Grampa's Antique Fan (2015 vs 2024 Edit)
As a young man, after coming home from the Second World War, my grampa got a job as an electrician for Emerson Electric. He didn't work on the actual electrical products. He just maintained the electrical systems that power the tools to make electrical components.
It was a "I heard you need electricity for your electricity" type deals.
The company was founded in 1890 in nearby Ferguson, Missouri by John Wesley Emerson. He was a Union commander in the Civil War and a lawyer and then a judge and then an author and then a historian... so he was clearly qualified to run one of the first electronics companies. (This is currently referred to as the "Law of Elon".)
Emerson (the company, not the dude) specialized in electric motors and was the first to stick their motors in a fan and sell them.
As you can see by the 4 protective fan guard loopies, these were very safe for kids to be around.
I mean, the biggest thing you could shove in there is a baby arm, which is the least important part of a baby. No baby heads were chopped off—which was the bar for consumer safety during that era.
Fans are rated by the volume of air they can push over a period of time and your average box fan can push about 1400 cubic feet per minute or "CFM". When this Emerson (the fan, not the dude) was produced they actually used "CCH" or cubic cubits per hour. Emerson (the dude) loved using odd standards of measurement much to the chagrin of his engineers.
Due to the small surface area, weak angle of attack, and heavy metal blades, this electronic beast could only push a baker's dozen cubic cubits per baker's hour—which was a confusing metric of time because people were very superstitious and they refused to put the 13 on the baker's clocks. They just left a mysterious blank void after the 12 and apparently several people had existential crises during the baker's hour. Some were institutionalized for a rare condition called Time Delirium.
Thankfully Emerson Electric was able to provide the electroshock therapy devices that cured several patients. This was achieved by erasing the memory of the traumatic time delirium events along with a few other unimportant details like what they did last Tuesday and their mother's name and one engineering degree that the guy wasn't even using.
My dad actually got the fan working and let me tell you... that bad boy could really work up a gentle breeze...
...if you stood behind it and blew.
And that fine American-made electric fan motor was just as quiet as a leaf blower on Saturday morning.
Over the last century, Emerson was bought and sold and bought and sold.
And bought and sold and bought and sold.
Was that 7?
Eh, close enough. We'll call it a baker's 7.
They changed their product line countless times over their 130+ years of existence. After fans they pivoted and made electric meat grinders. To this day, no one know what inspired that decision.
Currently, they make radar avionics and are majority-owned by the private equity firm, Blackstone. Which is a totally non-evil sounding name they chose for their company-eating empire. Please ignore that the CEO was one of Trump's policy strategists. This is a non-evil company with a non-evil name run by non-evil people, okay?
Despite Emerson Electric having to settle a baker's gross of lawsuits involving a few lightly scalp'd babies, they maintain a Fortune 500 status and are still headquartered in Ferguson.
They occupy one of the most boring ass buildings ever constructed.
Just rectangles all the way down.
That architect told every angle to get rect.
Of course, I forgot all of this cool history and sold this fan in the estate auction. I suppose it is a good thing I got a nice photograph to help assuage my current feelings of guilt. I mean, it is not baby scalping, time delirium guilt—but I would feel better if I knew my gramp-gramp's fan was in a good home with 0 babies.
#photography#re-edit#some of this stuff is actually true#I have yet to fall asleep and so I wrote this#can you tell I haven't slept?

I was a scientist and engineer for DuPont's and General Motors' Missouri-based industrial chemical development brand Kinetic Chemicals, Inc (officially dissolved, though really spiritually reformed with the founding of Chemours in 2015) when Teflon™ was being modified for use as a potential coating in pipes in certain government projects I can't name. Now, these pipes were conveying depleted uranium hexafluoride; uranium waste produces highly corrosive uranyl and hydrogen fluorides when exposed to moist air (those Tennessee summers at Oak Ridge got pretty damn moist), so those naughty little tubes needed something slick to help everything wash down alright. It was a miserable success -- I mean it only takes a single mistake in a diagnostic test before before you can't hold up a Geiger counter to the foreman without getting a headache. Miss that poor guy, strokes are awful. So are radiation burns. Anyway, turns out some of the refrigeration units next door to the employee lounge were leaking Freon™ we were producing (see McCaffrey v. Kinetic Chemicals, Inc for more). Being in the summery youth of our scientific careers we naively sealed those babies up with some experimental Teflon™ spray, and long story short that little bit of polytetrafluoroethylene made it into every water cooler and sink on campus, both above- and underground. Forgot where I was going with this, but moral of the story is kids these days can handle a little microplastic.

Drive Your Corvette to Work Day
Many Corvette owners own other cars as well, and often only drive their Corvettes on special occasions. Corvettes are regularly driven on beautiful days or are taken to car shows, but usually aren’t used as commuter cars for work. But, today is different—today is Drive Your Corvette to Work Day. Sponsored by Mid America Motorworks, a supplier of aftermarket Corvette parts and accessories, the day has taken place since 2001. The goal is to get as many Corvette owners as possible around the world to drive their car, in order to show how popular the car is. It takes place on the Friday closest to June 30, the day in 1953 when the first Corvette came off the General Motors assembly line.
Harley J. Earl was no stranger to designing cars. He redesigned the LaSalle in the late 1920s, designed the Buick Y-Job—which is seen as being the first concept car, and also designed the GM Le Sabre. He then began working on “Project Opel,” which would turn into the Corvette. In its design, he took inspiration from the Jaguar XK120. On January 17, 1953, the Corvette was introduced at GM’s traveling Motorama display, at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City.
Later that year, on June 30, the first Corvette for consumers came off the assembly line at the GM plant in Flint, Michigan. Tony Kleiber, a worker at the plant, drove the first car off the line. The Corvette had been named by Myron Scott, a photographer for Chevrolet. After looking in the dictionary for a word that started with a “C,” in order to give the make and model phrase an alliterative effect, he found “corvette,” the name for a small warship that was fast and easy to maneuver.
At a time when most cars were built out of steel, the Corvette was the first sports car with a body made completely of fiberglass. There were only 300 built the first year, all of which were white convertibles with red interiors and black canvas tops. They otherwise used standard Chevrolet parts, such as the “Blue Flame” six-cylinder engine, and the two-speed Powerglide automatic transmission. Still, they could go from the speed of 0-60 in 11 seconds and could reach a speed of 110 mph. They had no exterior door handles, and no windows as well, just plastic curtains. They had a sticker price of $3,513, which is $32,979 in 2018 dollars. All were equipped with a $91 heater and $145 AM radio, which was added to the sticker price. 1953 models are worth much more now: the third Corvette produced was sold for 1.06 million dollars in 2006.
As of 2018, there have been seven generations of Corvettes (C1-C7). V8 engines were an option beginning in 1955, and 9 out of 10 buyers selected the option that year; all Corvettes have since been equipped with V8s. By the 1960s, the Corvette was known as America’s favorite sports car. The second generation (C2) of the car was produced from 1963-1967 and was known as the Sting Ray. One of the most popular Corvettes of all time is the 1963 model, which is unique for having a split rear window.
Corvettes have been produced in Flint, Michigan, St. Louis, Missouri, and since 1981, in Bowling Green, Kentucky, where the National Corvette Museum also is also located. There were issues when making the 4th generation of the car, thus only one 1983 model exists, and production was continued with the 1984 models. The lone 1983 model can be seen at the Corvette Museum. Years after the first Corvette rolled off the assembly line, they still are towards the top of the pack for speed and acceleration. They have also been continually produced longer than any sports car or passenger car in the world.
Drive Your Corvette to Work Day is being observed today! It has been observed the closest Friday to June 30th since 2001.

RedLine Fever - International 1486 - NTPA Tractor Pull
Truck and tractor pulling, also known as power pulling, is a form of a motorsport competition in which antique or modified tractors pull a heavy drag or sled along an 11-meter-wide (35 ft), 100-meter-long (330 ft) track, with the winner being the tractor that pulls the drag the farthest. Tractor pulling is popular in certain areas of the United States, Mexico, Canada, Europe (especially in the United Kingdom, Greece, Switzerland, Sweden, Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Denmark and Germany), Australia, Brazil, South Africa, Vietnam, India and New Zealand. The sport is known as the world's most powerful motorsport, due to the multi-engined modified tractor pullers.
All tractors in their respective classes pull a set weight in the drag. When a tractor gets to the end of the 100 meter track, this is known as a "full pull". When more than one tractor completes the course, more weight is added to the drag, and those competitors that moved past 91 metres (300 ft) will compete in a pull-off; the winner is the one who can pull the drag the farthest. The drag is known as a weight transfer drag. This means that, as it is pulled down the track, the weight is transferred (linked with gears to the drag’s wheels) from over the rear axles and towards the front of the drag. In front of the rear wheels, instead of front wheels, there is a "pan". This is essentially a metal plate, and as the weight moves toward it, the resistance between the pan and the ground builds. The farther the tractor pulls the drag, the more difficult it gets.
Tractor pulling originated from pre-Industrial Era horse pulling competitions in which farmers would compete with one another to see whose teams of draft horses could pull a heavy load over the longest distance. The first known competitions using motorized tractors were held in 1929 in Missouri and Kentucky. Tractor pulling became popular in rural areas across the Midwestern and Southern United States in the 1950s and 1960s. From there it gradually spread to Canada, Europe, and Australia and New Zealand.
Join us as we visit with the owner about his International 1486, which has already won 12 championships this year.

U.S. auto industry in turmoil, historic strike may cause huge losses
Yun Shang Hui Xin Limited
youtube
On September 15, U.S. time, 12,700 workers of the United Auto Workers (UAW) held historic strikes simultaneously at three factories in Michigan, Missouri and Ohio.
The reason for the strike is that the labor contracts between about 150,000 American auto workers and the three automakers General Motors, Ford and Stellantis Group have expired, and the labor and management parties have not reached an agreement. This is the first time in more than 80 years since the founding of the United Auto Workers that auto workers have staged a strike against the three automakers mentioned above.
Public information shows that the UAW is one of the largest workers' associations in the United States. There are as many as 146,000 UAW union members in General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis Group, accounting for approximately 56% of all workers in the U.S. auto manufacturing industry.
The strikes were initiated at the General Motors Assembly Plant in Wentzville, Missouri, which produces Chevrolet Colorados, GMC Canyons and other models; and at the Stellantis Assembly Plant in Toledo, Ohio, which produces Jeep Wrangler models; and the Ford Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan, which produces the Ford Ranger and Bronco models.
Sean Fein, president of the United Auto Workers Union, said that although a larger "general strike" has not yet been held, if the labor and management cannot reach a new contract, then "any option is possible."
The general strike by the three major automobile manufacturers will have an impact on the automobile market and supply chain. The most direct impact is that the factories of these three car companies have stopped production, extending the delivery time of automobile products and reducing inventory, which will cause damage to automobile sales revenue. Oxford Economics predicts that if the nearly 150,000 unionized workers at the three companies end up going on strike, the move could halt about one-third of U.S. vehicle production, put pressure on the labor market and push up new car prices.
The automobile industry chain is long, and the strike will have a chain reaction on the supply chain. The U.S. automotive industry's supply chain is complex and extensive, including hundreds of suppliers and manufacturers. The strike will disrupt the supply chain and cause significant disruption to parts supply and vehicle production. Jeff Schuster, head of global automotive business at consulting firm GlobalData, said that a strike at one engine or transmission plant of each car company would be enough to shut down nearly three-quarters of U.S. assembly plants.
The historic strike by the United Auto Workers union not only threatens the automobile industry, but also has a serious impact on the overall stability of the U.S. economy.
The automobile manufacturing industry occupies a pivotal position in the U.S. economy and is one of the country's largest manufacturing sectors. According to a study by Michigan-based consulting firm Anderson Economic Group, a 10-day strike by the Big Three could result in more than $5 billion in economic losses. The automobile industry (including foreign-funded enterprises doing business in the United States) accounts for about 3% of U.S. GDP, and the strike will also affect the U.S. economic performance for some time to come. The Toledo plant of Jeep Motor Company, a subsidiary of the Stellantis Group, alone may suffer losses of up to US$380 million due to a week of closure. In 2019, the UAW went on strike against General Motors for six weeks, involving 48,000 workers in more than 50 factories. General Motors suffered losses of up to $3.6 billion, and Michigan experienced a single-quarter economic recession.
In the new negotiation agreement, the UAW hopes that the three auto companies will provide a 40% salary increase for auto workers; it also requires that all workers be provided with welfare pensions, a 32-hour work week and additional cost-of-living benefits, and the elimination of temporary workers and the tiered wage system, etc. . Top assembly workers, for example, will see their wages rise from the current $32 an hour to $47 an hour. Since it will significantly increase labor costs, the three car companies believe that the union's demands are unrealistic.
Currently, the automobile industry is in the process of electrification transformation. Major automobile companies have increased investment in the field of electrification. The increase in labor costs will intensify the pressure on automobile manufacturers. GM President Mark Reuss said the union's wage and benefit proposals would put GM up to $100 billion in cost pressures. This cost estimate is more than twice the current total value of GM, and GM cannot afford this burden.
Ford also said in a statement that the UAW's latest proposal would double its labor costs, and the company would face the dilemma of being unable to compete effectively with non-union opponents, especially Tesla. "If the plan proposed by the UAW is followed, Ford's labor costs will be significantly higher than those of Tesla, Toyota and other foreign-owned automakers in the United States. These automakers use non-union represented labor."
According to the plan proposed by the union, combined with wages and benefits, the labor cost of the three major automakers is approximately $64 per hour. According to previous foreign media reports, the all-inclusive labor cost at non-union assembly plants of Toyota Motor and other international automakers is US$55 per hour. Tesla's labor costs are even lower, at $45 to $50 an hour.
YSHX
It is worth noting that Tesla CEO Musk has long been outspokenly opposed to labor unions. He believes that labor unions will drag down corporate efficiency. After the strike, Musk tweeted: "The wages I pay to workers are higher than what the UAW wants. The performance requirements are also higher. Over the years, our factory has had many technicians working on the production line. , became a millionaire by holding stock options in the company.”
To solve the problems caused by this historic strike, both labor and management need to restart contract negotiations and actively find common solutions. This requires compromise and flexibility on both sides to meet the reasonable demands of workers while ensuring the competitiveness of car companies.

Hyundai Motor and Kia Corp Respond to Class-Action Lawsuit Over Car Theft: Compensation and Repairs Required
By Taylor Trenta, Calvin University Class of 2025
August 9, 2023
Hyundai Motor and Kia Corp Respond to Class-Action Lawsuit Over Car Theft: Compensation and Repairs Required
In May of this year, Hyundai Motor and Kia Corp settled on a consumer class-action lawsuit following an infamous influx in car theft. This settlement is worth over $200 million. [1] They claimed that compensation would go to vehicle owners “who incurred theft-related vehicle losses or damage in addition to reimbursement for insurance deductibles, increased insurance premiums, and other theft related losses.” [1] Even vehicles that cannot receive a technical upgrade were eligible for up to $300 in purchasing locks and other theft deterrents. [1]
In Kia’s official release, chief legal officer John Yoon stated: “Kia is very pleased that today’s announcement will allow customers who have been impacted by vehicle thefts to receive additional benefits... This agreement is the latest step in a series of important actions, in addition to providing a free security software upgrade and distributing over 65,000 steering wheel locks, that Kia has taken to help customers whose vehicles have been targeted by criminals using methods of theft popularized on social media. Kia remains committed to assisting our customers and upholding vehicle security.” [2]
In the case, major cities sued the company for the thefts and the danger the stolen vehicles pose, with some of the major victims hailing from St. Louis, Missouri, Cleveland, Ohio, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and San Diego, California. [1] In the class action lawsuit, Keller Rohrback L.L.P. represented many of these cities, basing the case on the flaws in the stolen vehicles; in their case overview, they state: “The vehicles are easy to steal because of Defendants’ Hyundai Motor America’s (“Hyundai”) and Kia America, Inc.’s (“Kia”) deviation from industry norms and failure to install engine immobilizers in the majority of their vehicles manufactured for sale in the United States between 2011 and 2021.” [3] The summary states that these crimes and the danger to the public could have been prevented; “Defendants could have prevented this nuisance by including as standard engine immobilizers, parts that are inexpensive and significantly effective in reducing the rate of vehicle theft.” [3]
Tik Tok videos illustrating these crimes have been connected to at least fourteen car accidents and eight fatalities. [1] According to the official release, these types of cars have “historically low rates of theft.” [2] However, the “Kia Challenge” took advantage of the faulty security features, steering columns, and ability to access the ignition; the challenge then encouraged others to imitate the crime, despite Hyundai and Kia attempting to limit this “illicit content.” [2] With the lawsuit filed by Milwaukee in March, a group of attorneys led by Josh Kaul put pressure on the car companies to quickly combat the popular car thefts. In response, Hyundai Motor and Kia Corp were able to equip “turn-to-start" ignition vehicles with an “ignition kill” feature that overrides the methods used in social media trends. [4] The weakness in the design was also related to the easily accessible USB interface, meaning the thief only needed to take a few steps to insert a USB cable and start the car. According to the lawsuit, this can take “less than a minute.” [5] Furthermore, some of these car windows were allegedly not connected to the alarm system, allowing them to be broken without drawing attention to the crime. [5]
The auto manufacturer is on record saying they would extend an offer to upgrade 8.3 million vehicles with superior anti-theft measures following the influx of crime. [1] With the 2011-2012 model, their statement claims to have complied with requirements; “While Hyundai and Kia believe these vehicles are fully compliant with federal anti-theft requirements, Hyundai and Kia have taken action to support the security of customers, and this agreement represents the latest step.” [2] These software upgrades and financial compensation are expected to limit future crimes as much as possible.
Following the decision in May, attorney Elizabeth A. Fegan of Fegan Scott said: “Hyundai and Kia failed to sell cars equipped with fundamental anti-theft features, and that was not a victimless act...We are pleased with the settlement reached and its immediate ability to hinder thieves, as well as compensate victims of thefts that have already occurred.” [6] The proposed settlement was set to be reviewed and implemented by July of this year. [6]
In the future, Jason Erb, the chief legal officer, said: “Customer security remains a top priority, and we’re committed to continuing software upgrade installations and steering wheel lock distribution to help prevent thefts and offering insurance options through AAA for those who have had difficulty securing and sustaining coverage.” [4] However, stolen Kia and Hyundia vehicles remain a problem across the country. In Flagler County, the sheriff recommends caution and the implementation of the software update as soon as possible. Sheriff Rick Staly said: “I urge Hyundai and Kia owners to contact their local auto dealer or call the toll-free numbers to obtain the software update to protect your vehicles from thieves... We have had these cars stolen locally and have recovered stolen Kias and Hyundais from other jurisdictions in Flagler County. We also encourage you to purchase a steering wheel lock bar and use it every time you leave your car. And remember, never leave your keys in your car.” [7] While car theft remains an issue, Kia and Hyundai look to offer solutions to the flaws in these cars; however, caution is still necessary. As of August, Hyundai Group faces another lawsuit over a fire hazard in some vehicles.

This is the Budweiser plant before it was converted to the Michelob plant last year and they took the whole thing over and started making more of it and people are drinking the culture and so forth is a big boost to drinking Michelob and then slowed down and it hasn't picked up yet I found out it was Trump's just now and sales are way down and it's going to force them out and we'll have to take it over and he's going to quit he says so we're going in there and we're checking all the bottles now and they're going to kicked out all over the world so that's happening earlier and now they have you on the line and it's going to happen faster. This is the plant in Missouri and it is now north of the wall Mississippi is north of the wall no but Missouri is north of Mississippi not really that's right it's in your territory and we have to take it over but it is just south of the wall about 100 miles and the max are there too and they can't believe it they finally got them out of there. There's a few more companies like this that were Ken's victory motorcycles and she'll have to think about competing with the American motorcycle company they've all sort of founded it and he's got two I guess and I don't know what the motif would be those things are huge honking motorcycles and they're supposed to be big and they got big motors so she says when in Rome would be good for big ladies she'll make regular size ones too. And he wants to get him on one cuz he's going to get bigger we need a big one and Ken is getting enthused so we're going after that company and it's kind of defunct and the factories are just sitting there and we'll check out where that is this is going on now when we're taking it over and we're going to clean everything out blast out all the lines replace all the gaskets and seals cuz they're most likely bad and we put in a synthetic we don't use any old rubber and really if it sits in the line and it starts to eat it away we don't want that we have it all ready to go and now we're doing it now one line at a time and that's a line of brewing and really we're halfway through and we'll have it by the end of the day I'm going to start making the new brew and we're going to use the new bottles after these used up it's not that many bottles here the bottling plant is shut down completely and they're getting their bottles from somewhere else now they're about to shut it down fully and that's not kind they'll say it about Ken and it's in this movie Man on fire. So we're doing it now and we're going on to another company of his and Coleman was his and we keep offering stock and he says no it's too hot and it really is but he might accept it in a moment
They're talking about the fire truck engines and it's not us no it is us and that would be Preston and it's a big company and it's out east and it's still a working company and John remillard has a bunch of it so we're going on the warpath to take it
Big Joe had a couple companies and they're kind of sunk and they're kind of defunct and their tech companies one is Hayes and the other is Sim people thought it was him making all these products but really need both and when is the modem and people still use modems even external ones and the other is a card for your phone and it's disc storage writable CDs and removable CDs and portable hard disks and we're going to go after that and see if Joe wants to get involved and Preston and the fire engine company is worth it because those engines are big and we can use the stronger steel and they're pretty much a decent design couple change it to be perfect he last and says you're right he said it's a pretty good and he's the engineer that's why and we need fire engines and engines that are in these are broken you're going to look to do this today with the fire engine company actually all of it but the fire engine is just priority our priority
Lobo
I do appreciate your help and he's saying it too of course and this is great he says it's fast and it's the aggression we need and it's the area we need fire engines and other I didn't switch a good so moving on to the next one but we're going to take this all today and start production and really he dropped it yesterday or the day before completely
Proxima Midnight

i don't think i've ever posted about my car (the fuckmobile 9000) here, but it's the car of all time, so you get to be subjected to my experiences with vehicles.
so, for context: i own a car from 1996 (because I don't make any money). however- and this is important- i do not own a beater car. i own a car that was, at the time, a fairly high-end vehicle.
the car i have, specifically, is a top of the line '96 nissan maxima. bought early in the january of that year. the color as stated in the owner's manual is "gold" but the department of motor vehicles has ruled it as "beige". the paint on the roof is peeling off; the cover for a small piece of one of the headlights has gone missing somewhere. the hubcaps are beginning to rust, and the paint on the windshield wiper holders has been rubbed clean away, making them clean steel that reflects the sun directly into my eyes whenever i'm driving home at sunset.
the first indication one might gain that this car was worth far more than three thousand bucks back in the day is when, before starting it up, one opens the gas tank. on the internal cover, there is a warning saying to only use premium fuel (93 octane or better) for necessary engine performance.
(it gets 87 octane because that is what i can afford and it likes it. however, as protest, the gas tank refuses to indicate the proper fuel level until i hit half empty. such is life.)
despite the car insurance being 24 dollars a month, once you actually start the vehicle it roars to life as if it's fresh off the lot. completely overkill for a consumer vehicle, it's outfitted with a v6 engine that makes the thing shake so much that it needs a special doohickey called a harmonic balancer on the crankshaft to make it stop doing that.
i discovered, incidentally, that it requires a harmonic balancer when the rubber on the original manufacturer one wore out and the car threw 6 belts before the mechanics figured out what the hell the problem was. essentially all the rubber and plastic on the vehicle has worn out from age. this is, in fact, the only engine problem i have ever had.
one interesting piece of plastic in many vehicles is a little bolt-shaped thing that indicates when the brake light should turn off; a brake light is actually a dead man's switch, in that the switch is always on when it is not receiving electronic signal, as opposed to always off. anyway, the brake light's plastic bit broke in half last summer and my car battery died repeatedly until i figured out i needed a replacement for it, which cost $3 plus $18 shipping from missouri. the dashboard odometer mechanism is also plastic-based, so it is a 1/3 chance that it increments on any trip (but the internal odometer works; strangely, despite this discrepancy, there's only a 3,000 mile mileage difference between them.)
the radio/media system fuse burnt out in 2019; interestingly, unlike in more recent cars, this is not connected to the clock, so I can still tell the time. i do miss my cassette player, though, even if i mortifyingly found out recently that half of my old cassettes are from joe biden's favorite band.
either way, you're not here to hear about my car trouble (summing in total to just under half of the vehicle's current retail price). you're here to hear about its performance. well, i'm happy to tell you that even with 87 octane, it gladly goes from zero to sixty in about 6.7 seconds, nearly the same timespan as the 2022 maxima (5.7). how do i know this? i live in a town where the lovely non-permanent residents significantly enjoy showing off the power of their cars' motors. it's similarly excellent at maintaining high speeds, keeping 80 even running up steep grades in the appalachian mountains.
now, as for miles per gallon, it's not great. it's a car from 1996, and i'm feeding it low-octane fuel so it's doing even worse than it should be, but it can still run from the WV/SWVA border to DC on 2/3 of a tank. (it takes 3/4 to get back, because of the uphill/downhill differences, but it's still easily manageable on one tank.)
now you're definitely saying "whoa, hold on man, think about the emissions on that thing!"
luckily, my car's registered back in fucking lockheed martinville, so it's gotta go through emissions checks every two years. it's passed every single one with flying colors- by better margins than my next door neighbor's brand new audi. fuck that guy for doing donuts outside at three in the morning, by the way. of course, CO2 is an issue, but electric cars cost forty grand and as previously mentioned i live in appalachia. so this guy's staying around until it turns 30 or i leave the united states, whichever comes first.
in conclusion: the fuckmobile 9000 will never die. also don't tailgate me for your own safety, this thing's got a steel body and you've got crumple zones. if you rear end me at a traffic light, you're the one who's getting totaled, not me.
(as for me you can rest assured i'm not rear-ending you, i don't want a door through the head)
anyway if you have no money and want an alternative vehicle before getting enough to go electric, consider an ancient and immortal creature from the 1990s. and maybe try downloading some mp3s on your phone to listen to on trips; you never know when your radio will spontaneously fail, after all.
#i am not by nature a car person#but my car is very stupid and very functional and i want to show her i appreciate her#here you go fuckmobile 9000#'lockheed martinville' for those not in the know is northern virginia

In the Autumn of 1910, an unusual machine called the Deluxe appeared in the ‘Cycle and Automobile Trade Journal.’ From Cleveland, Ohio, the machine was conceived as something more substantial than a motorcycle – in fact, it was advertised as a two-wheeled car. The design and construction was unconventional even for the wild early days of motorcycling, with hub-center steering and a steering wheel for the driver, and a pair of outrigger wheels that were retracted with a hand lever. The engine was a large flat-twin resting beneath the driver’s padded bucket chair, and the whole machine was enclosed in typically automotive pressed-steel bodywork.
A few months later, the machine reappeared as the Militaire at the Toronto Motorcycle Show, and a few problems were evident with the design. The heavy water-cooled flat-twin engine was placed inline with the frame, with the rear cylinder beside the rear wheel, throwing the center of gravity radically off to the right, and making the outrigger wheels necessary at low speeds. A curtain was drawn on the Militaire for a year, when a completely redesigned machine from the Militaire Auto Company was revealed in 1912.The new Militaire retained the hub-center steering of the original, but now featured a single-cylinder 29 cu-in. (480cc) F-head motor below the steering column (and steering wheel), with a flat space behind the motor for the rider’s feet. The engine was turned with its crankshaft 90 degrees to the chassis, and connected by shaft and a friction clutch to the rear of the machine, where the driveline turned again through 90 degrees to drive the rear wheel by chain. That rear wheel was sprung on an elaborate swingarm and leaf-spring arrangement, which also carried the outrigger wheels. The driver sat in a comfortable bucket seat, while the engine and entire driveline was totally shrouded in sheetmetal, and cooled by a large fan enclosed beneath the driver’s seat. The center of gravity was very low, giving a stable ride, but the overall effect was too unorthodox for most motorcyclists’ tastes, which have always been conservative and bicycle-frame-friendly. Not many sold.
In 1914, the business was reorganized as the Champion Motor Car Company of St. Louis, Missouri. A new machine, the Champion, was introduced with an 11 HP (68 cu-in. – 1114cc) four-cylinder F-head motor, a three-speed transmission plus reverse shifted from a car-type lever emerging from the ‘floor,’ and a shaft final drive. The seat was now a saddle on a very long stem, which permitted a large variation in seat height. Perhaps the most unusual feature of this machine, now that the rider is used to a steering wheel, etc., is the cast steel frame, which did double duty as the sump for the four-cylinder engine, as well as the forward arms for the steering system. With few sales still, the business was purchased by N.R. Sinclair, reorganized as the Militaire once again, and production was shifted to Buffalo, New York. Sinclair redesigned the chassis, swapping out the steering wheel for a set of conventional handlebars, and ditched the sump-cum-frame for an underslung steel chassis, more akin to automotive practice. The overall length equaled the pre-1916 Henderson at 65 inches, and perhaps the Militaire was unique in the motorcycle world for using wooden-spoked ‘artillery’ wheels, carrying automotive 3-inch by 28-inch clincher tires.
Sinclair’s dream burst in 1917, and the design was sold to the Militor Corporation of New Jersey, who seemed to think the name might bode well with America’s entry into World War I, even though the machine was totally unsuitable for the muddy fields of Flanders. Still, a few were sold to the military, but it wasn’t enough to keep the business afloat, and by 1920 the design had passed through two more owners (Knox Motors of Springfield and the Bullard Machine Tool Co. of Bridgeport). That 1920 version had an OHV four-cylinder motor of 87.5 cu-in. (1434cc), which was impressive indeed, but the machine needed development work to cure persistent faults. But it was a dream that few wanted at the time, although that has changed in retrospect. Fans of unusual American machinery, and four-cylinder motorcycles especially, have taken the Militaire and its many iterations to heart, and it has become intensely collectible.
This 1915 Militaire Model 2 has been meticulously restored. It was purchased at the Harrah's 1985 Auction as Lot #70, and includes all documentation.55

Hand Natural Soap Award Winning
Nowadays, the increase in the price of gas is a phenomenon that cannot be called erratic. It is an event that angers the general public. But one that people have to endure, come to terms with and tighten their belts to cope with. The last two decades have seen some of the most unusual increases in the price of petrol, and as a result, the cost of other goods is also rising.
Petrol and diesel are non-renewable forms of energy. Simply put, they are resources that cannot be easily replenished, or resources whose supply is limited. The main sources of energy in the world today are coal, oil and natural gas, known as fossil fuels. Unfortunately, fossil fuels are not renewable. Extracting fossil fuels from the earth is becoming increasingly difficult as they become more scarce, but the demand is becoming more urgent as these fossil fuels are used in almost all industries from the largest to the smallest.
Therefore, renewable forms of energy are the subject of many studies and discussions. Innovations in renewable energy generation are coming into the spotlight and seemingly Hand Natural Soap Award Winning unlikely sources of renewable energy are becoming the latest trend. These include glycerol, a by-product of saponification or the process of soap making and transesterification or the production of biodiesel. Glycerol can account for 10% of the by-products of biodiesel production. Glycerol is also known by the more commercial names glycerin and glycerol.
One of the studies dealing with glycerol was carried out by researchers at Oxford University. This group of scientists succeeded in producing biofuel from glycerol, which is a waste product in many industries. They have developed a method that converts glycerol into methanol. The process uses a metal catalyst to separate the methanol. Today, methanol is mostly produced from natural gas. It is used extensively in industrial chemistry.
Another study came from the Department of Chemical and Environment Engineering at the University of California, Riverside. The process they developed combined surplus glycerol and surplus biomass from biodiesel production to make combustible pellets for use as an alternative to coal.
A Rice University study looked at the potential of fermenting glycerol to produce ethanol. Since about 0.75 lb of glycerol is produced for every gallon of biodiesel, this would be a very practical way to produce energy. The use of microorganisms in fermentation is what makes this research special. Klebsiella and Citrobacter are glycerol-fermenting bacterial species, while E. coli synthesise glycerol via a respiratory pathway.
A study by the controversial and award-winning Galen Suppes, a professor of chemical engineering at the University of Missouri, has developed a process to convert glycerol into propylene glycol. Propylene glycol can be used as an alternative to ethylene propyl. Ethylene propyl is used as an antifreeze for cars and other motor vehicles. It is derived from petroleum and is a toxic chemical. Propylene glycol, on the other hand, is a safe and sustainable substitute.
Biodiesel production has led to a large surplus of glycerol. Although glycerol is used in almost all industries, its use for sustainable energy is a relatively new concept, but one that has attracted a lot of attention. Glycerol has great potential in the renewable energy industry as it is cost effective and economical. It also has a positive impact on the environment as it helps to reduce the emission of nitrogen oxides in the atmosphere, which reduces air pollution and its associated impacts. Read for more info..
