O Tiguan 2015 foi o SUV mais “popular” da Volkswagen até a chegada do T-Cross, revelando como a marca alemã estava atrasada no segmento de SUVs, tendo apenas o Touareg como a outra opção, posicionado mais acima.
Lançado em 2008, o SUV da Volkswagen foi o segundo modelo do segmento que a marca alemã emplacou, sendo o Touareg o primeiro. Surgiu na época em que a empresa ainda se apoiava completamente no VW Golf e no VW Passat.
Feito sobre a plataforma PQ46 do segundo citado, o Tiguan poderia ter sido feito sobre a PQ35 do Golf V e VI, mas a VW estranhamente optou pela plataforma maior, que sustentava seus maiores carros na época, com exceção de Touareg e Phaeton.
Mesmo com uma base de carro grande, ele ficou no segmento médio, medindo assim 4,42 m de comprimento, 1,80 m de largura, 1,66 m de altura e 2,60 m de entre-eixos, ostentando 505 litros no porta-malas.
Tendo suspensão traseira multilink, o utilitário esportivo também tinha tração permanente nas quatro rodas, mas com motor e câmbio em transversal, assim como Passat, Variant e CC.
Com estrutura bem sólida, o Volkswagen Tiguan foi projetado para suportar severas condições, mas com bom desempenho. Como SUV ainda era coisa de rico no Brasil, com exceção do Ford EcoSport, a marca trouxe o topo de linha.
Equipado com motor EA888 2.0 TSI de 200 cavalos, o Tiguan se apresentou em 2008 com transmissão DSG, que tem dupla embreagem e seis marchas, além de tração nas quatro rodas.
Com o Chevrolet Captiva como seu principal rival, o Tiguan não teve a mesma penetração que o SUV da GM, visto que este era feito no México e chegada com isenção de imposto de importação, enquanto o VW vinha de Wolfsburg.
Dessa forma, além de ser mais competitivo, o Captiva trouxe ainda motorização 2.4 para reforçar a posição que tinha com o V6 3.6, que mais tarde foi trocado por um V6 3.0. O Tiguan só veio a ter um motor EA211 1.4 TSI de 150 cavalos na linha 2017, quando já não era fabricado na matriz, mas em Ösnabruck, antiga fábrica da Karmann.
Essa versão era a Comfortline e tinha tração dianteira, além de câmbio automatizado de dupla embreagem DSG de 7 marchas. Nos EUA, esse modelo era vendido como Tiguan Limited, uma vez que a nova geração já estava em produção.
Assim, diante do Chevrolet Captiva e outros, a VW contava com potência e torque disponíveis com uso de turbo e injeção direta de combustível, tendo ainda um câmbio bem mais rápido que os automáticos comuns.
No Tiguan 2013, o pacote era da versão Highline, que durante anos foi a única opção disponível, contava com inúmeros equipamentos, indo desde bancos em couro até teto solar panorâmico, passando por multimídia com navegador GPS.
Bancos elétricos, estacionamento automático (Park Assist), controle de cruzeiro, faróis bi-xenon, sensores de estacionamento, entre outros. Tendo um trim de primeira qualidade, o Tiguan 2013 tinha também muitos opcionais.
O visual já havia sido retocado profundamente no facelift, que tirou seu estilo inspirado em um momento de início de Das Auto, quando ostentava linhas arredondadas nos faróis e lanternas, algo que mudou com a atualização.
Nela, sua inspiração veio do Passat e ganhou luzes diurnas em LED pela primeira vez, mas manteve o interior que, interessantemente lembra muito o da picape média Amarok.
Com difusores de ar duplos, instrumentação de carro esportivo e multimídia destacada, o Tiguan sempre foi um carro bem premium, muito próximo de um Audi em sua concepção, embora não tenha relação com o Audi Q3.
Este último era derivado do Golf e A3 através da plataforma PQ35, tanto que era até mais largo que o Tiguan, apesar do mesmo entre-eixos. É importante frisar que o Audi Q5 já tinha a modular MLB em 2008 ante os demais PQ.
Sendo um produto de alta tecnologia e qualidade, o VW Tiguan 2015 tinha um preço elevado, fato que contribuiu negativamente para suas vendas. Além disso, foi produzido no Vietnã e na China, essa pela SAIC-VW.
Lá, ele foi feito sem um equivalente da FAW e sua produção cessou apenas em 2020. O Tiguan poderia ter sido feito no México ou Brasil, mas a VW permitiu que a Audi fizesse o Q3 e o primeiro MQB em terras brasileiras, o Audi A3 Sedan.
Enquanto aqui ostentava apenas motor 2.0 TSI de 200 cavalos, na Europa ele começava no 1.4 TSI de 122 ou 150 cavalos, passando pelo 1.8 TSI de 160 cavalos, além do 2.0 TSI com 170 ou 200 cavalos.
Ganhou ainda o polêmico EA189 2.0 TDI diesel com 110, 140 ou 180 cavalos, sendo que estes dois últimos motores são usados pela Amarok fabricada na Argentina. Com exceção do 1.8 TSI da família EA888, os demais estiveram aqui na Audi.
Mas, o Tiguan explorou o máximo com desempenho muito bom, indo de 0 a 100 km/h em 8,5 segundos e com máxima acima de 200 km/h. Trazia ainda a inovação do DSG com mudanças mais rápidas que um piloto profissional no manual.
Imponente, o SUV médio da VW quase teve um companheiro nacional, pois, a filial local projetou um utilitário esportivo baseado no Fox, mas que não foi aprovado pela matriz e acabou inspirando o Kia Soul, através do chefe do projeto.
Assim, o Tiguan 2015 permaneceu como a única opção mais “acessível”, que tinha preço de R$ 116.000 na linha 2013, chegando a mais de R$ 120 mil com aumento e reajustes.
Não por acaso, o valor é bem próximo do que custava o Jeep Compass há bem pouco tempo, quando partia de R$ 111 mil, tendo mesmo porte. O sucessor do Tiguan foi o Allspace, muito maior e para sete pessoas, feito em Puebla, México.
Com plataforma MQB-A2, uma variação mais longa da A1 empregada no Golf, esse SUV é fabricado também na China. Ainda assim, a posição do Tiguan antigo só será preenchida pelo Taos em 2021.
O SUV será fabricado em General Pacheco e tem design diferente, sendo um pouco maior em comprimento e entre-eixos, mas usando o mesmo motor 1.4 TSI de 150 cavalos do Tiguan Comfortline 2017, mas flex e com a caixa Tiptronic.

O Tiguan 2015 já se apresentava com visual renovado e trazia um layout frontal com faróis de xênon com luzes de curva e dotados de luzes diurnas em LED (14 cada), assim como grade retangular com frisos duplos cromados.
O para-choque tinha grade central com frisos horizontais e molduras laterais envolventes, além de faróis de neblina circulares e cromados. A parte inferior do para-choque é protegida por acabamento preto.
Nas laterais, o Tiguan emprega frisos cromados nas janelas, assim como nos frisos laterais, tendo ainda maçanetas e retrovisores na cor do carro, sendo que os primeiros eram rebatíveis eletricamente e tinham repetidores de direção.
No teto, barras longitudinais cromadas e teto solar panorâmico. Já as rodas de liga leve aro 17 polegadas com pneus 235/55 R17, mas opcionalmente havia rodas aro 18 polegadas com acabamento diferenciado. Havia antena barbatana.
Já a traseira contava com lanternas em LED cortadas pela grande tampa do bagageiro, que trazia uma vigia ampla e dotada de limpador e lavador, além de para-choque com suporte de placa sob a tampa, tendo acabamento na cor do carro.
Com a parte inferior em preto e dotada de refletores, o protetor tinha ainda escape duplo cromado, reforçando a proposta de desempenho do Tiguan. Por dentro, o ambiente fazia jus à proposta do SUV da VW.
O painel chamava atenção pelos difusores de ar circulares duplicados em suas posições, passando das normalmente quatro para oito saídas de ar, além de acabamento soft na cobertura e apliques em cinza.
Com cluster analógico, o Tiguan tinha conta-giros, velocímetro, nível de combustível e temperatura da água, além de computador de bordo em display digital central.
A multimídia tinha tela sensível ao toque, mas também apresentava botões físicos, tendo CD player, MP3, USB, SD Card, Bluetooth, câmera de ré, entre outros. O ar condicionado Climatronic era dual zone e apresentava saídas no banco de trás.
Com botão de partida metálico, o Tiguan 2015 tinha ainda seletor da transmissão DSG com o mesmo acabamento, empregado recentemente nos Gol e Voyage automáticos. Com freio de estacionamento eletrônico, trazia o Auto Hold.
Já o porta-luvas era bom em espaço e contava com iluminação, além de resfriamento. Nas portas, o Tiguan tinha puxadores e molduras curvados, onde ficavam os comandos dos vidros elétricos e retrovisores.
No teto, o SUV da Volkswagen trazia alças, teto solar panorâmico (opcional), retrovisor interno eletrocrômico, para-sois com espelhos iluminados e luzes de leitura dianteiras e traseiras. O volante multifuncional em couro tinha paddle shifts.
A coluna de direção era ajustável em altura e profundidade, sendo que o SUV tinha sistema de assistência eletro-mecânica e controle de cruzeiro. O Tiguan contava ainda com sistema de som dotado de oito alto-falantes.
Confortáveis, os assentos eram revestidos em tecido, mas havia os pacotes de opcionais que ofereciam de couro Vienna à Alcantara, em tonalidades cinza, bege, marrom e preto.
Apesar desse acabamento, os bancos dianteiros não tinham ajustes elétricos. Atrás, o VW Tiguan tinha mesinhas retráteis nos encostos dos bancos dianteiros, além de banco bipartido com apoio de braço dotado de porta-copos.
Os cintos de 3 pontos eram completos, assim como os apoios de cabeça e havia Isofix/Top Tether. Já o porta-malas com 470 litros tinha um bom espaço, além de fixadores para bagagem e estepe horizontal. Havia ainda iluminação.

O Tiguan 2015 usava o motor EA888 que é o sucessor do antigo EA113 e de sua variação original, o EA827. É o atual propulsor usado pelo grupo Volkswagen com quatro cilindros e 2.0 litros, mas também teve uma versão 1.8 litro.
Trata-se de um projeto bem-sucedido da Volkswagen que o adicionou em vários modelos do grupo, embora seja notória a lista de defeitos e problemas técnicos registrados na internet mundial.
Vazamentos de bomba d’água e alto consumo de óleo na primeira geração do EA888, o que obriga à retificação, foram registrados em outros países, assim como desgaste prematuro do tensor da corrente de comando, diferente do EA113.
Apesar destes problemas, o EA888 se mostrou confiável o bastante para se impor como o segundo motor a gasolina mais difundido no portfólio da VW, com o EA211 sendo o primeiro.
Com quatro cilindros, o EA888 tem bloco de ferro fundido cinzento e desloca os mesmos 1.984 cm3 das gerações anteriores de propulsores da VW, assim como sua versão 1.8 TSI com 1.781 cm3. Seu desenvolvimento foi feito na Audi.
O cabeçote é de alumínio com duplo comando de válvulas variável e sistema de injeção estratificada de combustível (direta), embora tenha versões com dupla injeção, tendo também bicos de alimentação no coletor de admissão variável.
Com bobinas de ignição individuais, o motor 2.0 TSI tem alta capacidade de potência e torque, tanto que já foi provado alcançar 400 cavalos num conceito da VW, mas normalmente chegava a 310 cavalos. O Golf R 2021 terá 330 cavalos.
No Tiguan 2015, ele entregava 200 cavalos e 28,5 kgfm, obtidos a 5.100 rpm e 1.800 rpm. Esta é uma herança do EA113, que New Beetle 2.0 8V aspirado tinha seu torque máximo em apenas 2.250 rpm e potência em torno de 5.000 rpm.
Com muita força em baixa, esse EA888 ainda era da primeira geração, sendo que a segunda alcançou um nível superior com 211 cavalos com o mesmo torque, enquanto a terceira passou para 220 cavalos e 35,7 kgfm.
Esse propulsor do Tiguan 2013 era bem elástico e garantia força total numa faixa de rotação muito plana. Para funcionar plenamente, equipado com a transmissão automatizada de dupla embreagem DSG de seis marchas.
Esta caixa tinha discos a seco e apresentava modo Sport e trocas manuais na alavanca ou paddle shifts. O DSG foi um desenvolvimento original da Porsche, que criou o PDK, não sendo o mesmo dos demais. Na Audi, o DSG chama S tronic.
Com engates muito rápidos e suaves, usando dois eixos de engrenagem, o DSG permite que o carro seja mais rápido que o manual, assim como no PDK ou S tronic. Problemas relativos a superaquecimento, vibração e ruído geraram recall.
O Tiguan europeu chegou a ter o 1.8 TSI com 160 cavalos e 25,5 kgfm, além do EA211 1.4 TSI e do EA189 2.0 TDI diesel, entregando assim de 110 a 150 cavalos, chegando mesmo a ter transmissão automática de seis ou oito marchas.
Já o sistema de tração é da Haldex e utiliza um dispositivo de acoplamento multiviscoso que funciona como uma embreagem, distribuindo a força entre os eixos, sendo ligada por um cardã até o diferencial traseiro.
Este, preso à carroceria, distribuía a força para as rodas traseiras através de semieixos, variando a força de 50:50 até 70:30 ou 30:70, mas não há desligamento de tração da traseira, sendo o sistema sempre arrastado, mesmo sem torque.

But, perhaps the Arteon’s best party trick is its available 30-color LED ambient lighting feature that extends to the door panel trim. It’s a unique touch that definitely adds to the premium feel of the cabin. Another feature that makes the Arteon feel more upmarket—both in comparison to the dowdier U.S.-market Passat and other mid-size sedans—is its 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit gauge cluster, which is now standard across the range. For audiophiles, a new 700-watt, 12-speaker Harman Kardon stereo system is available.
2021 Volkswagen Arteon: Same Engine, More Safety
Though Europe gets a new plug-in hybrid drivetrain, engine and transmission options carry over from last year in the U.S. market. That means the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon’s sole drivetrain choice will continue to be a turbocharged 2.0-liter TSI four-cylinder good for 268 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque.

To maintain the gap between the Volkswagen and Audi brands, however, VW says to expect a roughly 10-percent lower base price compared to the similarly sized Audi A5 Sportback. That should also keep the Arteon firmly in entry-luxury price territory, where it indirectly combats the Acura TLX, Buick Regal Sportback, Kia Stinger, and the Lexus ES.

O Novo Golf GTI chega com motor EA888 mais potente, entregando 245 cavalos e 37,7 kgfm, além de câmbio manual de seis marchas ou dupla embreagem DSG, mas agora com sete velocidades.

With a slew of new models promised for next year and beyond, and with charging station infrastructure still being built out, the tipping point for electric autos is still in the future. But automakers are betting big on that future, and how quickly the industry takes off depends not just on choice but on a shift in customer expectations. Hurdles to a breakout include higher prices, the end of federal tax subsidies for some models and a paucity of charging stations — even though the industry argues that most charging will be done at home at night. That, especially, can be a deterrent given electric cars’ shorter range. Even so, as Mark Reuss, the General Motors president, recently wrote, “just as demand for gas mileage doesn’t go down when there are more gas stations, demand for better range won’t ease even as charging infrastructure improves.”That infrastructure is growing, nonetheless. More than 21,000 locations in the United States, with some 57,000 hookups, offer Level 2 charging, which can add maybe 20 miles of range per hour. These are fine for parking at the office or overnight, but useless on a road trip. For charging to roughly 80 percent of a battery’s capacity in about a half-hour, there are 3,300 DC Fast Charging locations with 12,000 charge points. Many of these are proprietary Tesla chargers, however.A traditional car, of course, can fill up at 168,000 gas stations across the country in the time it takes to buy a Slim Jim and a Coke.The evolution toward electrics has given carmakers freedom to play with design — picture Tesla’s jagged-edge pickup — while others are sticking with tried-and-true sedans and crossovers, simply swapping out the drivetrain. Here’s a look at some of the electric vehicles that are just reaching the market, will soon be available or are expected to arrive in 2021.Audi e-Tron Sportback: A four-door coupe version of the full-size Audi e-Tron sport utility vehicle, introduced last spring, the Sportback is expected to be available this spring. Its first version, a 332-horsepower all-wheel-drive model, will be available late 2020, with a 459-horsepower GT version expected 18 months from now.The biggest changes, beyond fuel, are inside. A new version of the much-criticized Ford Sync connect service will feature over-the-air updates. Artificial intelligence will monitor a user’s habits and suggest appropriate actions. For example, it may ask if you want to call your mother at a certain time if it notices you typically do that each day.Natural language comprehension will allow users to state commands in various ways, such as “Take me to Santa Monica” or “I want to go to Santa Monica.”Mileage will range from an expected 210 to 300 miles, depending on the model. In the “frunk,” or front trunk, the space usually occupied by an engine will offer space designed to hold ice for tailgating; a drain plug will be included.Mercedes EQC 400 4Matic: Originally expected to arrive in the States next year, the first purpose-built all-electric Mercedes will be delayed until 2021, the company recently announced. It blamed demand in Europe.The all-wheel-drive vehicle, starting around $70,000, will feature its screen-based MBUX infotainment system now used in a number of new Mercedes models. To optimize the vehicle’s range, the MBUX system can calculate the most power-efficient routes and direct drivers to high-speed charging stations. Time to charge to 80 percent will be about 40 minutes with the fastest chargers.Porsche Taycan 4S, Turbo and Turbo S: The “entry level” version of Porsche’s first electric vehicle, the 4S will be available this spring, starting at about $104,000. Review: The Improved 2020 Volkswagen Passat Is a Missed Opportunity
When Volkswagen decided to launch the significantly updated 2020 Passat near some of Southern California’s legendary driving roads, it raised a few eyebrows (both of mine). The Passat is no longer our first choice for a midsize sedan we’d hoon up a world-class road like Angeles Crest, but could this midcycle refresh change that?
The U.S.-spec 2020 Passat still rides on an old platform—unlike the Passats for the Chinese and European markets, which are now built on VW’s much newer MQB architecture that underpins the Golf (a MotorTrend favorite). So even though the Passat is refreshed for 2020, the body-in-white is essentially the same as the car that took home our Car of the Year honors in 2012. VW says this is to keep costs down because sedan sales are on the decline in the U.S., but as a result the Passat is hindered from start to finish.
For 2020, the bodywork is now a bit swoopier, with a reworked front-end design, new LED headlights, a fresh grille that ties it to the current Jetta, and a sculpted rear that makes the Passat a more handsome machine than before. The 2.0-liter turbo-four makes the same 174 hp but is up to 206 lb-ft of torque, and the six-speed automatic gets a new torque converter. Inside, the changes are even more subtle. But they shouldn’t have been. The gauge cluster in the U.S.-spec Passat hosts a teeny color display between an analog tach and speedometer—had VW made the move to the MQB platform, the Passat could have come with Volkswagen’s state-of-the-art fully digital instrument cluster, like in the Tiguan, but the sedan’s older platform won’t allow for it. The climate controls remain unchanged, as does the center console. Volkswagen did make blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic LED headlights features standard across all trim levels, however.
The 2020 Passat’s dashboard has been adapted to include some Arteon-esque air vents, and the infotainment display is new. At just 6.3 inches, the touchscreen is small for the segment—European Passats can be upgraded to an 8.0-inch display, something that isn’t possible in the North American car thanks to its dated platform. Desirable optional gear includes a Fender audio system, adaptive cruise control (standard on three of four trims), heated front and rear seats, and dual-zone climate control (also standard on three of four trims).
Unfortunately, a slightly modernized interior and extra niceties can’t hide the car’s obvious age inside. The dashboard and center console, though clean and easy to use, look positively spartan when compared to others in the segment. But how does the old sedan stack up on the road?
Realizing that the Passat might need some extra sportiness for our drive ahead, I jumped into a 2020 Passat R-Line. The R-Line adds slightly different front and rear bumpers, steering wheel–mounted paddle shifters, and stickier Falken rubber wrapped around R-Line-exclusive 19-inch wheels.
The new tires represent one of the biggest dynamic differences between this newish 2020 Passat and the old one. Whereas the last R-Line came with bigger wheels but tires that were no more grippy, the Falkens were much more up to the task of hustling the sedan up a twisty mountain road. Thanks to the paddles on the wheel, it was easy to stay in the desired gear, but the transmission regularly ignored me when I asked for a downshift. The steering is light yet accurate, but the brakes have almost no feel, and a dead spot at the top of the pedal’s travel makes coming to a well-judged stop extremely difficult.
Once we dropped out of the twisty roads above Los Angeles and onto its aging freeways, the old Passat came good. The 405 freeway’s pavement is notoriously noisy and craggy, but the Passat—even on its 19-inch alloys—soaked up the lumps and bumps with ease. It was quiet at speed, allowing so little wind and tire noise into the cabin that even whisper-volume conversations were audible. No squeaks or errant rattles made their way into the cabin as we thumped it over bumps and expansion joints. The Passat was easily as comfortable as its big brother, the Arteon, but with better body control over large undulations. The long and straight journey down the 405 suit the Passat. Fitting, as the U.S.-spec Passat has been built specifically for the American market since 2012, and long, straight journeys abound in the lower 48. I just can’t help but wonder how much better the Passat could have been when the going gets twisty if it were built on MQB. In the midsize sedan class, you can have your cake and eat it, too: the Accord, a two-time comparison winner, expertly handles the practical matters that matter to families while also being better to drive.
That said, the refreshed Passat is still spacious, quiet, and comfortable. It’s not going to set your hair on fire or inspire you to push for that next apex. What it should do is offer the same kinds of features as the Altima and Optima, but the omission of a heated steering wheel, ventilated front seats, a decently sized infotainment screen, and a surround-view camera system makes it less appealing. The 2020 Passat starts at $23,915, undercutting most of its competitors in base price—and it also boasts a four-year/50,000-mile basic warranty with two years/20,000 miles of free maintenance. Even so, the Passat doesn’t have enough optional cabin tech to satisfy those who appreciate such niceties, and it still isn’t as nimble as the class-leading Accord. A more feature-laden Passat with modern underpinnings does exist, just not in the U.S., and that’s what frustrates us about the U.S.-spec 2020 Passat. If you must have a roomy, comfortable, well-priced German sedan in your driveway and don’t mind skipping out on features many competitors offer, the Passat could have a home on your short list. Otherwise, consider a lower-trim Arteon, another midsize sedan, or wait a few years for the hoped-for full redesign of the Passat.
