Utsubora Manga Review
I’ve been collecting manga for a little while now and I do enjoy it a lot. In an effort to branch out and maybe discover something I wouldn’t have otherwise, I asked for manga suggestions on Twitter and got a bunch back. It’s how I discovered Blank Canvas which I really dig. Among the people who kindly came to my aid, there was this one person who ended up giving me a huge list, maybe 4 tweets…

Tales of the Kingdom volume 1 by Asumiko Nakamura
I love Asumiko Nakamura’s art, it’s simply stunning, and I’ve loved a lot of her manga like Classmates, Double Mints and Anata no Tame nara doko Made mo, but sometimes her stories can get too dark for me, like Utsubora and certain stories in Classmates O.B, they leave me with an unpleasant, uneasy feeling. Some of her work has been described as Josei, a genre of manga for older female audience, which in my experience tends to be darker with endings that aren’t fully tragic but are steeped with the tragic aspects of life. And so it is with Tales of the Kingdom. Beautiful art as always, her art flourishes in this fantasy middle eastern world she’s created, but the stories are unsettling, the first borders on twincest and the second sets up a gutting betrayal. When her darker stories are balanced with lighter stories that’s alright but I feel that the forthcoming volumes of Tales of the Kingdom are probably going to be sadness-imbued erotic tragedies. Which is a shame because these are wonderfully stylish hardback books. We’ll see, I’ll read a little more online and maybe buy the volumes if there are occasional stories that end on a happier note.
