@blacklightburned
Everything felt...different. Fatigue wasn’t the same this way, it was more mental than the physical burn out that he would feel at the end of the day. He was tired, but he wasn’t tired from walking, or running. He was just tired mentally, emotionally, hands shoved into the hoodie he paid for because his shirt and the jacket--god, his fucking jacket--had been so waterlogged, there was no hope.
He supposes he should be thankful, considering all he lost was his clothes, the integrity of his wallet, and a working cell phone. His life was on that list until a few days ago.
It was scary, this was all just. Scary. A shaky hand rises in front of him, an easing breath as he wills this odd energy forward. Reggie watching in mute horror as a clear stream of water manifests from his hand, gathering into it’s own self supporting...thing, wrapping around his wrist and moving.
He’s about to touch it when there’s a sound, movement in his peripheral that sets off alarms in his head, has him acting on frazzled reflexes. Reggie flails, water careening out of his hand high speed and splashing against the opposite wall of where he’s pressed himself.
“Wha-who’s there!”

Sacred Rites
“Do you swear to honor The Heavenly Champion in all your works, Jaune Arc?”
To be a Paladin, to be servant to the divine and defender of the innocent. That was his dream.
“Yes, I swear, from the day I entered the Victarion to now, I have been the Goddess’s to command and lead.”
“Do you answer to our Goddess, and only our Goddess?”
“To no other, now and forever, never shall I let man, law, or force of nature, interrupt me in my quests and duties, I answer to the Goddess and only the Goddess, or those that she speaks through.”
“Will you uphold the oaths of our order?”
“I will feed the starving,
I will chastise the foolish,
I will forgive the repentant,
I will be generous to the poor,
I will help the needy,
I will act when needed, never just when called upon,
I will protect the young, the weak, the weary, and the innocent, I will fight for the common man!
I will be honorable in all pursuits,
strong in body, faith, and mind,
Never shall greed or callousness, guide my path!
For I make my own!
I will guide the weary, tired, and directionless to the warmth of our hearths, and give them guidance, and I will let them go if they desire to be alone, but never close the door.
I will live with freedom in my servitude, now and forever.”
He didn’t need to look up to know that tears crested the eyes of Champion Maria, with a crack in her normally stern voice she continued.
“Then as Champion of the Victarion, Maria Calavera, I name you Jaune Arc first Paladin of Pyrrha-Nikos, Heavenly Champion, Savior of the Commons, First Apotheosis, she who cast down the Old Tyrants! Hold your head up,”
Jaune did, looking into the silver eyes of the surprisingly youthful looking Champion.
“you will carry your head high, as you are the first and only true Paladin of Pyrrha-Nikos! Take pride in position, but never let humility leave you, you will carry the weight of the faith on your shoulders, but with the strength of all those with the faith! Now go forth child, and meet those you would cherish and protect!”
With a tear going down his cheek, he turned and looked out at the full temple. He had finally realized his dream, one that he would live forever more.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Entering his chambers Jaune collapsed on the humble bed of his.
It had been a heavenly experience after the ceremony, full of friendship, feasting, games, dancing, along with promises and new memories being made. It beginning and ending on a high note, with friends from across the city and continent showing up, and them promising to meet once again as soon as he has leave to go questing. He couldn’t have had a better day if he tried!
It really made the last eight years seem like nothing in comparison. He let out a happy sigh, truly his hardships and sacrifices had paid off. What would the boy that he was at ten years old think of himself now?
Probably that he should have left home sooner.
Hmm-pf, the thought making him crack up a little.
Laying on his bed looking around his normally bare chamber were full to bursting with the gifts, more than he knew what to do with, but it mattered not, he’d cherish them all.
The masterwork sword that Ruby made him.
The gambeson Coco had made for him.
The tabard Velvet made for him.
The bottle of fine whiskey that Yang made him promise not open till they did quest together.
Emerald had even gotten him back the coin purse that he lost! He enjoyed the embroidery on it that she had gotten done on it.
Brother Ren had come by with Sister Arslan to set up the party, nothing less than what he’d expect from Tenders of Sun Wukong, Second Apotheosis.
Ren had even given him a pair of fine gloves, some potions, and even an alchemy set and basic instructions!
Arslan just promised not to beat him too badly at the next inter temple championship. Also gave him a nice embroidered belt with gold inlays.
Old Port had come by with enough food to feed an army, and left him a nice antler handled skinning knife.
Tukson had brought him some books to read, ranging from philosophy to legend to stories from other continents.
So many gifts.
A sharp knock on the door took him out of his thoughts.
Jaune quickly moved to answer the door.
On the other side, Champion Maria Calavera. A woman many years his senior looking no older than a decade his senior.
Jaune dropped to his knee, and paid respects. “I’m honored by your presence, my champion.”
“Lift your head and stand boy, we are both equals in Her eyes.”
Jaune rose to his feet, the tall young man towering above the champion, and he beckoned Maria in.
Maria entered and sat at his desk, and Jaune took a seat on his bed.
“Pardon, my rudeness, My Champion,-”
“As I said we are both equal in Her eyes, so you may address me as Maria, or not at all. There will be no deferential treatment between the two of us, are we clear?” Maria asked sternly.
Jaune’s face blushed, and he scratched the side of his face. “But, My-” Maria raised an eyebrow sharply. “I mean Maria, how can I compare to a legendary figure of the faith such as yourself, when I just became a Paladin today?” Jaune argued weakly.
“Tut-tut, my boy, you sell yourself short, you are the first Paladin of this faith, a faith over a thousand years old and you are the first paladin, the first to actually channel Her power!” Maria jabbed a slender finger into Jaune’s chest. “The first to not be granted her power, but to be a conduit to her greatest, and the first man to join her side!” Maria sly smirked at him. “What makes you think that the Goddess’s chosen is not worthy to refer to her Champion by name?”
A blood-red color over took the poor young man’s face, and he weakly mumbled. “When you put it that way, I suppose I can’t really refute you, can I?”
“Hmm, nope!” Maria answered cheerfully.
“Hah, so onward we move forward, what brings you here at such a late hour, Ma-Maria,” Jaune asked with effort. “I don’t mean to be rude, but it’s getting late, and it has been quite the day.”
Maria smiled at him. “Well, that’s because it has passed Midnight and it is officially time for you to perform your first duties as Paladin, as I have been asked by the Goddess to come gather you to bring you to the sanctum.”
Jaune’s brow furrowed with confusion. “She has? Why has she not called me herself?”
Maria let out a laugh. “Oh, she’s just a bit excited, and didn’t think you could handle her voice right now.”
“Oh!” Jaune said understanding, as the power of Gods control directly related to their emotions. If too excited she might blast him with too much power by speaking to his mind. Conduit of her power he might be, but Maria had decades of time to acclimate herself to the presence of the divinity.
Maria nodded and got up, “Now come along, we shall not keep Her waiting, hmm?
Quickly he jumped to his feet ready to go. “Of course not, that would be folly.”
“Indeed.”
In truth Jaune knew his way to the sanctum, but he did doubt his ability to get in without Maria.
“So, do you know my first duty, Maria.” Jaune asked with any trouble this time.
Maria lightly smiled. “Oh, that between you and Her, Jaune. Hehehe.”
Cocking his head in confusion, Jaune could only wonder what she meant, perhaps it was a test of devotion or strength of character, or possibly his first quest!
Yang would be so proud if he got a quest!
They arrived at the sanctum fairly quick, as said before they both knew the way.
The doors that hid the sanctum were taller than two of Jaunes, and big enough for a dozen men to wall shoulder to shoulder to pass through. Made of a beautiful bronze inlaid with artwork of previous champions.
Maria opened the doors with one hand. “Go on now, try not to have too much fun.”
Jaune looked confused, but went inside anyway.
The door closed behind him leaving him facing a pool of steaming water and the idol of Pyrrha Nikos.
The idol stared at Jaune down to his soul seeming to strip him down to his most primal components.
Jaune then fell to his knees. “I have come to you, my Goddess.”
A please hum seemed to come from the statue and the entire room.
“Raise my Paladin, it is time to attend to your duties.” The warm voice of his Goddess seemed to echo from behind his ear.
Jaune did as he was told and rose. “What would you have me do, my Goddess.”
Another pleased hum came forth.
A light whisper seemed to dance in his ear. “Oh yes, I like the way you call me that.”
Jaune looked confused. “Why would I call you anything but that?”
“Oh, you little charmer.”
Jaune’s confusion remained. “Ok, but what is my first duty?”
“STRIP!” His Goddess boomed around him, nearly knocking Jaune onto his butt.
Jaune staggered around drunkenly for a second, a thin stream of blood falling from his ears.
“Oh, I’m so sorry, my little Paladin! I got a little excited for this!” His Goddess echoed again, as a holy glow healed Jaune.
“It’s fine, my Goddess, but, um, may I ask why I must remove my clothing?” Jaune innocently asked, finding his clothing rather comfy despite the humidity of the room.
The idol and the room went silent as though his Goddess was in thought, ha, surely not, she must merely be pondering me a fool. Jaune thought to himself.
The Idol’s cut emerald eyes glowed. “My Paladin, my dear sweet Paladin, how am I to embrace you and acclimate you to my power if there is a boundary between us?” The idol's clothes disappeared leaving only a naked metal idol.
Jaune’s face went blush. “Oh, I guess that makes sense...”
The idol seemed to smile at him, a little scary if he might add. “Now once again, STRIP!” The words seemed to drip out of the idols mouth like honey.
Jaune shivered under the Idols words, but did as he was told pulling up his shirt. “WAIT,” The idol cried out as he did. Jaune looked at the Idol again in confusion. “DO IT SLOWLY~”
Shrugging Jaune pulled his shirt down, only to grab it by the hem and then slowly rolled the fabric up, revealing inch by inch the naked, supple and muscular body of Jaune Arc.
The shirt rising like a curtain to show the sharp, deep cut v of his Adonis belt that led into his pants, hiding a treasure Pyrrha would see soon enough. The shirt continued it’s slow trip up, showing one at a time his flat, smooth, uncontainably powerful abs, and smoothly contoured sides of his waist, showing off his powerful core.
The next destination to be revealed was his broad chest that barely contained his two muscular pecs, each looking like they could crush a steel ingot between them! His arms looking like masterfully crafted pieces of art rather than flesh and muscle. Above them was his wide shoulders corded with powerful muscles under his skin, that held up a veiny neck coiled with even more muscles!
Then he folded the shirt and put it on the floor, turning around showing off a wonderfully sculpted back, one so well made she was going to give Maria even more regards. The idol's eyes trailing down his back to see two cute dimples on his back!
Then he pulled down the pants showing off a well rounded ass! They had dimples too! And-
The Idol’s emerald eyes cracked at the sight between his legs, and then instantly reformed.
“Now what would you ask of me, my Goddess?” Jaune said, feeling a little lost about what was going on.
His Goddess said nothing for a while just staring at him.
After a couple minutes passed, Jaune coughed awkwardly into his hand and pronounced. “If you do not speak, my Goddess, I will assume I have displeased you and leave.”
“What, sorry?” His Goddess asked him, must have spoken too quietly.
“I asked if I offended you, my Goddess.”
“Oh, noooo~, I am most pleased, most pleased indeed.” Jaune smiled. If she’s happy, I’m happy, he thought to himself.
“So what would you have me do now?”
“Clean thyself my Paladin, buttttt~, slowly~!” His Goddess asked of him.
Jaune nodded determinedly, as she asked, so it shall it be done!
Jaune slowly walked his way into the languidly steaming water, hissing a little bit at the bite of warmth it shot through his flesh, but endured for his Goddess! Also the hot water started to feel quite nice. Reaching the center of the pool, he was waist deep. He looked around for any soap or oils, a small wooden bowl full of various cleaning agents.
The idol of Pyrrha’s emeralds cracked once again, and then reformed in an instant watching her Paladin bathing.
Jaune eventually emerged from the pool clean as a whistle. “Uuuh, I need to do that more often, I feel brand new. You have my thanks my Goddess.” Jaune said reventently.
His Goddess’s idol did speak, for some reason it’s metal cheeks turning cherry red, why would it do that though?
Finally her voice blessed him again. “And you shall do this sacred rite before me everyday you’re here, my Paladin!”
Jaune then let out a muffled yawn. “Apologize my Goddess, I fear my fatigue has gotten the better of me.”
“It’s fine my Paladin, I have only a few more tasks for you. Anoint yourself with the holy oils, first!”
Jaune did as asked, slowly patting his body with a palm’s worth of holy oil across his body. Smearing a sheen of oil across his sculpted body, all across his body.
A loud crack caught his attention, looking up at his Goddess’s idol to see fragments of emeralds everywhere, but miraculously missing him.
“My Goddess! Are you well, is there an interloper that wishes you harm, please answer me!”
“I’m fine, I’m well! Just a little over excited is all.”
Jaune nodded and returned to finish anointing himself. Finally, his body was ready for whatever his Goddess wished of him.
“I’m finished, my Goddess, what task is next?”
A deep, smile appeared on the idols metal face.
“I require you to cover my idol with various oils to insure that it remain’s form and beauty, this my task for you!”
Jaune nodded. “I will be honored to clean you my Goddess!”
A melodic hum spread throughout the room, giving Jaune a pleasent vibration in his chest.
Jaune knelt before the statue coating his hands in the sacred oils, and put his hands on the feet of the idol, and began working his way up the statue, smearing the oil across the metal of idol, which felt oddly warm, and soft? He didn’t quite understand that, but he was sure that it made sense.
The melodic hum became louder as he worked his way up the legs of the statue making sure to get every inch of it! His duty demanded perfection, and perfection it will have. The grew even louder and louder, practically causing his hands to go numb as he worked in between the legs of the statue, getting each and every surprisingly soft and wet? Inche of the idol till the hum turned into a ringing cry, as he was blasted into the pool, blood leaking out of his eyes and ears.
Jaune would ask his Goddess what he did to offend her when he could see which way was up.
Another holy light descended upon Jaune healing him again.
“My sincerest apology, my Paladin! I merely became over stimulated.”
Jaune gave a shaky thumbs up and got back to work.
Jaune fell from what could only be described as a hole in space into his bed, clearly unconscious, blood leaking from his face before a bronze holy power covered him, cleaning and healing him.
Pyrrha noticed that the power was transfering into him slightly easier than before, her reasoning may have been bullshit, but not complete bullshit, if he was naked he would absorb her power much easier. By the end of the week he might even be able to do small miracles!
That said Pyrrha felt very content with her little Paladin, he even finished caring for her idol! Not even Maria could do that in her first year as her champion, requiring the help of several acolytes each day. Still that was no slight against her Champion, Jaune was just a rare breed that could accept divine power like a sponge absorbing water.
That said she didn’t expect him to make her climax three times, how was that even possible through a statue!
Pyrrha smirked down at her little Paladin, she was very much excited to watch him grow.
Pushing her from the heavens into the earth, Pyrrha put a pair of lips on his, and then whispered, “Oh my little Paladin, you are loved like no other. Now rest, for the world will have need of you soon. Your oaths pusted and pressure, but you’ll endure, and I will support you every step of the way. For you will be my greatest act in this world, this I swear.”
Then she receded back to the heavens. The various gifts in his room briefly shimmering before the light faded.
AN1: This idea came to me as Jaune being a Paladin and Pyrrha being his goddess sugar mama, who constantly feels him up at everychance, but Jaune doesn’t see anything sexual about it so doesn’t mind.
AN2: Unfortunately Jaune is about to learn despite his goddess being good, her mortality is definitely like the Greek gods in terms of consent and free will.

Chapter Thirty: Interloper
Note: Thanks for all the amazing feedback, everyone! This has been a super stressful week. I just built my first pc, and I have to take it to Geeksquad today (10/26) to have them test it for a power issue that causes my system to randomly shut down without notice. I’m not scared to death at all! Nope! Hahahahahaha! *Cries*.
(-~-)
Light shined through thick cracks in the roof of the cavern as excess moisture dripped from above, colliding with the ground below. The area didn’t look entirely dissimilar to that of the underworld, thick layers of luminescent stone coating multiple surfaces around the conduit, and a similar stone forming the monument itself, albeit without the otherworldly glow. The black sludge remained, but no longer seemed to bubble and boil as it once had. How a cold fluid could seemingly boil was beyond Dante, but then again, the many fascinating facets of the underworld were more his brother’s thing.
“Think of it as a kind of scab, the tear itself being an open wound that never heals.” Trish said as she watched Dante examine the area immediately around the conduit, the youngest of Sparda’s twin sons clearly trying to comprehend the cult’s goals in this place.” And try not to spend too long in that sludge. I’ve heard that it can have strange effects on those who spend extended amounts of time near it.”
Dante perked up slightly at her statement, formerly lost in thought. “Do you think that it’s going to affect V? He was soaked in this stuff, and he wasn’t exactly in one piece when we found him.”
As her face migrated towards her hands, she shrugged, not so much aloof as she was indecisive. “I can’t really say. There are very few conduits, so this fluid is very uncommon. It might be worth bringing some back for Magnolia to study, but I’m not sure she could come up with much. She’s a botanist after all, and this isn’t exactly a plant.”
He responded with a nod, agreeing with her sentiment. Trish was correct, Magnolia wasn’t that kind of scientist. But perhaps she knew someone that could help them identify the core components of the otherworldly substance. It was best to have some sort of idea what they might be going up against if this stuff had actually made it into his bloodstream. And if all else failed, maybe Nico could give it a look. It was a long-shot, but Nero had told Dante that the young mechanism had managed to cobble together an actual time control device from a shard of Geryon’s horn that V had brought back, so anything was possible. Between the two of them, it seemed that nothing was entirely out of the question when it came to dubious acts of scientific research and even more dubious applications of… magic? Was it magic? How the hell did Magnolia do half of the things that she did.
Dante was very tempted to ask his older twin how they’d met in the first place.
I mean, it was rather unlikely that he’d asked her on a date or something once upon a time.
He had a hard time imagining Vergil taking to a woman at all, but then again he did have two sons. But in all fairness, that wasn’t an activity that required much conversation. It was more of an “actions speak louder than words” sort of affair, except in the instances where those actions caused a large quantity of words. Regardless, Dante was somewhat positive that Vergil and Magnolia had never had that sort of relationship. She was several times out of his league, though he liked to imagine that Vergil would pretend to not be interested in her just for the hell of it.
The younger of the two twins wasn’t going to pretend that he knew much of anything about his brother’s love life, especially since he quite literally knew nothing about the mother’s of either of his nephews, but he was willing to believe that Vergil was probably the mutually exclusive sort. Deep down, he had to have feelings for at least one of them. And considering the ease in which Magnolia toyed with the devil slayer in blue, he got the impression that they were comfortable around on another. But there was a large gap between conversation and… well that.
He didn’t really want to imagine anything having to do with his brother’s love life in that regard at all.
Dante ran his finger against a deposit of Luminite, silently surprised to see it here again. It had been ages since he’d found any of the demonic mineral anywhere, yet here it was, practically oozing from every available surface, and glowing brightly in the dim cavern. What an unusual sight to behold. “Haven’t seen this stuff since I met you. Seems like a lifetime ago now. Any idea why it might be here?” The blond devil jumped down from the spot she was perched on, no longer content with simply observing. Despite the fact that she’d made short work of the place before Dante had arrived, he’d insisted on taking a look for himself before they departed and returned home. While he possessed the utmost respect and confidence in Trish’s judgment and investigative skills, he also felt that coming all this way only to long use his own eyes to give the area a once over would be a foolish mistake, and the last thing he felt like doing was making more of those. So on the off chance that Trish had actually managed to miss something, Dante decided to take the opportunity to check things out for himself, and this rare but all too familiar form of sedimentary stone was far too strange to pass over.
“If I was willing to make a guess, I’d say that the influence of the conduit is doing this. Things tend to become more demonic immediately around one of these things, and the presence of naturally occurring Luminite in the human world just means that we're close to a huge deposit of demonic power. Malet island isn't unique in that regard.” She took a moment to look at the stone closer, considering something to herself.” That being said, I still can’t imagine what a cult would need V’s blood and an arcana for. It’s not like this is…”
She froze suddenly, something occurring to her. Dante gave her a curious look, alarm bells sounding in his head as he considered what she might be thinking.” What is it?”
She shook her head slowly, seemingly understanding their intentions for the first time. And what occurred to her was disturbing to say the least.” … Why didn’t I see it before? This is very bad.” She said, turning in the direction of the now dilapidated exit.” V is a descendant of Sparda like you and your brother. Your father sealed off the human and demon worlds, which is why nothing can really come through a conduit like this in the first place. But with the help of an Arcana that your father helped create, and V’s blood…”
Dante stopped dead in his tracks.
Oh. OH. Oh, shit.
(-~-)
The fog was noticeably thicker than it had been, a light rain joining it as it blanketed the area in a chilly haze. After coming to the conclusion that hovering over V like he’d developed the bubonic plague wasn’t going to help matters in the slightest, the Darkslayer had allowed Magnolia to talk him into leaving the room. The two had ventured into Magnolia’s attic, the space housing the majority of her plants. The closure of her shop meant literally nothing to her botanical studies, and as such, she still needed to water the specimens in order to keep them in good condition. Well, that went for the majority of her plants, at least. Some were actually allergic to moisture, an aspect of their biology that she was never going to stop finding inconvenient. How on earth did a plant of any kind, be it from the underworld or not, manage to function without the presence of water? One could only imagine that things worked a little differently down there.
Vergil browsed the wide selection of academic texts that she kept on the bookcases in her workspace, keen to find something to help keep his mind occupied. He couldn’t make V wake up any faster, and she had been kind enough to allow him to stay as long as he liked until such an opportunity presented itself, but there was only one guest room in the house, and it was occupied. If Vergil couldn’t stretch out and make himself comfortable, then he would have to settle for entertaining himself in other ways.
“Do you have any books in this house that aren’t incredibly boring?” Vergil asked offhandedly, looking at the books but not really paying attention to them.
Magnolia shook her head slightly as she pruned one of her plants, her back to him. “Terribly sorry, darling. I thought you liked your books the way you like your personality.”
Vergil wasn’t sure if he should be insulted or entertained by her witty remarks. She was truly the queen of sarcastic comebacks. In all the years that he’d known her, Vergil had never been able to go toe to toe with her in regards to witty comebacks. Not that he had been trying to in the first place. Being the eldest son of Sparda, Vergil liked to think he was above such things, but depending on who you asked, they might say that that was a load of bullshit and that deep down he did actually possess a sense of humor.
After coming to the conclusion that simply opting to ignore her statement was probably the best thing he could do from a self preservation standpoint, he grabbed the first reasonably interesting book he could find and firmly planted himself into one of the nearby chairs. Magnolia continued to prune her strange looking plants, clearly focused on her craft. While he knew a passable amount about the flora and fauna that was native to the Underworld, the vast majority of what grew in her indoor greenhouse was totally unfamiliar to him.
“Dante nearly touched a cluster of Daturademonica while we were down in the underworld a little while ago. It’s a wonder that he’s still alive.” Vergil said casually as he leafed through the pages of one of her botanical encyclopedias. While the vast majority of the plants in the book would be foreign to even the most experienced botanists, they were average everyday specimens to those who were more supernaturally inclined. It couldn’t hurt to outfit himself with more knowledge on the subject. Such information might have been useful to him during his extended stay in the underworld. More than once he’d nearly consumed (or actually consumed) less than edible flora and fauna in an attempt to provide sustenance for himself. Not being poisoned would have been a nice to have in an environment so hellbent on ending his miserable existence.
Suddenly, Vergil didn’t miss his time in the underworld at all.
“I take it that what happened to Redgrave City was your doing, then? I thought as much. Either that, or your return was the most unfortunate case of fortuitous timing that I’ve ever seen.” She stepped away from the table she was working at and gave Vergil a serious yet solemn look as if she were mourning the loss of something dear to her.” But regardless, I’m glad that you both made it back safely. I won’t ask or even pretend to understand why you do anything that you do, Vergil. All I can do is try to help when things go awry.”
Vergil shifted slightly, crossing his legs in relative discomfort as she walked past him and towards the stairs. She sat her tools down and gestured for Vergil to follow her before descending the stairs. He watched her go for a moment before opting to follow her, taking a moment to return the book to its proper place on the shelf where he’d found it. He then started down the stairs after her, catching up rather quickly as she stopped to open the door to the room that V was located in. Much to his surprise, she stopped for a moment and did a noticeable doubletake before practically skipping back into the room, clearly excited about something.
Curiosity piqued, Vergil ventured into the room and was nearly as surprised as Magnolia was to see that V was no longer asleep. The young summoner in question was now seated with his back against the wall, looking practically as tired as he had when he’d fallen asleep a few days prior. Vergil was curious to know why he seemingly hadn’t improved much in the time he’d spent unconscious, but the fact that he had finally woken up and was no longer bleeding profusely was enough for him. At least for the time being. Vergil knew that the time for answers wasn’t far off, and as such, he was willing to wait just a little bit longer for that time to arrive.
As the two baffled onlookers made their way into the room, V eyed them quietly. He hadn’t felt as weak as he did in that moment since he’d been resurrected a short while ago. His head was foggy and the temptation to simply go back to sleep was strong, but he knew that doing so wasn’t advisable. If the looks on Vergil and Magnolias faces were anything to go by, he’d been asleep for a while longer than he’d originally intended.
“I suppose it’s reasonable to guess that I’ve been asleep for sometime now.” Vergil said horsley, taking a moment to clear his throat. It was almost as if his throat and lungs were glued together.” How long have I been unconscious? The last thing I remember was talking to Nero in the bathroom while you were tending to my injuries. After that, there’s nothing.”
Magnolia nodded. “That makes sense considering the fact that you passed out shortly after. Well, you sort of just collapsed. It’s still unclear what happened exactly.” She gestured towards the room they were in, firmly planting her hand on her hip.” I asked Nero to bring you in here after that. Keep the change of clothes. The ones you had on are definitely not going to do you any good anymore. There isn’t enough bleach in existence to get demonic residue, blood, and dirt out of something like that. It’s a wonder your hair stays so white.”
For a moment, V wondered if this was what it was like to be scolded by an angry mother. He had no experience with such matters, but hearing her describe how hard it would be to get stains out of his clothing brought to mind the stereotypical ads he so often saw on billboards, magazines, and television ads. It made him wonder for a moment if the kindly woman that stood before him had any immediate family of her own; any children that came to visit from time to time. Perhaps asking her in the future would be a worthwhile use of his free time.
“I couldn’t tell you. It just sort of stays the way it is.” V said with a quiet shrug, his gaze turning towards the large window his bed was positioned in front of. Although the fog had yet to dissipate, white light pierced the glass and filled the room with much needed light.” ...I attempted to dye it once when I was younger. The results were… unsatisfactory to say the least. Apparently my hair is somewhat hydrophobic, at least as far as artificial pigment is concerned.” Vergil resisted the urge to shake his head in a mixture of amusement and bewilderment. The idea of altering his hair color had never crossed his mind in the many years that he had been alive, even if that might have caused him significantly less trouble. Apparently the white hair that ran in their family was quite the dead giveaway to any demon that had ever met their father. So just the entire underworld.
“Why did you attempt to do so in the first place?” Vergil inquired, his back against the wall nearest to the door. At this point, he was genuinely curious. Had V been going through some sort of rebellious faze and decided that he needed to change things up? That was the only reason he could think of off the top of his head. Perhaps it was simply beyond him to understand why his oldest son did most of the things that he did. They had lived different lives and gone down different paths. All he could do now was hope for the best.
Much to his surprise, V looked somewhat taken aback by the question. The younger white haired man looked away from both of them for a moment, seemingly contemplating something that he found unpleasant. Magnolia glanced at Vergil for a moment, a questioning look on her face. She got the distinct feeling that whatever he was about to say wasn’t good.
“There were several aspects of who I was when I was growing up that didn’t sit right with the people around me. I had the misfortune of being a relatively low energy child who was both left handed and seemingly cursed with an unusual hair color.” V paused for a moment, repressing some of the memories that that statement had caused to surface.” At one point when I was at the precipice of becoming a teenager… I ran away from the place I was forced to call home. Changing my most noticeable feature seemed like a good idea at the time. Thankfully, the need to do so never arose. I don’t believe they ever bothered looking for me. I get the impression they would have been glad that I was gone. And I’ve never gone back to prove myself wrong.”
A strange mixture of emotions hit Vergil as he contemplated the concept of experiencing such a fundamental level of rejection. Although Dante drove him crazy at times when they were children, the idea of running away from home had never occurred to him. For V, someone he considered to be quite level headed and wary of his surroundings to do something so extreme… he must have faced an unprecedented amount of adversity.
In that moment, a look of heartbroken sympathy crossed Magnolia’s face as she tried to grasp the gravity of what V had just said. What terrible things had he experienced in his youth that had led him to such despair? Had she known that V was in such a state, she would have happily helped him without a moment’s notice. It would have been her pleasure to give him somewhere safe to go. This was awful.
Suddenly as if to break the tension in the room, the front door opened and two sets of footsteps could be heard coming towards them. Before anyone could react, Dante appeared in the doorway with Trish at his side, the two seemingly eager to share something with them. And whatever that something was, everyone present was willing to believe that it wasn’t good.
“Vergil... we might have a problem.”
(-~-)
I Have a headcanon that V is a lefty because of how he does some of the things in the game. Also, the idea that both he and Nero are lefties is really interesting to me due to the odds of something like that happening. As for his childhood… all in good time. Slowly but surely we shall see more of it. The curse of Sparda family childhoods is alive and well! See you all on Friday. This next part is going to be a doozy!

Ari, talk to me about Conduit!!!
YELLS okay!!
So I was preparing to write something for a Certain Someone’s birthday (you dork) and while I was struggling to come up with a decent concept I knew I wanted to write KakPucci because at this point that had just become, like. Our Thing
So my coworker was new to the area at the time and wanted to explore some of the nearby college towns and get some drinks, and I don’t really frequent bars so we brought my brother along so he could show us some of the watering holes in the area. We settled on a place called The Tunnel Bar - which, no surprise, was built under an old railway station that isn’t in use anymore. It leans really heavy into the “speakeasy” aesthetic and mostly serves martinis, which I don’t usually drink. So Idiot Me went for the thing that sounded the most palatable at the time:
So that’s tequila, cherry liqueur, - I didn’t know what the shit green chartreuse was but apparently it’s 1) an herbal liqueur that was invented by French monks 2) featured heavily in The Great Gatsby, which is something I didn’t know until literally a minute ago 3) strong as fuck. Plus lime and brandied cherry. It’s called “The Last Laugh” for a reason.
The drink I got was, I swear, Hierophant radium green, and within ten minutes I was hunched in one of those cushy armchairs, drunkenly scribbling down descriptions of the bar because damn it, I didn’t care if Prohibition-era work didn’t make sense in context, I knew I wanted to set the story in a bar like this. (Later on that night I got lost in a one-stall bathroom, and had an argument with a Great Pyrenees that tried to eat my pizza - but that’s not part of this commentary.) Along the way I learned a bunch of random trivia (something that just tends to happen when you write for Kakyoin), such as:
green is a super-gay color
Plato has frustrating opinions about societal roles
people tend to glance toward exits when they’re lying
Oscar Wilde wrote some really sad “children’s stories”
having Nietzsche on your bookshelf doesn’t mean you know what the fuck he’s talking about, without the use of Wikipedia
when you put two informants in the same room things tend to get flirtatious no matter what
and so on.
I decided on throwing the Chicago Tribune in there at the last minute because I was worried New York would be overdone, but if this were ever to expand into a larger AU (which, I don’t know- it might someday ;v; ) I’d be at a disadvantage since I know next to nothing about Chicago. Something to consider, but not something to panic over.
I think my favorite line to write is either the bit about “girls engaged in their balancing acts” or the description of the cherry at the end. Other than that, it’s really hard to pick a “favorite” bit. There’s just a great deal of chemistry between these two I never expected to appreciate, so every time I have an opportunity to do so I always have a great time. ;v;
ANYWAY thank you for sending a specific story, I’m really happy I got to share this, and if there’s anyone who hasn’t read this story but likes niche rarepair fic you can read Conduit here.

WELCOME TO XAVIER’S, KIM JIHOON !
… loading statistics. currently aged twenty-three, entering first semester of xavier’s in seoul, south korea. decrypting files… mutant has the following records: strength +5, durability+5, agility +5, dexterity +6, intelligence +4. currently, he is classified under tier omega.
BACKGROUND.
i. the frozen march battered by grey skies and harsh snowstorms, finally pulls back as he takes his first breath. his mother likes to tease him, telling him that his first smile carried with it their first taste of sunshine in months.
ii. his parents are opposites, two halves of the same coin. his mother is soft, as gentle as in the incoming tide. his father, a brash and loud military man, as pulsing as the thunderstorm he carries beneath his skin. they are a family of fishermen, spanning back generations and it’s evident early on that he’s too delicate, too fragile for the toils the sea demands of him.
the sea lives in his blood, and so he learns to adapt as best as he can. summer months are spent fighting back seasickness brought on by the tossing and turning of the boat at the mercy of the waves. he learns to hold his breath and fight against the curling of his stomach when standing by this mother in their stall at the fish market.
iii. the kim siblings are a year and a handful of months apart in age. but he, and everyone else, notices very early on the distinct differences between. his brother is younger but he’s clearly been blessed by lady luck, and everything he touches shines bright and golden. he’s the apple of his father’s eye and jihoon can’t help but to be filled with jealousy. for everything that jihoon fails at, his brother excels; the ridge between them growing ever wider. his mother tries her best to quell the arguments, to soothe hurt feelings and bruises. but his father, he encourages it, insists that sibling rivalry will make them stronger in the end.
but while jihoon loves his family, loves his brother, it does nothing but sews the seeds of contempt deeper inside of him.
iv. and because as fate would have it, nothing is ever as simple as it seems. for as hard as he works to try and live up to his family’s expectations, struggling not to collapse under the weight of the world on his shoulders, life and fate throws him a curveball.
in the summer of his 13th year after an intense argument with his father, while struggling to remember to breathe he catches the sight of blue sparks of pure electricity dancing along the small slopes of his fingers. he panics, fighting to stop whatever is happening to him, his voice catching in his throat as he shakes his hands and fights not to scream. with a chest tight with something and too quick of a movement, and the energy is moving up and out, frying electronics in his room and shutting down the power for the entire house.
jihoon learns quickly to play dumb, to keep whatever this is a secret.
v. but secrets never last forever. at 16, jihoon buckles under the weight of the future and worries of disappointing his father. for as perfect as his brother is, jihoon is far from it. his mother quietly worries from the sidelines, asks him to give up in only so many words, but never steps in to defend her sons against her husband. and whatever lies they’ve been playing at with their happy family routine are ruined in the span of a night.
it happens on a saturday night. his parents pack up and head to his grandparents for the weekend. he spends the night alone in the house with his younger brother, making sure to avoid pushing each other’s buttons. but what should have been an easy choice in what to have for dinner, ends up in a screaming match, a brawl right there on the kitchen floor. and jihoon, upset and not thinking, loses control for just a second. face red with anger and tears of frustration, he feels his brother’s fist collide with the skin of his back and he lets go, sparks emanating from him, shocking his brother, and colliding with the surrounding appliances. it happens in an instance, his brother drops the grip he had on his shirt, his hair and suddenly the house is flickering. something somewhere, old and ancient buzzes and shortly bursts into flames.
vi. jihoon remembers the look of fear on his brother’s face. he remembers the confusion among the firefighters and neighbors. he remembers huddling beneath blankets with his brother on the front lawn, waiting in the dark for their parents to arrive. he remembers the look of fury in his father’s body language as he slams the car door, the anger clear cut across his face. he remembers the words ‘killer’ and ‘monster’ savagely falling from the lips of his parents, terrified at the person they thought was their son. jihoon remembers his father ushering his younger away into the safety of the car and his mother shoving her wallet at him in her flurry to follow after them.
vii. 17 and homeless, jihoon struggles to provide for himself on the harsh streets of seoul. he meets a thousand strangers, some sympathetic to the hungry looking boy with the small frame, but most avoid his eyes, avoiding coming into contact with him. and then there are those that he finds, just like him but different.
there’s a whispering of a place out there, for people like him. and jihoon feels like he can finally breathe for the first time in forever.
MUTATION.
it is the ability to create, shape, and manipulate electricity from the movement of charged particles. it comes to life in the form of energy released primarily through his hands, using his limbs to as a conduit to create or re-direct pre-existing electricity.
STRENGTHS.
jihoon is able to charge objects with a brush of his fingers, leaving them charged with little volts of energy, heated, or to act as a conductor for more electricity.
with a quick flick of his wrists, jihoon is able to physically expel the electricity through the form of a blue bolts toward his intended targets. allowing him to deliver a rather nasty shock to enemies or to be used to physically pull and move objects towards him at short ranges.
jihoon is also able to generate small bursts of electricity from his hand to propel himself forward small distances. he typically only uses this ability in pursuit of targets and in areas with large expanses of space.
WEAKNESSES.
water is especially deadly for jihoon. the more water, the less control of his ability he has, leaving everyone including himself susceptible to being shocked. and if he’s the one who is soaked, it shorts him out leaving him completely unable to use his ability at all.
objects that he touches to pass on his electricity must be made of certain materials such as metal or small bodies of water, which he can only use to move electricity through.
storms are particularly lethal for jihoon. he attracts lightning and one bolt with more volts of electricity than he can handle and it could potentially blow him up from the inside out.
jihoon must be in peak physical condition to generate any type of electricity. if he’s sick, tired, or injured, he won’t be able to produce even the tiniest of sparks.
jihoon’s ability demands a lot of energy when used. because of this, he’s only able to generate so much before he’s left drained and in those instances, he’s prone to fainting.
although jihoon can produce electricity from his own body, it only reaches a small distance of 152 centimeters, anything past that will be unaffected by his range of limitations.

Demigods and Semi-devils, Chapter V (XII)
Duan Yu sat on the edge of the bed, waiting patiently as he ran through the steps in his mind. Then he heard footsteps and the click of a lock. The servant came in, laden with plates. Duan Yu walked over slowly. Then without warning, he overturned the plates with a clatter, sending rice and vegetables raining down on the man’s head.
“Aiya!” the servant cried. With three quick steps, Duan Yu was racing towards the door.
But Yu Guangbiao had been standing guard outside, and hearing the servant’s cry, had sprinted into the house. The doorway was narrow, and both men crashed into each other. Duan Yu moved from the “Enthusiasm” stance to the “Contemplation” stance, recovering quickly and darting around Yu Guangbiao. His left foot landed on the doorstep.
This threw him off completely. The instructions in the scroll hadn’t explained what to do if the user’s foot landed on a doorstep, putting his feet at different heights. He stumbled, moving into the stance known as “Holding Together”. But unfortunately, this meant he trod heavily on Yu Guangbiao’s foot.
What do you do if you tread on someone’s foot, and the person yells with pain and anger? Duan Yu had no clue. The nymph of the Luo River, soaring lightly as a startled swan and gracefully as a dragon in flight as she tripped across the waves, would probably not have encountered any doorsteps or stray feet to step on. Duan Yu completely lost his head in his panic. He felt a hand close around his left wrist. Yu Guangbiao was dragging him back into the house.
His luck had turned, and all his days of careful planning had come down to this. Silently cursing his situation, Duan Yu tried to pry Yu Guangbiao’s fingers off with his right hand, struggling all the while. But despite all his effort, the other man’s hand was still clamped tightly around his wrist.
Then, Yu Guangbiao let out a small cry and slackened his grip. He had felt a sudden weakness in his fingers, and hurriedly stretched them before clamping down again. The moment he did so, however, he felt the strange ache again.
“Shit!” Yu Guangbiao growled, tightening his grip even further. As he did so, the aching weakness spread to his own wrist and arm. In trying to make Yu Guangbiao loosen his grip, Duan Yu had inadvertently pressed his right thumb to the man’s thumb, so that their acupoints were touching. Internal energy was flowing in an unbroken channel from Yu Guangbiao to the younger man. The more he tightened his grip, the more energy he lost.
Duan Yu had no idea what was happening, but could tell that his opponent’s grip was alternately slackening and tightening. If he managed to gather his strength, he could conceivably pull away and escape. In that moment of crisis, moving his thumb from its current position never crossed his mind.
When Duan Yu had been hit in the chest, a negligible amount of energy had entered his Danzhong Acupoint. He had used it as the basis to clear the channels of his Lung and Ren Meridians. Now, the other man’s internal energy was slowly flowing along these paths into Duan Yu’s body. This was the meaning of what had been written in the scroll, about a hundred rivers flowing towards the ocean.
If both men had not been exerting themselves and merely touched their thumbs, nothing would have happened. Duan Yu, who did not know the Divine Art of the Northern Darkness, could not have sapped Yu Guangbiao’s strength. But locked in a frenzied struggle, with Yu Guangbiao already having inadvertently transferred some energy to Duan Yu, things were different. Like a cup being filled with wine, Duan Yu simply had no choice about the matter.
Yu Guangbiao had started off with far more internal energy than Duan Yu. Had he realised what was happening and immediately let go, Duan Yu would merely have escaped without a scratch. But he was not about to let the pretty boy go after having been put on guard duty. He gripped Duan Yu harder with his weakening arm, but soon found that one hand was not enough to hold the young man back. Yu Guangbiao grabbed Duan Yu’s left arm with his right hand. His internal energy flowed out even more quickly now. Before long, half of his store had flowed into Duan Yu’s body.
Neither man was willing to budge, and Yu Guangbiao’s internal energies were soon at a low ebb. Duan Yu was now the stronger, and the flow of energy quickened until it was a raging torrent, as though a river had burst its banks. There was no way that Yu Guangbiao could hold back the tide. His only hope was to release Duan Yu and flee. But Duan Yu had his thumb in a firm grip, and struggle though he did, Yu Guangbiao could not break free. The victim was fast becoming the victor, although Duan Yu did not know this. In his muddled state, his desperate attempts to pry Yu Guangbiao’s fingers off him had somehow turned into him hanging on for dear life.
On the verge of collapse, Yu Guangbiao cried out: “Brother Wu, Wu Guangsheng! Come here! Hurry!”
Wu Guangsheng was in the outhouse. Hearing his sworn brother’s cries, he hurried out, holding up his pants with both hands.
“The little fool is trying to escape. I can’t... I can’t hold him.”
Wu Guangsheng let go of his trousers and dashed forward to stop Duan Yu. But Yu Guangbiao cried out again: “No, pull me away from him!” His voice sounded like a sob.
“Right away!” Wu Guangsheng said, grabbing the other man by the shoulders. “Are you hurt?” he asked, knowing that a scholarly young man like Duan Yu would not have been a match for someone of Yu Guangbiao’s calibre. At that moment, he felt a strange ache in his arms. Focusing, he channelled his internal energy to that spot, only to feel again the aching numbness. Duan Yu had completely sapped Yu Guangbiao’s energy, and was now sapping Wu Guangsheng’s. The other man’s body served as a conduit between the two.
Duan Yu had felt Yu Guangbiao’s grip on his wrist tighten when Wu Guangsheng came to his aid. Panicking, he worked even harder to pry off Yu Guangbiao’s fingers. Of course, this made Wu Guangsheng feel weak and numb all over. “What’s going on?” Wu Guangsheng yelled. But he did not let go.
Seeing the three men locked in a tussle, with Yu Guangbiao’s and Wu Guangsheng’s faces growing paler and paler, the servant who had brought in the food started calling for help. Clambering out of the door over the men, who shouted: “Help, help, that pretty boy called Duan is getting away!”
Two men from the Boundless Sword immediately rushed over, with three more hot on their heels. “What’s happened? Where is he?” they asked. Duan Yu was almost smothered by the other two men, and they had not been able to spot him at first.
Yu Guangbiao was panting hard, unable to speak. The majority of Wu Guangsheng’s energy had also been drained, and he was only able to say breathlessly: “This fellow has...has gotten hold of Brother Yu. Help...help him.”
Two men instantly leaped forward, each grabbing one of Wu Guangsheng’s arms. But the moment they pulled, they felt their own arms weakening. Their energy was, of course, flowing to Duan Yu as well. With the little bit of energy he had drawn from them, added to the energy he had already taken from Yu Guangbiao and Wu Guangsheng, Duan Yu’s inner strength surpassed that of both men. Feeling their arms weakening, the men worked to channel more energy to those parts of their body. These went straight to Duan Yu, as though they were shoving presents into his hands.
The more energy Duan Yu accumulated, the faster he was able to drain the energy of others. At first, his newfound strength had accumulated like tiny droplets of water. Now, they flowed like streams.
The remaining three men gaped at the spectacle. “What kind of joke is this?” one asked. “Are you playing at acrobatics?” He reached out to grab one of the men, only to find that he was unable to pull away. “It’s a trap! There’s something odd going on!” he cried. The last two men tried to pull him away, and succeeded in moving the other men slightly. But even as they did so, they felt the strange weakness as strength flowed out of their arms.

On January 24, 1916 a man from Hastings, Ontario enlisted with the 93rd Battalion, so beginning his military career.
We have one postcard and three letters from his overseas service, and they give us the opportunity to look a bit deeper into the war experience of Private John Edward Parker (reg. no. 195573).[i] Private Parker was a native of England, being born in the Lincoln, England region on August 10, 1889.
Having joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force with the 93rd Battalion Parker was sent to England with his battalion in July 1916 and sent a brief postcard to his mother upon his arrival in England.

Mrs J Parker Hastings Ontario Canada
Dear Mother,
Just a few lines hoping to find all well and to le you know that we landed cross safe. From J Parker
The short card, written one day prior to the R.M.S. Empress of Britain’s arrival at Liverpool, was a quick note to his mother letting her know he has arrived safely. It appears he wrote this card in preparation of landing in England with the realization he may not having time to write for some time as the battalion would be on the move to its training base and would begin the next stage of training in preparation for service on the Continent with the rest of the Canadian Corps.
Parker would soon find, in a space of 2-months, that he would be placed in a battalion that was not from his geographic region. Instead of a battalion from his region, such as the 21st Battalion – a battalion raised in Kingston, Ontario – Parker was assigned to the 18th Battalion, based out of Western/Southern Ontario. Arriving October 3, 1916, Parker would fight with the battalion until his second wounding on October 10, 1918.
The next communication from Private Parker is a letter written on February 28, 1917.

Feb 28th 1917
Dear Sisters,
Received your letter and pleased to hear that you were all well. I have not had a chance to answer it last week as we were in the line.
We are having some better weather now not quite so cold but mud and water up to the knees so you can imagine what it is like to walk through.
We are on a different part of the front now and we cannot buy a candle or any thing to eat either love nor money but we are making the best of it but we will be pleased when we can say we have done our bit and on our way home to a country that is worth living in, not a country like this.
We received the parcel with [the tabbles] and the sausages it was the first one for a long time. We are not getting very much mail for the last few weeks. We got a small parcel from Mrs. Markham last night and I tell you it came in alright but it did not last us very long. Well I don’t think have any more to tell you so I think I must come to a close. Hoping this will find you all in the best of health as it leaves us so at present so will close with love to all from your brother.
Pte. J E Parker
Parker had been in the field for five months. He joined the Battalion at the Somme and experienced some of the toughest action the 18th would endure. After the Somme, the Canadian Corps was moved to the Vimy Sector at the end of February 1917. The Battalion had moved out of the front-line on the 26th into the rear as Brigade Support and Private Parker had a chance to write home from his billet at one of three “shelters” (named Vistual, Rhine, Maison).
The letter aligns with the 18th Battalion War diary as it had been in the line prior to the letter. It had been a busy tour with the Battalion finding the trenches, “…in poor condition in several parts… This sector in very muddy condition necessitating continual work by the battalion to keep in repair.[ii] The tour in the lines was not without tragedy as the Battalion suffered two members killed in action and four wounded. It also relates the state of the trenches as Parker shares that the trenches had, “…mud and water up to the knees…”
He gives us insight to the nature of the rear area being isolated from larger population centers offering more opportunity to purchase supplies as the Battalion is based in a rural area, approximately 8 kilometres from Arras. He and his mates cannot acquire some of the comforts of home and the basic necessities, with candles being in high demand as the Battalion is stationed in three of the sub-terranean “subways” used by the CEF to shelter and hide troops from the German reconnaissance resources. Private Parker obviously prefers Canada to this part of France.
In closing, he relates how important a parcel from home was for him and one gets a sense of the value of such mail as Mrs. Markham’s “small parcel” did not last him and his compatriots very long. It was quite common for soldiers to share the contents of their parcels and add variety and interest to their diet from the contents of such parcels.
The next letter, dated December 22, 1917, is written after the battles at Vimy Ridge, Hill 70, and Passchendaele. Since the last letter, Private Parker’s service life has been eventful, being wounded on May 6, 1917, at Willeraval. On the night of May 5/6 the Battalion made a relief, “…under very heavy shellfire,” perhaps which led to Private Parker being wounded in the right arm. A month later he was discharged to duty with his Battalion. The nature of his wound was treated in the rear areas and did not require formal hospitalization at Etaples, France or over in England. Parker was promoted to the rank of Lance-Corporal on July 10, 1917, in response to the promotion of another soldier of the Battalion (C.W. Boyd, reg. no. 455590). It appears that complications from his GSW would lead to Parker suffering inflammation of the connective tissues of his right-hand. Five days of treatment off the line at the end of July 1917 resulted in the return of the newly minted Lance-Corporal Parker to the Battalion.

Some Where in France
Dear Sister,
Received your letter pleased to know that you were at the time of your writing. How do you like been in Peterboro[iii]? Is it better than Norwood? You said that you told Gertie to write. I had a letter from her yesterday. I have had leave to England and had a fine time. I hear that Roy Parker has been trying to get an exemption so that he will not have to come over here. Well Annie it will soon be Christmas and we look like been over here for a while yet. I hope this is the last Christmas for us in France. Hope we will be home before the next one. I supposes Lilian is living with you by what I heard from them at home. Well we are having some very sharp weather over here. I suppose you are having about the same over in Canada. [Ivey] said in her letter that she was going to live in Peterboro after Christmas. I don’t think that they will get along together. Her and Becky. Well I will close hoping this mite [sic] find you both in the best of health as it leaves me so at present [no I write run at] up with best love to both from your brother John.
2nd Can Div Wing CCRC[iv] France
There appears to be some confusion about where this letter was written. Taking the service records as a true representation of this soldier’s service from its entries for Parker he should still be with his battalion and this letter would then have been written at Febvin-Palfart where the Battalion was billeted in barns and homes in that community.[v] The Battalion had been out of the line for since December 13, 1917, and had been involved in voting in the Canadian General Elections on December 14 and then a series of parades and exercises until their move to Febvin-Palfart, where they became more serious about the training in the daily syllabi. But the closing of the letter clearly shows that Parker is detached from the Battalion and with the Canadian Corps Reinforcement Camp.[vi] This discrepancy between the date of the letter and the acknowledgement in his service record of his attachment with the Canadian Corps Reinforcement Camp was 2-months. His service record did not acknowledge his service with this unit until February 2, 1918.
This letter relates family gossip. We know that he is writing a sister by the name of Annie and she has moved from the village of Norwood[vii] to the town of Peterborough. Parker had a leave in England, though his service records do not, oddly, reflect this. He has concern for a possible member of his family, a Roy Parker, trying to get an exemption from the military. This part of the letter is illuminating as the recent election had conscription for the war effort as a major issue and the majority of serving soldiers agreed with this program. If Roy was a family member, then Lance-Corporal Parker, as a serving soldier, might have reason to be disappointed in his relative.
As he was writing so close to Christmas, he expresses a common sentiment about being ‘home for Christmas’, which would be an oft-expressed sentiment of the men of the Canadian Corps throughout the war. He would have to suffer one more Christmas overseas before going home.
Having participated in the Battles at Hill 70 and Passchendaele, he was on the roll of the Canadian Corps Reinforcement Camp at Lilliers, France on February 2, 1918. It is unknown what his role was there, but one of the roles that Parker could fill, especially with his combat experience, was that of a credible trainer of technology and tactics. In addition, as this camp established reinforcements for each battalion he would be a conduit helping to prepare and familiarize these new men to the culture of the “Fighting 18th”. He had valuable combat experience after 1-year and 3-months of active service through some of the hardest battles the Canadian Corps had experienced, and adding to his credibility, had been promoted in the field. This assignment lasted until August 29, 1918, when he was despatched back to the 18th Battalion.
Attachment of service record. Note that it does not show the date Parker left for the CCRC but does not that he in on the roll as of February 2, 1918.
The third, and last letter of the article, confirms that Parker was stationed at the Canadian Corps Reinforcement Camp prior to his service record’s entry to that fact. The entry for February 2, 1918, acknowledges that he is “on the roll” of the Canadian Corps Reinforcement Camp but does not note a date of departure from the 18th Battalion to the Canadian Corps Reinforcement Camp.

Dear Sisters,
Received your welcome letter and please to hear that you were well at the time of your writing. I had a letter from Fanny and she said that she was not feeling well she had an awful cold by what she said. She said she was lonely when I left but she had got over it she is expecting Earnest [sic] home on leave any time now. I received your parcel alright and [it] was ok and now I must thank you for it.
We are having some very sharp weather over here but not very much snow. It seems to be turning a little milder today. You said about R P[viii] not wanting to come over here to help as he must have cold feet or he would been over here a long time ago. I had a fine letter from E sister the other day, and she said she was well and hoped that I would soon being going on leave again. Well I have no news to tell you only that I wish the war was over and we could be back again to home. Well I will close hoping this will find you both in the best of health as it leaved me so at present. Will close with love to both from your brother J E P.
18TH Canadians BTN CCRC Wing France
In the new year, Lance-Corporal Parker writes his sisters a quick letter. He thanks them for a parcel sent to him and relates some family news about an ill relative and his hopes for another leave and the war to end. He refers to an “R P” having “cold feet” regarding his enlistment into the Canadian Forces. It is a brief letter that touches on some of the most common themes in wartime letters: leave, parcels, and a wish the war would end.
For Lance-Corporal John Edward Parker, the war would end. But only after returning to the 18th Battalion as The Hundred Days began during which he joined the Battalion “in the field” on September 3, 1918, at Beaurains, France while the Battalion was in Brigade (H.Q.) Reserve. Upon joining his Battalion Parker served until he was wounded again on October 10, 1918, during action near the L’Escaut Canal. That day’s butcher bill resulted in the Battalion suffering 6 other ranks killed and 70 wounded. Lance-Corporal Parker was one of those wounded with a GSW to his left leg (thigh) and he was admitted to No. 32 Stationary Hospital at Wimereux where his journey to “Blighty” and home would begin. His wound would heal relatively quickly, and he was transferred to Kinmel Park Camp and then returned to Canada and was discharged from service at Kingston, Ontario on February 10, 1919, and returned to Norwood and his family.
Lance-Corporal Parker’s experience in the Canadian Army resulted in being wounded twice, the first a minor “flesh” wound and the second more serious wounding that resulted in his transfer to England. By October 1918 the end was in sight for the war and the tempo of combat had increased. The last action Parker was involved in contrasted with this first wounding. There he was involved in static trench warfare. In 1918 the nature of the war had opened up and the combat was more fluid and dynamic. His letters home enhance our understanding of his service and, to this author’s experience, shows one of the few examples where the diligent record-keeping of the service records of a Canadian soldier had a gap when Parker’s service record did not accurately record the start of his assignment with the Canadian Corps Reinforcement Camp.

End Notes:
[i] These letters were posted at the 18th Battalion Facebook Group. The images of the letters are at the end of this article and have been transcribed by this author for clarity. This is to assist the audience with reading the letters but to get a true feel of the text please refer to and read the images.
[ii] This entry is an interesting aside and may indicate frustration in the maintenance of the line by the proceeding unit though the War Diary does not indicate what troops held these trenches before the 4th Brigade took them over. It appears that the 5th Canadian Brigade was the unit relieved by the 4th Canadian Infantry Brigade.
[iii] Common spelling for the now City of Peterborough, Ontario, Canada.
[iv] Canadian Corps Reinforcement Camp. This camp was established to channel soldiers for the Canadian Base Depot (CBD) at Etaples to the next stage of training and preparation for combat. From the CBD to the CCRC the soldiers would be moved closer to the front line. In the summer of 1917, the CCRC would hold for each battalion 100 reinforcements. These men would be further trained and prepared for the next assignment with an active unit. 10% of all other units (i.e. engineers, pioneers) would be held as reinforcements at this camp. The camp was moved in June 1918 to Aubin St. Vaast and the establishment of each battalion for reinforcements was increased to 200 other ranks and 10 officers.
[v] Mostly likely the officers were billeted in the homes, and the other ranks in the barns.
[vi] The Canadian Corps Reinforcement Camp was first established at Lilliers in the Summer of 1917 and then moved in June 1918 to Aubin St. Vaast.
[vii] It appears that the family moved from Hastings to Norwood, Ontario sometime after Parker joined the 93rd Battalion. He notes in his discharge papers that his proposed residence will be at Norwood.
[viii] Possibly referring to Roy Parker from the previous letter, dated December 22, 1917.
“…we cannot buy a candle or any thing to eat…”: Letters from Lance-Corporal Parker On January 24, 1916 a man from Hastings, Ontario enlisted with the 93rd Battalion, so beginning his military career.

agonies III
I.
South of Seoth-Renthal. Far South of the Claim. I think of the cities I have heard of in the Far West. Timore. York. Ianpol. Lombos, the dead center of the Vast Devouring, the deepest pit that still spews forth demonkind by the hundreds. York still holds their greatest legions, but Lombos is where demons begin their entry into the newly formed Lands-of-Men.
The Great Deconsecration continues. They say the demons have built elaborate pyramids and cruel, jagged towers of metal on the ruins of the second age. The Infernal Powers hold their twisted senates and mad congresses in scorn of man’s law.
Viyis-Azaal, Vile-King of Timore, it is said, has taken to sewing the heads of men to the bodies of wolves, and setting them to rut with each other. I don’t remember where I heard that.
II.
The wound on my arm still burns. I have water, given freely from the Church exchange. This is the furthest I’ve traveled in quite some time. Life near the Claim was harsh, but I had my peace. My prayers did not bring shambling ruin upon me.
Out here, in the deeper parts of the frontier, I must pray silently, or under the very apex of the red sun, lest I be heard by oratidemons, blessing-hunters. The conduit of man’s communication with the creator can be eavesdropped. They feel the holy presence of something more real than reality, it is said. What innately they feel the urge to flee they train themselves to naturally seek.
I consider that paradox below the blasted remains of a waystation. Sacrifice-tiles litter one of the walls, hanging above the waxy remains of a dozen candles. Eat one nailed to the wall with a long spike and a finger bone. Some bones still have rotted muscle clinging to them. Others look like they’ve been here for a hundred years.
III.
it is impossible to know how much time lapsed between the ages, the Church-Librarians told me, giving me Convent’s Histories, giving me Past Principalities. The first age is unknowable, only the most minute fragments remain. Deluges. Prophets. Angels. Legions. The second age, we live in the broken shadow of their world.
Ten thousand thousand years the demons had us in their grip, the scholars tell the rectors, the rectors tell the supreme fathers, the supreme fathers tell the unifier. The unifier speaks once a year, from the Conclave. Mine-slaves from the Claim, menial priests of lower orders, professor-priests of the templars, remnanti scholars, flog-nuns, pain-sisters, guildfathers, holy warlords, all manner come from across the scattered lands to hear him speak. When I was still in chains, my slavemother took me to see the unifier. He was an old man, with a clean beard of brilliant white, plaited in finely crafted knots.
IV.
I don’t remember what the unifier said. I was too far away to hear anything other than the echoing, screaming chant of the crowd. I saw men sacrificing their children and holding up their entrails. I saw weeping soldiers dig their eyes from their sockets and hold them up blindly to the sky.
Ecstatic relief swept through the crowd as they began their mutilations. I saw the face of hope, then. Salvation. Like my slavemother, I was wracked with sobs of joy. She was stabbing herself in the thigh a sharpened stick. Each thrust into the gored muscle, already thick with splinters, became a sob of joy. I took a brittle rock and struck myself in the forehead with it, splitting my skin and sheeting a side of my face with blood. I knew then the glory, the freedom, of loving the creator, of being one with it. I knew of glory. Of glory.
V.
A brief quiet in the red night time. Then true night, utter blackness, falls when the red sun passes behind the moon. I hear Brother-of-Vipers, a scaled and immense demon nearly seven hundred feet tall, screaming gibbering curses into the night, trapped as ever in the circle pit. Aerostat priests, in their cruciform-bearing zeppelin-copters, speak of their fear of him, from when he was free, and roaming. He tore one of the first great church zeppelins from the sky and when he bit into it, the flames consumed the entirety of his head.
Flying past the Brother, his head wreathed in flame and burning, falling wreckage. Hell seemed close that day, the old aerostat captain said. Hell is always close, but now, you could reach out and touch it.
It took four hundred divine, saintly men to drive Brother-of-Vipers into the circle pit. Perhaps eleven came back, all touched in some way. Like the aerostat captain, they seem severed from their previous recognition of Hell.
VI.
I walk. A flooded church sits in a sinkhole. Shimmering, dense liquid slides around it. Everyone must have drowned in it. I see corpses, half-sunk. I go to touch the liquid and then hesitate, and flee.
VII.
South is dangerous, the trader caravans say. Typically they have giant, mutant oxen with wild nests of horns covering their whole faces, pulling along giant wagon trains. Salvage from ruins. Hides. Varnishes. Artifacts. Rarely books, though I always ask. Weapons, sometimes. Old, laughable firearms. Unsavory trinkets looted from demon corpses. Empty bottles and full bottles.
South is dangerous, they say. The further south you go, the more risk you run.
I fear most the journey. I have not walked long in many years.
VIII.
The further south, the more likely coming across some marauders. Errant, unsupervised battalions of hell’s bloodthirsty army. War-parties on giant crimson-skinned mastadons. Mutations. The bleak, poisoned creations of freed flesh-farms, unable to live side by side with mankind, now living in pitch caves and squalid communities.
The less likely to find drinkable water, uncorrupted meat.
It rains demon piss, the traders say. I would press a wrist to my mouth to not laugh at such blaspheme.
IX.
I find a cave to sleep in. I place a ward-fetish at the mouth of the cave, and set up silver mines to alert me to intruders.
Inside, I find the usual scraps of travelers. A withered sketch of a sad blonde woman. A tattered copy of the Third Testament, pages scavenged for kindling for a fire. As it is writ in the pages, Book of Accursed 23:12, let no testament’s substance be sacred, for all that is sacred is the flesh of man. Strange metal shackles. A buckskin, bloody shirt with a gaping hole in the side. Fragments of their stories.
The ward-fetish groans. Something outside is near. Something not human.
X.
I see it down the slope, peeking over a jagged curve of rock. For a moment, I am flabbergasted, for it possesses the face of the sad blonde woman I saw drawn in the cave. But the body -- it possesses the body of an overlong, sleek lion, alternatively covered in glistening, chitinous scales. Her face emerges from a tattered blonde mane. The tail looks like a serpent. It -- she? -- does not know I am here, and is merely pacing. I retire back to the cave, where I stare at the sketch.
Now I know why the artist did not draw her body.
XI.
Come a couple hours sleep, it is gone. The ward-fetish is practically humming as I place it back inside my things, furious with unholy perceptions.
Further south I go.

Explanation of “Night in the Woods”; Spoiler alert, Spoilers of the game ahead.
This was maybe one of the best games that I’ve ever experienced, It takes place in a small town of possum springs where the main character Mae is coming home after recently dropping college. The story is brilliant and well put together with the four main characters, Mae, Bea, Greg, and Angus.
But the more and more you play the game you can see some pretty crazy stuff, and the rest of this post is going to be a fan theory on what its about.
Theory
To start off we need to know some background of the town, Possum Springs is a small town in between two valleys, it started out as a mining and farming town until after mysterious events the mines were closed. The people who worked in the mines are actually still alive which tells me that the mine closed rather recently (Like the last thirty years recently), we get an explanation of how the town was found threw the “Harfest” Play. One day two brothers come to a creek after killing and skinning Three Hundred beavers after that a witch came from the woods and cursed the two by making the water poisonous, one brother died and the other soon followed, The witch was confronted by the forest god and was sent into hell where she came from. Some of the people who followed the trappers decided to take the pelts and with them build a new town in this valley, Possum Springs.
The Dreams
Dreams are very important events inside of the game and they start the first couple of nights and last for one week, There were seven dreams so I assume it was one week. At the end of each dream there is a giant creature, with the exception of the fifth night,
First Dream: Giant metal bird sculpture
Second Dream: Giant Bear
Third Dream: Giant Squirrle
Fourth Dream: Giant Lizard
Fifth Dream: Deep growl and a well
Sixth Dream: Giant Egret
Seventh Dream: Giant Cat
as the dreams progress they get a lot more scattered and deluded, they become just a bunch of random shapes, and they all end with the giant cat. The cat explains to Mae what is happening and like Mae she doesn’t under stand, But the cat brings up some interesting points and one phrase above them all,”Monstrous Existence”, The cat explain’s how everyone is just small creature swimming threw a void and how the giant creatures are now climbing out of the hole.
The first dream is Mae beating up the kid at the softball field,
The second is a bear or possibly the pig nosed Cult person who is chasing mae,
The third Is a giant squirrle which I have no clue what means,
The fourth is a Giant lizard which could be the old man accross the street Who I assume is in the cult,
The fifth is the growl of the creature in the whole beneath the well,
The sixth is an egret possibly representing the janitor
And the seventh is the cat Representing I’d like to say the mom, helping Mae threw the Tough time.
All of the creatures could also be the neighbor hood watch old guys, who are the cult leaders.
The Janitor
He is the very first character we meet at the game and we see him at the end of the game, He is always talking about how he needs to fix a door. At the beginning in the bus station he is fixing the front door at the bus station and from what we see He fixed the door. Later on we see him in the hospital after Mae’s accident and He claims that his job is to fix a door, We may pass it off as he just needs to fix the door at the bus stop but he already fixed that door, so that raises a question, What door?
I have a theory that the janitor is actually god, sort of, He seems to show up when ever something big happens to Mae, Her return, her near death, Her growing up, He is around for all of it, and he seems to whats going to happen before it happens, he talks about the future in past tense and tells Pastor K and Mae’s parents that She will be alright, right before Mae wakes up from her coma. So I believe that He is possibly god Or a Ghost.
On the night that Bea Helps Mae they go to the grave yard and in the back ground there is a statue which looks like the janitor.
So maybe the janitor is actually a Ghost which came back to fix the door between the physical Realm and the Ghostly realm.
The Cult
Towards the end of the game the main four chase down what Mae believes to be a ghost who is chasing her and ruining her life, Chasing these people they end up happening upon a cult at the old mine, They begin to chase them and cause Mae’s accident. In the very end The four find them selves going into the mine after them when they here the explanation of what they are. The members of the cult explain that they give good fortune to the town by feeding a ghost in the bottom of a hole, they go on to explain that the Ghost is hungry and that they feed it people who wont be missed, liked Casey and Brutus.
Personally I don’t think that it is a ghost, There is a lot more to it than that, right before we go into the dark dank room with the hole, we can see a pentagram made out of timber supports.
See the Pentagram in the center,
Now Before we dismiss this whole thing as demons I think it might be something else.
The Final conclusion
Have you ever read an H.P. love craft story, maybe not But I’m sure you’ve heard of one of his biggest stories, Call of Cthulhu, It explain’s the story of a man who discovers a relatives death and gets a note from the relative explain how he died and what caused it. I suggest that You read it or watch this video which explains his lore. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Why1NLEfhaM
In basic you can see that the similarities are uncanny. This creature in the bottom of the hole brings nightmares to some people in the town and threatens to destroy the town, so those some people who got these nightmares made a cult to give the creature what it wants to prevent the towns destruction, the souls of the town. One day it speaks to Mae, and gives her a week of dreams to drive her to the brink of insanity, and it works. The creature lured Mae and her friends to the cult that way so the cult can make them into new members and the creature can be fed for another generation. Mean while The janitor,”god”, is attempting to find this creature and take steps to kill it and fix the door between the creature and the people. So he see’s Mae and can see that she is the next one who is getting the nightmares and makes sure that she is alright, that way she can seal the creature into the hole.
The creature Is the witch, and the janitor is the Forest God, Mae is the conduit between the two. The “Harfest” Witch story is explaining what did happen and what will happen. And that’s pretty much it.
Thanks for reading, Comment and re-blog if You like this theory and make sure to have a wonderful day.
Also Thankyou Jacksepticeye for playing this game,
It should also be said that this is just a theory and all facts used are from the perspective of the player and not by the maker of the game.

THE CARTHUSIAN ORDER
BY RAYMUND WEBSTER
Article taken from THE CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA
Transcribed by Brent Flowers
The Carthusian Order
The name is derived from the French chartreuse through the Latin cartusia, of which the English "charterhouse" is a corruption. For the foundation of the order see the article Saint Bruno. The following points will be considered here:
I. The Rule; II. Life of the Monks; III. Organization; IV. Development; V. Present State of the Order; VI. Distinguished Carthusians; VII. English Province; VIII. Carthusian Nuns.
I. THE RULE
We have two accounts of the manner of life of the first Carthusians, the earliest, written by Guibert, Abbot of Nogent, the second by Peter the Venerable, Abbot of Cluny. The former runs as follows: "The church stands upon a ridge . . . thirteen monks dwell there, who fiave a sufficiently convenient cloister, in accordance with the cenobitic custom, but do not live together claustraliter like other monks. Each has his own cell round the cloister, and in these they work, sleep, and eat. On Sundays they receive the necessary bread and vegetables (for the week) which is their only kind of food and is cooked byy each one in his own cell; water for drinking and for other purposes is supplied by a conduit . . . . There are no gold or silver ornaments in their church, except a silver chalice. They do not go to the church as we do [Guibert was a Benedictine], but only for certain of them. They hear Mass, unless I am mistaken, on Sundays and solemnities. They hardly ever speak, and, if they want anything, ask for it by a sign. If they ever drink wine, it is so watered down as to be scarcely better than plain water. They wear a bair shirt next the skin, and their other garments are thin and scanty. They live under a prior, and the Bishop of Grenoble acts as their abbot and provisor . . . Lower down the mountain there is a building containing over twenty most faithful lay brothers [laicos], who work for them. . . . Althougli they observe the utmost poverty, they are getting together a very rich library. (P.L., CLVI, 853 sqq.).
Peter the Venerable adds certain details, lays stress on the poorness of their garments, and mentions that they restricted their possessions both in land and cattle, and fixed their own number at thirteen monks, eighteen lay brothers, and a few servants. Of their diet he says, "They always abstain from the eating of meat, whether in health or ill. They never buy fish, but accept them if given in charity. Cheese an eggs are allowed on Sundays and Thursdays. On Tuesdays and Saturdays, they eat cooked vegetables, but on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, they take only bread and water. They eat once a day only, save at Christmas, Easter, Pentecost, Epiphany, and on certain other festivals . . . . On feast days they go to the refectory, eat twice, and sing the whole office in the church." (P.L., (CLXXXIX, 944 D.)
Guibert wrote in 1104, Peter some twenty years later, so there was time for development, which may account for certain discrepancies between the two accounts. The "Customsi" of the Chartreuse were not committed to writing till 1127. Bruno had left the world in order to serve God in solitude, and without any intention of founding an order. In the earliest days the hermits had no rule, but all strove to live after Bruno's example and in accordance with the Evangelical counsels. When regular monastic buildings were erected and vocations began to increase, some sort of rule became a necessity. St. Bruno wrote none, but the customs which he introduced, together with additions born of experience, were embodied in the "Consuetudines" written by Guigo, the fifth prior, in 1127. This was not a rule written with authority, but a record of the usages of the motherhouse of the order (Ann., 1, 305), compiled at the request of the priors of the charterhouses, and finally accepted by them as their code. In the introduction the writer says that almost all the customs are contained "either in the epistles of the Blessed Jerome, or in the Rule of St. Benedict, or in other authorized writings". A later writer, Boso, the nineteenth prior of the Grande Chartreuse (d. 1313), says, "It is clear that the contents of the Statutes come either from St. Benediet's Rule, St. Jerome's Epistles, the 'Vitae Patrum' or the 'collationes' and other writings of Cassian and the Fathers" (quoted in Ann., 1, 37). The Rule of St. Benedict (the only monastic rule of those days) gave the norm of those duties which were performed in common, and supplied the arrangement of the Divine Office, the treatment of guests, the form of the vows. Many new departures were introduced to meet the needs of the solitude which is an essential of the Carthusian life; from the Fathers of the Desert came the laura-like arrangement of the building and the solitary life of the cells, while the statutes are probably also indebted to the Rule of Camaldoli (see CAMALDOLESE) (founded by St. Romuald in 1012), which was reduced to writing by the Blessed Rudolf in 1080. The fundamental principle of Camaldoli and the Chartreuse is the same, namely, the combination of Western monasticism as embodied in St. Benedict's Rule with the eremitical life of the Egyptian solitaries. In both orders the superiors were to be priors, not abbots, and in all the earliest Carthusian houses there was, as at Camaldoli, a "lower house" for lay brothers who served the external needs of the contemplative monks at the "upper house". The first hermits tended strongly to be purely eremitical, but the cenobitic development was hastened hour by the necessities of life find by the influence of neigbouring Benedictine houses, especially perhaps of Cluny. The union of the two systems was only gradually evolved under the pressure of circumstance.
Guigo's "Consuetudines" were first approved by Innocent II in 1133 (Ann., I, 305) and are still the basis of the modern statutes. In 1258 the general, Dom Riffier, issued a new edition, adding various ordinances passed by the general chapters since 1127; these are known as the "Statuta Antiqua". The "Statuta Nova" with similar additions appeared in 1368. In 1509 the general chapter approved the "Tertia Cornpilatio", consisting of a collection of the ordinances of the chapters and a synopsis of the statutes. The Carthusian Rule was printed for the first time by Johann Amorbach at Basle in 1510. This volume contains Guigo's "Consuetudines", the "Statuta Antiqua", the "Statuta Nova", and the "Tertia Compilatio". The "Nova Collectio Statutorum" was published in l581. This work, which had cost eleven years of preparatory labour, includes in one well-ordered series all the various legislation scattered throughout the cumbersome volume of 1510. A century later a second edition was printed at the Correrie or "lower house" of the Grande Chartreuse by order of Dom Innocent Le Masson, and this, after receiving certain corrections of slight importance, was finally confirmed by Innocent XI by the Bull "Injunctum nobis" of 1588. Tile fifth edition of the statutes is a verbal reprint of the second. The first part, or "Ordinarium"', which is printed separately, is concerned with church ceremonial, the second treats of the government of the order and the observances and occupation of the religious, the third is concerned with the lay brothers and the nuns. Guigo's "Consuetudines" contains in substance the customs introduced by St. Bruno with certain additions and modifications. The many formal changes and accretions which the original "Consuetudines" have undergone, have affected neither their substance nor their spirit, but, as Le Masson says, "have been like a change of clothing, which adds nothing and takes nothing from the substance of the body" (Discip. Ord. Cart., 1, vii, 9). We must remember that the pictures given by Guibert and Peter the Venerable depict the Carthusian life at a stage of semi-development. The only mitigation of importance introduced since Guigo's day is the decrease of the fast on bread and water from thrice to once weekly. Additional duties have been laid upon the monks in the shape of extra prayers, the singing of a daily conventual Mass, the lengthening of the night Office and of the Office for the Dead, and the withdrawal of the permission to take a midday siesta, while, instead of having, as formerly, seven or eight hours uninterrupted sleep, their rest is now broken by the long night vigils (P. L., CLTII, 609A).
II. LIFE OF THE MONKS
A Carthusian monastery covers a great deal of ground owing to the system of life. It usually consists, of the great cloister, round which are the separate houses, or "cells" of the monks, the lesser cloister with cells of various officials, the "obediences", or workshops of the lay brothers and their living rooms, church, chapter-house, refectory and other conventual offices. The church is usually small and without aisles, divided by a solid screen with a door and two altars into the choir proper and lay brothers' choir. No organ is allowed. There is usually a tribune for visitors. No woman, save the sovereign, may enter a charterhouse. At the side of each cell door is the guichet or hatch, through which the monk's food is introduced by a lay brother; within, a covered ambulacrum, with a small garden beside it, leads to the house. This consists of five rooms; on the ground floor, a store room for timber and fuel, and a workshop with a lathe and other tools; above, an antechamber, a small library with just sufficient room for bookcase, chair, table, and the cell proper, whose furniture consists of a wooden box-bedstead with woollen blankets, and mattress of straw, a table for meals, a few chairs, a stove, and a stall with a prie-Dieu, known as the oratorium.
The Carthusian life is essentially solitary and contemplative with a certain admixture of the cenobitic element (see I). A very large part of the day is devoted to saying the three Offices (i.e. that of the day, the Office of Our Lady, which is called de Beata, and the Office of the Dead), while much time is given to mental prayer. The rest is divided between manual labour, study, and a little recreation. The whole horarium depends on whether the Office of the day be that of the feria or of a Sunday or feast. The following is the ferial arrangement, which is by far the commoner. The Carthusian's day begins at half-past five, when a junior monk, going the round of the cloister, rings a bell hanging near the sleeper's ear. The church bell rings at six, when Prime of the day is said in the oratorium, followed by Terce de Beata. All offices said in the oratorium are accompanied by full choir ceremonial, as bowing, covering, and uncovering. At half-past six the Angelus sounds, and the monk remains at prayer till a quarter to seven, when he goes to the church. The conventual Mass, which is always sung, is preceded by adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and the litanies of the saints. The Carthusian liturgy differs considerably from the Roman Rite, being substantially that of Grenoble in the twelfth century with some admixture from other sources. There are no servers at the high Mass, and the priest is attended by the deacon, who wears neither alb nor dalmatic, but the cuculla ecclesiastics (see below) and, for the Gospel only, a stole. The subdeacon merely reads the Epistle at the lectern in the middle of the choir. There are many other points of difference. Copes and monstrances are unknown in the charterhouse. After the conventual Mass the priests say their private Masses, reciting Terce with the server before vesting and Sext de Beata after their thanksgiving.
At about half-past eight the monk returns to his cell and is occupied with manual work and meditation till ten, when, after saying Sext of the day, he fetches his dinner from the guichet. The meal is copious and excellently cooked, consisting of vegetable soup, fish or eggs, vegetables, cheese, butter and fruit, and a small bottle of wine or, in England, of rather thin beer. After dinner there is an hour and a half of solitary recreation, which may be spent in garden, ambulacrum, or cell at will, and is followed by None; spiritual reading, study, and manual labour till half-past two, when Vespers de Beata are said. At a quarter to three the monk leaves his cell for the second time, going to the church to sing Vespers, and, except on feasts and their vigils, Vespers and Matins of the Dead. He returns to his cell about four, and, after half an hour's study, takes his supper, consisting generally of eggs and a little salad. This is followed by spiritual reading and examination of conscience, known in the order as the "recollection". At a quarter to six, but earlier on the eve of a feast, the bell sounds for Complin of the day and de Beata. At about half-past six the monk retires to bed, still wearing the greater part of his habit. Five hours after the Complin bell, he rises and says Matins and Lauds de Beata with the Psalm "Deus venerunt gentes" and certain prayers for the recovery of the Holy Land. These last were ordered to be said during Mass by the Lateran Council in 1215, and were retained voluntarily bv the Carthusians after the law ceased to bind, but transferred to this hour. At a quarter to twelve the monk leaves his cell for the third and last time to sing Matins and Lauds with Lauds of the Dead. This takes two and a half to three hours. To a visitor it is very impressive. A large portion of the Office is sung in complete darkness save for the sanctuary lamps, the rest by the light of small oil lamps carefully shaded to throw their light only one the choir books, one of which is provided for every three religious. The Carthusian chant, a species of Gregorian, has a special character of its own, slow and plaintive. "As the duty of a good monk is rather to lament than to sing", say the rubrics, "we must so sing that lamentation, not the joy of singing, be in our hearts." At about a quarter past two in the morning the Carthusian returns to his cell, where he says Prime de Beata. His total of sleep, thus broken into two parts, is seldom less than seven hours. On Sundays and feast days this horarium is considerably modified. The community assemble for all the Hours of the Great Office in church, and in the refectory for both meals. These latter are always eaten in silence, while the Scripture or some homily of the Fathers is chanted to the solemn tones of the nocturn-lessons. On these days also there is a common recreation with talking in the cloister for the solemnly professed, but only on Sundays for all. Once every week, the monks go out for a walk together, during which they converse. This is known as the Spatiamentum and usually lasts about three and a half hours.
During the great monastic fast, which lasts from 14 Sept. to Ash Wednesday, except for Sundays and feast days, dinner is an hour later, and supper consists of a glass of wine and a crust of bread ne potus noceat (Statutes). During Lent, Vespers are sung before dinner, which is not till midday and supper is as above. Meat is never allowed on any account, though, in a case of life and death, the monk may, if not solemnly professed, be dispensed. Once a week there is a fast on bread and water and during Advent and Lent, on Fridays and on certain vigils lacticinia are forbidden.
The Carthusian wears the ordinary monastic habit in white serge, but the scapular which is joined by bands at the side and has the hood attached to it, is known as the "cowl". The long flowing garment with wide sleeves, which usually bears this name, is used ony by the deacon at high Mass. No beard is worn, and the hair is shaved except for a narrow strip round the head. Novices wear a black mantle and their cowl is short and unjoined. The postulancy usually lasts one month, the novitiate one year, at the end which simple vows are taken; the solemn vows are taken four years later.
The lay brothers live an entirely cenobitical life, and are occupied in the servile work of the establishment. Their habit differs only slightly from that of the fathers. After two years postulancy and novitiate, the lay novice becomes a donné, wearing a brown habit, but takes no vows. He may remain always in this condition, but it requires eight more years to become a solemnly professed lay brother. The lay brothers and donnés, collectively known as the Familia, are under the procurator, and have their own chapel, chapter-house, and refectory. Their Office consists of a large number of Paters and Aves. They attend the night Office, conventual Mass, and Vespers, on Sundays and feasts, but usually only the first part of the night Office.
III. ORGANIZATION
The prior of the Grande Chartreuse, who is elected by the monks of that house, is always the general of the order. He wears no insignia, but is the only one in the order who receives the title of "Reverend Father", all other religious being known as "Venerable Fathers". The general chapter, which consists of the visitors and all the priors, meets annually, and receives the resignations of all the superiors of the order including the general. These it reinstates or removes at will. Its ordinances have the force of law, but do not become permanent unless twice renewed. The visitors, who are appointed by the chapter, make a visitation of each charterhouse every two vears, to enquire into its condition and reform any abuses. The first general chapter of the order was held by St. Anthelm in 1142, and in the year 1258 its powers were confirmed by Pope Alexander IV. To the wise ordinances of this body and to its series of distinguished generals the order owes its claim nunquam reformata quia nunquam deformata.
The prior of each house is, in strict law, elected by the professed monks of the community, if there are four present who have been actually professed for that house or who are original founders. Nowadays he is generally the father general and the chapter. The prior is assisted by various officials. These are the vicar, who takes the prior's place in case of necessity, the procurator, who is entrusted with the temporal administration and the care of the lay brothers, the coadjutor, who looks after guests and retreatants, the antiquior, who takes the vicar's place, the sacristan, and the novice-master.
IV. DEVELOPMENT
From its very nature the order grew slowly. In 1300 there were but 39 monasteries, but during the fourteenth century 113 were founded, extending as ftr as Silesia, Bobemia, and Hungary. During the Great Schism there were two generals, but both resigned on the election of Alexander V in 1409 and the order was once more united. During the fifteenth century, 44 charterhouses were founded and in 1521 there were in all 206, but during the sixteenth century 39 were destroyed b the Reformation and only l3 founded. In 1559 a foundation in Mexico was projected but fell through owing to the opposition of the King of Spain. Writing in 1607 Le Masson says, "We number about 2,500 choir monks and 1,300 lay brothers and donnés, giving an average of a dozen fathers and eight or nine lay brothers to each house". Between 1600 and 1667, 22 monasteries were founded, and then no more till the nineteenth century. The order entirely escaped the scourge of commendatory superiors. Joseph 11 suppressed 24 houses, and in 1784 the Spanish Government compelled its charterhouses to separate from the order.
The French charterhouses were less infected with Jansenism than most of the ancient orders. Owing to the energy of the general, Dom Antoine de Mongeffond, only thirty monks out of a total of over 1,000, and those mostly belonging to the Paris house, ultimately refused to sign the "Unigenitus". These fled to Utrecht. At the outbreak of the Revolution there were 122 charterhouses, which were nearly all suppressed, as the French armies swept over Europe. In 1816 the monks returned to the Grande Chartreuse. The Spanish houses were suppressed in 1835; the Port-Dietu in Switzerland, which had escaped the earlier storm, in 1847; the monasteries in Italy for a second time during the course of the Risorgimento; and the restored French houses as a consequence of the Association Laws of 1901.
V. PRESENT STATE OF THE ORDER
In 1900 the monks possessed eleven monasteries in France and nine in other parts of Europe. The French houses are now empty and four new or restored houses have been opened in Spain and Italy. The following is a list of the charterhouses existing at the end of 1907. In Italy: Farneta, near Lucca, recently repurchased and occupied by the general and the conventus Cartusiae; Pisa; Florence, where the monks are merely custodians of a national monument; Trisulti, near Alatri; La Torre, in Calabria; Vedana, in the Diocese of Belluno; La Cervara, near Genoa, recently repurchased. The Procura of the order at Rome. In Spain: Monte Allegro, near Barcelona; Aula Dei, Peñaflor, near Saragossa; Miraflores, with its spelendid royal tombs; the liqueur is made at the Casa de los Cartujos, Tarragona. In England: Parkminster, in Sussex, is the largest charterliouse in the world, with thirty-six cells and 3,166 feet of cloister. It now contains the community of Notre-Dame de Près, Montreuil, as well as its own. In Switzerland: Val-Sainte in Canton Friburg. In Gerimany: Hain near Düsseldorf. In Austria Pletterjack, founded in 1403, abandoned 1595, and since rebuilt. In Belgium: the printing works belonging to Montreuil are now at Tournai. There are 300 solemnly professed monks, 35 junior professed, and 15 novices, making 350 choir monks, of whom about 20 are not yet priests; also about the same total of lay brothers, lay novices, and donnés. The badge of the order is a globe surronded by a cross and seven stars, with the motto "Stat crux, dum volvitur orbis".
The famous liqueur is a secret manufacture, invented by the monks in the nineteenth century, as a means of subsistence, to take the place of the broad acres lost in the Revolution. The large proceeds, after assisting to pay for the maintenance of the various charterhouses and the building of new ones, has been entirely devoted to various works of charity.
VI. DISTINGUISHED CARTHUSIANS
Besides St. Bruno the best known saints of the order are: St. Hugh, Bishop of Lincoln (d. 1200); St. Anthelm, seventh prior of the Grande Chartreuse, and first general, who died Bishop of Belley in 1178; St. Arthold, Bishop of Belley (d. 1206); St. Stephen of Chitillon, Bishop of Die (d. 1213). Many members have been beatified, among them the English Carthusian martyrs and Bl. Nicolo Albergati, Cardinal and Bishop of Bologna. There have been about seventy Carthusian bishops and archbishops, including a few cardinals. There has never been a Carthusian pope.
Guibert mentions the richness of the library of the chartreuse (see I), and in his "Consuetudines" Guigo writes, "We desire that books be looked after most carefully as the continual food of our souls, and that they be written [fieri] with the utmost diligence, so that we may preach the Word of God by the work of our hands, since we cannot do so with our mouths", and again, "we teach writing to almost all whom we receive" (P.L., CLIII, 693). Throughout the Middle Ages the Carthusians were famous copyists. St. Bruno himself was the first Carthusian author, writing commentaries on the Psalms and on St. Paul's Epistles (v. Löbbel, op. cit. infra, 179-241). He was followed by Guigo, who, besides the "Consuedines", wrote "Meditations" and a "Life of St. Hugh of Grenoble". Writers of the order have mostly treated of ascetics and mvstical theology. The following are among the more famous: Ludolf of Saxony (d. after 1340), the author of a well known "Vita Christi"; Henry of Xalkar (d. 1408), who converted Gerhard Groot; Denis the Carthusian (d. 1471), the Doctor Ecstatims whose works are now being edited by the order in 45 vols.; Lanspergius (d., 1539); Surius (d. 1578), whose "Vitae" still form a useful supplement to the Bollandists' unfinished "Acta"; Nicholas Molin (d. 1638); Petreius (d. 1640); Innocent Le Masson (d. 1703); Le Couteulx (d. 1709); Tromby, who flourished c. 1783, all historians of the order. The first book printed at a charterhouse was issued from the presses of the Seliola Dei near Parma in 1477. The modern printing works of the order were transferred in 1901 from the chartreuse of Montreuil to Tournai.
VII. ENGLISH PROVINCE
The first English charterhouse was founded at Witham in Somerset by King Henry II in 1178, the tenth and last by Henry V in 1414 at Sheen. At the time of Henry VIII's breach with Rome the monks, especially those of the London charterhouse (founded 1370), offered a stanch resistance. The fourth of May, 1535, is memorable for the deaths of the Protomartyrs of the English Reformation, the Bridgettine Monk Richard Reynolds, and the three Carthusian Priors, John Houghton of London, Robert Lawrence of Beauvale, and Augustus Webster of Axholme. During the next five years, fifteen of the London Carthusians perished on the scaffold or were starved to death in Newgate Gaol. On Mary's accession nineteen monks belonging to various houses gathered at Sheen under Prior Maurice Chauncy, a monk of the London Charterhouse, who, to his lasting sorrow, had lost the crown of martyrdom by taking the Oath of Supremacy. The restoration was short-lived, for on Mary's death the monks were once more driven into exile. Prior Chauncy (died in 1581, but the English community kept together in different parts of the Low Countries with varying fortunes, until the charterhouse of Sheen Anglorum at Nieuport, with a community of six choir monks and two donnés, was suppressed by Joseph II in 1783. The last prior, Father Williams, died at Little Malvern Court, 2 June, 1797. His papers, the seal of Sheen Anglorum, and various relics are now in the possession of the Carthusians of Parkminster. A charterhouse was founded at Perth in 1429 by King James I of Scotland, and a short-lived foundation was made at Kinalehin in South Connaught in 1280, being abandoned by the order in 1321.
VIII. CARTHUSIAN NUNS
In the Priorship of St. Antheim, about 1245, the nuns of the ancient Abbey of Prébayon asked to be received into the order, and Blessed John of Spain, Prior of Montrieux, was ordered to adapt the Carthusian Rule to their needs. The nuns have never been numerous. Two convents were founded in the twelfth century, nine in the thirteenth, and four in the fourteenth, but of all these only nine were in existence in 1400. In 1690 when Innocent Le Masson published the "Statuts des Moniales" there were only five, four of which were in France and one near Bruges; the last was suppressed by Joseph 11 in 1783, and the others disappeared in the French Revolution. In 1820 the surviving nuns reassembled at Lozier (Isere), and finally settled in 1822 at Beauregard, some miles from the Grande Chartreuse. Thence foundations were made in 1854 at Bastide-Saint-Pierre (Tarn-et-Garonne), and in 1870 at Notre-Dame du Gard near Amiens. The nuns are still at Beauregard, but the rest are in exile at Burdine in Belgium, and at San Francesco, and Motta Grossa near Turin. The total number of nuns is about 140, of whom 90 are "consecrated".
The Carthusian nuns have always been famed for their regularity and fervour. Convents which had become lax were cut off from the order by the general chapter. The small number of convents is explained not only by the severity of the rule, but also by the great reluctance to accept new houses always displayed by the order. In 1368 the acceptance of new houses was forbidden by the general chapter, and this prohibition was frequently reiterated. The life of the nuns is very similar to that of the monks, with certain exceptions. They have single rooms instead of separate dwellings, two recreations every day, eat together daily, are not bound to wear the cilicium, and if ill are cared for in an infirmary. They are allowed eight hours sleep. Eleven hours daily are given to prayer and meditation, as well as work for the poor or for the church. The arrangement of their Office is practically that of the monks. Perpetual enclosure has been practised since the thirteenth century, and visitors are only received at a grille and in the presence of another nun. Each convent is divided into two distinct parts:
the monastery proper with the cells and conventual offices;
the dwelling of the two monks, who are known as the vicar and the coadjutor. These two direct the nuns and have two or three lay brothers to serve them. The two fathers live exactly as if in a charterhouse, attending Office in stalls placed in the sanctuary of the church, which is divided from the nuns' choir by a curtained grille.
The nuns are subject to the general chapter which appoints the vicar. They elect their own prioress, though the vicar has the first voice in the election; the prioresses must consult the vicar in all important matters and, like the priors, are bound to tender their resignation to each general chapter.
The habit is the same as that of the monks, with the exception of the hood, for which a veil is substituted -- white for the young religious, and black for the "consecrated" nuns. According to the statutes the vows should be solemn, but since the Revolution they have been regarded as simple by the Church. No widow is received. The Carthusian nuns have retained the privilege of the consecration of virgins, which they have inherited from the nuns of Prébayon. The consecration, which is given four years after the vows are taken, can only be conferred by the diocesan. The rite differs but slightly from that given in the "Pontifical". The nun is invested with a crown, ring, stole and maniple, the last being worn on the right arm. These ornaments the nun only wears again on the day of her monastic jubilee, and after her death on her bier. It is a consecrated nun who sings the Epistle at the conventual Mass, though without wearing the manible. At Matins, if no priest be present, a nun assumes the stole and reads the Gospel. There are also lay sisters, Données, and Saeurs Touricres. Famous among Carthusian nuns have been St. Roseline of Villeneuve and Bl. Beatrix of Ornacieus.

Aquaman Trailer - The King Has Arrived
[vc_row][vc_column][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDkg3h8PCVU” title=”Aquaman Trailer Looks Really Dope”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]DC started off real rough with the Titans Trailer, but their Hall H presentation has shown that they may have realized what was wrong with their films and Shazam, Wonder Woman 84 and Aquaman is their conduit to getting back on track. This trailer fixes the air bubbles that Snyder had for Aquaman under water under James Wan has mixed the horror and beauty of Atlantis.
This film seems to be about the journey of Author taking his rightful place of King of Atlantis. His brother Ocean Master is looking to attack the surface world (a reacurring plot point in Aquaman comics) and Mera comes to convince Author that the only way to stop him is to become kings.
We see clips of Black Manta in this trailer as well and they seem to be embracing is comic book roots. DC has taking some abusive about its movies (rightfully so) in recent years. However, they seem to be listening to the fans and making changes for the better. Aquaman has been a punch line in the super hero world mostly because of Family Guy, but this film presents him as ever bit the contemporary of Batman and Superman.
DC released this trailer at is Hall H panel at San Diego Comic Con along with some preview footage of Shazam and Wonder Woman 84. The Wonder Woman footage was not released to the public, but you can find the Shazam trailer HERE.
All in all, I think what everyone who is a fan of this genre is for DC to be a competitor with Marvel and put our good films. If they desire to keep building this shared universe than they need to diversify their film styles, embrace the source of the characters and move away from the whole Injustice feel. Apocrypha Chapter Twenty Eight: Remedy
Masterlist can be found Here! Thanks!
Chapter Twenty Eight: Remedy
Note: It took me entirely too much willpower not to mention what was going to happen in this chapter when I was talking to a few of you about two weeks ago about something. You'll know what I'm talking about as soon as soon as you get to that part!
(-~-)
The peaceful evening silence that enveloped Magnolia’s sleepy tree-lined street suddenly subsided as a low hum filled the air. Within seconds, a glowing blue portal opened up at the foot of her front steps and out stepped Sparda’s descendants, slightly disoriented and unsure of their location at first glance. Nero’s eyes darted from side to side as he took in the area that surrounded them in an attempt to reorient himself. Nothing looked familiar to him until he caught sight of a familiar Apothecary, nodding to himself in silent recognition. How could he forget those stairs? Sometimes he swore he could still feel the indent they’d left in his body the very first time they’d come here.
Dante took in the quiet streets, seemingly recognizing where they were as well. He didn’t vocalize this, but it was evident nonetheless in the way that he relaxed and put his sword away. Explaining that sort of thing to any possible onlookers wasn’t something they intended to do anytime soon, especially after what had happened in Redgrave City. The only saving grace of that incident was the fact that people tended to close their windows and stay inside after dark. And something told the youngest Son of Sparda that something similar might happen to the quiet little beachside town they’d just vacated if they didn’t return sometime soon to make sure that conduit wasn’t functional. From what Dante could tell, it seemed somewhat similar to a Hellgate. If it was possible to destroy it, then they should probably go about doing so.
Moments later, Vergil passed through the portal with V, the portal finally closing behind it’s master as the Darkslayer carried the somewhat disoriented summoner towards the stairs quietly. There was a sort of cutting discomfort that came with the silence, indicating to Dante that his older twin might be more concerned than he was letting on. Vergil was focused on a task, and that task was making sure that V was safe. Anyone or anything that got between him and that task was in for a rude awakening. If there was one thing that Dante knew for certain about his twin brother, it was that when he set his mind to something, it became his only focus until the take was completed. That single minded drive was admirable in some cases, but the things that Vergil tended to focus on were, well, less than ideal most of the time. To say that it was a pleasant change of pace to see him focus on something or someone dear to him instead of staying behind to do battle would be an understatement. Dante just wished that something wasn’t his wounded nephew. It seemed that the young white haired summoner simply couldn’t catch a break.
Just before Nero reached the front door, it suddenly slammed open and out stepped Magnolia, weapon drawn and ready to fight. She looked as fierce and determined as ever. Nero felt a strange sense of dejavu pass over him as the alchemist lowered the long rod in her hands and sat it down against the inside of the doorway, letting out a sigh of relief as she shook her and blinked slowly.
“Well, it’s quite the surprise to see you here, love. But a pleasant one, to be sure. How did you manage to return so quickly…” Her eyes traveled away from Nero and down towards Vergil, widening slightly as she trailed off. The horror in her face was subtle but apparent as she caught sight of V, the back of her hand traveling up towards her face and covering her lips.” That’s a lot of blood. Please tell me he’s not…”
Vergil shook his head as he approached, the summoner in question shivering slightly and letting out a soft cough as if in response to her inquiry. “No, but I can see why you would think that. His condition doesn’t exactly inspire optimism.”
She met him halfway, placing the back of her hand on V’s shoulder to try and see the injury. With a disapproving scowl and a shake of her head, she gestured towards the front door, back away from them and towards the house. “Come with me. I’ll see what I can do. If everything goes as planned, then the others should arrive in just over two hours. I can work with that.”
Nero and Dante followed closely behind as Magnolia led them into the house, heading down a hallway adjacent to her staircase that Nero honestly hadn't noticed was there the last time he’d visited. The space contained three doors, on either side of the hall and one at the very end. She entered the door at the end of the hallway, passing the one closest to the living room. Upon entering, she turned on the light and stepped out of the way, allowing Vergil to enter.
At first, Nero was surprised to find that it was a bathroom, but then the logic behind the decision occurred to him. He was soaked in blood. This would probably be the easiest place to remedy that situation and to clean up after the fact. Nero could only hope that the majority of the blood his older brother had came from his kidnappers and not from him, but he silently acknowledged that that was more than likely wishful thinking. V wouldn’t have looked so weary and hurt if things had turned out any other way. But in spite of the fact that he had no idea where V was even injured, he couldn’t help but notice that he’d been limping rather heavily when they’d found one another.
“I think his leg might be hurt or something. He doesn’t seem like he can stand up, and I’ve seen him walk off worse injuries than that before.” Nero said quietly as Vergil placed V into the bathtub. Although there was no water in the tub, V shivered against the cold surface of the porcelain edging, showing that he was still more coherent than his physical state might have alluded to. He blinked slowly for a moment before closing his eyes again and breathing heavily, clearly exhausted but not one to complain about it even when he had every right to do so.
Magnolia nodded in recognition of Nero’s statement before leaning over V and snapping her fingers in order to get his attention. He opened his eyes slightly, only moving his vivid green pupils in response to her presence. Anything more was out of the question at that point. “Sorry, dear. I’m afraid that I have to touch you. I get the impression that’s not something you normally go for. Do forgive me.”
V blinked in a way so slow and deliberate that it could only be taken as a sign of conformation. She then turned her attention to his leg, quickly locating the puncture wound that had caused him so very much trouble. With a sympathetic wince, she sat down on the floor and opened the doors to her sink, pulling out a sizable clear container filled with a number of jars and other miscellaneous products. One could only assume it was a first aid kit of some sort, but they had no way of truly knowing until she actually used it. “That’s quite the stab wound. Some sort of crooked or curved blade if I was to make an educated guess. Nasty piece of work, that one.”
Upon leaning over to silently observe magnolia’s handiwork, Vergil nodded to himself subtly, making a mental note of something. “It seems you were correct, Nero. How observant of you.” Vergil said in an almost impressed tone.” Any ideas as to what kind of blade could inflict such a wound?”
In an action that surprised everyone present, V shifted slightly and reached into his back pocket, producing the very blade in question. The curved dagger glistened in the dim light, raising questions as to what it was composed of in the first place. Even in his weakened state, he found the energy to smirk in self satisfaction at his handiwork. “It’s nothing compared to this,” He said tiredly as he used the same hand to pull back the collar of his shirt on the left side to reveal the deep stab wound Agreus had inflicted upon him,” But I like to think he’s enjoying the matching hole I left in his leg in whatever part of hell he currently resides in.”
Magnolia gestured towards the blade, quietly requesting to hold it. V obliged, more than happy to not have to look at it again for a while. She turned it over in her hands, examining it in earnest with a look of confusion and fascination plastered across her face. She then passed it off to Vergil, the oldest Son of Sparda clearly displeased that such an instrument had found itself embedded into one of his children. Nero gritted his teeth at the sight of the blade, more than happy to pass up an opportunity to get hands on with it. From what he could tell, it was quite sharp. And he was willing to bet that it had been extremely painful to have lodged inside of such a sensitive part of V’s body. It made him want to kill the cultist responsible even more than he already did.
How could someone do that to someone else?
“That blade is exceptionally old, wouldn’t you agree, Vergil?” Magnolia said as she assessed V’s neck wound with a look of sympathy on her face. How dare someone do this to her newfound companion! He was such a gentle soul.” I can’t imagine where a cult would obtain such an artifact. It seems demonic in origin, and last time I checked, there wasn’t exactly a museum they could steal this from.”
Vergil held the blade up into the light again, turning it over his hands. Yes, there was most certainly something demonic about the blade. It seemed to almost absorb the blood that it was coated in, and a quick rinse under the faucet revealed that it was actually hydrophobic aside from that. How truly fascinating. And concerning.
As the eldest of the Dark Knight Sparda’s twin sons examined the blade, Dante stepped forward and shot it a glance, his brow furrowing slightly at the sight of it up close. He grabbed it as Vergil was in the process of looking it over, giving it a quick examination, and then immediately handing it back to him before he had time to become irritated about the fact that he’d just snagged it without asking to do so first.
“Is there something you’d like to add, Dante?” Vergil inquired almost sarcastically, his arms folded. He placed the dagger down on the counter, now finished with his studies. There was nothing more he could glean from it, at least not without further context and reference materials. That could be a problem. But right now, they had a list of those longer than Magnolia’s house was tall. And as soon as V recovered from his injuries, they needed to start addressing them. If the cultists had been telling the truth, then they had much bigger problems than a few deranged summoners having meet and greets in the wilderness outside of a derelict city. Belial was an especially unkind demon, the likes of which even the demon emperor Mundus didn’t enjoy interacting with. As demon princes, they were both constantly vying for power, but Belial was nothing like his king. No, he was much more cunning. Much more covert in his operations. Much more intelligent. His ruthless machinations knew no bounds, and anyone who stood between him and his goals tended to suffer immensely for their insubordination. And from what he could tell, the dark prince seemed to have a goal in mind. V.
How unfortunate for Belial.
“Actually, I do.” Dante said as he leaned against the back wall. Nero shot him a curious look. A situation where Dante knew something about the Underworld that Vergil didn’t? Now what was a rare thing to behold.” I’ve seen this thing before. It was about ten years ago now.”
Vergil waved him on as if to tell him to continue while Magnolia tended to V’s injuries to the best of her abilities. Things had suddenly become much more interesting. “How can you be so sure?
Dante sighed, glancing over at V as the young summoner shifted in discomfort. It was at times like this that he was exceedingly glad he healed so quickly from injuries. The prospect of having something stuffed into such a raw wound to help stop the bleeding wasn’t favorable to him. “Because I helped kill the guy who stole it in the first place, Vergil. He was going to use it to unleash some demon named Argosax, so this secret order of supposedly part demon guardians that… You know, I still don’t know what they really do?” Dante scratched the back of his ear, genuinely trying to remember and failing miserably at it. He’d honestly never really asked or paid that much attention in the first place.” My point is that they guard these things called Arcana, and that’s one of them. I gave them back to a friend of mine there and left it alone. Wasn’t trying to get wrapped up any further into whatever dad did with them way back when. They’d probably like that back.”
The oldest Son of Sparda stared at his younger twin blankly, clearly taken aback by this revelation, and not hiding it nearly as well as he probably would have liked. Vergil took a moment to compose himself before speaking, not at all used to being so far out of his depth.”... You found a secret order composed of others that are similar to us that were aligned with our father and never thought that mentioning that might be a good idea?” Vergil said gesturing firmly with both hands as though he were contemplating strangling the life out of his younger twin then and there.” Do you have any idea how long I searched for something like-”
Magnolia sighed, catching their attention. “Fight about that on the way over there, dears. You should go see them about this. Blades like that can sometimes be sacrosanct and cursed. Between that and whatever this fluid is that V is covered in, an order of guardian warrior priests might be just what the doctor ordered.” The alchemist brushed her hair out of the way and reached for the shower faucet, fully intending to try and remove said liquid off of her hapless patent.” This doctor, that is. Well, this Apothecary. I can’t claim the title. My point is that I’m doing everything I can, but I can’t account for that kind of magical interference.”
Nero nodded in agreement. “She’s got a point. We should probably do that. It’s their knife, right? Maybe they could tell us what’s going on with this cult and why they’d need it?”
As the three of them considered this, V practically jumped out of his skin in response to being sprayed with cold water from Magnolia’s shower. He bumped his head against the wall, shooting her a weary and perplexed look as if to ask her why she would do something like that to him. Magnolia gave his right shoulder a soft pat and ruffled his now damp hair, causing the not quite closed cut in his head to sting. There were so many individual parts of his body that hurt that it was genuinely hard for his brain to wrap itself around them.” I do enjoy traveling. And maybe this time there will be less cult activity since their leader fell into that conduit.”
Magnolia visibly paled. “Wait, is that what you're covered in?! They had access to a conduit and a ritual blade?!” She looked startled as she doused V with yet another layer of water.” That makes things considerably worse, all things considered. I can only imagine what they would have done should they have succeeded in finishing whatever sinister ritual they were obviously working on!”
Vergil nodded in agreement. The very thought of it was… unpleasant. “Especially considering the fact that we now know that Belial is in league with them. Nothing good ever comes from any dealings with him.”
The middle aged alchemist stared at her longtime friend for a moment, a look of blank horror on her face as she shut off the water.” … Belial? Oh, how I wish you were just joshing. Why couldn’t you have a sense of humor so that I didn’t always have to take you so seriously?!”
Dante scoffed at her statement.
He asked himself that same question every day.
With a shaky sigh, V turned to face the rest of them, nowhere near foolish enough to attempt standing given his current state. “I can only assume that was the demon who spoke to the cult leader before I…” V stopped dead in his tracks, his brain suddenly ceasing all function. He’d completely disregarded the gravity of what he’d done down in those caves.” Oh, that’s right. I may have done something I wasn’t aware I was capable of doing.”
Dante and Vergil both shot one another a curious look before turning their attention back towards V. Nero looked several shades more baffled than they did somehow. Magnolia simply looked at all four of them like she was about to commit murder if it was anything else bad. “Yes, we felt that. To be honest, I was doubtful that you were physically capable of triggering in the first place. Color me surprised.”
Nero decided to disregard Vergil’s pathetic attempt at humor in favor of staring at V like he’d grown a second head. That had been the energy he’d recognized when they were down there! It had reminded him of that day in the laboratory underneath Fortuna Castle when Agnus had nearly ended his life. Had V’s injuries triggered something similar within him? And if so, why hadn’t he recovered from his injuries yet? Did it have something to do with that blade, or was what had happened to him a one off in of itself? Nero had no idea how Dante or Vergil had managed to transform for the first time. And now that he knew that V was capable of doing so, he was genuinely irritated that he’d missed the opportunity to see him do that for the first time himself.
V gave the three of them an incredulous look. He wasn’t entirely sure how to process everything that had happened that evening. It all seemed surreal and painful in a way he was not equipped to deal with. All V wanted to do was rest at that point and recover from his injuries. He had a sneaking suspicion that he might undergo the same sort of rapid regeneration that he’d benefited from the last time he’d been hurt and gone to sleep. At the very least he wanted to know if that was the case.
Dante laughed slightly.” Yea I bet that was a rush. That cultists probably had no idea what hit em’. Kinda mad I didn’t get to see the look on his face now. But at least he’s probably dead, right?”
V gave his uncle a vapid look. Probably? “Do you think he could’ve survived something like that?”
The youngest Son of Sparda shrugged. “Can’t say. Don’t know much about how those things work. Brother?”
All they received in response was a shrug from Vergil. He himself wasn’t entirely sure. Conduits were relatively rare, and the one they had just visited had been utterly decimated by V’s attack. Still, he would look into it. V didn’t need to spend the rest of his life looking over his shoulder in anticipation for yet another stabbing. That had to be bad for his mental state. “I cannot say. Although I am curious as to how you heard Belial speak in the first place on account of how he has no mouth.”
The young summoner blinked in surprise, wracking his brain in an attempt to try and figure that out for himself. Had that been inside of his head? Was it an unwanted side effect of being so close to a conduit? V could only speculate. And the severe amount of exhaustion and pain that he was currently suffering from didn’t help very much in that regard. “... I do not know.”
Magnolia shook her head and gestured towards the door nearest to the living room. “For now, let’s not trouble him about it. He needs to rest while I tend to the rest of his injuries. Don’t make me spray you with this. Because I will.”
Vergil raised an eyebrow, intrigued as to why she thought he’d back down from such an empty threat. “Yes, Magnolia. Because water is such-”
Without warning she switched the sprayer back on, hitting Vergil dead in the face. The look of genuine shock and confusion that crossed his face in response to her actions was truly something. Dante ducked out of the way, not eager to be soaked as he scurried down the hallway like a kicked puppy. Vergil backed off, staring daggers at his longtime friend as he did so. He would find a way to get her back for that one.
For his part, Nero simply laughed at them both while V shook his head in exhausted disbelief. The short haired devil hunter turned to his brother and extended his hand, more than willing to help him up. After all the blood he’d gotten on himself from helping V, he could use a shower himself. “Need some help, V?”
V looked up at him, genuinely unable to find the strength to move even a finger. A small, appreciative smile crossed his face as he blinked slowly in response to his younger sibling’s generous offer. “Yes. That would be advisable.”

This was such a fun chapter to write the dialogue for! OMG! Here’s a link to the art that inspired my idea of what V’s DT looks like in this fic. If it’s not broken, don’t fix it! Go check them out! I’m sure you’d love their DMC art! Don’t worry, I asked first! They are super nice! See you in the comment section!
