King Ecbert had not gotten the chance to meet up with Bishop Heahmund just yet, but he had sent him a request to come join him at the Royal Villa. He liked to know each of the bishops, and people were already talking about this one and how well he did his job.  Before he got there, he climbed into his bath. He always held his most important meetings in his bath, and that had not changed as he had grown older.  He was older, but his mind was still sharp, sharper than he liked to admit.

Hearing the door open, his body was under water, up to his shoulders, as he glanced over. “You have arrived then. Do come in, so we can get to know each other, talk a bit about what your goals are. Feel free to make yourself at home.”

King Ecbert knew everything was in shambles. His family had gotten away, but everything else was in ruins. He should have known that Ragnar Lothbrok would betray him. But despite his betrayal, he had to say that was something that he would have done himself. Despite all of it and how things appeared, there was indeed a twist. He had freed Ragnar from King Aelle’s grasp, before his death. He’d created some fake treaty and he’d pulled him out of there. He’d had him at the Royal Villa ever since, well in theory.

He’d wound up basically holding him up in the tower, and the last he checked, he was still alive. So, he was technically alive. But no one had given him a chance to talk. He’d heard the son that could not walk talk about a blood eagle. He’d heard many different things, but the son that he assumed was one of Ragnar’s older sons, one that moved like his father had when they met, was currently guarding him.

“Hey Son of Ragnar, I know you all seem to be determined to kill me, but what if I have a bit of information that may change your mind, perhaps about your father.”

“Do you remember?” (from ragnar to king ecbert)

    Ecbert hadn’t said much, since Ragnar had told him his plan, how he wanted to die. They’d talked about many things. They’d talked about Heaven, Valhalla, Alfred, Athelstan, etc.  They’d talked about it all. He still was trying to wrap his head around what Ragnar wanted him to do.  He did not want to kill Ragnar.  He had known Ragnar would return one day, avenge the settlement, but he seemed so defeated, like he’d lived his life, now.  

    He looked over at the man in front of him and took a deep breath.  “What exactly are you asking if I remember, the good times, the bad times, or the plan that you think is brilliant, that will end your life?  You are insufferable, Ragnar Lothbrok. I am proud to call you my friend, who is sometimes my enemy, but has anyone ever told you that you are incredibly frustrating?”

   He was betting many people had.
