I find things like the Church of Euthanasia, VHEMT, and just suicide in general to be fascinating. also fandom culture, collecting/hoarding, beanie babies, 2000s emo and post-hardcore music (which is what my blog was about for years before I joined the tcc), late 90s and early 200s internet, used to be really into args but don't really care for any from the past few years

In my largest friend group, the groupchat (looking at it because it's easier to count this way) has 23 people, plus 3 or 4 spouses/partners not present, plus a few more fb-less people. Between those 25+ people pushing mid-thirties, 1 child. Two or three more people will probably at some point have kids, one of them being me. Eleven people can be reasonably described as antinatalist.

Very few people are VHEMT-style hardcore ones, yes. But the disdain of parenthood, the desire to exclude children from public spaces, the subtle ecofascism of "having children is the worst thing you can do for The Planet"... there are almost as common as parenthood itself.

Unfortunately, veganism and antinatalism are closely tied to basic biological urges, leaving otherwise reasonable people with huge blind spots. Racism, sexism, or even ableism? Yeah, we can simply not do that, and if we inevitably do anyway, we can acknowledge that and move on.

But the stuff that's closely tied to our lifestyle? It's not even enough to say it's acceptable for people to or eat meat because they're living in a food desert and work 3 jobs so they don't have the ability to make the perfect ethical choice in every situation. It's not enough to say that an individual's personal choice is negligible compared to all the industrial stuff going on, so it's okay to take the L sometimes. No, people feel the need to insist that the way they're doing things is perfect, actually, and all the alternatives are more problematic.

Not a lot of things piss me off as much as people ✨respecting✨ the meat they eat. I mean, yeah, okay, kill animals humanely I guess. That does make sense. But the whole, "thank you brother for your sacrifice and your participation in the perfect circle of life!" sickens me more than (not the be confused with "is worse than", disgust is not morality) tossing an animal into a meat grinder and calling it a day. The latter is just so much more honest. It's obviously an abstract distinction for a cow, but I know how I feel about it - I know people who are ready to hurt me because they openly don't care, and also people who are ready to hurt me and insist they ✨love✨ me. Possibly even believe it themselves. Again, I know which I prefer.

There's also antinatalism, and people getting mad at it as if VHEMT was some sort of powerful organisation that's about to start spreading infertility inducing chemtrails and has to be stopped. Can we please just give everyone freely available contraception and uncoerced parenthood choice before we go back to debating the ethics of having 5 children?
