Everyone knows me at the dump. I don’t mean this in a bragging sort of way. In fact, I hate this fact. The reason why everyone knows me at the dump is that Mr. Jones, the dump operator, has posted the CCTV footage and blurry cell-phone camera pictures of my face on the break room wall. Even the youngest probie at the dump will look at me, every morning, while they wait for the coffee machine to dispense their mandatory cup of black joy.
You can probably guess why this has happened to me. I love junk, and the dump has a lot of that junk. To me, it is offensive that the dump hoards that junk. They keep it from me, using excuses like “sanitation” and “safety,” but safety is my middle name. If they would just give me a chance, then I would be the best they’ve ever seen. I’d even remove and sort the little lithium-ion vape batteries that haven’t exploded yet, out of gratitude.
Of course, we both know why I’m digging through trash at the dump. I don’t want old Betamax VCRs, or mouldy cardboard boxes heralding products from a bygone era. Well, I do, but I don’t want them more than I want a two-stroke dirt bike, and I’ve seen tons of those over the years get callously tossed into the debris pile by the great unwashed. They’re always getting thrown out for little reasons, like “carb jet plugged,” or “caught on fire,” or “couldn’t get anyone to buy it on Craigslist for septuple the market value so I threw it away out of spite.” I could save these bikes, and to be not allowed to save them is literal torture.
Just like anyone else would in my shoes, I started wearing elaborate disguises to the dump. Sometimes I could loot one, and throw it into the back of my car, and be gone before the dump operators (there weren’t even security guards yet, back then) could catch up to me. I had enough disguises – and enough cars – that I could pull this off for a little while. Then, used cars got really expensive, and the folks in my neighbourhood started using security fasteners to hold on their license plates. I started to escape by tighter and tighter scrapes, until one fateful day.
That bastard Jones figured me out. He came from Chicago, of all places, a city which I’m pretty sure doesn’t even have a dump. And he knew my kind. He set a trap: an agonizingly pristine, 1989 Yamaha XT225. Sure, it was a four-stroke, but it was still love at first sight. It was planted right on top of one of the big piles of disposable diapers, visible even from the highway. Even knowing it was a trap, I made plans for months to grab it.
The joke’s on him, though. I’ve started my own private dump, and I’ve paid the government to start outsourcing dump operations to me. We’re an extremely efficient operation, much more affordable for the taxpayer than the wasteful public dump. How so, you ask? Well, we are much more selective with what waste we accept, and we wrote one helluva contract, which had a bunch of big words that confused the gin-addled politicos that signed it out of desperation to meet their “lower taxes” pledge.
Here’s how it works. We charge the city hundreds of thousands of dollars a month, and we get first pick of any internal combustion engines that are in the back of the garbage trucks. Everything else goes down the road to the regular dump. We’re making a fortune. If we keep putting out numbers like this, I’m sure there will soon be layoffs over at Jones’ shithole. Hell, maybe I’ll even hire him to manage security around these parts. Can’t have anyone walking off with my good trash.

Chapter 1: Nozomi Kasaki is Unlucky (Part 4)
What stopped Natsuki’s long recollection was the melody of an electric guitar that sounded like the whinny of a horse. When they went to karaoke, this was always what came last. Natsuki opened the soft case she had brought in, placing the electric guitar atop her knees. If she connected the guitar to the karaoke machine with a shield cable, it quickly transformed into an instant live venue.
Karaoke these days was really convenient, since you could tune your instruments, and even customize effects. On top of that, displaying the guitar chords on the monitor meant it could be used as a substitute music stand.
What a perfect place it was to spend this moratorium period in January, on the cusp of graduation. There was no one who would mind no matter how much noise they made, and any way they chose to spend their time was allowed.
The guitar Natsuki held in her arms was a Yamaha Pacifica 112V, and its color was Old Violin Sunburst. Its glossy dark brown got darker the closer it got to the edges. Natsuki had received it from her older cousin, and it was her first electric guitar.
And sitting next to Natsuki was Yuuko, who had a differently colored version of the same guitar model. The one she was using was in Vintage White. Even though it had the same shape as her guitar, the design used ivory as its main color.
Yuuko had bought this guitar after that summer. The two of them had gone to a music store. Thinking back on it now, that had been the first time they had gone somewhere with just the two of them. Natsuki had responded to Yuuko’s request of “For the moment, I want a cute one,” by recommending the same guitar model as her own.
Had she planned to follow Natsuki’s advice from the beginning? Yuuko had promptly made her decision, breaking into her savings from her new year’s gift money and buying a guitar set that had tens of thousands of yen. It had come with necessary items for beginners like a mini amp and a tuner, a shield cable, and a strap.
The awkward movements of Yuuko’s fingers in the beginning had, after two years, come to the point where they looked good. Perhaps the speed at which Yuuko had absorbed it had been because Natsuki had been skillful at teaching her, or because of her natural musical sense. It felt good to have the upper hand and take on the role of a teacher, but it was much more fun now that they were able to play together with an equal relationship.
Natsuki enjoyed the sensation of sliding her fingers across the six strings. Fat strings, thin strings. By adding just a bit of stimulation, the difference became absolutely clear.
“What should we play? It might be good to practice the graduation song.”
Finishing her tuning, Yuuko played the strings with her pick. Their twang resounded strongly through the speakers.
Natsuki had started the guitar in her second year of middle school. Her cousin, who had formed a band in university, had taken the opportunity of getting a job to buy a new guitar, giving her the guitar she had been using up until that point. The reason her cousin had bought an electric guitar instead of an acoustic guitar had been because, in her not-properly-soundproof room, she had been able to practice by plugging headphones into the guitar.
The melody directly rattling your eardrums through headphones was wonderful, but freeing your ears to hear the guitar felt even better. The tingling vibrations directly reached your skin, sending shivers all the way down to the pit of your stomach.
“The graduation song, huh, I haven’t really liked it for a while.”
“That’s cause you’re twisted, Natsuki.”
“To put it simply, I can’t relate to songs that say nice things.”
“There’s no way that only bad things are the truth, though. It’s just easier to look like you mean it when you have bad intentions.”
“As expected of the president, you sure know how to say it.”
“You’re making fun of me, aren’t you.”
“It’s what I really think.”
Yuuko sniffed. Her legs, dangling from the sofa, crossed and tightened inward.
Would she shed tears at her high school graduation ceremony? Like Nozomi had that time.
As hard as she tried, she couldn’t imagine her own face as she cried, so Natsuki gazed at Yuuko’s side profile as she fiddled with the karaoke control panel. When the music started, the room became darker. The contours of Yuuko’s smooth cheeks were illuminated by the colorful light spilling from the screen.
After their graduation ceremony would be their university’s entrance ceremony. Natsuki would be going to the same school as Yuuko and Nozomi, so their drifting apart didn’t feel quite real. Since Nozomi had come back to the concert band in their second year, the four of them had pretty much been together. They had been about to fall into the delusion that these normal days would continue endlessly, but every time the topic of Mizore’s college of music came up, they knew that that was an illusion.
Mizore would be taking the entrance exam for a college of music. Even if Nozomi wasn’t there.
“Hahhh.”
Yuuko asked the deeply sighing Natsuki, “What’s up?” with a fed-up face. Placing the tablet atop the table, she faintly narrowed her eyes. Not particularly liking the gaze that seemed to be seeing through everything, Natsuki purposefully made her voice more cheerful.
“Just wondering what clubs we’ll join when we go to university.”
“Nozomi was saying she’d join the orchestra club.”
“She would do something like that, that girl loves the flute.”
“What are you gonna do, Natsuki?”
“Hmm.”
Cradling her guitar, Natsuki rested her chin in her hands. She had no intention of continuing with the same instrument the way Nozomi did. That was because she had already been satisfied by her time in the concert band. Natsuki and the others’ generation had left behind spectacular results in both their second and their years, and she had gone all out in her job as the vice president, completely out of character for her. Perhaps the most fitting expression for it was that she had become burned out.
Yes, Natsuki was burned out. She still loved the euphonium now, as well as concert band. But beyond that, she didn’t want to try her hardest in that way ever again. She was tired.
“How about you, Yuuko?”
At her question, Yuuko grasped the guitar in her hands as though she were hugging it tight.
“I want to play guitar.”
“Like now?”
“Even more than now.”
“Is the president cheating with light music?”
“It’s not cheating, I truly love both of them.”
Holding the strings down with her fingers, Yuuko strummed the guitar with her purple pick. Mixing in with the sounds flowing from the TV monitor, the impromptu music came to life in the narrow space. Yuuko always played the guitar so enjoyably. Her small lips beat out the “la la la”s of a nameless melody.
How was it for Natsuki? She liked playing the guitar, but that was all. She wasn’t thinking she wanted to be a pro, nor did she think she could.
In the bass section, there had been a kouhai in the year below her from a powerhouse school. She had been in charge of the concert band’s single string instrument, the contrabass. It didn’t suit her small figure, that two-meter-tall instrument. But, in defiance of the gap in size, her kouhai had shown off her performing skills with an innocent smile. It had been amazing. It had been overwhelming.
When that girl had played the guitar at a concert, she had honestly been shocked. Because she had been on a similar string instrument, letting the contrabass girl play the guitar had been an easy decision. Her kouhai had laughed, “They made me play it in middle school a lot too,” looking unfazed at the high-level sheet music she was playing.
Why on earth was it that she continued to play guitar herself even when she had realized that was what you would call genius? The earth was overflowing with both geniuses and hard workers, so a regular person like herself sometimes lost sight of the meaning of why she was playing music at all.
“Ah, it’s your favorite band.”
Natsuki consciously raised her gaze from where it had fallen at Yuuko’s words. Antwerp Blue had appeared on the information channel being broadcast to the karaoke room. They were talking about the new music that Natsuki had just bought. Every time the vocalist said something, the young female MC would interject exaggeratedly.
“I wanted to make a song that the listeners would think is fun to listen to.”
The vocalist calmly spun his words as he showed white teeth appropriate for a performer. It wasn’t as though they really needed to care what the people listening to them thought. Just seeing the members enjoying themselves was fun for Natsuki.
“I really like their new song.”
Yuuko said this carelessly while pointing to the screen. Natsuki gave a wry smile, thinking that their interests really were direct opposites of one another.
Their footsteps on the way home from karaoke were slower than usual. This was because the guitars they carried were heavy. In the end, today Natsuki and Yuuko had stayed at the karaoke place from 10:00, when it had opened, until 7:00, when free time had ended. Since it was cheap, oftentimes they’d unexpectedly come across other Kitauji students. When they had run into a concert band first-year once, their amazed words of “You are getting along well as usual, President and Vice President” had been a bit baffling. Mainly the “as usual” part.
“Nozomi didn’t do guitar even up to the very end.”
As Natsuki mumbled this, Yuuko said somewhat sulkily, “She’s devoted to the flute.” Yuuko had reached out to her several times about whether or not she would start the guitar, but Nozomi had turned them down every time. Though she was kind to everyone regardless of who they were, she had some unexpectedly stubborn parts as well.
Her exhaled white breath. Natsuki looked up at the sky as snow blew in her line of sight. It was wet snow with a lot of moisture in it. By the time the snowflakes fell to the ground, they had almost entirely melted into droplets of water. If it had been raining, she’d have opened her umbrella, but since it was snow, perhaps it wasn’t worth bothering. Watching a pattern of water droplets forming on Yuuko’s coat, Natsuki rubbed her elbows.
“You two going home from somewhere?”
Yuuko called out as she dashed forward towards something she had found. Beyond her waving hand were Nozomi and Sumire. So Nozomi’s previous plans had been with Sumire. Nozomi and Sumire both laughed together at the sight of Natsuki dashing after Yuuko.
“You two are always together, Natsuki and Yuuko,” Sumire said with a grin.
“It’s not like we always are, though. Anyway, where are you two going?”
Casually denying this, Yuuko countered them with the same query. Digging through her shoulder bag, Nozomi took out a flier, saying, “Here.” The yellow rectangular paper was printed with the name of a cafe in a rather fashionable font.
“What’s this?”
“We were checking out venues. We’re going to hold an event here.”
Sumire answered Natsuki’s question. Yuuko blinked in surprise. “An event.”
“The five of us formed an instrumental band when we quit the concert band, didn’t we? So we were thinking of renting this cafe with just our band to do an event celebrating graduation. Tickets are 500 yen per person, so if we invite about 40 friends, we can pay for it.”
“Nozomi, aren’t you not involved with the light music club?”
“I’m just tagging along because it seems interesting. Since Sumire and the others are working so hard, I want to cheer them on.”
“When I asked Nozomi to be a part of the band, she rejected me.”
Sumire said this in a voice that didn’t suggest any sad feelings at all. Nozomi lightly lowered her eyebrows.
“After all, there’s only five members in Reticle, right? There’s no way I could suddenly step in.”
“You could just participate as a guest.”
“If I were going to participate, I think it would just be as a staff member. I’m sure there’s a lot to help out with.”
“Nozomiii! What a nice girl you are, that would be a huge help!”
Sumire clung to Nozomi with a theatrical exclamation. Sumire was always high-energy, and Nozomi laughed with her mouth wide open.
“Reticle” was the name of the instrumental band that Sumire and the others had formed. Since it was made of five members who had quit the concert band, it was made up of a drummer, a keyboard player, a trumpet player, a sax player, and a trombone player. They were entirely devoted to playing jazz, and even appeared in events outside of school.
“Ah, anyway, why not ask Natsuki and Yuuko?”
The carefree, laughing Nozomi suddenly turned her focus on them. “For what?” Natsuki asked, tilting her head. Sumire, having abandoned her, clapped her hands together in delight.
“That might be a good idea!”
“No, what do you mean?”
“We’re looking for a band to do the opening act for our event! Just having our band play for two hours feels kinda lacking, so we were wondering if someone else could also come out. See, if we had someone singing, it would really get everyone pumped up.”
“No, we don’t really know any bands ourselves, though?”
Though it was a very direct answer, Sumire let out a shout of laughter as though she had said something funny.
“What are you saying. You and Yuuko should come perform, Natsuki. On your twin guitars.”
“Huuuuuh?”
Natsuki and Yuuko’s exclamations harmonized perfectly. In the interlude, Nozomi unnecessarily said, “Perfectly in sync.”
“Kids from Minami Middle will be coming too, so I’m sure they’ll be happy to see you having fun, Natsuki, Yuuko. How about it, a two-piece band?”
How about it, Natsuki had never had the urge to form a band with Yuuko before. Nozomi grasped Natsuki’s arm as she was about to immediately refuse, smiling innocently at her.
“Should be good. I know the concert band kids will also be happy to see the President and Vice President combo!”
President and Vice President. Though they were her and Yuuko’s titles, being thought of that way by Sumire made her feel a bit uneasy. Surely, to Sumire, the words “president of the concert band” would still point to Nozomi.
The continuation of the cut-off recollections she had had earlier was both a bad end and a happy end. The year after Sumire and Nozomi and the others quit the band, the new music teacher and advisor Taki had come to Kitauji High School to replace Rikako-sensei when she had gone on maternity leave. He was the exact opposite type from before, a presence that combined the high schoolers’ expectations and nightmares as a Spartan and handsome and capable instructor.
In the beginning, he had been called horrible things like “the devil” and “ogre,” but Taki had painted over the club’s lazy atmosphere before their eyes. He really had amazing skill. It was enough to make you laugh dryly, since what had the struggles of the members who had quit even been for?
Nozomi had returned to the concert band the summer of their second year. Kitauji, which had been a weak school, had been confirmed as an entrant in the Kansai Competition, and the 55 A members had already been decided. Seeing Kitauji being reborn, Nozomi had quit the adult concert band circle and decided to come back to the concert band. Of course, she hadn’t been able to participate in that year’s competition.
If Nozomi hadn’t quit the club, surely the future would have been different. She would have been absorbed into the center of the club, and would have been able to put her quick wits to good use without any regrets. She might even have been the club president instead of Yuuko. Thinking of Yuuko being the vice president supporting her made her resent how rich her own imagination was.
Even though Nozomi became a concert member when they became third years, even though they got results at the Kansai Competition, guilt haunted the deepest part of Natsuki’s heart.
Because, at that time, the one who had pushed Nozomi had unmistakably been Natsuki.
She should have told her to stay in the club. She should have said, with a hell of an expression, there’s no one else who loves concert band more than you. But that was all in the past.
She was slightly startled by the coldness of the snow that plopped right onto the tip of her nose. She realized how far they had come since the crossroads that summer had been. Natsuki exhaled in a puff of white breath with no lingering regrets as Sumire put her hands together, asking “Please!”
Any sentimentality that she held might possibly have been contempt.
“That might be nice, a band.”
As Natsuki nodded, Sumire raised both hands in a show of overexaggerated happiness.
“Don’t go deciding things on your own.”
White snowflakes fell on Yuuko’s bangs as she puffed out her cheeks. Trying to catch them between her thumb and pointer finger, Yuuko brought her eyebrows together even more discontentedly.
“Nice, now you’ve also gotten motivated for real, haven’t you?”
“Doing it in and of itself is okay. It’s not that, it pisses me off that you decided this on your own, Natsuki.”
“What a pain.”
“What was that?”
“Seeeee, Yuuko-chan. Let’s form a band together, ‘kay?”
“Excuse me, I’m not a five-year old kid, though?”
Natsuki was swayed by this feigned grumpiness. That was because she now knew that that was Yuuko’s way of indulging her.
“Seriously, you two get along so well.”
Natsuki stole a glance at Nozomi’s profile as she said this with a light tone. It was always only in a single moment when Nozomi showed a sign of melancholy.
The edges of her lips lifted, and with a glimpse of her white teeth, the usual pleasant smile returned to Nozomi’s face.
“I’ll also cheer you on with Mizore.”
Yuuko responded to Nozomi’s words with “It can’t be helped” in a not-at-all-bad voice. Feeling the weight of the guitar on her back, Natsuki re-wound the scarf that was getting warm around her neck.
The fact that she wasn’t carrying a euphonium was just a little lonely.
Chapter 1  Nozomi Kasaki is unlucky.
(Maybe that’s also a likable part of her)

Hello!!! For the ship ask I'd love to request Cu (any one) x Seiba im very interested to learn more on their relationship!!
From the ask meme id like to pick "what was their first impressions of one another" and "who initiated it" ! Thank you, I wish you a great day :3
CĂș Alter x Arturia Modern AU (mwhahahaha edit: i uhhh got carried away ;u; )
Pre relationship 2 What was their first impression of each other?
They met at an Auto-detailing shop. CĂș Alter was waiting on his Harley when he caught sight of a Yamaha V-Max getting buffed at the other end of the shop. He hadn't seen one recently, so he went to check it out. From what he could tell, it wasn't used very often, but whoever it belonged to tried to maintain it anyway.
Since the detailing was going to take a while, he went off to the airconditioned lobby to get a drink from the vending machine, where he found the stiffest looking, tiniest female in the world (not a hair...ah, one hair out of place, perfect natural makeup, expensive pressed clothes) glaring at an iced coffee that had gotten stuck. He thought she was some rich person's secretary or something, the poor thing sent over to this side of town to get bumper stickers or the like.
Anyway he thudded his palm onto the machine, dislodged the drink and told her to move. She was obviously a little irked at his tone, but for his kindness, she gave what was left of her bill to him instead of getting the change, saying "You have my gratitude."
Who tf says "You have my gratitude." in this day and age?
Anyway, he thought she was rather rigid. Even walked like it. Imagine his surprise when he went back out to find her claiming the very Yamaha V-Max he was admiring earlier on. She had to undo her bun to put on her helmet, and that was the first time of many she made Alter's breath catch.
Arturia, instead of literally every piercing and tattoo he had on his exposed skin, managed to register that his eyes were crimson. She'd never seen that before. She'd actually watched CĂș Alter hovering around her bike earlier, but not touching it, so he thought he'd strike up conversation when he came to the lobby. Apparently not. Maybe he was just a quiet person. She dismissed him as a stranger she'd never meet again.
General 1 Who initiated the relationship, and how did it go?
CĂș did. He saw her seven times more in different parts of the city across three months, but never with her bike. And she always had company, which pissed him off a little because they never got past their gazes locking and recognition.
Fucking finally, one of her friends dragged her into his bar, still wearing the same stiff suits as always. The instant she sat down, he put a drink the color of his eyes on the counter, slid it to her and said.
"I'm getting real tired of calling you "shortie" in my head."
"I have been calling you 'Harley'. That was yours, wasn't it, the Low Rider?"
He raised an eyebrow.
"Arturia. My name is Arturia."
They shake hands, there's a lot of bike talk, and at in the wee hours of the morning, he asks her out (not propositions her, asks her out. Fuck, he hasn't done that since college) before she leaves with her friend who he literally didn't even remember.
That's how it started. They never really called what they were doing a relationship, but y'know.
tysm for the ask! :)

Stan Ridgway is best remembered as the guy from Wall of Voodoo, and Wall of Voodoo are best remembered as the guys from “Mexican Radio.” But there’s a whole lot more to Ridgway’s solo career, which began with 1986â€Čs The Big Heat--Americana, epic narratives, and a whole lot of digital synth. (Transcript below the break!)
Welcome to Passionate Reply, and welcome to Great Albums! Today, we’ll be looking at an often overlooked solo debut: Stan Ridgway’s The Big Heat, first released in 1986.
Stan Ridgway is best remembered as the original frontman of Wall of Voodoo, and Wall of Voodoo, in turn, are best remembered for the single “Mexican Radio,” a landmark bit of New Wave eclecticism that became an unlikely hit thanks in large part to heavy rotation on MTV. That said, like a lot of ostensible “one-hit wonders,” the span of Ridgway’s artistic career is quite a bit more varied and more interesting than this solitary recording might suggest. While I don’t believe that “Mexican Radio” is simply a novelty song that can easily be dismissed, I will set it aside for the time being, because any attempt to cover the rest of Stan Ridgway’s work is probably better off without worrying about it. Instead, let’s take a look at his first bona fide solo release: the 1983 single, “Don’t Box Me In.”
Music: “Don’t Box Me In”
“Don’t Box Me In” was a collaboration between Ridgway and percussionist Stewart Copeland, then known chiefly for his work with the group The Police. While Copeland is now fairly well known for his work composing scores for cinema and video games, this was one of his first forays into that field: the soundtrack to Francis Ford Coppola’s film adaptation of Rumble Fish. Based on a novel by S. E. Hinton, most famous for The Outsiders, Rumble Fish was actually a tremendous flop for Coppola, perceived to be a bit too avant-garde for its own good, and Copeland’s percussion-led score for the film, experimental in its own right, certainly didn’t help that perception. Despite all of this, “Don’t Box Me In” managed to do fairly well for itself as a single, achieving substantial alternative radio play purely on its own merits. And merits it has, weaving together the experience of a fish trapped in a tiny bowl with a more universalized sense of human ennui, being overlooked and underestimated by everyone around you. Not to be underestimated himself, Ridgway has not only written these evocative lyrics, but delivers them in a manner that shows a complexity beyond his semi-affected Western twang, conveying fragility and uncertainty alongside indignation and determinedness. This is also the version of Stan Ridgway whom we meet when we listen to The Big Heat.
Music: “Camouflage”
Despite being the very last single released from The Big Heat, the eerie war yarn “Camouflage” would go on to be the most successful track from the album, and Ridgway’s best-known hit as a solo artist. Perhaps surprisingly, the single was largely snubbed in the charts of Ridgway’s native USA, becoming a much bigger hit throughout Europe. While playing the harmonica and sporting a bolo tie, Ridgway seems to almost play the character of the quintessential American, and perhaps it’s that quality that’s caused this apparent rift. Is it necessary to analyze his art through the lens of exoticism in order to find it appealing?
It’s a hard question for me to answer, personally--I might be from the US myself, but at the same time, the vast majority of the music I listen to is European, as a natural consequence of being chiefly a devotee of electronic music. There is still a sort of novelty factor I find in Ridgway’s work. I remain in awe of the fact that a musical genius exists who uses a hard R, and says “huh?” instead of “pardon me?” But, of course, I am amazed by this moreso because it makes me feel “represented,” for once, in a musical tradition which is important to me. If people from Britain’s crumbling industrial centers like Sheffield and Manchester have made great electronic music, then surely synthesisers can also tell the stories of the American Rust Belt, where I come from? For that, we’ll have to step away from the sort of typified narrative of “Camouflage,” and take a listen to the album’s title track.
Music: “The Big Heat”
“Camouflage” told us a tale as old as time, in which a benevolent ghost offers one last act of aid to a vulnerable human being. The album’s title track, on the other hand, alludes to a particularly 20th Century form of storytelling: the detective drama and film noir, as hinted at by its allusion to the classic Fritz Lang film of the same title. Ridgway assumes the perspective of the hardboiled detective, hot on the trail of some mysterious quarry, and it is the innocent passers-by he seeks information from who respond with the song’s banal refrain: “Everybody wants another piece of pie today.” For as much as people have mocked Ridgway’s singing style over the years, you’ve got to appreciate his lilting delivery of this line here in the first verse, where it comes from the mouth of a female character.
It’s easy, of course, to see such apparent non sequitur lyrics in Ridgway’s oeuvre as merely ridiculous, as many quickly do with the likes of “Mexican Radio,” but the more you listen to him, the more his style begins to make sense. The instinct to find humour in things is deeply connected to the feeling of being surprised, and encountering the unexpected. Ridgway happens to be all about delivering the unexpected, and it’s precisely the surface-level absurdities and surprises his lyricism offers that make us think more deeply about the stories he tells. The title track of The Big Heat isn’t about pie, but rather the fact that everybody its characters encounter appears to be grasping for more out of life, and hungry for something else. It’s what drives criminals to transgress against the law, and it’s also, perhaps, what drives the detective to devote himself to the pursuit of the abstract principle of “justice.” To both the villain and the hero of this story, the civilians they brush past are little more than means to an end, despite their display of greater wisdom and insight into these issues than anyone else. Ridgway excels at conveying this sort of saintly everymannishness, and does so with similar gusto on the track “Pick It Up (And Put It In Your Pocket)”.
Music: “Pick It Up (And Put It In Your Pocket)”
“Pick It Up (And Put It In Your Pocket)” was actually not released as a single, which is perhaps surprising given its hooky quality and sprightly synth backdrop. While “Camouflage” is assembled chiefly from traditional instruments, with only a subtle intrusion of Yamaha DX-7 to remind you that it came out in 1986, many of the other tracks, like this one and the title track, are willing to double down on electronic influences, and ride the wave of “peak synth-pop” that was easily cresting by the mid-1980s. That aside, the central theme of “Pick It Up (And Put It In Your Pocket)” is the quotidian avariciousness one encounters among ordinary folk, and the psychological effects of living in a “mean world.” While the text mostly revolves around the idea of living in fear, and the paranoia of knowing that “everything changes hands when it hits the ground,” it reaches a climax by showing us an actual situation where this occurs: the pathetic figure of a filthy old man who finds a small bill in the road, and, in a fit of folk superstitiousness, is said to “thank the street.” The song’s tension lives between the bustle of the jealous ones, and the reality of life for those desperate enough to pick up money from the street. Like many of Ridgway’s greatest works, this track simultaneously portrays the mentality of the common man in a direct and serious manner, but also opens up room for it to be criticized. This everyman bystander persona is assumed more directly in the track “Drive, She Said.”
Music: “Drive, She Said”
While the album’s more electronic elements are its main draw, in my eyes, there are still a number of tracks that remain dominated by traditional instruments, “Drive, She Said” being a prime example of them. While narratives are always at the center of Ridgway’s work, “Drive, She Said” moves us away from omniscient narration like that of “Pick It Up (And Put It In Your Pocket)” and back into the mind of a specific and individualized narrator--in this case, a cab driver who somewhat reluctantly transports a bank robber, with whom he might also be falling in love. While it doesn’t have the supernatural implications of “Camouflage,” the two stories do seem to have much in common: an ordinary person meets someone who quickly reveals their extraordinary nature, and despite the brevity of their encounter, the protagonist is deeply affected, and perhaps changed, by the events. Much as “Pick It Up (And Put It In Your Pocket)” sees fit to shatter its apparent main premise, with an interlude that shifts the tempo of the music as well as introduces the contrasting figure of the old beggar, “Drive, She Said” introduces an interlude of its own: the driver’s reverie, in which he runs away with his enigmatic passenger. As in many of Ridgway’s tales, we must consider both the beauty of a wonderful dream, and its sheer impossibility.
On the cover of The Big Heat, we see a portrait of Stan Ridgway looking glum, which is not itself terribly unusual for an album cover, though the fact that he’s behind a metal fence certainly is. The main focus of the image seems to be Ridgway’s environment, a bleak industrial setting full of towering machinery, and no other traces of human beings. The absence of other figures in this scene draws attention to the scale of the machines, as well as the fact that in many parts of the US, including my own, it’s very common to see equipment like this that’s fallen into disuse and disrepair. Much as ruined aqueducts and palaces mark the places in Europe where the Roman Empire had once held fast, these sorts of derelict manufacturing facilities are a common sight in America, and serve as reminders of the squandered “American Century.” While many album covers have shown me places I like to imagine myself visiting, I don’t have to imagine what being here might be like, having grown up in a place whose pride left soon after the steel industry did. It strikes me as exactly the kind of setting that Ridgway’s narratives ought to take place in: dirty, simple, well-intentioned, doomed, and all-American.
Ridgway’s follow-up to The Big Heat would be 1989’s *Mosquitos,* an album that largely abandons the many synthesiser-driven compositions found in his earlier work. It’s hard to fault him for this decision, given how much the mainstream appeared to be souring on synth-pop and electronic rock by the end of the decade, but it does mean that this album offers little I’d want to listen to recreationally. That is, with the exception of its third and final single, “Goin’ Southbound,” a practically epic drama of small-town drug smugglers trying to survive, and one that fires on all cylinders when it comes to fiddles dueling with digital synths. This track feels like it would fit right in on The Big Heat, so if you’ve enjoyed this album, don’t miss it.
Music: “Goin’ Southbound”
My favourite track on The Big Heat is “Salesman,” which, to my surprise, received a small advance promo release without ever becoming a true single. The titular character, an unctuous but insecure traveling salesman, is as rich a narrating persona as any of the many in Ridgway’s catalogue, and I love the way the refrain just feels like a song you might make up while idly doing something else, silly and yet primal at the same time. It captures the feeling of living “on the edge of the ball,” enjoying the freedom of spontaneity, but also, perhaps, suffering for its enforced sloppiness. That’s everything for today, thanks for listening!

Why choose a leading SMT nozzle manufacturer?
The scrapping of the SMT nozzle manufacturer is often caused by being dirty or related accidents. After using the compressed air cleaner, the problem can be solved fundamentally and the nozzle can be recycled. Original nozzles are expensive, most of which cost more than a thousand dollar. In the long run, the economic benefits are considerable.
Reduce unnecessary labor
The traditional cleaning method requires a lot of manual processing. After using a compressed air cleaner, one person can complete the work of everyone from now on, and it is done better and faster!
Reduce the defective rate of the product
The dirty suction of the nozzle is not easy to cause the sliding and throwing of components, which will increase the defective rate of the product.
Improve SMT production efficiency
Proper cleaning keeps the nozzle in a brand new state to work, avoiding identification errors and greatly increasing productivity.
As the leading SMT nozzle manufacturer, we can make many types and brand nozzle, such as special nozzle, such as Samsung nozzle, Panasonic nozzle, Yamaha nozzle, Juki nozzle and Fuji nozzle.
Nozzles are the first and last thing to touch all components placed onto a PCB. Pick-and-place nozzles can move tens of thousands of parts every hour (comprising a placement machine’s components per hour or CPH rating). With electronic component sizes reaching microscopic proportions, nozzle manufacturers must strive to maintain precision tolerances and exact dimensions in their designs. These nozzles are required to hold the part during transport to the board while the machine is moving and/or rotating at high speeds. The lack of proper nozzle maintenance and/or poor-quality nozzles will lead to part issues, machine issues, and other process problems.
Five Major Maintenance Problems at the Pick-and-place Machine
Each stage of the placement process must be executed repeatedly without failure. Careful review of these processes has determined the following five major issues associated with improper nozzle maintenance and/or the use of poor quality nozzles.
Tumblr media
Loss of vacuum - Vacuum loss may be responsible for some issues, as it can prevent the nozzle from picking up a component from the feeder. It also could cause components to shift on the nozzle during transport. One of the main reasons for less suction and vacuum power loss is that nozzle quality is not maintained during the manufacturing process. The quality and structure of the nozzle must match the component(s) it is designed to place. Another issue related to loss of vacuum is poor pick-up location on the component. Poor-quality nozzles can cause extra fatigue on the pick-and-place equipment as it must constantly acclimatize to maintain efficiency.

Savior, Bloodstain, Hellfire, Shadow Ch8 V x Reader
Chapter 8 - A Taste of Heaven
NSFW
____________________________________
May 30th, 3:12 pm
As V touches down, his snow-white hair fading back to black, he loses his balance and falls to one knee. You’re still standing where he left you, having watched the entire display of raw, unrestrained power from a safe distance. Now, you run towards him in concern. Despite the last few days of his sullenness and almost total disregard of you, you are drawn to him by an almost electric pull.
“V!” You gasp out as you reach him, leaning down to help him stand. “Are you alright?”
He ignores your arms reaching out to help him rise and utter agony flashes across his face as he grunts, straining to lift his own body weight and favoring his injured left side heavily.
“I’m fine,” he mutters stubbornly.
Your vision swims as rage overtakes you at his words. He just single handedly wiped out eleven Empusa and a Queen, something you would have needed hours to accomplish, if you even could, then collapses, and expects you to accept that he’s fine?!
 Like. HELL.
You tremble with the force of your anger as the silence and painful lack of contact with V over the last few days overwhelms you, vision going red as you reach forward to land a hard smack across his cheek. His eyes widen as he recoils, lips parting in shock as he almost falls to the ground, but he manages to stay upright as you scream at him.
“What the actual FUCK, V?! You are NOT FINE! Goddamnit, I’m here to help you stay alive, not watch you exhaust yourself to the point of near death! LET ME HELP YOU or I swear to GOD, I will punch you in the throat so hard Nightmare will feel it from your fucking gorgeous HAIR!!!”
You pause, breathing hard as your rage cools from a boil to a simmer in your gut. V looks at you through his silky hair you so enjoyed touching and smirks. SMIRKS!
“You think my hair is gorgeous?” he asks you innocently.
You shove him in the chest and he staggers, catching himself with his cane before he falls. You give him your very best Death Glare, with capital letters thank you very much, and he starts laughing!
The sound almost, almost, shakes you out of your rage.
“This isn’t funny, V! I know you’re some badass devil hunter summoner and you probably have a fourth fucking summon hidden in your goddamn EYELASHES, but – goddamn it stop laughing!”
He struggles for a moment but finally stops laughing. He looks at you earnestly, the most heartfelt look he’s given you in days. Your anger deflates, retreating into a sharp sadness as you wonder what’s been going on in his head to have made him treat you so coldly.
His eyes narrow and he bites his lip, looking away, and you realize you must’ve asked that question out loud. Refusing to retreat, you cross your arms and wait for him to answer you and prepare another slap if he says something stupid.
“Y/N
” he shifts his weight, clearly uncomfortable with what he needs to say. “I apologize for my behavior. I have not been
myself since I was injured. I don’t do well when I feel powerless. There are things about me I cannot tell you, but going forward I will treat you with more kindness. Can you forgive me?”
You growl deep in the back of your throat, not satisfied with his half-answer. “That doesn’t answer my question, V. What’s going on with you?”
He looks at his feet, hiding his emerald gaze from you behind his hair.
“I
I allowed my frustration to get the better of me. We’re running out of time to catch up, and it gets under my skin. I
believed our interactions to be a distraction that would slow us down even further, and I can’t allow any further delays. Again, I apologize.”
You huff, still not satisfied but realizing that’s the most straightforward answer you’re going to get. There’s still one last question he has to answer before you move on, though.
You reach out, not daring to even breathe as you rest your hand on his shoulder. He looks up at you again, waiting. You bite your lower lip, terrified of his answer but needing to know all the same.
“Do you really think this
 I
am just a distraction and nothing more?”
You realize you’re crying again as you watch his face, searching for any shred of fondness or affection for you. His face shifts back to the flat, dead arrangement of his features he’s worn for the last few days and your heart breaks for an instant before his eyes fill with tenderness and his mouth twists into the tiniest of smiles. Your heart soars as he speaks.
“You are so much more that a distraction to me,” he finally responds, reaching out to tuck a lock of hair behind your ear and you smile gently at him, hesitantly leaning into his touch. It feels magical to have his skin on yours again, even just this small contact makes you dizzy with relieved tension and eased fears.
“Then I forgive you. Just DON’T. DO IT. AGAIN.” You punctuate the last few words with pokes to his chest and he strokes your cheek with his thumb, wiping away the remnants of your tears as he speaks.
“Never.”
____________________________________
Barely a half hour later, recognition stirs within your mind as you turn down a new street.
I know this place

You walk a little faster, V doing his best to keep up as you stride to a familiar building. He frowns as he reads the sign aloud.
“Frank’s Bar and Grill? Why have we stopped here?”
“I used to work here and I think there may be something here to lift your spirits.”
You smile, spotting exactly what you were hoping to see in the parking lot. You push the door open and it thankfully opens; the demons appeared during business hours, it seems. V follows you inside the dark bar and pauses, waiting for his eyes to adjust. You know the bar well enough to not need to pause; the familiar booths and motorcycle memorabilia greeting you through the darkness like an old friend. You carefully pick your way behind the bar, arms outstretched just in case someone left a bar stool too far out or something. Your hand slides down the wooden bar, feeling the familiar grain of the oak under your fingertips until you reach the register. You duck down, looking beneath the counter and find what you’d been looking for – keys. You also take a moment to stow a couple mostly-full bottles in your bag with a mischievous smirk.
You stand up, triumphantly jangling the keys for V to hear.
“You’re about to feel so, so much better
”
As you walk back to V, you spot a long piece of shiny metal on your right. You smile and pick it up, glad to finally have a more suitable weapon. You give the metallic baseball bat a few swings, then head to V and lead him back into the sunshine outside, hastily wrapping the strap of your bag around the bat to free your hands.
The keys turn out to be for an old Yamaha motorcycle, dark blue and decorated with several tasteless stickers. The backseat is small and doesn’t have a back to it so V won’t be able to lean back. You grin at him as you climb into the driver’s seat and turn the key, the engine roaring to life. You chuckle as he jumps slightly at the sound and you toss him a helmet.
“See V? Told you we’d find a way to catch up. Look, it even has a mostly full tank of gas!” you shout as he approaches, struggling to be heard over the engine’s roar. He carefully gets on behind you, wrapping his arms around your waist to hold on.
“Indeed you did! You do know how to drive this, right?” he yells in your ear. You twist the throttle in response, making the machine somehow make even more noise.
“Now hold on!” you shout and kick with your left foot while squeezing the lever on the left handlebar simultaneously, shifting into gear as you barely twist the right handlebar, and he grips your waist even more tightly as the bike smoothly rolls forward out of the parking lot. Once on the main road, you twist the accelerator again and kick, shifting into second gear as you build a little more speed. V’s hands on your waist grip you tightly but not painfully, and you take a moment to revel in his hands on your body, wondering what it would feel like for him to touch you in other areas. You can barely hear V over the bike’s engine as he yells at top volume.
“I’ve never been on one of these before!”
You smirk, enjoying the fact that you finally found something you can do that he can’t that directly contributes to his mission.
“Just don’t let go of my waist and lean with me during turns! Don’t worry, I’ve got this!” you shout back to him as you shift into third, zooming past areas that would have taken all day to walk through. You have to backtrack frequently as the roads are blocked by vehicles, debris, and the strange elevation changes caused by the tree. Your mind drifts as you drive, remembering the day your ex taught you to ride. A long and exhausting day, but even more exhausting was the man himself.
I’m glad I got away from him.
The wind rushes by you as you cruise through the city, time passing in a blur. You drive until dusk and finally slow in a residential area. Houses spread out around you, white picket fences and perfectly landscaped gardens like icing on a cake. You park in a cul-de-sac and V slowly lets go of your waist, giving you a slight pang at the loss of sensation. You stretch your arms to the sides, then take off the stifling helmet and dismount, V doing the same.
“We covered so much ground today. We might actually be able to meet Nero and Nico tomorrow,” he says happily. You don’t think you’ve ever seen him this pleased; he almost seems to bounce as he strides to the nearest house.
“I hope they’re doing alright
” you respond, quickly catching up to him by the door. The house isn’t huge, a single story. You try the door and find it locked.
“Allow me,” V says dramatically and you back away instinctively. He gestures with one arm, summoning Shadow. She materializes in a blur, already barreling toward the door to the house. She crashes against it, ripping the door right off its hinges and flinging it ten feet into the room beyond. V gives her a rewarding pat as the pair of you head inside. She purrs loudly as you scratch under her chin as you pass, then vanishes in a cloud of black shards.
You try not to look at the photos lining the entryway of a happy family, but you find yourself hoping they escaped the carnage. The home is freezing cold, colder than outside. Someone must have left the AC on. You and V explore the house cautiously, wary of any demonic activity. Your eyes skim the living area, looking homey with a lumpy looking brown couch and oak coffee table set before the television. You turn left and find a kitchen, dirty dinner dishes still stacked in the sink. The linoleum floor clacks beneath your feet as you check the cupboards, finding pasta and a bottle of sauce to your immense pleasure.
“Help me look for a pot to cook pasta in, and a saucepan too,” you instruct him and he starts opening cupboards systematically across from you.
You try the stove top, fairly certain it won’t be functional but pleasantly surprised when a gas flame shoots out. V brings you a large pot and a laughably small saucepan. The water works when you turn the faucet and you lock eyes with V for a moment in utter joy.
“V
we might get to shower!” you tell him excitedly and he smirks at your enthusiasm.
You cook the pasta and heat the sauce, making a simple but satisfying meal for the two of you. You eat in near silence, too busy enjoying the food to talk. For a time the only sound is the clatter of silverware on plates, which V had brought you as well. You look over at him and see him slurp up some pasta that had been dangling from his full lips. You chuckle at the sight and he glances at you, raising an eyebrow quizzically.
“You have a little sauce on your chin,” you tell him, and he wipes his chin with the back of his wrist, missing the sauce entirely. You laugh again and reach out a hand to help him.
“Here, let me,” you say, and he holds perfectly still as your fingers brush against his chin, his stubble scraping your fingertips and sending a jolt through you. Your hand trembles a bit, partially from fatigue and partially due to the sensation of touching him so intimately. He takes the opportunity to take your fingers in his mouth and you feel his warm tongue licking away the sauce you had removed from his chin, his mouth sucking gently.
 That feels
 oh my

His tongue caresses your fingers once more, the sauce long gone, and you barely suppress a moan as heat pools low in your stomach. He lets your fingers go and looks you right in the eyes.
“Delicious
” he whispers in a downright dangerously seductive tone and another surge of arousal rises within you, making your head feel light and your heart beat excitedly.
You swallow nervously at the sparkle in his eyes, the smirk on his tempting lips proving that he knows exactly the effect he’s having on you. You blush, suddenly overly aware of your unkempt hair and unwashed body.
“I
I’m going to go try the shower
” you stammer out and somehow manage to step away from him.
“I’ll be picturing you in there until I get my turn. Take your time,” he growls, eyes carefully watching your stride. Your body betrays you as you pause at his words, a heady gush of warm energy shooting from your toes to the top of your head, but you keep walking, determined to scrub away the filth of the last
however long it had been since your last actual shower.
You find the shower easily enough, barely noticing the blue walls and seafoam green towels on the rack. You fiddle with the knobs and are rewarded with a chilled spray of water. You wait, hoping for hot water, and almost cry in happiness when the temperature shifts. You strip, indulging yourself slightly and imagining V’s hands removing your clothes, and step into the hot spray.
You ruminate on the last few days, remembering all the interruptions in moments of almost-kissing, and you growl in frustration.
Damn demons. Damn Griffon. Damn V’s dumb ego and rush to deal with Urizen. All I want is five minutes, five minutes to fucking kiss the guy

You imagine what it might feel like to have his lips against yours, that adorable smirk opening to let you taste him. The flirting, the banter, the almosts have been driving you mad with desire.  You remember the feeling of leaning on his shoulder, sharing trail mix. His arm wrapping around your waist after you hugged him. The look of hunger in his emerald eyes each time you were within inches of each other.
You need release like a blanket on a snow day, and your hand drifts to your stomach, sliding lower to open yourself up. The thoughts keep coming, ever faster. The press of his lips on your wrist, his hand in yours. The timbre of his voice as he’d confessed his interest in you. Your fingers in his mouth, oh my
His hands in your air, washing it.
Your fingers move faster and faster against your sensitive bundle of nerves, quiet gasps escaping your lips as you rock your hips against your hand. Blood thunders in your ears as you put pressure on that one little spot, rubbing hard and fast now. You think of the feel of his hair through your fingertips, the silky softness of it, and you wonder how he’d react if you pulled it and you come undone as you visualize the look on his face, a single long moan escaping you as your release pulses through your body in a tidal wave of pleasure.
____________________________________
V
V hears the water turn on and smiles, extremely gratified by your reaction to his playful teasing over dinner. He only pictures you in the shower for a moment before respectfully redirecting his thoughts. He stands, gathering the dishes together and bringing them to the sink.
There’s no point actually washing them, considering the circumstances, but at the least I can clear the area so Y/N can cook if she wants to in the morning.
He reflects on the change within him since you slapped him and yelled at him. Seeing the rage on your face and remembering your obvious worry over the days prior to it had shaken something within him, something bold and hungry, that tiny voice in the back of his mind screaming as it finally broke the thick walls he’d built to contain it and took control. He didn’t want to ignore how he felt about you anymore; in fact, he couldn’t. If he’d ever had any chance of not caring for you, it was long passed.
His entire existence was centered around one purpose – to defeat Urizen, and goddamnit he wanted more than that! And he didn’t want to die most of all. Perhaps it was selfish of him, to picture a fantasy of being happy with you, but tonight he doesn’t care.
To pass the time, he explores the house more fully, indulging his curiosity. It seems a family of two women and a young child lived here, the pictures on the walls featuring them smiling and playing together. He finds the child’s room but doesn’t enter; it felt strange to even consider snooping on a child. Instead he wanders toward where the sounds of you showering are emanating from, assuming it leads to the master bedroom. His cane clicks against the wood flooring, sheath left in the main area of the home.
He mentally congratulates himself when he proves himself correct. The bed looks quite large, easily enough room for you both, and he smiles gently at the idea of sleeping next to you again. Maybe this time he’ll even have the nerve to touch you?
He hears a door open, and glances back to the bathroom to see you standing in the hallway wearing nothing but a towel. You walk toward him with lidded eyes and he swallows, mouth suddenly dry at the sight of your still-wet skin and damp hair.
“All yours, I left the water on for you too. Maybe next time we can share?” you say coquettishly as you pass him, and the image of your naked forms pressed together beneath the warm spray makes him harden slightly and he has to suppress a moan. He turns to watch you walk to the closet, your hips swaying more than normal and catches a whiff of the vanilla soap you used.
 Tease
two can play at that game.
“I doubt we’d get very clean
 in fact, I guarantee it
” he says with a smirk as he walks away, leaving you to your thoughts. He reaches the bathroom and goes to close the door, then smirks and leaves it open a few inches. He starts removing his clothes, wondering if there was time to wash them as well. The leather of his coat stood up fairly well to demon blood and ichor, but his pants were a different story once again. Sighing, he reaches out to test the water.
It is a pleasing temperature, hot enough to make him feel comfortable. He steps into the spray eagerly, letting out a loud groan of pleasure as the water hits his exhausted body. He braces his unhurt arm against the wall, leaning into the water and letting it soak his hair and bandage. He tilts his face up into the spray, letting the water cleanse away all the time spent fighting and riding behind you.
Eventually, he looks at the available soaps and shampoos. Most are far too strongly scented for his liking, but one is a subtle lavender scent and he uses that on his hair. He massages the shampoo into his scalp and remembers the way you caressed his hair a few short days ago. He smiles, turning around to rinse away the suds.
He takes his time washing his body; to slip and fall here would be terribly embarrassing. As he reaches his groin, his thoughts return to the feel of your touch, the taste of your fingers mixed with pasta sauce, the sound of your laugh. He remembers the very first day you met, when you slid into him in the back of Nico’s van and absentmindedly strokes himself.
 I shouldn’t be doing this

Yet his hand keeps moving, and the thoughts keep coming to mind. The glassy eyed look you got when he teased you. The way your arms felt around him when you bandaged him. The power of your body leaning during motorcycle turns. The feeling of kissing the soft skin of your wrist. All the moments that have been building between you run through his mind as his hand quickens, breath coming in pants now.
I really shouldn’t be doing this

His mind transitions from memory to things he hopes are yet to come and he pictures you lying beneath him, eyes glassy as he enters you for the first time. Imagines the taste of your mouth on his. Imagines his hands on your skin, touching you everywhere. Imagines the sounds you might make when you come undone, just for him.
At that, he explodes. He lets out a long, shuddering breath, trying to be as quiet as possible, but a tiny moan slips past his parted lips. He stands there, slowly pumping through his pleasure as his mind goes blank, his imagination finally satiated.
He finishes cleaning himself and shuts off the water, carefully stepping out of the shower to get a towel. His emerald gaze checks the door, seeing it still as he’d left it, untouched. He towels his hair and stares into the mirror as he wraps it around his waist.
Get a hold of yourself. Focus.
The recently released voice within him voices the thought he’s been avoiding since the moment of his creation; I don’t want to. I want to live.
He turns away from his reflection with a sigh and steps out into the bedroom to find you in a pair of pajama bottoms and a tight t-shirt, lying in bed with the covers turned already for him and another set of pajamas laid out. He smiles, pleased to see the invitation. He watches your face as he stands before you, towel slung purposefully low on his hips and water still dripping down his patterned chest. You part your lips and he quirks an eyebrow at you playfully as he steps forward to take the pajamas, turning only after you look away blushing.
He returns to the bathroom to change, still thinking about the way your blush makes you glow. He dresses quickly, exhaustion hitting him even as thoughts of you continue racing through his mind. He comes back to the bedroom, having not bothered with the shirt you’d left for him, and he relishes the way your glinting eyes roam his body as he approaches the bed. He yawns, and you smile as he joins you in bed.
You face each other silently for a moment, both enjoying the peace. You reach out to touch his hair, and his eyes drift closed. His face relaxes as you touch him and he leans into your hand. You stop and turn over, grabbing the hairbrush you’d found.
“Sit up, V. I’m going to brush your hair,” you tell him. He smirks but rises obediently, eyes still closed. You begin at the ends, working your way through the tangled mass of wet strands as gently as you can.
“Thank you,” he sighs contentedly. You brush his hair gently, the strokes soothing and full of tenderness he has not known since he was a child. You brush until all the tangles are gone, then gently press his shoulder to make him lie back down. You put the brush back and turn to face him again. Your hand reaches out to stroke his hair again and he chuckles.
“You really like my hair, eh?”
You blush but murmur a yes.
“What else do you like?” he asks softly, playfully.
Your hand moves from his hair to his neck to trace one of the dark lines of his tattoos.  You keep going, hand gliding down his chest. You scoot closer to him, until you’re only inches apart and he wraps an arm around you. He opens his eyes, meeting yours immediately. You gasp softly at the look of affection in his emerald orbs and he pulls you even closer to him. You can smell the lavender soap he used, already mixing with his natural scent. The combination is easily the best thing you’ve ever smelled.
You and V move in unison, closing the distance between you at long last, uninterrupted as you finally, blessedly feel his lips on yours. Your lips meet gently, cautiously. His mouth is so soft against yours you almost think you’ve imagined it. Then you hear him inhale deeply and press his lips more firmly against yours, moving against you deliciously. You moan softly and he pulls back.
“So that’s what heaven tastes like
” he whispers softly, and you stroke his cheek affectionately. He turns his head to kiss your palm, then settles against the pillows.
“Goodnight, my poet
” you whisper back.
“Goodnight, my little fox
” he murmurs, and you both drift into a deep, dreamless sleep, still holding each other close.

intro to computer generated music, machine intelligence, & neural networks
i have to start making videos for school (online pair programming) so i guess i’m drafting a script for a video describing my music work (for video practice), since i’ve been feeling like i’m underselling my work by keeping the explanations (too) simple, so here’s a quick summary of my last 7 years.
i started working with computer generated music in about 2012, and i was using tim thompson’s gif jam, which samples the color of pixels in a gif surrounding a point you select, and transforms the changes in color to changes in pitch in a midi file. this was essentially random output, and can’t really be considered “machine intelligence” or a “neural network,” but it is computer generated. (my EPs (∩-_-)⊃━☆.*â€‹ïœ„ïœĄïŸŸ and pilot wave were made with gif jam.)
the process with gif jam involved a lot of “hitting the random button” and listening to the output over and over until i found something i wanted to explore, then usually a lot of cutting and pasting to bring out the melody (things sound more melodic if you just break them out into a 4-bar repeating structure, instead of one long rambling random melodic line that never repeats), and production tricks (if it’s too discordant, put it in a very resonant voice, so some of the dissonance gets canceled out via additive synthesis -- or, some tracks were even put in a monophonic voice, which leaves it up to the audio workstation to decide which one note to sound when multiple notes are played in the midi data, although i suspect most workstations consistently pick the highest or lowest note).
next i worked with maciej biedrzycki’s cgmusic on a project i wish i hadn’t called spirit cooking. cgmusic is described as “artificial intelligence” but is still not a “neural network” (it’s an expert system, which is a decision structure typically made out of if/then constructs, although i haven’t seen the source code so i don’t really know, and i wouldn’t have been able to understand it at the time i was making the album anyway).
it’s an ambitious project with remarkably unique output. biedryzcki’s stated goal was to create a program that wasn’t limited by mimicking a particular style, so there are different buttons for “classical” or “jazz” or “disco,” variously effective depending on how lucky you are. again the process involved a lot of “hitting the random button” and “production tricks,” but most midi files outputted by cgmusic come rather fully formed, with a verse/chorus structure and everything, so there wasn’t nearly as much cutting and pasting involved. the melodies came sensibly arranged in repeating themes, and i was able to basically focus on bringing the program’s vision to light, trying to play joe meek and find the ideal voicing for the score as written (again, variously effective depending on luck). this is where common themes started to crop up for me, but i’ll have to come back to that.
for my next project (cloud computing the horse), i tried an iterative process passing things i had written and things written by programs back and forth through a yamaha tenori-on and a laptop i destroyed in the process. i guess you could say i never computed the horse. most recently i’ve worked with codeparade’s neuralcomposer on an album called loops, released last week. neuralcomposer is, finally, a genuine neural network, trained on a dataset of videogame music.
the process with neuralcomposer was a little more robust, as i was actually able to hit the random button, save the output, adjust sliders, and then save a variation on the first output’s theme. this comes through in a few of the songs, but mostly i just tried to do as many different things as i could in producing each one, and i’m really proud of the diverse but thematically cohesive results i was able to get. there was still a good deal of manual editing to be done, as it outputs notes that are all the same very short length. it outputs everything as one file (as opposed to cgmusic’s 6) so sometimes i made aesthetic choices to draw out a set of notes and place them in a different track, or move something to a different octave to either expand things out or make them denser, etc. i’ve also started trying to vary the midi velocity, since when i’m actually playing an instrument, dynamic variation is a primary focus, so machine generated music sometimes needs added dynamic variation to sound more real. it seems like it would be really easy to add this into any given midi generator, since the midi files already have velocity, and the rules for dynamics are fairly straightforward.
circling back to common themes, several years ago, at this point, i guess, there was a lot of discussion of disruptive displacement in labor by machines. there were concerns that workers would be seen as disposable in favor of machines that could do exactly the same thing but better and more efficiently, people were worrying about whether lawyers or baristas would go first, etc etc. i’m willing to admit my work is on the lunatic fringe but this hasn’t, at all, been my experience of working with computer generated music. it’s been weirdly personal and impersonal, downloading a computer program by someone i’ve never talked to, and forming a close bond while collaborating with the program over a period of weeks. it’s like i’m producing a record for someone who pretty much knows exactly what they want, and all i have to do is figure out how to best clarify what they’re trying to say. we complement each other’s strengths and weaknesses, the computer steps in to absolve me of writer’s block, i step in to move the file across multiple programs and produce a finished track out of raw midi data.
the other common theme being luck -- sometimes the random button gives me a killer track, sometimes it doesn’t. sometimes i take what i thought could be a killer track, and ruin it by making the wrong aesthetic choices. not every raw file gets fully produced, and not every finished track makes it onto the album. this is, more than anything, exactly like writing music that isn’t computer generated, except it moves faster and keeps me on my toes. a computer program written by a person isn’t any better than a person at reliably writing hits, it just has a finite but massive amount of possible songs it can ever write, and they’re all accessible immediately at once instead of painstakingly over the course of a lifetime (assuming you could hit the random button, or manually move each slider, fast enough to actually explore the whole available configuration-space).
this leads me to a couple of dark inferences along the way, which are 1) that i too have a finite but massive configuration-space of songs i could possibly ever write, 2) that there could very easily be songs vastly better than any of the ones i find, songs that remain forever hidden in the unexplored depths of any given program or person’s configuration-space, and 3) i’m decreasing my chances of finding my own best songs by spending so much time exploring machine configuration spaces, but i digress.
the next step i’d like to take in the field is to identify a better way to explore this space than a random button or manual sliders. how do you intentionally and deliberately navigate all possible output from a neural network, to hone in on what you’re really looking for? tune in next year, after i’ve finished school, maybe. anyway, in summary, yes, i built an entire career around computer generated music before i had written a single line of code. catch my music on some norwegian radio station or whatever i keep getting royalties for. (i make about as much as it costs to post on cdbaby.)

Quartararo wins, Rins second as Aleix Espargaro makes history at Silverstone
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The gap at the top increases, Rins gets back on form and Aprilia take a first MotoGPℱ podium as six factories finish in the top six for the first time since 1972 Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) unleashed some serious speed at Silverstone on Sunday, the Frenchman on fine form to fight his way through to the lead and then put the hammer down to win the Monster Energy British Grand Prix. Behind, Alex Rins (Team Suzuki Ecstar) stormed through for second place and a podium to bounce back from a tougher season so far, and in third place some history was made: Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing Team Gresini) held off Jack Miller (Ducati Lenovo Team) to take Aprilia's first ever podium in the MotoGPℱ era. Pol Espargaro (Repsol Honda Team) took the holeshot from pole, with Quartararo initially up into second. But Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) was on the move, past Aleix Espargaro into third and then attacking El Diablo. Drama struck just off that fight too as Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) and Jorge Martin (Pramac Racing) came together once with Martin up the inside, and then the eight-time World Champion tried to take it back. With Martin reacting to those ahead to have opened a small gap, the number 93 made it just ahead but then collected the rookie. He apologised and it was deemed a racing incident. That early race action was still led by Pol Espargaro, with Bagnaia in second and Aleix Espargaro shadowing. The Aprilia then went for the lead but headed wide, and not long after that Quartararo started to make his moves. By 16 to go the Yamaha had worked his way to the front, and from there the hammer went down. The battle behind raged on, with Pol and Aleix Espargaro ahead of Bagnaia and reigning Champion Joan Mir (Team Suzuki Ecstar). Jack Miller (Ducati Lenovo Team) was in the mix too, but the rider starting to make serious progress was Rins. By 13 to go, Rins was into third with Quartararo gone out front and Aleix Espargaro holding strong in second. Pol Espargaro was starting to fade slightly, but the big change was Bagnaia as the number 63 sunk to the back of the group, struggling to stay with them. Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing), meanwhile, was doing the opposite. The South African was on an absolute Sunday charge once again, and was past Mir and homing in on Pol Espargaro. Bagnaia had dropped well back and Alex Marquez (LCR Honda Castrol) had moved well forward, as a change up ahead then ultimately decided the podium. Aleix Espargaro headed wide, and Rins needed no second invitation as he moved into second. Quartararo was gone, and by the final lap the key battle was focused on Aprilia, on the verge of making history. Rins was just out of reach although still tantalisingly close, but Miller was on the march. The Australian struck to momentarily break a thousand Noale hearts, but Aleix Espargaro hit straight back and made it stick. A few apexes were all that remained between the number 41 and history, and he kept ahead for that mythical first podium. Quartararo made the masterclass look easy but far from it, Rins got back on the box after a tougher 2021 so far, and Aleix Espargaro ended a long, long wait for a podium - for man and machine. Not since 2014 has he been on the box, and Aprilia never have in the MotoGPℱ era. Miller was denied but came home top Ducati, with Pol Espargaro taking fifth and a great result from pole. And sixth went to Binder, the South African raising more eyebrows on race day and adding the final piece in a history-making race: Yamaha, Suzuki, Aprilia, Ducati, Honda and KTM in the top six makes it the first time since 1972 six factories have been in the top six. Iker Lecuona (Tech 3 KTM Factory Racing) also put in a Sunday stunner to take seventh, not so far from Binder either as the Spaniard leapfrogged compatriot Alex Marquez, who took eighth. In the latter stages Mir faded to ninth, and he was only just ahead of another charging KTM as Tech 3 KTM Factory Racing's Danilo Petrucci completed the top ten. Johann Zarco (Pramac Racing) was close behind too in P11, before a slightly bigger gap back to Enea Bastianini (Avintia Esponsorama), Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda Idemitsu) and then Bagnaia, who took P14 in the end. Luca Marini (Avintia VR46) picked up the final point. After a monster weekend for Quartararo that sees him now sit 65 points clear of Mir in the Championship, the Frenchman seems to be holding most of the cards in 2021. But next up it's Aragon and good hunting ground for his rivals. Can they fight back next time out? We'll find out in two weeks!
