30 Statues of English Kings & Queens
This statue gallery covers 30 English kings and queens over 1400 years, from the early Anglo-Saxon rulers to Queen Elizabeth II (reign 1952-2022). The statues are primarily located in England. Some have local significance, based in the former capitals of the small Anglo-Saxon kingdoms like Canterbury, Tamworth and Winchester. However, some of these early rulers were canonised as saints, becoming important figures throughout the Christian world. This explains why St. Oswald (reign 634-642) has a statue in Italy, and St. Edward the Confessor (reign 1042-1066) has one in the United States of America.
There are also statues of foreign consorts and conquerors in their native countries of France and Spain, warrior kings with statues near the site of their death, like Harold Godwinson (reign 1066) at Hastings and Richard III of England (reign 1483-1485) at Leicester and modern monarchs with statues in the former colonies they ruled over, like Australia and India.
Over time, we see the depictions of the king's role change. Richard I of England (reign 1189-1199) and Edward I of England (reign 1272-1307) are depicted as warrior-kings with swords held aloft in victory. Yet, as a king became more of a figurehead and less of a warlord, they would be depicted as spreaders of peace and wisdom, as with the statue of James I of England (reign 1603-1625), standing on the walls of a library, where he wields a book, rather than a sword and above him, is the inscription, "Blessed are the peacemakers."
Some of these statues were controversial at the time of building and continue to be so today. The construction of the Oliver Cromwell (reign 1653-1658) statue outside the House of Commons was fiercely debated and opposed by many who saw it as an offence against the monarchy. In Australia, which retains the British monarch as its Head of State, a statue of George V (reign 1910-1936) was recently beheaded by anti-monarchy activists.
The sculptors who created these statues found ancient and modern inspirations for their subjects. The statues of James II of England (reign 1685-1688) and George III of Great Britain (r. 1760-1820) were constructed not to depict them as they looked but as Roman Emperors, as part of the Classical Art movement. Nor was the statue of Henry V of England (reign 1413-1422) designed to look like him, but rather like the actor Laurence Olivier, who played Henry V in a 1944 movie.
These statues are found in a wide variety of locations. From traditional sites outside churches, castles, and in town centres, some are found in unexpected places. In Hong Kong, a statue of George VI (reign 1936-1952) is to be found in a Zoo. Edward the Confessor's American statue is located on a university campus, while Edward I stands guard next to a football pitch, and Henry V observes traffic from a West Midlands roundabout.
The gallery ends with a statue of Queen Elizabeth II, made in November 2022 to celebrate her Platinum Jubilee (70 years of her reign). It is located on the walls of York Minster, which visitors can observe on their way to see the statue of Henry I of England (reign 1100-1135), which is the oldest statue in the gallery, built during the reign of Henry V, in the 1420s.

Okay, so the other night I fell down a rabbit hole of sorts. I found some post cards that Vincent had written to his daughter and his (ex) wife Mary. I just think they're so sweet. So I'm sharing them here. These do NOT belong to me. So I do NOT take credit. I just think they're awesome. I'll also do my best to translate in case anyone has any problem reading his writing.
This is a postcard he send to his daughter, Victoria in 1965. Look at the hearts he drew at the top!!!! Whyyyy is this so damn precious?! Moving on... It reads:
Dearest Toria - I love my Easter present - your pictures are beautiful but they make me homesick to see you. It won't be long now and we will have lots of fun when we are together again - I'll make you popovers and meat sticks in the fire and will plant a tree on your birthday and have a big cake! My movie is finally going pretty well but I wish I was doing it at home. Thanks Myrna for the letter. All my love, Daddy
Tumblr media
This post card was sent to his ex-wife Mary in the mid 70s. By this time, he was married to Coral Browne, but remained close friends with Mary. According to their daughter, there was an inside joke to this postcard (which I never understood - but maybe it's not for me to understand :) ) it reads:
Of course I never saw it - who has? The trip to Hong Kong was endless and I've been working my tail off doing publicity, etc. But still find Hong Kong fascinating even tho it's twice as big and as crowded as before - I overlook the bay to the peninsula now nestled unhappily in a forest of skyscrapers but I hear still good. All my love, Vincent *SIGH*
Tumblr media
This post card was sent to his daughter, Victoria and his ex wife Mary Price in February of 1975. Again, he was married to Coral Browne but remained close friends with his ex wife Mary. His daughter once said, "I was lucky that my parents remained friends after the divorce. They wanted what's best for each other and for me, which wasn't always easy because of my stepmother." Which, I could understand her stepmother's point of view, there. But still, it's insanely sweet that they remained good friends.
It reads: Dearest Tor. This is one of the fun things in the great modern museum here in Buffalo. The tour goes well but the weathers terrible. I was 8 hours late getting here but didn't miss the lecture. Love to you both, Dad.
Tumblr media
This letter was sent to his daughter, Victoria in 1976. It reads: Dearest Torsie. On my way to Ohio to rehearse Oliver - had a nice talk with your mama who says you're having a ball - I'd love to hear from you and so am sending a couple of cards to write on- do send them in the next week or so as I'll be here until the 20th - but so will you! All love to you! Dad.
Tumblr media
This post card was sent to his ex wife, Mary and his daughter Victoria in 1979. It reads:
Dearest M + V (Mary and Victoria) Well it slipped into town and seems to be doing very well though it's very strange management but quite legitimate - a lovely theater and set and nice people but NY audiences are not as vociferous as Denver, etc. still it's nice to be here and I love living in Gramercy park. I walk to work but taxi home. I've decided to do only a few head one nighters as it's too difficult to check everything and play it too. Still love doing it however - All Love Dad

Meet Modern Shaman Sabrina Villard
Tumblr media
As a tot, Sabrina Villard took her first steps in the Sahara desert, just south of Algeria. She did so while holding the hand of her great-grandmother, a Bedouin shaman--who are known in the region as Fugara--who she says lived to be 123 years old.
"She is still with me every day, guiding me," says Villard, who inherited and honed her skills as a shaman from her late great-grandmother. She keeps a photo of her on an altar surrounded by candles and flowers in the corner of her ceremony room, which occupies the second bedroom of her apartment on Robinson Road in Hong Kong's Mid-Levels district.
To this day, when faced with adversity or difficult decisions, a distinct tingle on her arm is a reassuring sign that her great-grandmother is watching over her. And one year ago, feeling she had that support, Villard made one of the biggest decisions of her life so far.
At the time, she was the Apac project manager for one of the world's most revered luxury fashion houses by day, and by night, she would guide clients on shamanic journeys, straddling the living and spiritual realms to assist in a variety of areas: from healing traumas to removing subconscious patterns that block people from reaching their full potential.
"The traditional definition of a shaman is a seer in the dark," says Villard. "I don't know about anyone's life when they come to me. I am shown what you are ready to see by your spirit guides, ancestors and your own memories. I have a conversation with your soul."
Last September, on her birthday, she quit her high-flying fashion job to pursue her role as a shaman full-time. "I resigned on my birthday," says the self-proclaimed witch. "Rebirth day!"
Since then, she has made it her mission to spread the ancient healing art of shamanism throughout the modern world. Without compromising its sanctity, she has found ways to make it approachable and applicable to even those who might be put off by the "woo-woo" perception of it.
"Some people like the theatrics of it: the crystals, the potions or dressing a certain way ... but it's not for me," says Villard, who prefers not to use any tools in her shamanic practice, and whose style is more wicked than witch. "For me, the modern witch is sure of herself and her intuition."
In fact, Villard recently became the first shaman to enter the metaverse, spending the last few months building a world on online virtual community platform VRChat under her moniker, V-Healing. The dreamy domain is a futuristic, space station-esque oasis that looks out to a desert landscape--a nod to her Bedouin roots.
Villard may be the first, but she hopes she isn't the last, and that over time, spirituality and alternative forms of healing will find their place in virtual reality.
"I know a lot of people will go against [this idea], but this is what I like; this is what's necessary," she says. "I like to go against the current, to bring spirituality into our modern world. We need to adapt and bring ancient knowledge and wisdom to the platforms that people are using now."

Is the UK, for the first time in its modern history, on the verge of a civil / class war? What are the aggravating factors and what can be expected if the protests continue further down the road?
Is the UK, for the first time in its modern history, on the verge of a civil / class war? What are the aggravating factors and what can be expected if the protests continue further down the road?
COMMENTARY:
Project 2025 was behind Bresit and this white supremacist unrest is being driven by News Corp, who sen Will Lewis to the Wall Street Journal and Washington Post to reconfigure the editorical policy to be congruent with News Corp and the global Nazification that began with the vast right wing conspriacy Hillary Clinton identified and the media poo-pooed.
Steve Bannon was up to his eyeballs with Johnson in Brexit and in the attempt by right wing extremist to hijack the Hong Kong Umbrella Democracy movement, President Xi’s complaint of American interference was perfectly justified because of the US Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong with a bunch of Project 2026 activists churing things up to sabotage Nixon’s China Policy,
In America, this vote comes down to the vote by the Cambridge Union between James Baldwins’ BLM proposal versus William F. Buckley’s “Negro Problem” rebuttal. That debate took place four mounths after the Johnson v Goldwater election, Project 2025 Jijacked Boldwater’s Conservative brand and have proceeded in their Nazification agenda under that banner in America ever since.
You hav Rupert Mrudoch, I mean, in terms of 20–20 hindsite, we now know with absolute Metaphysical clarity why Bush the Elder didn’t go inio Baghdad with Desert Storm.l He’s a Fellow Traveler with Project 2025, We exported Project 2025 to Russia with Merrill Lynch and Supply Side businessmen like Bill Browder and Paul Manafort which became the Nazification Oligarchs who are an existential threat to Russian constitutional authority and Putin, personally, as a individual,
Steve Bannon is in that mix. Murdoch is the turd in the punchbowl of the Commonwealth. Steve Bannon is the John Galt of the January 6 rebellion but Project 2025 started out as being the turn in the punch bowl of Yale University, but it became the turd in the punch bowl of the GOP after the Goldwater campaign and is now the turd in the punch bowl of the world in waiting for either an electoral impossibility or civil war.
Rupert Murdoch is your home-grown Guy Fawkes, You need to treat him on that basis,

Interview: “There is this thing called ‘Timeless and Endless Love’! ”—the humorous and captivating Hong Kong sports commentator Peter Wong Hing Kwei
“長情”(chang ging) is a Chinese expression which means “timeless and endless love”. Writer Honore de Balzac said, “True love is eternal, infinite, and always like itself.” “Chang Ging” is hard to find these days because modern people are self-interested. Everyone has too many considerations to look after.
Peter Wong Hing Kwei (黃興桂), born in 1944, is a famous and popular Hong Kong sports commentator. He was formerly a football coach and manager as well. Peter has served as the head coach of several top-grade football teams like Eastern (東方), South China (南華) and Tsuen Wan (荃灣).
His colourful commentator career covers working for television stations in Hong Kong, Singapore and other parts of the world. Peter is 80 years old. He is still sporty, energetic, sociable, and ready to work. Positive energy is attracted to positive energy and I want to know more about him.
Peter said confidently and pleasantly, “I stick to one principle in my life: being loving and persistent! In view of my family background, I should do business. But I love sports. Here I am! I have served the sporting world particularly football for almost 60 years. I never feel tired and bored. I am thankful for all those wonderful friends and colleagues in the sports industry that have shown me exactly who I want to be!” I asked, “You are a very popular idol in Hong Kong. Why do you often stay in USA?” Peter laughed, “Apart from football for which my love is timeless and endless, the other ‘love target’ is my mother! She is about 100 years old. She is a great woman and my role model. Not a kind of fawning over, I really want to take good care of her until the final day that we can be together. She is in America and so I spend a lot of time with her there. I cook for her every day. Sometimes the best way to a mother’s heart is with the food that a son makes for her!”
I asked Peter another question, “You are also well-known as a witty commentator with a lot of funny catchphrases. How can you do that? Peter thought about it and became amusing again, “I am philosophical! Ha! That is not true! I just want to please my audience and so I put in my two cents’ worth. There are no uninteresting things, only uninterested commentators. The ways to commentate a live sports game are important. For example, you remember the rules of the sport. You memorize the names of the players. You do good research before you are on the air. The other equally important thing is that your program cannot be boring. Your duty is to make the presentation as lively as possible!”
I consulted Peter, “For the first time in this century, Paris will host the Olympic Games. Events get underway in France soon. Spectators looking to watch the 2024 Paris Olympics will have plenty of options from different TV stations. How should they choose? What is a good or bad commentary in sports?” Peter kept up the mystery and said, “Well, my best advice is for one to watch our interview as follows. I will give them an answer!”
Don’t miss my enjoyable interview with Peter Wong! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u59ndJxk_F8

Decline of Culture in Hong Kong - Cantonese Language
Beijing favours Mandarin causing Cantonese to be in decline as it is less popular
History
it is believed that Cantonese originated in the Tang and Song dynasties (618-1276)
Migrants from the central plains region travelled down to the south coast of China to Guangzhou (historically known as Canton)
It is also said that Cantonese could have originated in the Han dynasty (206 BCE- 220 AD) and was a hybrid of the Han language
Cantonese is significantly older than mandarin, the first record of it being spoken is around 220 AD, however Mandarin only came into popularisation around 100 years ago
The capital of China switched from Nanjing to Beijing in the late Ming dynasty and remained as Beijing during the Qing dynasty (1644-1912)
Mandarin is based on a Beijing dialect, it become the official language
Before this, non-standard Mandarin was the most spoken dialect
Modern day
Cantonese is spoken all around the world, for example in Australia, Cantonese is the 5th most spoken language at home
there are nearly 86 million cantonese speakers worldwide
Most speakers are from Guangdong, Guangxi, Hong Kong and Macao
Tumblr media
a lot of older cantonese speakers speak to their children in Mandarin, causing younger people to lose their fluency
in 2021, China promoted a campaign for 85% of their citizens to speak Mandarin by 2025, wanting one national language for national unity
There is a lot of resistance in Hong Kong to speak Mandarin
In Hong Kong, speaking Cantonese is seen as a source of pride and identity
speaking it at home and schools is very important to maintain the numbers - parents have to be willing to pass on the language onto their children
Mandarin is seen as more practical and useful for some as it is seen as guaranteeing a good future
Why do Hong Kongers care so much about Cantonese?
96% of Hong Kong locals speak Cantonese
Cantonese retains more of ancient Chinese vocabulary
Cantonese has 6-9 tones which changes the way you pronounce words, while mandarin only has 6
the name Hong Kong, comes straight from Cantonese - Hoeng Goeng (香港) meaning fragrant harbour
in 1974, laws changed to allow government schools to chose their preferred language between English and Cantonese
there was also equal rights policies put in to people speaking English and Cantonese
in the 1980s, there were more than 300 English speaking secondary schools, but the number dropped in 1997 when the handover occurred to only 100
A lot of people who went to school in the 1980s in Hong Kong can speak both Cantonese and English to a very good level
Speaking Cantonese contains local identity
in 2008, it was promoted to schools to use Mandarin as the primary teaching language to increase students exposure to trilingualism
