Vague Terrain #19
Vague Terrain was originally an online journal edited by Greg J. Smith, Corina McDonald, and Neil Wiernik.
In 2011 Derek Holzer guest curated their 19th issue, titled Schematic as Scores: Uses and Abuses of the (In)Deterministic Possibilities of Sound Technology.
It featured text, images, audio and video from Jessica Rylan, Jason R. Butcher, Lesley Flanigan, Martin Howse, Moritz Ellerich, Loud Objects (Tristan Perich, Katie Shima, Kunal Gupta), Synchronator (Bas van Koolwijk and Gert-Jan Prins), and Peter Blasser, in addition to Holzer’s intro.
In the mid 2010′s Vague Terrain’s website was taken offline, and although part of the materials are on the wayback machine, it’s only a partial copy.
The collection is meaningful because it’s the first to explicitly investigate the potential of technical documentation as a musical medium. Of course, this idea has roots in previous artistic work and ensembles (e.g. David Tudor’s Composers Inside Electronics and all the subsequent / related artists like Gordon Mumma, Alvin Lucier, Paul De Marinis or Nic Collins), being grounded both in documentation of these practices (such as Nic and Alvins articles and books) and in various related discussions of music technology widely construed. Nevertheless, VT19 was the first collection to put together artists from different countries, artistic lineages, and scenes, under the banner of organized components rather than or in addition to organized sound. Nic Collins calls this “handmade electronic music,” an exploration of the “music implicit in technology” (2007), but it’s gone under various hacking / maker / diy monikers depending on context, which has made its reach / history a bit of a mess.
In a wider context, VT19 is significant because it displays people around the world using sound and music to make sense of commodity electronics, the underlying standards, global manufacturing / consumption chains, and their local context. To echo Alvin’s criticism of “circuit music,” (see his 1996 Leonardo article) there is something deeply flattening about every piece of electronic gadgetry being made using exactly the same (admittedly large) set of components, but there is nothing flat about the way that each of these artists present varied and personal takes on how assemblages of these components might serve as locations or catalysts for poetic expression.
VT19, in offering a sample of relevant practitioners leading up to 2011, also serves as a snapshot of Euro/American practices (reflecting the languages and locals of its originators). It displays both the correspondingly personal connections made to discuss the art and points to future areas of investigation so as to display the diversity of work and participants, before and after its publication. It hints at questions still only beginning to be answered in “academic scholarship” of the frictions and privileges inherent in being able to recycle electronics for art rather than for practical everyday tasks (see Lauren Flood’s chapter in Audible Infrastructure, itself reflecting a longer-standing critique of “DIY” as uncritical of its classist potential).
Anyways, I’ve recently had some luck trying to get the original materials back online and I’m excited to share more once this gets moving. I’ll update this post in the next few months when there’s something public to share.
