In June last year, Purola, a small town in Uttarakhand, was in tumult.
A campaign by Hindu right-wing groups demanding that the town be cleared of Muslims had made national headlines. At least 41 families left, with six of them permanently relocating to different parts of Uttarakhand almost overnight.
At the heart of this push by Hindutva groups was the allegation that two men, one of them Muslim, had tried to abduct a 14-year-old girl under the “ruse of marriage” and convert her to Islam.
The campaign kicked off an anti-Muslim frenzy across the Uttarkashi district, where Purola is located, as Hindutva outfits accused the two men – 22-year-old Uvaid Khan and his 24-year-old friend Jitendra Saini – of “love jihad”.
“Love jihad” is a conspiracy theory that accuses Muslim men of being part of an organised plot to trick unsuspecting Hindu women into romantic relationships to ultimately convert them to Islam.
Khan and Saini were not only booked for kidnapping and procurement of a minor under sections of the Indian Penal Code but also for sexual assault under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, or Pocso.
Leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party, which governs the state, stirred up the communal pot with insinuations about “outsiders from a certain community” swamping the hills.
A year later, however, the case against Khan and Saini has collapsed. On May 10, a court in Uttarkashi acquitted both men after it found that the allegations against them were false.

traveling char dham yatra guide
About char dham yatra 2024
Uttarakhand is known as Dev Bhumi (Land of God) as it is home to great pilgrimage sites, sacred temples and a place that attracts millions of pilgrims and spiritual seekers seeking enlightenment. The pilgrimage of the four dams in Garhwal region - Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri - are considered the holiest places in India.
Yamunottri dham yatra
Tumblr media
Located at an altitude of about 3185 m, the sanctuary of Yamunotri is a place of religious importance and an important pilgrimage site for Hindus. Yamunotri is famous for its hot springs and glaciers, which are part of the famous Char Dham Yatra. Yamunotri is the source of the Yamuna River. Legend has it that the revered sage Asit Muni once lived here. The actual source is a frozen lake of ice and glacier (also known as Champasar Glacier, Yamunotri Glacier) on Mount Kalind, about 1 km further upstream, at an altitude of 4421 m. It is not usually visited due to its inaccessibility. That's why the sanctuary was built at the foot of the hill. As access is very difficult, pilgrims offer pooja inside the temple.
Gangotri dham yatra
Tumblr media
Gangotri is the most important religious site among the four Char Dham pilgrimages in Uttarkashi and is closely associated with Goddess Ganga, whom we know as Ganges. Located at an altitude of 3,048 m amidst a forest environment, the sanctuary of Gangotri is one of the most important pilgrimage sites for devout Hindus and exudes an aura of great piety.
kedarnath dham yatra
Tumblr media
Kedarnath is one of the holiest pilgrimage sites of Lord Shiva and is located in Rudraprayag district of Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. Kedarnath is one of the Char dams of Uttarakhand and the most important dam among Panch Kedar. Kedarnath is surrounded by majestic mountain peaks at an altitude of 3586 m and is located near the source of Mandakini river. One of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva stands in the Kedarnath range. Kedar means "powerful" and is another name for Lord Shiva, the protector and destroyer. The beautiful ambience around the temple feels like heavenly peace and it is a beautiful place to meditate. The main tourist attraction here is the Shiva Temple, a popular Hindu shrine and pilgrimage site that attracts devotees from all over the world. Factors such as natural beauty and religious fervor enhance the travel and tourism opportunities here. Shiva is considered to be the embodiment of all passions, including love, hate, fear, death and mysticism, which are expressed in various forms. The region itself has over 200 shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva, the most important of which is Kedarnath.
badrinath dham yatra
Tumblr media
Located between Mount Nar and Mount Narayan, Badrinath Dham is a majestic sight and the most important of all the Char Dhams. Hundreds of thousands of tourists visit this holy city of Badrinath every year to seek blessings and get a glimpse of the famous Shri Badrinath Temple. Badrinath is the only shrine that is a part of both Chhota Char Dham and India Char Dham. Badrinath is one of the four pilgrimage centres in the four corners of India. These include Badrikasram (Badrinath Temple) in the north, Rameshwaram in the south, Dwarkapuri in the west and Jagannathpuri in the east. Bhagavad explains: In Badrikasram, the Supreme Being (Vishnu) incarnated as the sages Nar and Narayan, and has always performed great penances for the benefit of all living beings.

From Apathy to Action – A Community Takes Charge
In 2021, we embarked on a transformative journey in the picturesque village of Doni, nestled in the heart of Uttarkashi. Our mission: to implement a sustainable waste management system. The path was undeniably difficult. We faced the challenges of daunting mountain trails, the absence of community involvement, a lack of awareness and the shadow of caste barriers. Our dream seemed like an insurmountable challenge.
Fast forward to September 2023, we are now proudly serving 640 establishments while operating in six villages within the Uttarkashi district. With five working waste banks and a team of sixteen local champions, we are now leading the charge on waste collection. 80% of the businesses in four of the villages have joined the program, resulting in an outstanding 95% trash segregation rate. This amazing turnaround is a tribute to the perseverance of our community’s heroes, who selflessly crossed caste boundaries to teach their fellow villagers the value of waste management. After two years of continuous community involvement, a unified front surfaced and trust was established. A cleaner environment is being promoted by the community’s acceptance of their part in garbage management.
Tumblr media
Janita Di from Gaichwan village shares: “I didn’t think such a change was possible two years ago. Before, most people would look the other way or get angry when asked about waste. Today, my team proudly collects waste and my community actively supports our work.”
Today, the community actively seeks waste management supplies, signifying a profound shift from apathy to action. This inspiring journey demonstrates the power of perseverance and unity, transforming villages into beacons of sustainability and change. As Waste Warriors continues to expand its reach and impact, it reaffirms its commitment to building a greener, cleaner future for Uttarkashi and beyond.
Our efforts in turning apathy into action have shown that even small steps toward plastic recycling can make a big difference in preserving natural habitats. By implementing waste segregation and recycling initiatives, we help reduce plastic waste that would otherwise end up in landfills or pollute forests and rivers. Through education and hands-on participation, communities are now embracing responsible waste disposal practices, ensuring that their surroundings remain clean and safe for both people and wildlife.
Biodiversity conservation is at the heart of our mission, as unchecked waste pollution poses a severe threat to ecosystems. Plastic waste not only contaminates soil and water sources but also endangers wildlife that mistakenly ingests it. Waste Warriors works closely with local residents and marginalized communities to develop sustainable waste management strategies that protect nature while also providing economic opportunities. By engaging these communities in eco-friendly waste collection and recycling initiatives, we create livelihood options while fostering a deeper understanding of the connection between waste management and environmental conservation.
Tourism is a vital economic driver in many regions, but it must be managed responsibly to ensure long-term sustainability. Waste Warriors advocates for responsible tourism by encouraging visitors, businesses, and local authorities to minimize their waste footprint. We promote sustainable tourism practices such as reducing single-use plastics, setting up waste segregation points, and involving local communities in waste management efforts. By working together, we can create travel experiences that not only support local economies but also protect the pristine landscapes and rich biodiversity that make these destinations worth visiting.

Organic Black Wheat in Dehradun
Black wheat, which is known as Kala Gehun, is fast gaining ground in Dehradun and its surroundings, for its multiple health benefits and ability to raise farmers' incomes. This wheat variety is darker than regular wheat, has high anthocyanins and is a treasure trove of antioxidants that provide it with superior nutrition. Nutritional Benefits Black wheat is loaded with nutrients which give various health benefits: Antioxidants: It contains significantly higher levels of anthocyanins—up to 28 times more than regular wheat. These antioxidants help combat oxidative stress and may reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer. High Fiber Content: The fiber in black wheat aids in digestion, helps regulate blood sugar levels, and contributes to weight management by promoting a feeling of fullness. Rich in Micronutrients: Black wheat is a good source of iron, zinc, magnesium, and B vitamins, all of which are vital for maintaining energy levels and supporting various bodily functions. Agricultural Development in Dehradun In recent years, this black wheat cultivation has been encouraged in Dehradun and also in the surrounding Uttarkashi district as an initiative by the local agriculture department. This is a pilot programme covering 20 villages and should increase the earning of farmers because of the addition of high-value crops such as black wheat to their fields. NABI developed this variety in order to add more value in the market with respect to the standard wheat. Black wheat is in demand at better market prices, whereas traditional wheat's price in the market has declined," comments JP Tiwari, chief agriculture officer of Uttarkashi. While up there in hilly regions, food grains are mostly free and available from government schemes. Therefore, farming black wheat will help farmers garner a better market with diversified crop production. Food Preparations Black wheat is versatile and excellent for use in various applications in the culinary world. It can be used to prepare: Breads and Rotis: Nutritious breads and flatbreads can be prepared using black wheat flour. Pasta and Noodles: Its unique flavor adds a distinct taste to pasta dishes. Baked Goods: Black wheat flour can be added to cakes, pastries, and other baked items, thereby enhancing flavor and nutritional content. Market Availability Black wheat is becoming widely available as knowledge of its health benefits spreads. Local vendors in Dehradun sell black wheat in different varieties, such as whole grains and flour. Apni Maati Trading Solution offers organic black wheat seeds at an affordable price14. The more people look for healthier diets, the more likely they are to want this superfood. Issues and Concerns While the prospects of black wheat are very promising, challenges are there too, which include the following: Cost: Due to limited production and novelty, black wheat can be expensive as compared to regular varieties. Attempts are being made to increase its cultivation and bring it within consumer reach. Consumer Acceptance: Some people might experience the taste and texture being a bit unfamiliar to their normal. Still, through experimentation in recipes, it becomes more assimilated in their diets3. Conclusion Organic black wheat is an enormous advancement both on the agricultural side and nutrition delivery side of Dehradun. The high level of antioxidants and its high fiber content profile also open opportunities to uplift farmers' living standards, which make this crop worthwhile for the region. With local initiatives promoting its cultivation and usage, black wheat can assume a vital role in enhancing food security and health for consumers while generating economic returns for farmers. Accepting this superfood not only facilitates better health results but also underscores the need for agricultural innovation in today's and future dietary needs.

So whether children below 15 years or senior citizens above 55 years old, Dayara Bugyal is one of the perfect trekking destinations in India.
