsaken order and taken to a prison where they await death’s row for their actions against the kingdom. thus, nina begins a journey to save her family as well as stop the forsaken order as a whole. best part about this novel? wlw. magic wlw.
my third novel is the one i recently came up with, known as “butterflies”, which resolves around the idea of the gods spreading their power across the land in the form of fragments, and select a candidate for “king”, someone to harvest their power. however, only those worthy have a chance of uncovering all of the fragments, which leads us to our pair or protagonists, edmund and oscar, an engaged couple. edmund is a huntsman who’s job is to free the public from the danger of “daemons”, which are primarly based on creatures from english folklore. meanwhile, oscar is a member of the “knights of the round table”, (based on lancelot), but was framed for the murder of their leader, artorius (based on king arthur) and thus, had to flee from the capital along with edmund. afterwards, they’re wrapped up in the business of the competition to collect the gods’ fragments, which edmund covinces they partake in so they can finally establish a peaceful life for themselves. after all, with such power, anyone can achieve anything. basically it’s lots of references to arthurian lengend and english folklore in general!
i have another novel known as “the one chosen by the stars”, which is based on norse mythology and starrs a nonbinary protagonist named asleif, but im still working out the plot so i’ll try to talk about it more on a later date! all i can tell you is that they fight dragons in it and it’s pretty fuckin rad.
i also have a prequel to lost paradise known as “light”, which features leo’s ancestor, lucas valdez, but it would give away MAJOR plot points for lost paradise. i’m also developing a sequel for “the one chosen by the stars”, which doesn’t feature any romance BUT has a heartwarming, sibling bond between the two protagonists, valentine and celosia.
if you have any questions regarding my novels, hmu!!! i adore talking about them and sharing them with you guys! i’m hoping for all of these to hit bookstore shelves one day!
