Volkswagen Passat 2020 Variant, Facelift, Price
Volkswagen Passat 2020 Variant, Facelift, Price
Volkswagen Passat 2020 Variant, Facelift, Price – Within the territory of the greater-horse probable modifying point of view and good athletic design, the Volkswagen Passat has by no means obtained a home. No matter whether it entirely was unveiled from the 70’s as being a superb seeking hatchback, it entirely was not really an auto you created a visual appeal to in the event you preferred…

2020 Hyundai Elantra
Tumblr media
Rental cars are so great- it’s like getting to sidestep your daily driver for a car mistress, or car gigolo. Not that I have any desire to do such a thing, as I’m in a perfectly healthy relationship with an older Volkswagen. But she needed a few days off, and with this virus business I didn’t wanna Uber, so a rental it would have to be. Wanting to save money to put towards the Jetta’s possible costly maintenance, I first checked Turo, which was crazy cheap, but all they had available were a bunch of 2012 Fiat 500s. Fun fact- when my Honda got stolen in 2012 I tried to rent a car from a company through my insurance- all they had available was a then brand new Fiat 500, but they couldn’t let me rent it they said, because it kept breaking down on them. Back in 2012. So no thanks on the same car eight year later. I moved on to Enterprise, and I decided to go with the lowest-priced deal possible, which promised a Mitsubishi Mirage or similar. I’m furloughed at the moment, so this thing would just have to get me home from and then back to my mechanic’s. I could deal with an economy car just for that.
The plan was to meet the rental agent at the repair shop where I was leaving my car, sign some stuff, and then take off in the Mirage or similar. Wanting to socially isolate as much as possible, I decided to wait in my car until the rental agent and the employee who was driving them back to their office both showed up. First, I saw a brand new Hyundai Elantra with out of state plates and a barcode on the windshield pull into a spot. I figured that was the shuttle back, so I got out of my car, figuring my rental was right behind the Hyundai. And sure enough, moments later a Chevy Sonic pulled up. A Sonic is similar to a Mirage, right? I immediately noticed that the Sonic was absolutely filthy and kinda dented up, which, whatever, I’m renting from the bottom shelf, but also that the driver was an elderly man with no face mask. Huh. Well, okay. “Is that mine?” I cheerfully asked the man, who looked back at me completely bewildered. “No” he said gruffly, and then started taking some boxes out of his back seat. Oh man, should I have upgraded to Compact or Standard? Could Economy really be this bad? But just then- “Excuse me, sir?”, I heard from the direction of the Hyundai, “I’m with Enterprise! We have your car right over here!” It turns out they upgraded me two full vehicle classes- score! So the Elantra was mine, the rental agent’s shuttle was a Chrysler Pacifica that rolled up a few minutes later, and that dirty Sonic was a parts delivery guy. Oops.
Even though I have a perfectly valid credit card and a perfectly legitimate checking account, when I signed the Enterprise agent’s iPad iFelt like Preston in Blank Check pulling off one of his many bullshit “Mr. Macintosh” transactions. Like, handing over a piece of plastic and scribbling incoherently with my finger on a tablet screen = unlimited access to a brand new motor vehicle? Whaaaat? But it seriously was that easy! Plus, COVID-19 precautions meant my agent just straight up left the keys in the ignition with the car running- one less point of contagion. He was super nice though, and wiped down everything before leaving the car to me. Of course, I pretended that we were both criminals and he was cleaning his fingerprints off a getaway car before handing it over to me for disposal. I also kept thinking about the rental car scene in the awesome buddy-comedy My Fellow Americans in which a little Hyundai is used as a punchline-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Spoiler alert- things go really, really well with the Lexus-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jesus, what was it with abusing rental cars in 80′s and 90′s comedies? The poor things got less than no respect.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Insane that twenty-four years later, the two brands really aren’t a whole lot different anymore. Side by side, my brand new Elantra and a Lexus IS don’t even look particularly dissimilar from one another, save for the latter one’s more pronounced gaping O face. Even with a more staid design, the Hyundai certainly doesn’t at all appear notably goofier or cheaper in comparison.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once inside, the Elantra seemed like a nice enough place. I went to grab a CD out of the Jetta (Yes, like a grandpa I still listen to compact discs in the car, don’t judge) and then realized upon closer inspection that the Elantra didn’t even have a CD slot. Since I couldn’t understand the deal with the satellite radio- it seemed to me like the previous renter had only activated five stations, and they were all Catholic talk radio stations- I just defaulted to my favorite local FM channel. Whenever I’ve been given a rental car in the past, I compulsively have to see how loud the volume on the stereo will go before it starts hurting my ears. And I’m happy to report that the Elantra was capable of boosting “High” by The Cure to an acceptably window-shaking volume. With that important business out of the way, I could see what else was up with this car. It had a sportshift kinda gear box, I guess Hyundai’s is called SHIFTRONIC®.
Tumblr media
I messed around with it, it seemed responsive. Downshifts really did slow the car considerably, and upshifts seemed to make it go faster, but I don’t know, my foot was also on the gas, so maybe it was just a placebo effect? Either way, I’m a big fan of manumatics- it’s always good to look down and see the little S and the plus/minus. It’s a welcome bonus touch, like when a deli sandwich comes with a pickle. Even if you’re never going to want or use that pickle, it’s just nice someone made the effort.
Tumblr media
Next, I needed to push this “Drive Mode” button and see what that did. Sadly, hitting it did not cause toothpicks to dispense from the sun visor and “Nightcall” by Kavinsky to boom over the sound system, lame. But, instead, it pulled up this dope TRON-esque graphic of the Elantra on the touch screen-
Tumblr media
I just love it when digital renderings of cars appear on their dash screens. Second only to visual equalizers, they’re my favorite completely unnecessary yet supremely cool thing that a display can offer me. The fun cartoon in the Elantra explained that I had the choice of three modes- Smart, Normal and Sport. The Catholic talk radio renter had been driving it in Normal, no surprise there. I was on the highway at this point, so I decided to get crazy and punch it into Sport. And believe it or not, it made a huge difference! I once drove a Mini Cooper S with a manual, and while Elantra Sport Mode certainly wasn’t that vivacious, it was much, much more fun than Elantra Normal or Elantra Smart. Okay, full disclosure- I didn’t even bother to check out Elantra Smart- I spent too many years driving a Prius to care to see what the “nerd setting” felt like- I can imagine vividly, thanks.
It wasn’t until I arrived home that I even bothered to see what the key situation was. Like I said, they were theoretically in it, as the engine was on, but not until pulling up near my house did I think to make sure that they were actually in the car. They were though, dangling from an ignition cylinder the way car keys are supposed to. I myself hate proximity fobs, push starts and such- they make me feel too disconnected. I have too many years of the muscle memory of my fingers gripping a physical car key, turning it, and feeling the vibration of the engine starting to ever get used to anything else. To me, that sensation also turns a key in my brain, and once that’s turned, it is like “Okay, we’re operating a car now, pay attention”. Without that ritual, I can’t focus on my driving quite the same way. I would imagine it would be similarly disorienting if suddenly all cigarettes just came magically lit right out of the pack, long time smokers would say “What the hell? I enjoy the act of flicking my Zippo, that’s part of the whole thing!” You know? Lucky for me, the Hyundai had keys-keys, albeit surprisingly budget looking ones-
Tumblr media
My friend’s mom had a 2004 Elantra that he’d borrow and I’m fairly certain the keys for that thing looked almost identical. A quick Google search proved me right.
Tumblr media
C’mon Hyundai! This thing was a two-thousand and twenty! And it wasn’t even the base model. Not even a switchblade? Or a buttons-built-into-the-top-of-the-key type deal? Nope. Key and separate fob, 1995 style. Oh well. Since I’m on furlough at the moment, I didn’t really have anywhere I needed to go, so I just left the Hyundai to sit until the Jetta was ready. When I got word that the VW was all put back together, I headed back into the countryside in the Elantra.
Tumblr media
Enhance! It’s hard to tell, but that’s a genuine Passat W8 all-wheel-drive wagon in front of me.
Tumblr media
When I got closer, I noticed that it was full of yard work equipment, and getting pretty beat looking. Sitting behind it at a red light, I noticed the two young guys in it were rocking out to music. It was warm out that day, so since we both had our windows down I could immediately recognize Kid Rock’s “Cowboy” slapping through the Passat’s Monsoon speakers. The two guys nodded along with it enthusiastically for a few moments before starting to laugh and changing tracks on either a mix CD or a Spotify playlist or whatever. Ohhhh, they were rocking out to it ironically. The plot thickened. If it was a mix CD, were they driving a borrowed car and laughing at someone’s taste, as my friends and I did when we commandeered a dad’s Lincoln LS and found “Danger Zone by Kenny Loggins deep within the trunk mounted CD changer? Or were they a couple of Gen Zs cycling archaeologically through a Woodstock ‘99 playlist on a streaming device of some sort? I’ll never know. Anyway, bawitda-back to my story about the Elantra. I had to put a bank-busting $3.12 worth of gas into it so that it would have a full tank before dumping the keys into my mechanic’s after hours slot and happily reclaiming the Jetta. Not that there was anything wrong with the Elantra- as has been stated endlessly elsewhere, it’s truly amazing how far Hyundai has come over the last twenty or so years. I guess the rental company wasn’t as enthusiastic about the little car’s innovations or maybe they were just used to them, as I got a call from my mechanic a few days later telling me it still hadn’t been picked up. I called the rental people who assured me they would be coming to grab it, they had just been busy. Since my mechanic has plenty of land, and since my credit card had stopped being charged, I left the situation at that. I’ve heard nothing further, so for all I know the car either got collected or it’s still just sitting out there in the fields, now in use as the nicest chicken coop in all of the Amish Country. If that’s the case, those chickens are in for a real treat! Hopefully they’ll have more luck figuring out the satellite radio than I did.

2021 Volkswagen Arteon First Look: Yep, VW Updated It After One Year
Given that the new Volkswagen Arteon first went on sale in the U.S. last April as a sort of late replacement for the discontinued CC sedan, now might seem a bit early for a face-lift. But in Europe, the swoopy hatch-sedan has been on sale since in this form since 2017, so there, the VW is due for a mid-cycle refresh, which we’re therefore getting, too. Meet the updated 2021 Volkswagen Arteon, which includes a handful of enhancements inside and out, which could be construed as bad news for Americans who bought the first-year 2020 model and good news for anyone who hasn’t yet pulled the trigger on one.
2021 Volkswagen Arteon vs. 2020 Arteon: What’s New?
On the outside, the 2021 Arteon’s changes are subtle. The four-door hatch gets a new lower valance design and grille, which can now be specified with a thin LED light bar that stretches between the accent lighting signature of the headlights.
In back, the 2021 VW Arteon wears VW’s recently redesigned emblem and new “Arteon” badging across its liftgate. Several other visual distinctions help separate the trim levels, which have been reduced to three for the U.S. market. Additionally, three new exterior colors join the palette for 2021: Oryx White, Kings Red Metallic, and Lapiz Blue.
Fresh Interior Swag
The cabin is where the Arteon really ups its game. Volkswagen says the entire dashboard panel, including HVAC vents, surfaces, and trim details, has been redesigned—again, surprising one year in to the car’s life here in the U.S., and still so when you consider most mid-cycle refreshes (as applies to the Euro model) don’t involve chopping up a car’s interior.
A new center stack with revised air conditioning controls and an upgraded MIB 3 touchscreen infotainment interface that now supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity joins the fancier dash. Materials have been made more upscale with new leather, fabrics, and leatherette (faux leather), plus aluminum trim borrowed from the Touareg flagship SUV, which is no longer sold here.
But, perhaps the Arteon’s best party trick is its available 30-color LED ambient lighting feature that extends to the door panel trim. It’s a unique touch that definitely adds to the premium feel of the cabin. Another feature that makes the Arteon feel more upmarket—both in comparison to the dowdier U.S.-market Passat and other mid-size sedans—is its 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit gauge cluster, which is now standard across the range. For audiophiles, a new 700-watt, 12-speaker Harman Kardon stereo system is available.
2021 Volkswagen Arteon: Same Engine, More Safety
Though Europe gets a new plug-in hybrid drivetrain, engine and transmission options carry over from last year in the U.S. market. That means the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon’s sole drivetrain choice will continue to be a turbocharged 2.0-liter TSI four-cylinder good for 268 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque.
Buyers get one transmission choice, an eight-speed automatic transmission. SE models are front-wheel-drive only, while SEL R-Line come standard with FWD but have the option of adding VW’s 4Motion all-wheel drive system. The range-topping SEL Premium R-Line is AWD only.
For 2021, the Arteon gets more standard safety features. Now included at no extra cost is Blind Spot Detection, Rear-Traffic Alert, and Front Assist automated emergency braking. Starting with the SEL R-Line, Lane Assist lane departure mitigation becomes standard. Combined with stop-and-go adaptive cruise control, that feature forms a suite VW calls Travel Assist, which is intended to aid the driver on long drives.
Wait, What About the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon Shooting Brake?
Sadly, as much as we’d love to have an Arteon wagon on our shores—such a thing exists!—the business case just isn’t there for VW. With its extra pillar and longer roofline, the shooting brake offers more rear headroom and cargo space, though VW has yet to release full volume specs on the wagon model.
The refreshed 2021 Volkswagen Arteon is set to go on sale in late October, but pricing has not been announced yet. To maintain the gap between the Volkswagen and Audi brands, however, VW says to expect a roughly 10-percent lower base price compared to the similarly sized Audi A5 Sportback. That should also keep the Arteon firmly in entry-luxury price territory, where it indirectly combats the Acura TLX, Buick Regal Sportback, Kia Stinger, and the Lexus ES.

Mon but?
(Photo Infiniti)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh!

2020 Volkswagen Passat Interior, Exterior, Price, Redesign
New Post has been published on https://www.vwcartrend.com/2020-volkswagen-passat-interior-exterior-price-redesign/
2020 Volkswagen Passat Interior, Exterior, Price, Redesign
2020 Volkswagen Passat Interior, Exterior, Price, Redesign – Passat’s sixth technology, tagged B8 was only launched last year, and Volkswagen’s mid-size car will not be altered in after that couple of years. Diesel models in Europe are quite a regular point. Not giving diesel engine on the “old continent” can be considered blasphemy. But German manufacturer pressures their viewpoint and present their prized TDI models in the suggests as nicely. That’s why the 2020 Volkswagen Passat is this sort of famous car.
2020 Volkswagen Passat Exterior
As with all next-gen sedan that arrived of Volkswagen’s production line, 2020 Volkswagen Passat characteristics a brand design with rectangular a few-stripe grille and angular front lights in the beginning, and adequately formed rear end as nicely. There are no abnormal design motions everywhere close to it. Passat is down-to-world and straightforward making it attractive to the vision, but some may find this plainness unpleasant, to say the very least. Labelled as large family members car, Passat is preferably a large inside of. It offers a large rear seating which could comfortably seat three grown-ups, let alone kids, and trunk area space is above par as well.
2020 Volkswagen Passat Exterior
2020 Volkswagen Passat Interior
Interior refinement doesn’t slip in behind possibly. Base models provide leatherette upholstery, but there’s usually the option to improve to total leather-based seating with SEL Premium models. The f training course, there are lots a lot more things that are included with these improvements, like larger tires on the outside and SD memory card visitor, push-switch commence and sophisticated connections choices on the inside.
2020 Volkswagen Passat Interior
Finally, the top-rated class brings 30 Gigabyte hard disk, double-region automatic weather conditions control with plant pollen filter and rear person ventilation and a great deal much more. As for security solutions, 2020 Volkswagen Passat incorporates a rearview camera, blind-spot tracks and vehicle parking sensors among other choices, and your touchscreen show will begin giving you the navigation directions.
2020 Volkswagen Passat Engine
The truth is, 2020 Volkswagen Passat Nice and clean Diesel is the only mid-size sedan with this particular type of powertrain in the U.S. This, 2.0L turbo diesel 4-tube can supply 150 horsepower and 236 lb-ft . of torque. Western models, on the other hand, are primarily based upon diesel powertrains and are presented with a range of units which period from 1.6 to 2.0-litres in displacement and from 120 to 240 horses in power. Rear to the U.S. model, nonetheless. Much like its Western brothers and sisters, Clear Diesel model offers 6-speed manual transmission which however again suggests VW’s vision to combine European criteria into, relatively obstinate U.S. market.

2020 Volkswagen Passat Release Date And Price
The found-your your bones Passat has got an excellent Manufacturer’s Described Retail store Price (MSRP) relating to about $23,000 incorporating the $850 spot demand you. We recommend starting as a minimum at the centre of the-period R-Set model, which could get you far more popular merchandise for a very little not as much as $26,000. SE selections release about $27,300, and in many cases, a human-made leather-based-clad SEL begins all-around $32,500. The best V6-driven Passat SEL is about $35,500.

Volkswagen Converts Zwickau Into Europe’s Biggest Electric Car Plant
Volkswagen Converts Zwickau Into Europe’s Biggest Electric Car Plant
Volkswagen’s Zwickau plant will no longer produce combustion-engine vehicles.  The last combustion-engine car to come out of the factory was the 2.0-liter Golf R wagon. Zwickau has served a number of automakers for over a century. Volkswagen took over the plant in 1990, producing 6,049,207 combustion-engine vehicles to date. These include models such as VW Golf, Polo, and Passat.

VW Passat 2020 review: 140TSI Business Wagon
VW Passat 2020 review: 140TSI Business Wagon
If you have a family you need a car with space, which can come in either an SUV or you can go for an old school wagon. Only wagons aren’t so old school anymore. They’ve been updated and modernised and come out looking like this Volkswagen Passat. It’s undeniably stylish and very functional, which is what we’re all after right now.

Motor News: 2019 North American International Auto Show Recap
The North American International Auto Show is always a special event for us here at Motorweek. But this year’s Detroit festivities are even more noteworthy, as this is the last time the show will be held in usually frigid January. It migrates to a warmer June time frame next year. But, before we get all nostalgic, let's see all of 20-19’s big reveals!
While most European automakers didn’t make the Detroit stop this year. The majority of domestic and import brands arrived at the 2019 North American International Auto Show with an extensive stream of all-new models that we just can’t wait to drive.
As always, the North American Car of the Year awards kicked things off. This year’s NACTOY honors going to the Genesis G70 for Car of the Year…
…the Ram 1500 for Truck of the Year…
…and the Hyundai Kona, including the Kona EV, for Utility of the Year.
Congratulations to all!
It was the Ford stand that really get our adrenaline pumping. As if descending from performance-car heaven…the all-new Mustang Shelby GT500. 700+ horsepower from a 5.2–liter supercharged V8 mated to a 7-speed DCT; no manual for now! While that may be heresy, with a 0-60 in the low 3s, this Shelby is going to kick some serious butt on the drag strip, along with road course dominance thanks to a magnetic suspension, loads of rubber crammed into the wheel wells, and Brembo brakes.  Carroll Shelby would definitely approve!
Ford had one for the family street scene as well…the all-new, three-row, 2020 Explorer SUV. Sharing the Lincoln Aviator’s chassis, it returns to a rear-wheel-drive architecture for better towing, with all-wheel-drive an option.
Targeting a wide swath of buyers, the all-new Explorer will be available as a Hybrid, as a high-performance 400 horsepower ST, and even as a Police Interceptor Utility.
Crosstown rival General Motors focused on providing families with three row crossover luxury in the new Cadillac XT6. It’s a more car-like option to the still truck framed Escalade. Sharing basics with the GMC Acadia, a 310-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 and 9-speed automatic transmission make up the XT6 powertrain.
The big news at Fiat-Chrysler, was big trucks, with an all-new Ram Heavy Duty. Yes, it does have 1,000 lb-ft. of torque, with its available high output 6.7-liter I6 Cummins Diesel; and double-yes, it will out-power, out-tow…35,000 pounds worth…and out-haul all other pickups. The Ram Power Wagon returns too, here with an updated 6.4-liter HEMI gas V8.
Debuts from imports start with a car…the new Volkswagen Passat.  Most of its Tennessee-built underpinnings and drive gear remain the same, but the sleek new sheet-metal is a major departure, and we like where it’s headed.
Perhaps even bigger news, was Volkswagen’s announcement of major expansion of the Chattanooga plant for upcoming EV models. With VW’s new Ford technology alliance, we might even see some future Blue Oval EVs made there.
Toyota officially unveiled the worst kept secret in car-dom, the all-new Supra, the first production car developed by Toyota’s GAZOO racing team. There’s still an inline-6 under the hood, only now it comes from Bavaria, as Supra shares a lot of its engineering with the BMW Z4.  That turbocharged mill cranks 335-horsepower, and will shuttle lucky owners to 60 in just over four seconds.
Toyota sprinkled some of their performance dust on the Lexus RC F as well, with a new Track Edition; boasting 472-horsepower from its 5.0-liter V8 plus speed focused aero tricks and weight removal galore.
Subaru’s STI tuner arm rewarded their most ardent fans with the special edition STI S209, the first S-line performance car sold in America. It sports road-rally style chassis updates, a wide-body design, and a 341-horsepower 2.5-liter turbo boxer engine.
Yes, the biggest Kia ever, the 3-row Telluride crossover utility is finally a reality. Sharing chassis with the Hyundai Palisade, it’s brawny body has room for 8, with plenty of V6 power to haul them, and their gear, to whatever active lifestyle stuff they get into.
Speaking of cousin Hyundai, they debuted the Elantra GT N Line. It launches a new series that fits between their full N brand performance cars, and everyday models.  Confusion to follow.
This year’s Detroit show included more eye-popping concepts than usual. After showing a longer range Leaf e+ at CES, this Nissan IMs EV concept may predict a sleek electric sport sedan joining the mix.
Nissan’s Infiniti could be the next brand to unleash a full-EV SUV; and that could be just the beginning. This concept, the QX Inspiration, rides on an all-new platform that will be the basis for a wide range of electrified offerings.
Technically, this Lexus LC Convertible is a concept, but it looks ready for prime time to us.  It also looks like a no-brainer; and would easily be the car to be seen in on the streets in Southern California and South Florida.
We’re told this crossover concept is a clear sign of what’s coming as GM transitions Cadillac to their lead electric vehicle brand.  Now, we didn’t actually see the vehicle, just these pictures, with no specific details, but Cadillac says stay tuned!
We’ve seen this diesel-powered Mahindra Roxor Jeep-lookalike for some time now; and as you might imagine, FCA has issues with the design, and has taken the brand to court.  But for now, it’s off-highway use only for this little runabout; making it the perfect mashup of an old CJ and a new Side-by-Side.
And it wouldn’t be a proper Detroit show without a Chinese car company saying U.S. sales are imminent. This year we have a 5-time return player as GAC Motor was back with its ENTRANZE EV concept, as well as production previews of several models including the GM6 minivan and the GS5 compact SUV.
And that’s it for the 2019 North American International Auto Show. We’ll be back in summer of 2020 for more from Motown!

Don’t Shrug: Six Things You Should Know About the Volkswagen Atlas Line
Volkswagen would have been one of the headliners at the 2018 New York International Auto Show with only the Atlas Cross Sport to unveil. But the story goes that VW brass were so taken with their design staff’s proposal for a pickup truck, that they added it as a surprise premiere at the brand’s press conference.
Though both Atlas family models are presented as concepts, there already are production plans for the VW Atlas Cross Sport. It will be added to VW Passat and Atlas production in the Chattanooga, Tennessee assembly plant in late 2019, which would make it a 2020 model. The VW Atlas Tanoak concept is not quite so far along. It’s a design study so far; Volkswagen will gauge public and press reaction, and will study sales projections and public clinic results and other data before the pickup gets the green light.
Volkswagen of America chief Hinrich J. Woebcken says both concepts are designed to be part of the company’s “Atlas Family.” Here’s how that young family is coming along, so far…
1. The Atlas Family fit into an MQB puzzle to fill capacity in a big factory. VW’s seven-year-old Chattanooga plant is set up to build a variety of models in the VW Group’s MQB architecture, which is a very flexible platform that will account for the largest share of the Group’s future products. The U.S.-spec VW Passat is not on MQB yet, but the next generation, expected in the 2020 model year, will be. The big three-row Atlas SUV is on MQB as well, as are the Golf, Jetta, and Tiguan. But the Chattanooga assembly plant’s capacity is 500,000, so there’s space for more than Atlas, Atlas Cross Sport, and Passat. Chattanooga also can build vehicles based on VW Group’s all-electric MEB platform, though that requires installation of a separate assembly line.
2. The VW Atlas Tanoak would stretch MQB to its limits. The Tanoak’s overall length of 214.1 inches would be MQB’s longest, by far. The pickup truck’s wheelbase is 11 inches longer than the Atlas, at 128.3 inches. It’s 79.9-inches wide and 72.6-inches tall. Some car and SUV factories do not have paint booths that can handle tall vehicles over a certain height, but VW says that’s not a problem for Chattanooga.
3. Tanoak’s slick concept truck features are production-ready, says the design chief. Surprise-and-delight features include the moveable cargo rail, a sort of large basket-handle that slides from inside the rear window frame toward the back of the bed, looking like a thin Dodge Daytona Charger-style rear wing. There’s also a compartment that opens in the rear bulkhead to make room for items too long for the 64.1-inch long bed, and wild geometric LED lights outside, and a horizontal LED line surrounding the front passenger compartment inside. All of this is producible, design chief Klaus Bischoff says—it’s a matter of how much he can get the production engineers to approve.
4. But what about the Atlas Cross Sport? That’s already on. The Atlas Cross Sport will ride on the same 117.3-inch wheelbase. The overall length is 7.5-inches shorter, at 190.8 inches. All of that comes out of the rear overhang, where the Atlas’ third row would be. With the new Tiguan filling the popular compact SUV slot in the VW lineup, the two-row Cross Sport is to the Atlas three-row what the Ford Edge is to the Explorer, or what the Nissan Murano is to the Pathfinder. But while VW says the Cross Sport will be priced at, or just below, the Atlas, younger buyers and empty nesters tend to load up the options and spend more on a two-row midsize than most families spend on a three-row midsize SUV.
5. Atlas engine lineups. That’s lineups, plural, because each Atlas Family model has something different. The VW Atlas three-row comes with your choice of 2.0-liter turbo I-4, or the venerable 3.6-liter VR6 V-6. VW showed the Atlas Cross Sport with a 3.6-liter V-6 plug-in hybrid with a 1.8-killowatt hour lithium-ion battery, and the company said a mild hybrid also would be added to the powertrain lineup; a hint that maybe the VR6 is about to get a 48-volt system. Though there was no mention of the 2.0-liter turbo, it’s hard to imagine it would be offered in the bigger three-row, and not in the Cross Sport. The Atlas Tanoak is said to have a 276-horsepower V-6, with eight-speed automatic and 4Motion all-wheel-drive. It seems unlikely it wouldn’t get a VR6 with 48 volts, and maybe a PHEV, though a 2.0-liter with front-wheel-drive might be more of a stretch.
6. And a prediction … Considering current U.S. Passat sales levels of about 60,000 per year, Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport sales might push total capacity utilization just past the halfway mark of 250,000. It will take far more than a large-midsize unibody pickup truck to make the rest. MEB production there can’t make up the difference, unless the U.S. and more likely California push up their electric vehicle incentives, or a large portion of the mainstream consuming public goes green, gasoline prices spike upward, or all of these happen. Chattanooga could become a large assembly plant of relatively niche models, which seems appropriate for Volkswagen. So I’ll make this future product prediction, with no backing from any VW insiders so far: The upcoming MQB Passat spawns an Alltrak-style wagon.
