Safety was a concept that you’d grown unfamiliar with over the years. You missed being naive before the utility bills, the unstable worklife of a capilatistic society and withering friendships in it’s wake. You missed being able to see the people you used to call friends consistently, before the wave of bustling streets and days that went by too quickly came and swallowed you up. You used to think time wasn’t moving, but now all you could think about was how it was moving too fast; One to ten to thirteen to sixteen to eighteen to twenty and beyond. Too much, too fast. It gave you the spins.

Uncertainty was all you knew now, when you used to be so sure of yourself. Everything was always planned. You pride yourself on being prepared for every outcome, but even if you were on the right path, you could still get hit if you stopped moving. Now, however, through the mirror looking back at you, was a stranger who used to be so bright and full of life–Not synthetic green grass against a gray sky. It’s like you were a hollow shell, only able to feel when it was someone else doing the job for you. 

You were out of touch. You’d never felt so out of reach before. Disconnected from what used to give you joy–Who used to give you joy. 

Your whole world felt like you were on a nice beach somewhere warm looking at a bomb going off in the distance. Hopeless and helpless through the chaos, running through quicksand, tripping, and being swallowed by the following tsunami with eyes wide open. Frozen. Motionless. Overdosing on the adrenaline of fear.

But there was one place where all the screaming and carnage subsided…One place where you could take off all your armor and dance around like no one was watching hard enough to judge. Where you weren’t under the microscope to point out every flaw you had, but to count how many beauty marks were on your face, and trace the smile lines that made you human. The crease between your eyebrows reminded you of where you’ve been, and the gentle press of lips over it made you realize where you wanted to end up. 

Safety wasn’t something you could resite, and being uncomfortable was a familiar feeling, but it all subsided wrapped up in your boyfriend’s arms. With him. Yoo Kangmin. The light of your messy life. 

Nothing mattered when it was just the two of you. 

Nothing mattered like it did when the sun was up, birds chirping on your windowsill. Nothing mattered like the coffee in your cup and the piles of notes you were too tired to organize the night before. Nothing mattered because at the end of the day, it should’ve been the little things. 

He was the clean corner of your depression room, the canned food that never went bad, the hands that covered your ears when the noise was too much. He was the certainty you could feel despite being numb. 

With him you weren’t scared to close your eyes. You could talk sunrise to sunset and not regret a word you’d said. Love was the strongest drug you never had to buy. And the easiest one you could get addicted to. 

His fingers threaded through the ends of your hair as you leaned back to his side, “What’s on your mind?”

“Honestly,” You started, silencing yourself in his everlasting presence, “you make everything okay.” 

He guffawed at your confession, “Really?” 

“Yeah,” You replied, “Thank you.” 

He pressed his lips to the top of your head, lingering long after he’d pulled back. “You make it all worth it, y/n. All the small, irrelevant things don’t seem like it when I’m with you.” 

You turned, lifting your head from off his shoulder. His eyes were so sincere it made you draw a blank. He was comfort within a person, the man designed down to a T for you. You never thought you’d get it, and now you’ll spend your whole life being grateful. 

“I love you a lot, Kangmin.” 

A grin spread across his face, yours mirroring it in an instant. “I love you more, stupid.” 

You rolled your eyes as he took your cheeks within his palms, pulling you down to him. Face to face. Your heart picked up a steady rhythm—One you hoped harmonized with his—Until he finally pressed his lips to yours, fitting almost too perfectly; In your life, mind, soul. 

You pulled back momentarily, “For the record, I’m not the stupid one…Stupid.” He laughed in response, wrapping his arms around you as you got comfortable against his chest again. 

You were uncertain about most things, It’s true, but one thing was for sure, you saw him in your fate.

“Shh, it’s me. I promise it’s me,” Kangmin’s voice came out hushed, breaking slightly from the stress. You breathed a sigh of relief, blinking back the tears of fear that had formed when you first saw his silhouette as you lowered your gun. Sinking to the floor, you finally let yourself relax, having exhausted both mind and body in the last few hours.

The situation you were in was mentally draining to say the least. Having Kangmin’s doppelgänger on the loose had you both questioning what was real. You hated having to threaten Kangmin every time, having no choice but to point your gun at him, willing to pull the trigger in a split second unless he convinced you he wasn’t the fake. 

He said it was for your safety and that he didn’t mind. But it terrified you. Would you even be able to pull the trigger if needed? What if you misjudged and hurt him accidentally? When it was Kangmin’s face you were staring at, you didn’t trust yourself to ever be able to attack him. Kangmin would never hurt you. The thought of hurting him was unbearable. 

But his doppelgänger was ruthless, and so unlike the man he took the form of. He would shoot either of you without deliberation. You both knew the risks. Sticking together was the only way to be sure you knew who you were with. So, whenever Kangmin had to leave your side, you became paranoid. 

Kangmin shuffled towards you, crouching down to the floor next to you, back resting against the wall. You let your head fall to his shoulder, breathing in his scent that only made your mind sure that it was undeniably your Kangmin.

No matter how good his dopplegänger was at mirroring his face, mannerisms, vocal inflections, and body language, it was never perfect. One of the hardest things to replicate was Kangmin’s natural scent. You’d been close enough to him before to always recognize the pristinely clean scent that made you uneasy. Like highly concentrated chemicals, abnormally untainted. It wasn’t natural, and neither was the body that accompanied it. You would always prefer Kangmin’s musky scent, minty breath, or sweaty body over it. 

“Have you eaten? What about water?” Kangmin asked, looking over your figure with worry. You shook your head.

“I have no appetite.” 

Kangmin could sympathize with the sentiment. He, too, forgot to take care of himself unless he knew you were safe. His stomach twisted, and he felt anxious all of a sudden. Since being kidnapped back at the abandoned house, he always felt like there were eyes on him. Screens, cameras, mirrors; any place they could hide behind. He glanced around the room, fingers reaching for the gun on the floor slowly. You weren’t alone.

Searing gunshots echoed through the empty room, startling you. Kangmin braced your head, shielding you from seeing anything that was going on. A few more shots from the gun in his hand resulted in settling silence. Kangmin’s breath was ragged and uneven, close to your ear. Your head fixed against his chest allowed you to hear his heartbeat, racing faster than ever. You kept as quiet as you could until Kangmin relaxed, breathing evening out and heartbeat calming down.

“I got him. He’s dead.” 

You opened your eyes slowly, gulping at the sight of the lifeless body on the floor, blood splattered across his chest where Kangmin had shot. His face distorted, no longer resembling that of Kangmin. 

“It’s over?” 

Kangmin nodded. “It’s over.” 

The next hour was spent gathering your things from the makeshift base, getting ready to return home. You organized everything, giving your brain time to process that you no longer had to spend every moment on guard, in fear. You no longer had to carry a gun around everywhere you went. You no longer had to worry about Kangmin’s safety, or be prepared to treat any unexpected injuries either of you may have gotten. 

It still felt unreal. The dangerous situation, stalking, being watched, running, hiding, all in hopes they wouldn’t find you or Kangmin had been going on for years. Some months were better than others. But now, in the blink of an eye, it was finally over. You accepted the reality too quickly. Your hope overshadowed the lingering doubt in the back of your mind. 

You failed to notice the doppelgänger’s body still twitching, or the dripping wound on Kangmin’s arm from a hot bullet, searing right through him.

confronting eternity

synopsis: an immortal god and a traveler sit down for a meal and a chat.

pairing: immortal god!yongseung (verivery) x immortal!reader

genre: historical fantasy, slight angst, comfort if you squint

warnings: existential af (but this is one of my fics, you knew that), do not take this to be 100% historically accurate, loosely based off of genshin

you gaze at the feast in front of you in awe, with plates full of food neatly arranged on your table. of course, yongseung could afford the best, even in mortal form.

from the rooftop restaurant you were currently in, you had a beautiful view of the light-filled city, bustling with activity as sunset approached.

"my, what a pleasure it is to be invited by a god for dinner. thank you, again.”

he chuckles. "believe me, the pleasure is all mine. i know you saved my nation from calamity, so it’s the least i could do. i’m glad we could finally sit down for a proper meal.”

"yongseung, there's no need to thank me, it was the right thing to do," you say with a smile, beginning to fill your plate with various foods. “it's just nice to talk like this. i know we’re always so busy, especially you. ”

he sighs, and stares briefly at the vast expanse of hills, especially vibrant during the spring.

"sometimes i wish i weren't. thousands of years of work can be quite taxing on the soul."

the waiter stops by your table with two cups of hot tea and a kettle, and you briefly stop conversation to bow politely. you take a sip, relishing its taste. even after all this time traveling, your love for any sort of tea remains constant.

"oh, you old man! when you have the chance, you should travel the world with me—there's quite a lot to see."

yongseung raises an eyebrow. "you're quite old too, remember? but maybe i will take you up on your offer one day, if i feel comfortable to leave my nation in the hands of the people."

"sightseeing would do you some good. i feel 5,000 years young after running around all sorts of worlds! only the heavens know how long it's been since i've visited another..."

you stop yourself before you go on another one of your excited (and nostalgic) rambles. yongseung's still listening to you intently, though.

he carefully takes a sip of his own tea. "and here i thought you were just an ordinary human traveler when we first met, although i was quickly proven wrong. there is nothing ordinary about what you've been able to accomplish with your powers."

you smile amusedly while trying not to take all the jjajangmyeon noodles. he's busied himself with eating the meat, namely the pork belly.

"eh, everyone thinks so unless i tell them otherwise. you still treated me well regardless. or how should i put this, normally. i'm thankful for that. and in many ways, i'm no better than a mortal until i complete my goal on this planet."

it's a little sad, really. you miss your sibling. you've never lost sight of why you started your journey across the various nations of this world in the first place.

the god stares at you, his face containing traces of melancholy. "how selfish of me to say, but i find eternity to be a little less unbearable when you're here."

ah, what a sap. you love him, though. he's not so tough when you're around.

"then, i'm glad my time on this world has not been a waste."

at the start of your journey, you had told yourself that you wouldn't make many attachments to those you met, as it would make it harder to leave.

first and foremost, you wanted your sibling by your side so that you could traverse the galaxy together again. you just happened to help people along the way—nothing too deep.

but things were a little different with yongseung. despite being one of the gods that helped oversee korea and its people, he was someone you could now call a dear friend. the thought of saying "goodbye" to him, even if it only had to be temporarily, wasn't a fun one.

you've gotten used to encountering him every so often, studying some book or on a walk to clear his mind from all of his duties.

he smiles peacefully, and you're glad to see the expression. "i'll always remind you that your time is well spent with me."

at that, you pause to take in the rustling of the wind, the beautiful colors of sunset, the design on your napkin, and the reflective glint of yongseung's cubical necklace charm.

to think, that you might never have this exact view again. it's quite a bittersweet feeling, thinking that the day would come where you would leave earth. yongseung's well aware of this too, but logically, there was no point in thinking about it so much.

it'll be a long while before that day comes, as there are still so many questions for you to answer about this world.

so, until you have to move on again, you'll both cherish the memories you've made together. and maybe, just for a while, this can be eternity for you.

a/n: oh dear lord this is way overdue for @restlessmaknae's coexistence collab. i underestimated how tired this year would make me. i'm not that dissatisfied with the fic, but i wish my brain could come up with better sentences sometimes. i was thinking about how some people stay in one place their whole lives and how others move around so often, and how they would each perceive the other type of person. it's so different, isn't it? just food for thought. and also, my fantasy brainrot is too much.

He’d help you shower and change bedsheets for you when you sweat extraordinary much due to you laying under 3 blankets out of freezing. Would bring you a glass of water when you wake up at 4 am because you are dehydrated. Is the best nanny. Has no problem with helping you walk to the bathroom as you try to literally crawl there from all the pain. Would even kneel next to you while you take one of those period shits and just need to hold his hand for support. 11/10 (Oh how I would need exactly that lmao)

Hoyoung:

This guy- damn he makes you feel alive at those times. Brings you fruits and vegetables when you are expecting it the least than you thought you would need it. Makes sure you eat your breakfast and has an extra cabinet for your period food, may it be dry food for when you can’t eat without feeling like throwing up or extra fat food for when you can’t stop eating. Tugs you into the blanket while he opens the window for you to get fresh air. Somehow he would be a master in making you look healthy. At least your skin color doesn’t look like your basement’s walls when he takes care of you.

Minchan:

Your best enotional support. You take a break from the outside world? No problem. He will be your source of entertainment. Does skin care with you and insists on you leaning back and letting him do all the work. Puts on a cartoon like Rick and Morty or anything thats easy to watch while not really having to processing too much of information. Whatever he does he makes time fly and it doesn’t feel like your period lasted that long. Will also insist on you taking a very big nap for resting to recharge energy.

Gyehyeon:

A stereotypical house wife 😅 cleans up after you, makes sure your bedsheets are neatly made for you to have a 5 star hotel feeling as well as cook anything you want. I see him as that type of person who tries to make you go for a walk with him for you to get some air and to stimulate your body circulation. I can’t but think that you would have to tell him again and again that it’s just too exhausting to go for a walk or to eat something specific to the point of you yelling at him. He wouldn’t be mad about it. Just a little upset but not because of you but he’d be upset about himself. Would be so frustrated if he couldn’t help you properly so he needs some reassurance that him just being by your side can be enough too sometimes.

Yeonho:

He grew up with two sisters so I think he’d be used to everything and anything. Nothing can take him by surprise. Would deal with blood stains on the sheets or pants, buys you your favorite snack, is easygoing about buying you pads and tampons and wouldn’t come back from grocery shopping without bringing you a gift; flowers, a book, a new game for you two to play on the Nintendo, a movie, honestly anything that would help you keeping distracted from the pain.

Yongseung:

Ohhhh our boy would be so sweet and touchy. He would give you massages, wrap you in a blanket or two, hold you close, rock you back and forth in your burrito blanket for you to fall asleep, lots of kisses on the forehead and strokes your cheeks a lot it would be so incredibly soothing. Him being next to you would be balm for the soul. He’d even dim the lights for your sensitive eyes and put on spa music and scented candles XD Whispers sweet words into your ears and tells you he is there for you and that he won’t go away. (I’m having heart eyes rn aaaah)

Kangmin:

Kangmin wouldn’t necessarily know what to do but instead always asks if he could do something for you. He is like a minion you could order around. A bit helpless the first few times but once he has settled with a routine he is the best at it. Asks the Hyungs to cook something for you. Gives you his neck pillow and it’s the sweetest thing like- all in all he tries to share stuff that makes him feel better. Would let you wear his boyer shorts when its that time of the month because they are just so much more comfortable. “He’s staring again,” your friend whispers.

Out of the corner of your eye, you catch Gyehyeon’s gaze. Sure enough, two tables away, he’s intently focused on your notes, wearing a look that's hard to decipher.

Normally, you’d bask in the attention, but today is different. You’re pressed for time.

Last night, you ended up staying way too late at the martial arts showcase, totally not wrapped up in Gyehyeon’s matches. Now, you’re racing against the clock to fit in more practice for your physics exam later this afternoon, unless you want to bomb it.

The thought of failing sharpens your focus on the remaining problems until your friend scoffs, “He’s not even being subtle about it.”

Their annoyance is more distracting than the enticing idea of Gyehyeon watching you, making you grip your pen tighter.

“I think he’s looking at your notes…”

That did it.

You lift your gaze, furrowing your brows, and find him unabashedly meeting your eye, an eyebrow raised.

“Hey,” your friend murmurs, “what are you—” but you cut them off and stride between the tables straight over to Gyehyeon.

“What am I doing wrong?”

“Huh?” he replies, sitting up in surprise.

“You’re staring at my notes,” you gesture back at your table, suddenly aware that you've just marched up to your crush. “If you see a mistake, you need to tell me. I can’t afford to fail this test.”

“Oh, sorry,” he shrugs. “I have no idea if your work is right or not.”

Your face falls in despair as pressure mounts, “What the heck? Then why are you staring at me?”

“I was just watching you write.”

He smirks, and that expression does things to your already shaky composure; you can’t remember how to breathe.

He leans in closer, lowering his voice just for you, and whispers, “I think your hands are attractive.”

"Yongseung and [y/n]. I need to have a chat with you in my office," your teacher says after distributing the grades.

Once you get there, your teacher tells you that as always, you have both achieved great results, except your math grades are lacking and Yongseung's literature grades are lacking.

"[y/n], you're good at literature, and Yongseung, you're good at maths. Why don't you help each other out?"

Right away, Yongseung scoffs.

"Sir, I'm sorry, but there's no way I'm helping this thing," he says, pointing at you and sticking his tongue out.

"Sir, he just called me a thing. How could I work with him?!" you complain.

"I'm not hearing any of this. You've both been doing bad in these subjects for years now while you excel in everything else. If your grades don't improve for the next test, there will be consequences."

The teacher leaves you both sitting there in his own office.

"I guess we've got no choice," you mumble.

Yongseung rolls his eyes and stands up.

"Meet me at my house today at 6pm, then," he says, leaving you there.

"I don't even know where you live!" you call out after him, but he's gone.

"No, [y/n], you're doing it all wrong! You have to solve this first," Yongseung says, pointing to a part of the equation with his pencil.

"Well explain properly so I can understand!"

"Use your brain so you'll understand me!"

Both of you sigh, leaning back in your chairs.

"I hate this so much," you grumble.

"I hate it more!" Yongseung huffs.

"Okay, let's switch to literature instead," you suggest, pulling out your textbook.

After learning from Yongseung's terrible teaching methods that impatience won't get you anywhere, you do your best to carefully explain everything to him despite hating his guts, yet Yongseung seems to have a hard time catching on, mostly because he's staring at you.

You don't realize his eyes haven't looked down at the textbook once, and you don't realize that his gaze is only on you as you talk. Even he's confused by himself, wondering why he can't fight the urge to look at you and your lips as you pronounce the intricate words of book titles and author names, or your delicate eyelashes as they flutter open and shut each time you blink.

As he watches you talk about a subject you're so passionate about, he begins to realize how beautiful you are.

"Yongseung, why aren't you answering me? What's the difference between a short story and flash fiction?"

"Huh, what? Uh.... flash fiction... is about lightning?"

You sigh, noticing the boy is seemingly drowsy. You close the textbook and peer closely at Yongseung, your chin sitting on your palm.

"D-don't look at me like that so closely... or I'll kiss you," he murmurs, whispering and blurting out the last part.

"What?" you choke.

"Nothing!" Yongseung snaps, pushing you away.

"Did you just say you'll kiss me?" you laugh.

"No!" Yongseung scoffs.

You roll your eyes at him.

"Yeah, right. I heard that! Well, pretty boy. What will you do now?" you ask him, as you lean in even closer than before.

Frankly, you don't know why you're acting so confident all of a sudden, but maybe its your hatred for Yongseung that is making you want to bury all of your nervousness, even though your heart is beating wildly in your chest.

Yongseung looks down at your lips a couple of times before he shyly, then roughly, grabs the back of your neck and presses a firm kiss to your lips.

His warm mouth melts onto yours and you feel a little dizzy after he pulls away, his face flushed.

"Um, yeah, well... let's get back to learning about flash fiction, shall we?" you suggest, stuttering on your own words.
