Was thinking a bit about how “The Devil’s Playhouse” has a lot more comedy than people make it out to be, and while especially thinking about “The Penal Zone” I realized this episode is actually very very very very gay. Like, I’m pretty sure it’s the Telltale episode with the highest amount of gay moments (205 is second on this list, what with Sam getting catcalled by a moleman, Max flirting with Mr. Reaperphone, the whole bachelor party, Peppers etc).
I think what I really like about those moments is that it’s a great example of normalization. The characters are incredibly casual about it, talking about gay relationships the exact same way one would talk about straight relationships, it’s really neat to see! Especially considering that this game was made in 2010, a whooping 5 years before gay marriage was legal in the whole US. It's crazy and great how much they were able to get away with!
(Screenshots of all these moments with timestamps (and quotes) under the cut. To have as little pics as possible, only a small section of each dialogue is taken. And to have a limit of two screenshots per pic max, some dialogues that are cut in two parts in-game have the second part pasted under the first. The timestamps puts you at the beginning of each conversation. All footage from NapalmX717 with the screenshots in chronological order of this video)
Max: “What can I say, Sam? Alien ships love to abduct me. It’s not my fault I look so probe-able.” (9:44)
Sam: “Nice work, little buddy! Make sure you wait three days to call, or he’ll thing you’re desperate.” (11:47)
Max: “Well, he IS pretty charismatic, Sam. And he’s from space, which is a plus. But you’re the only hairy, overweight, domineering control freak I need, Sam.” (20:38)
Sam: “I don’t need to go to another planet for a methane rich environment, as long as I’ve got you, pal.”
Max: “That’s really sweet and obvious, Sam.” (22:46)
Skun-ka’pe: “Perfect! Just the one I wanted to see ha ha ha ha!”
Sam: “Keep the hands where we can see ‘em, pal.” (23:36)
Max: “We could just give ourselves tongue-baths, like cats and flight attendants do!” (30:57)
Sam: “Why do we have jumper cables? Neither of us knows how to use them.”
Max: “It’s simple, Sam: the RED cable goes on the RIGHT nipple, the BLACK cable clamps to the…” (34:42)
Max: “Oh boy! Now I can finally set up my 24-hours adults-only naked bunny chat line.” (34:58)
Sam: “Toys...Toys… we must prepare… the toys….”
Max: “Well, that’s just a typical Friday night for YOU, Sam.” (36:45)
Flint Paper: “Oh. Well yeah, that could be it. I was thinking it was you, Sam!”
Max: “You think you know a guy. I’m not angry, Sam, just very disappointed.” (1:03:49)
(For context they’re talking about who might be Girl Stinky’s secret admirer)
Max: “I can’t lie to Flint Paper, Sam!” (1:05:20)
Max: “What kind of pretend mother would I be if I didn’t worry about our imaginary baby?” (1:10:31)
Momma Bosco: “Oh, it’s not all bad. I’m getting better at apparating. And now I don’t leave a trail of ectoplasmic slime behind every time I leave the room.”
Max: “That’s better than Sam can say.” (1:23:13)
Sam: “I’m not gonna rest until I find the guy who killed my partner!” (1:43:13)
Max: “Wow. I feel really very close to you now, Agent Superball.” (1:45:33)
Sam: “I don’t like the thought of you teleporting off without me, Max.” (1:46:33)
Max: “Sam, this is all so sudden! I… I don’t know what to say!” (2:07:10)
Sam: “I think one of us should try to smash through that window with his rock-hard, melon-sized head.”
Max: “And I think one of us should try the door, unless he wants to spend the rest of the day picking plate glass out of his partner’s fluffy white nether regions.” (2:17:00)
Girl Stinky: “Sam and Max? Don’t tell me Skun-ka’pe wants YOU guys to be his love slaves, too?” (2:24:48)
Girl Stinky: “Eww. He wishes. He’s SO not my type. You only have to date an evil gorilla once to learn never to make THAT mistake again.”
Max: “We’ve all been there, girlfriend.” (2:25:07)
Girl Stinky: “Gee, it sounds like YOU two should go out with him. Would you like me to give you guys some privacy?” (2:27:33)
Max: “You’re my best friend, Sam! I know you’d take a bullet for me!” (2:31:02)
Sam: “You keep coming up with creepy disaster scenarios that always end with you eating me, Max. It’s getting annoying.”
Max: “If you don’t like it, then stop looking so damn tasty.” (2:38:11)
Max: “Think of something quick, Sam. I don’t like the way he’s undressing me with his eyes.” (2:53:22)
#Sam and Max#samandmax#Freelance Husbands#The Devil's Playhouse#The Penal Zone#Flor talks#long post#guns cw#this has been sitting in my folders for AGES#on that note; I'm not getting back into sam and max; this is just something I meant to post forever ago#but got lazy about it due to having to put pics together and look for timestamps#(granted once the Devil's Playhouse remake come out I intend on playing all the games outside of vr#and make a compilation of Max being gay; not just through his relationship with Sam but other guys as well)#looking back at it now I'd actually argue some of those aren't exactly gay moments or are just random sex jokes#along with a few that only make sense in a broader context like Max not wanting to lie to Flint bc he has a crush on him#but also I already have all the screenshots from back then so might as well use them#btw my favorite ones are Max complimenting Skun-ka'pe early on bc it's hilarious to see him praise a villain like that#and the one with Sam wanting to throw Max through the shop's window due to how domestic the dialogue is#also when they talk with Flint and Max thinks Sam cheated on him with Stinky

The Scottish actor David McCallum was born on 19th September 1933.
Born as David Keith McCallum, Jr in Maryhill, Glasgow, the second of two sons of Dorothy Dorman, a cellist, and orchestral violinist David McCallum Sr. When he was three, his family moved to London for his father to play as concertmaster in the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Early in the Second World War, he was evacuated back to Scotland, where he lived with his mother at Gartocharn by Loch Lomond.
McCallum won a scholarship to University College School, a boys’ independent school in Hampstead, London, where, encouraged by his parents to prepare for a career in music, he played the oboe.In 1946 he began doing boy voices for the BBC radio repertory company. Also involved in local amateur drama, at age 17, he appeared as Oberon in an open-air production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream with the Play and Pageant Union. He left school at age 18 and was conscripted, joining the 3rd Battalion the Middlesex Regiment, which was seconded to the Royal West African Frontier Force. In March 1954 he was promoted to Lieutenant. After leaving the army he attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (also in London), where Joan Collins was a classmate.
David McCallum’s acting career has spanned six decades; however, these days he is best known for his starring role on the police procedural NCIS as medical examiner as Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard. I first really remember McCallum for his role in another US show, The Invisible Man which ran for 13 episodes in the 70’s. McCallum by then was a veteran of many TV and Film roles, starting in the 50’s including Our Mutual Friend and The Eustace Diamonds, in the 60’s he was in several ITV Playhouse shows before moving across the Atlantic to take roles in The Outer Limits and his big break as Illya Kuryakin in several incantations of The Man from Uncle.
His most notable films were The Greatest Story Ever Told as Judas Iscariot and of course Ashley-Pitt ‘Dispersal’ in The Great Escape.
As well as the aforementioned Invisible Man in the 70’s he took time to pop back over to our shores to star in two quality series, as Flt. Lt. Simon Carter in Colditz and Alan Breck Stewart in an adaption of Robert Louis Stevenson’s, Kidnapped.
The 80’s saw him team up with the lovely Joanna Lumley in Sapphire & Steel and several guest roles in the likes of The A Team, Hart to Hart and Murder, She Wrote as well as a one off reprise of Illya in the TV movie The Return of the Man from U.N.C.L.E.: The Fifteen Years Later Affair.
The 90’s saw David in Cluedo and Trainer on our TV screens over here and American science-fiction series VR-5 in the states..
During the last 20 years or so he has been in the kids TV show, Ben 10: Omniverse as the voice of Professor Paradox and of course Donald Horatio “Ducky” Mallard in a remarkable 436 episodes of the popular NCIS.
David has been married twice. He married his first wife Jill Ireland in 1957. They met on the set of the movie Hell Drivers. Together, they had two sons and a daughter, Paul, Jason and Valentine, with Jason being the only one who was adopted. In 1963, David introduced Jill to his co-star on The Great Escape, Charles Bronson, and she left David and married Charles in 1968. In 1967,
David McCallum passed away aged 90 on September 23rd last year, he is survived by his wife of 56 years, Katherine McCallum, his sons Paul McCallum, Valentine McCallum and Peter McCallum, his daughter Sophie McCallum and his eight grandchildren. NCIS paid tribute to him in an episode called The Stories We Leave Behind when the tagents find comfort in working on one of his unfinished cases. The episode features clips from several old shows.

As a fan of Sam and Max for, like, 15 years (Old!!! Old!!!!!!!), I remember trawling ye olde Telltale Games forums, ESPECIALLY when The Devil's Playhouse was being released (the month long wait between episodes was AGONIZING), and I remember the writers coming into the forums to answer questions abt the story.
I wonder if the Internet Archives is capable of finding those threads again, because there's a somewhat Important Piece Of Info about the outcome of TDP that was discussed in a dedicated thread.
SAM & MAX EPISODE 305 SPOILERS UNDER CUT OOO BOOGA BOOGA!!
Again, I do hope that the Internet Archive has proof of this because otherwise I have no source other than my memory/dude, trust me, BUT!!! There was a thread that the writers made after the fog of 305's release had settled and people had questions about timelines, continuity, and what Timeline Beta Max would know and not know upon arriving to Timeline Alpha to replace the now dead Alpha Max, etc etc. And due to the mindset of the writers/Mr. Purcell himself of 'everything and nothing is canon', the writers essentially 'confirmed' that every version of Max is connected via a hivemind of sorts. This was also a fun way for them to explain the odd imagery and apparitions in 'Max Vision'; all echoes from the memories of other Maxes. What ALSO correlates with this is dialogue in Poker Night at the Inventory. The first one. Going with the idea that Beta Max (har har) is the 'permanent fixture' Max in all games thereon; he STILL has a line when outed from the table of 'This hurts almost as bad as that time SOMEONE let Superball fire a giant missile into my chest'. Inferring that he remembers being Maxthulu and remembers dying. And yet, as stated before of the ultimate creed of any writers of Sam & Max 'everything and nothing is canon', it's unlikely that this is gonna be something touched on in any future projects (The VR game certainly didn't make any nods to the Telltale 'canon'), but it's fun to think about!!
#Sam and Max#i thought about those forums threads last night and my Autism™ got so fixated on it that i barely slept#and yet im only now typing it out

I will say they can do any new sam&max game and I would be happy (just not VR please) but i do think the best move they could possibly do is to finally make Plunge Through Space. The idea in it of itself is really fun and Steve has very recently (last year i believe) talked about how he still wants to make the game, but it also makes so much sense for this game to happen after the devil's playhouse, a game that establishes there is a lot going on outside of earth, a lot of mystery, a lot of bad guys. It just makes sense their next aventure happens on space (and not just in the moon this time)

Hi, same person as earlier, do you have any Sam and Max recommendations? I love their dynamic but the only media I’ve seen is their animated show and the vr game! I don’t really know any of the other games, so I’d love to hear if you know any of the other ones!
So as far as the og comics go, there was a collection of them published as a book called “Sam and max: surfing the highway” but unfortunately it’s a collector’s item and super expensive, so I’ve yet to get my hands on a copy.
as for the games, there was one made by lucasarts (Sam and max hit the road) which is a standalone game (I think there’s also a board game version of this?), and a few more made by telltale (save the world, beyond time and space, the devil’s playhouse + remasters) which are connected to each other. (I’m 90% sure all are available on steam)
they also feature in both poker night 1&2
there was also a shorter webcomic called the big sleep, which you can find online. I’m probably missing something, but that’s about it as far as I know.

so i just got into duel links (thanks to you) and now i have a thought bout the Lore as i'm scrolling through your DL tag
do you think kaiba learned how to code an eldritch abomination, or was he just making a silly VR game that an eldritch abomination found and proceeded to imbed itself in the core code?
AW honored to have gotten you into the Duel Links fray! Just a funny little yugioh mobile game :)
Anyway, tbqh I don't actually think it's either of those scenarios...? Duel Links may be dancing along the edge of the cosmic horror genre but it's pretty clear that there isn't some eldritch abomination lurking in the code, or any mysterious entities coded into the game by Kaiba (knowingly or otherwise.) The eldritch-adjacent horror the characters in the DL overworld are going through (especially the VRAINS guys) is stemming more from the fact Theyre Being Exposed to Worlds and People and a Vastness Beyond What They Ever Expected Could Be in This Digital Realm
If anything, the closest thing we could maybe even slightly approximate to an "eldritch abomination" is Duel Links itself, no outside force wriggling itself in required! Seto Kaiba set out to program a virtual world he could lord over and raise the dead within in the process, it's built on the back of people's memories, and it's tough to tell if even he's aware of the fact that this has expanded out far beyond the reaches of Duel Monsters. Hundreds of memories spurring on the creation of dozens of new AI copies, a spiraling, growing network of brainwaves, and the smattering of implied Real People walking the DL grounds are left to figure out how they got here and just how deep the rabbit hole goes and Hey while we're at it maybe speak to a long dead friend again.
The horror of the unknown and unknowable in Duel Links isn't tied to any particular abominable figurehead, it's just the consequences of one billionaire with emotional issues dabbling in digital necromancy and memory replication within his little virtual playhouse. Go figure!
#asks#ygo posting#duel links madness#anonymous#the horror in DL WISHES it could pin itself on some definable outside entity. nope it's just a computer system forcing the dead back to lif#from the memories of people just trying to enjoy playing a card game. <3 i love it sooooo much

I think I just had the most extensive FNAF segment in a dream of mine. It is also the most intriguing as well as maybe the most nonsensical.
There was a new game (I assume by Steel Wool? A new developer?) that had us play as William and Vanessa. It was in two stages: One that was a Mario Party/FNAF World 2-ish adventure and one that was reliant on VR and side-scrolling at different points. I fumbled William’s side (the first half), but did okay enough on the Vanessa’s side (the second half).
Vanessa’s side, by the way, had us impersonating Springtrap as we escaped some nightmare realm. The Daycare Attendant, using paper crafts, helped us keep up the facade. And the VR system tracked our movements during a minigame involving said teamwork.
The lore in the second half, I think, was that Vanessa was trying to help others escape from somewhere. It was her, a human version of Glamrock Freddy?, some guy with a balding haircut, and presumably Gregory. The thing is, they get re-captured and sent to… Chucky’s Playhouse? Like, the horror movie Chucky? Either Dream!Me switched to the wrong game or this FNAF franchise jumped the shark.
Oh, and William’s side of the lore is him trying to escape UCN. While trying to commandeer Captain Foxy’s ship. I’m guessing this is in the middle of the game somewhere as a side quest to get on Foxy’s good side. 🤷🏻♀️
If there is anything to use as a “prediction” for the actual FNAF lore, then the general premises of both ‘games’ could work. William tries to escape UCN in one while Vanessa tries to save everyone that’s trapped in another.

Hello! I started following for the MTL content but your Sam and Max content has enamoured me. Is there like a suggested place to start with their content? E.g. would you suggest starting with their comics or games? Thanks in advance.
sorry for spreading autism
Anyway! I don't think there's a "suggested" place to start, since there really isn't a story connecting the medias (minus little references in the games and the game and cartoon being similar to the comics). I'll just go with how I went through them.
I started with the Telltale games, and there's three seasons. The first season is Save the World, followed by Beyond Time and Space, and then finally The Devil's Playhouse. Both Save the World and Beyond Time and Space recently got remastered and are on Switch and PC (and i think the other two: PS and Xbox). The Devil's Playhouse remaster is releasing later this year, but you can "legally" download it if you want to play it before that. Most people who interact with SnM on here probably have played these three. I personally recommend starting here only because these games are really funny and well written and TDP really hits hard as hell.
There's also Hit the Road, a point and click game from the 90s. If you want to get it, it's on Steam for like 5 bucks, but honestly you can also legally download it. I recommend using a gamefaq cause it's like legitimately hard. For the cartoon and comic: they're both online. I read the comics here. The cartoon is also free to watch on Youtube if you look it up. It's also pretty silly.
All of the stuff above is the stuff I've pretty much interacted with, so you can start wherever, but like I said, personally I recommend the telltale games as a good starting point. There's also a VR game. You can watch a playthrough of it on youtube. It's pretty silly :)

sam and max is a comic series, cartoon and videogames in that order percell still draws an occasional doodle here and there but very rarely are they comics they started with his brother drawing charicters as a child and then him making his own comics with those charicters to tease him, for christmas one year his brother gave him a sheet of paper looking like a birth certificate as a way to literally give him the charicters so hes always captured this unbreakable but indescribable love that feels eternal with their spaces haveing baby photos of the two of them in the bathtub or shareing stories of times past and banter that only those joint at the hip can share. and crippling co dependence with that there is a gentle dance around censorship as well as he himself coming from a religious background but its very clear where he lays in it- still sam is shown to be the more spiritual one of the two and so will always make comments that feel like internalized homophobia while max is always very upfront and the most he talks about how the charicters breath a life of their own so hes been really open about how others see his charicters especially as gay icons, and every time asked the answer is a very sly "perhaps" but never cannon. and slowly as time goes on the ip slips through his fingers into others hands so thats its own thing, i havent played the VR game so i cant account for its quality but the tell tale 3d point and click adventure games are the most mixed bag the entire series gets with the weirdest ways that show absolute discomfort with everything to how mutch physical contact the two shared in the comics to just the lingering on the phrase "best friends" in a appeasing way.
the comics will always be my faveorite next to the ms dos game for both have the creator percell's closest hand in it with the comics entirely being his art and all though theres a new remaster comeing out of the last tell tale game "the devils playhouse" and its the most queer of all the tell tale games without any real spoilers to end this ramble somewhere positive though i need to just mention how often the comics have sam just constantly casually mauling max at all times.
all of the comics are on internet archive for free <3 https://archive.org/details/sammaxsurfinthehighway/RCO000_w.jpg <3 they are very special to me <3
i am so gonna read this comic series y'all have intrigued me

Update from Ill Poetic:
A couple weeks ago I was offered the opportunity to present our "Pigments of Imagination" VR experience at the La Jolla Playhouse WOW Festival on UCSD Campus. For three days, patrons of all ages and backgrounds came out to experience "Pigments" in the VR headset, from children to elders. It was an exhausting but extremely rewarding affair and the feedback was incredible.
I've spent the past few months researching and writing a master's thesis based around the principles of this project, so to take a break from paperwork and watch kids and adults react in real-time to this experience was a reminder of what inspired me to create it in the first place.
Thank you to La Jolla Playhouse for accepting and promoting our little-engine-that-could. Thanks as well to the amazing installations, experiences and performances we were in company of. Thank you to everyone who came out and packed our booth to experience this piece. Thanks to Amanda from the Playhouse and my guy Ryan Rickey for the assistance in making things run smoothly. Thanks to UC San Diego Music for the promotional support. And of course thanks to my collaborator Eito Murakami for helping to make this project possible in the first place.
I'd like to share this project in galleries, immersive spaces and festivals across the world. If you have recommendations or contacts, PLEASE MESSAGE ME!! If you'd like to be kept up on the development and availability of this project, you can subscribe to my email newsletter via the link below or just message me and I'll add your email manually.
Thank you again and see y'all soon with another one.
