What to Consider When Choosing an SUV in Honolulu
Honolulu's roads can be a bit different from those on the mainland. We've got everything from narrow city streets to winding coastal highways and bumpy volcanic trails. Here's what to keep in mind:
Ground Clearance: Some roads here can be rough and uneven. A bit of extra ground clearance can help you avoid scraping the undercarriage of your SUV.
Maneuverability: Honolulu has its fair share of narrow streets and tight parking spaces. A smaller or mid-size SUV might be easier to handle than a massive one.
Four-Wheel Drive: While not essential four-wheel drive (4WD) can be super helpful for those occasional off-roading adventures or if you encounter slippery conditions.
Fuel Efficiency: Gas prices in Hawaii tend to be higher than on the mainland. A fuel-efficient SUV can save you some serious cash at the pump.
Size and Cargo Space: Think about how much space you need. Do you often haul surfboards, camping gear, or a whole bunch of passengers?
Reliability: You want an SUV that can handle the Hawaiian humidity and salty air. Look for makes and models known for their durability.

An Unfortunate Coincidence
When Barb and I were first married we both had good jobs and indulged ourselves in some ways. Barb had always wanted a horse and I had loved sailing ever since I was a teenager at summer camp. Barb found her dream horse and spent much of her free time riding. I found a small sail boat that came with a trailer we could tow with our little car. Barb’s family had a cabin in Point Roberts where I parked the trailer with easy access to the sea.
Thanks to a generous mother-in-law, Barb and I were able to take a trip to Hawaii when we had been married about two years. Barb’s parents took a vacation in Hawaii every year and told us all the best hotels to stay at and the best places to visit. We spent a week on Oahu swimming, surfing, and visiting all the usual tourist spots. Barb noticed an ad for windjammer cruises and suggested we sign up for one. We would get to travel on an older sailing ship like the ones that used to sail across the Pacific and Atlantic oceans carrying grain and other goods. Dinner and unlimited drinks were included in the price.
The day of our cruise we climbed on a bus full of tourists along with several other bus loads all headed for a cruise. A Hawaiian girl came on the bus and announced that the bigger ship was over booked and could some people go on the smaller ship. Barb raised her hand and volunteered. The “smaller ship turned out to be a 90 foot staysail schooner called the Salee which at one time was the Vanderbilt family yacht. It had a solid teak hull and gold faucets in the bathrooms among other things. The Hawaiian girl escorted us onto another bus and later made sure we got seats next to the bar on the Salee. She also spoke to the captain of the Salee about us volunteering to travel on his ship.
We were under way in a short time and the bar was already open when we were seated. I was thoroughly enjoying the experience enhanced with a few drinks from the bar. I was surprised to be introduced to the captain who walked back to the bar to meet us volunteers. I was also surprised to learn he was from Saskatchewan, which is about as far as you can get from any ocean. I felt compelled to tell him I had a sailboat. I neglected to say it was 12 feet long. He invited to me to take the helm of the Salee. How could I refuse?
I managed to keep the Salee on course, aided by a few reminders from the captain, for much longer than I expected. My duties came to an end when dinner was served. Barb had been entertained watching an older couple slowly getting plastered with a steady stream of selections from the bar. Not long after dinner we heard that the woman of the couple had vomited her dinner over the gold faucets of one sink.
After two weeks we had to return home. We noticed the older couple from the cruise were on the same flight back to Vancouver. In those days security at airports was very loose. Passengers waiting for luggage mixed freely with people meeting arriving travelers. On arrival in Vancouver Barb saw her friend Sandy and her new boyfriend waiting near the baggage carousel. Barb had to tell Sandy all about our adventures in Hawaii, including the tale of the lady on the cruise. Barb pointed out the couple to Sandy just as Sandy’s boyfriend spotted his parents. To our horror we all realized that Sandy’s friend and Barb were pointing to the same people.

However, those in California can also shop around and obtain more than the minimum rates of California drivers. We recommend contacting some insurance companies to see that their policies are considered the best option for California. You also may be able to obtain California Farm Bureau’s minimum rate in some areas, so it’s important to check with the company to see what you’re eligible for with your California Farm Bank auto policy. This is a great option for those who are looking for car insurance, but it is not the best option for those who have a high deductible on their California.
Personal Insurance
Personal Insurance Services, Inc. A business is a financial institution that has paid for the purchase of stock and securities, the disposition of which is based on the issuance by the insurer to purchase or borrow against the proceeds of the insurance policy. With the loss of both the insurer and the underlying policy, the policyholder is obligated to use the funds to repair or replace the losses the carrier suffered, but may not do otherwise or is subject to losses of other types of assets or liabilities. When the insurance carrier takes a loan on the policy, the insurer pays the loan with interest. However, there is a loan that is payable only after payments have been missed by the insurance carrier. Therefore, the loss of this loan could be subject to damage of another type of asset as the result of the loss of coverage (e.g. loss of income from the business). These are known as the “risk factors” of liability insurance for business owners and businesses. In essence, risk factors are the types of assets.

Planning a trip to Hawaii is something many people dream of. With its stunning beaches, dramatic volcanic landscapes, and lush green hills, it’s one of the most beautiful places we’ve visited but also the most expensive.
While we do think the islands are worth the high price, to make the most of your stay, it’s essential to plan in advance.
These tips will help you plan the perfect trip to Hawaii.
Best Island to Visit in Hawaii
Hanalei Bay in Kauai
Choosing the best island to visit is one of the most challenging parts of planning a trip to Hawaii. They are all diverse with lots to offer, so it just depends what you are looking for.
Most visitors to Hawaii visit one of these four islands:
Oahu – The most visited and developed island is home to the large city of Honolulu and the famous and very crowded Waikiki Beach. You can surf huge waves on the North Shore and visit the museum and memorials at Pearl Harbour. You’ll find the most shopping, dining, and nightlife options here. It’s the easiest island to get around by public transport.
Maui – The second most visited island has beautiful beaches, world-class whale watching, and the Road to Hana drive where you can see waterfalls, bamboo forest, and red and black sand beaches. You can also watch the sun rise above a volcanic crater and visit wineries and lavender farms in Upcountry. There’s a wide range of resorts, dining, shopping, and activities as well as natural attractions.
Big Island – The largest island is the youngest, so it’s not as green as the other islands and has more lava landscapes. If you want to see an active volcano, this is the island to visit. The landscapes are incredibly diverse from beautiful white sand beaches to snow-capped mountains.
Kauai – Known as The Garden Isle, Kauai is the most lush and green of the islands. The jagged green cliffs of the stunning Napali Coast are the big draw, but there are also lovely beaches, waterfalls, and multi-coloured canyons. A helicopter ride over the island is spectacular, and there are plenty of hiking trails. Kauai has become popular, but it isn’t as developed as Maui or Oahu.
Kauai’s Napali Coast
If you are looking to get off-the-beaten-track, you could consider visiting one of these smaller, much less visited islands:
Molokai – Known as The Friendly Isle, on Molokai you’ll find a slow pace of life and more native Hawaiians, but less choice of accommodation and activities. It’s also home to the leper colony of Kalaupapa, which I became fascinated with after reading a couple of these Hawaii books.
Lanai – For many years Lanai was a pineapple plantation and it’s now home to a few luxury resorts. If you want to enjoy the secluded beaches without the high price tag, the ferry from Lahaina on Maui only takes an hour so you could visit on a day trip.
The character of each island also depends on which part you visit. All the islands have a rainy side where the scenery is lush and green and a dry side where you’ll usually get more sun. They are both worth visiting, which is why we decided to split our island stays between two or three locations.
We had 3.5 weeks in Hawaii and chose to divide our time between Kauai and Maui, with one night in Honolulu before our flight to Japan. We loved them both, and there’s so much to do on each island that we’re glad we didn’t try to add in an extra island.
We plan to visit the Big Island and maybe Molokai on our next trip, although we’d also happily return to Kauai and Maui.
For more details on our trip, see our Maui itinerary and the best things to do on Kauai.
Our friends Tom and Jenny have visited the Big Island many times and share their favourite things to do.

Before You Arrive in Hawaii
Do
Save up – Hawaii is expensive and you’ll enjoy it more if you aren’t worrying about every penny. We spent $267 per person per day including everything except flights from the mainland US. You could spend less by travelling in the off season, choosing non-beachfront accommodation, and skipping pricey tours. You could also spend a lot more by staying in luxury resorts and eating out for every meal.
Visit in the winter to see humpback whales – We were astounded by how many we saw in Maui in February. January to March are the best months, but you might see a few from November to May. Winter weather can be cooler and rainier, but we still had mostly sunny days and the ocean is swimmable year round.
Visit in the off season to save money – In the spring (April and May) and autumn (September to mid-November), the islands are less crowded, prices are lower, and the weather is excellent.
Book your accommodation far in advance – Especially if you are travelling in the high season, want an ocean view, or are travelling to places like Hana or Upcountry on Maui where accommodation is limited. We searched for options on Booking, Airbnb, and VRBO.
Consider a condo rather than a resort – For families, stays of a week or more, and for those on a budget, renting a condo with a kitchen is a great way to save money. There are many to choose from and some have resort facilities like pools and beachfront locations. We stayed in condos for most of our stay and Kiahuna Plantation on Poipu Beach in Kauai was one of our favourites.
Kiahuna Beach
Search on Kiwi for the best flight deals – The cheapest rates will be from Los Angeles or other West Coast cities. Southwest now flies to Hawaii at low rates. You can also get affordable flights from Asia (especially Japan) to Honolulu.
Fly in and out of different islands – Maximise your time on the islands by flying into one island (such as Kauai) and out of another (such as Maui). I was surprised by how many affordable direct flights there are from the US mainland to places other than Honolulu.
Rent a car – It’s the best (and often only) way to get around. At busy times they can run out, so book far in advance. We used Rental Cars to find the best deal and just booked the cheapest economy car.
Consider splitting your time between two or three locations on each island – If you want to do a lot of exploring, this will help avoid long drives to attractions. We did this on Kauai and Maui and it worked out well.
Red Sand Beach in Hana
Book Haleakala sunrise in advance – If you want to see Maui’s most popular sunrise, you must book up to 60 days in advance. If you miss out, try again two days before when more tickets are released.
Bring reusable shopping bags – Plastic bags are banned on the islands.
Pack a sweater – While most of the time you’ll only need summer clothing and beachwear, it can get chilly on morning boat trips or if you go to higher elevations (like Upcountry in Maui or Waimea Canyon on Kauai) especially in the winter. Sunrise at Haleakala is literally freezing and you’ll appreciate as many layers as possible.
Bring spices – If you are self-catering, you’ll save money by bringing a small amount of spices with you. We bought some at the bulk-buy section of a supermarket on the mainland.
Pack hiking sandals – We wore these all the time and they were perfect for beaches and hiking. Many beaches have rough access trails so you’ll appreciate something more than flip-flops. Simon wore the Teva Terra Fi Lite sandals and I have the Merrell Terran Lattice sandals.
Learn a few Hawaii words – Even if it’s just Aloha (hello and goodbye but also love and compassion) and Mahalo (thank you). I picked up vocabulary by reading the astounding novel Shark Dialogues by Kiana Davenport (which I highly recommend every visitor reads).
Don’t
Plan to visit more than one island per week – You’ll spend too much of your precious vacation time travelling and there’s so much to do on each island.
Forget hidden fees – The listed price for hotels and resorts is rarely what you’ll actually pay. You’ll have to add tax and often a resort fee, cleaning fee (for condos), and parking charge. Check the final total price when comparing accommodation options.
Visit during holidays – Try to avoid the busiest times of year, especially Christmas and New Year when crowds and prices soar. Thanksgiving week is another busy time. If you must visit then, book far in advance.
Stay on the beach (maybe) – If you are on a tight budget you’ll save by staying a short walk or drive from the beach. Airbnb is a good place to look for budget accommodation. That said, we splurged on beachfront accommodation and loved it.
Sunset at Kiahuna
In Hawaii
Do
Read novels set in Hawaii – Learn more about Hawaii’s fascinating culture and turbulent history by reading one of these books about Hawaii while you relax on the beach.
Schedule your most important activities early – Weather can change and cancel activities like boat trips and helicopter rides, so make sure you’ll have time to reschedule.
Waterfalls in Kauai from a helicopter
Use reef-safe sunscreen – Hawaii has banned the sale of sunscreen that uses coral-harming chemicals. You can pick some up from Longs Drugs, which we found surprisingly affordable.
Sign up to the Snorkel Report on Maui – You’ll get an email every morning with tips on the best beaches to visit that day. They also rent inexpensive snorkelling and beach gear.
Check the Hawaii Beach Safety website – To find out which beaches are safe for swimming or best for surfing. The Kauai Explorer Surf Report is also useful.
Go whale watching – It was one of our favourite experiences in Hawaii. We chose a small boat trip with Makai Adventures from Lahaina in Maui and loved it so much we went twice.
Hike – All the islands have beautiful trails from easy coastal walks to challenging multi-day treks. It’s a great free way to enjoy the beauty of the islands.
Hiking the Pipiwai Trail in Maui
Rent a Tommy Bahama beach chair and umbrella – Our condos came with these, but you can rent them on the islands inexpensively. They have backpack straps for easy carrying and make beach hopping much more comfortable.
Visit a farmer’s market – The fresh produce is usually cheaper and better quality than the supermarkets and there are lots of tasty treats and foodie souvenirs to enjoy.
Cool off with shave ice – This delicious icy treat is so much better than we expected. Add a scoop of macadamia ice-cream on the bottom for maximum tastiness.
Enjoy a Mai Tai on the beach – Touristy yes, but it’s a classic Hawaii experience and these tasty rum cocktails come in cool Tiki glasses.
Drive the Road to Hana on Maui – Most people do this in one day, but we loved spending a few nights in Hana to explore without the crowds.
Wai‘anapanapa State Park is a Maui highlight
Eat all the banana bread – Especially in the Hana area, homemade banana bread sold at farm stalls is so good.
Indulge in chocolate-covered macadamia nuts – We were addicted to the ones by Moana Loa.
Let local drivers pass you – They know the winding roads better than you and drive at a faster pace, so pull over and let them pass.
See Kauai from above – Our doors-off helicopter trip on Kauai was mind-blowing.
Don’t
Eat in restaurants for every meal – Restaurants are expensive and by self-catering in our condo we saved a huge amount of money. Even if you don’t have a kitchen, you can pick up a pre-made picnic lunch from a supermarket and enjoy it on the beach. Some of our tastiest meals were from food trucks which are far cheaper than restaurants. Hana in Maui and Hanalei in Kauai had the best selection of trucks.
Underestimate the ocean – Conditions can be dangerous and change quickly and drownings do happen. If you’re not sure it’s safe, don’t swim.
Turn your back on the ocean – Huge waves can come out of nowhere when you are swimming or even walking along the shore.
Fight a rip current – If you get caught in a current, keep calm, float, and wave for help. Go with the current and conserve your energy.
Touch sea turtles or monk seals – You are likely to come across wildlife on the beaches, but it’s illegal to get too close or touch them.
Monk seals and humans share Poipu Beach on Kauai
Trespass – Please respect private property. While all beaches are open to the public, they don’t all have public access routes.
Litter – Don’t leave anything behind on beaches or hiking trails.
Steal any rocks or sand.
Touch or step on coral.
Leave valuables in your car – And keep any luggage hidden out of sight in the trunk.
Laugh at the hula – It’s not just a dance for tourists, but a serious part of local culture.
Refuse a lei (flower garland) – It’s a symbol of affection and Aloha so wear it with gratitude and don’t take it off in front of the person who gave it to you.
Wear shoes into someone’s house.
Rush – Don’t feel the pressure to do everything. Make sure you allow time just to relax by the pool or on the beach. Slow down and enjoy these beautiful islands.

Maintenance Matters: What Hawaiian Drivers Need to Know About Electric and Gasoline Cars
Hawaii’s breathtaking landscapes and unique climate present distinct challenges for vehicle maintenance. Whether you’re driving a cutting-edge electric car (EV) or a trusty gasoline vehicle, knowing how to care for your car is essential for a smooth and safe experience. At City Auto Sales Hawaii, we’ve guided countless customers in choosing and maintaining their vehicles. From cars for sale in Honolulu to used Car Dealer, we’re here to help.
Maintenance for Electric Vehicles
Electric vehicles like the Tesla Model 3 and Hyundai Kona EV are designed with simplicity in mind, requiring less maintenance than traditional gasoline cars. Without a combustion engine, there’s no need for oil changes, spark plug replacements, or exhaust system repairs. This translates to fewer trips to the mechanic, saving time and money.
Brake pads in EVs also last longer due to regenerative braking, which converts energy lost during braking into power for the battery. However, Hawaiian drivers must stay vigilant about battery health. Regular software updates and occasional checks on charging capacity ensure EVs like the Chevrolet Bolt remain efficient and reliable.
Salt air in coastal areas, common across Hawaii, can affect EV charging ports and connections. Drivers in regions like Kailua should clean charging ports periodically to prevent corrosion, especially if they live near the beach.
Maintenance for Gasoline Cars
Gasoline cars like the Toyota and Honda CR-V require more frequent attention but remain practical for many Hawaiian drivers. Routine oil changes, filter replacements, and brake maintenance are essential to keep these vehicles running smoothly. For adventurous drivers tackling rugged terrain on the Big Island, suspension checks and tire rotations are also vital.
Heat and humidity in Hawaii can take a toll on gasoline engines and cooling systems. Regular coolant flushes prevent overheating, while inspections of belts and hoses reduce the risk of breakdowns. Vehicles like the Ford Explorer, often used for family trips, benefit greatly from proactive maintenance schedules.
Environmental Considerations
Hawaiian weather, while beautiful, presents unique challenges for both EVs and gasoline cars. The island’s salty air, high humidity, and volcanic ash can accelerate wear on components. EVs like the 2023 NISSAN ALTIMA and gasoline cars like the Toyota Highlander both need extra attention to prevent rust and corrosion.
Drivers should rinse their vehicles regularly, especially after driving along coastal roads. Using protective coatings on the undercarriage and paint can help extend the life of any car, whether it’s powered by electricity or gasoline.

Most Effective Ways To Overcome Chocolate Place Of Origin’s Problem | chocolate place of origin
When Angela Villa was a adolescent growing up in southern Florida, her parents were actual austere about what the ancestors ate and thus, amber was not accustomed during Angela’s childhood. She couldn’t alike go trick-or-treating for that reason.
Chocolate brownie – Wikipedia – chocolate place of origin | chocolate place of origin
So what does she do as an adult?
Angela is a chocolatier and co-owner of Garden Island Amber on Hawaii’s Kauai island. She and her bedmate were the aboriginal on the island to abound and autumn cacao and about-face it into amber for bartering purposes. Three mornings a week, they advance cacao acreage tours teaching mainlanders and amber lovers the aerial art of growing cacao.
Loving Angela’s alienated choices and to abutment my own addiction to chocolate, I active up for one of her tours during our aftermost appointment to Hawaii. It was a rainy, mild day and my beard coiled mercilessly, but her bout was a alluring acquaintance for this Southern Illinois acreage babe to apprentice about a crop that alike my brother, an Illinois adept farmer, could not accomplish abound in our ample allotment of the world.
Cacao harvest
Cacao grows alone in an breadth about 20-degrees arctic or south of the equator. The island of Kauai is the best arctic abode in the apple area it grows.
As we absolved through a garden that included Jackfruit and assistant trees, acai award and abundant added blooming plants, we abstruse that the blazon of admixture about a cacao timberline influences the acidity of the chocolate. Citrus peels, boilerplate accouterment and the shells of cacao beans accomplish a abundant mulch. We additionally abstruse that cacao is an “understory plant,” acceptation that it grows beneath the awning of added trees.
“Cacao is happiest aback it is amidst by added trees,” Angela told us. “It’s a actual brittle bulb so accompaniment plants are all-important to assure it from abundant wind and rain.”
I anticipation about the airiness of those plants as Hurricane Lane formed the Hawaiian Islands this accomplished August and hoped that the storm didn’t accident the cacao crop too badly.
A batter of amber requires about 400 amber beans. There are about 30 beans per pod and a mature, advantageous timberline produces about 100 pods. The cacao autumn in Hawaii runs amid December and February.
Dark Chocolates, Chocolates by Place of Origin – chocolate place of origin | chocolate place of origin
We visited in November, so Angela accustomed us to scrape the alfresco of the cacao pod to see if it was accessible for harvest. Not quite. We again ashamed the shells to acknowledge the beans. A complete pod, which can be red or yellow, is about the admeasurement of a football and feels a bit like one as well.
After the garden tour, we tasted Angela’s amber and she helped us accept the flavors we were experiencing, not clashing a wine tasting. But here’s a tip: accompany affluence of tissues or Wet-Ones. Amber tasting in the calefaction and clamminess of Hawaii can get appealing messy. It melts all over your aperture and your hands.
Visit during a amber festival
Several places throughout Hawaii, including the National Tropical Botanical Garden aloof beyond the artery from Garden Island Chocolates, abound cacao and action tours. On the Big Island (Hawaii), the Original Hawaii Amber Factory in Keauhou-Kona offers hour-long tours that, in my opinion, are focused added on affairs you amber than teaching you about cacao.
If you appointment Hawaii in April, analysis for the exact dates of the anniversary Big Island Amber Fest, an accident that includes agronomics seminars, comestible demonstrations and more.
Another anniversary is the anniversary Hawaii Amber Anniversary on Oahu in mid-October. This is a one-day accident afterwards a acreage tour, but amid the speakers are cacao growers who allocution about the agronomical apparatus of creating a aged accumulation of chocolate.
As you are tasting amber throughout the Hawaiian Islands, you will apparently appointment article alleged Donkey Balls.
We were active forth Highway 11 against Kona on the Big Islands aback our son yelled from the aback seat, “Dad, we accept to stop!”
Fearing car sickness, we pulled over as anon as we could and appropriate into a parking atom in advanced of a assurance for “The Original Donkey Balls.”
Dark Chocolates, Chocolates by Place of Origin – chocolate place of origin | chocolate place of origin
It was that sign, not car sickness, that was the account of our son’s outburst.
Despite its somewhat blue name, we bound abstruse that Donkey Assurance are a aperitive amber bonbon that does bifold assignment by administration a allotment of Hawaiian history.
The adventure starts with Karl and Lisa Ellis, mainlanders who confused to Hawaii Island in 2008. They bought a coffee boutique in the boondocks of Kainaliu, about 10 afar from Kona, and Karl began experimenting with amber recipes.
As the Ellises became added affianced with the community, they abstruse of the Nightingale donkey, a audible brand that was acclimated for ancestors in the bounded coffee and macadamia nut harvest.
Macadamia basics abound on copse in a round, blooming bark that looks like a ball. As the donkeys came bottomward from the abundance accustomed baskets of those blooming balls, workers would alarm out “donkey balls” to active added workers that a amount of macadamia basics would anon be at the barn to be processed.
Today’s Donkey Assurance affection a macadamia nut amidst by layers of amber and added coatings. Amid their best sellers are Blue Balls, Salty Assurance and Prickly Balls. The Prickly Assurance accommodate pineapple. There are additionally monkey balls, dupe assurance and craven balls.
The success of Donkey Assurance in the accomplished decade has aggressive copycats throughout the Hawaiian Islands. Unfortunately, the Ellises and their advocate accept abstruse that “Donkey Balls” is not a trade-markable term, although “Original Donkey Balls” is trademarked.
“Our advocate was able to brand ‘Numb Nuts,’” said Lisa. “He was actual appreciative of himself afterwards that one.”
Caring for Nightingale Donkeys
Sweets,Snacks,Chocolate,Pickles,Coffee,Tea & more – PlaceofOrigin.in – chocolate place of origin | chocolate place of origin
The use of Nightingale Donkeys in the bounded macadamia and coffee autumn concluded about brief afterwards Apple War II. The surplus of jeeps no best bare by the aggressive artlessly was added efficient. In abounding cases, the donkeys were larboard to roam wild. Over the years, the donkeys accept reproduced to such numbers that, at times, they accept become a nuisance and assurance hazard for bounded association as they eat gardens, abort manicured lawns and aberrate assimilate the roadways, abundant like agrarian deer do in the Midwest.
Therefore, a cardinal of accomplishment and acceptance programs, including the Humane Society, abode the needs of the Nightingale Donkeys. A allocation of the sales of Original Donkey Assurance supports abounding of these programs.
A cup of java
We met a Nightingale Donkey alleged Charlie a few afar on bottomward the alley at the Kona Coffee Living History Farm. This is a charge stop for anyone who has anytime had a cup of coffee.
The armpit interprets a aeon in the backward 1800s, about the time coffee was alien to Hawaii by the Japanese. If you like, bandage on a lauhala blade bassinet and aces your ample of ablaze red berries. Yes, accomplished coffee beans are alleged berries. The copse abound to about eight anxiety tall, so you’ll additionally be accustomed a pole to grab a annex and cull it against you in adjustment to ability the accomplished berries on the tree.
Most Kona coffee is produced on baby ancestors farms of aloof a few acreage each. There are about 800 baby farms in the Kona commune that accomplish about two actor pounds of coffee beans anniversary year. The harvest — all done by hand — is from August to January.
Hawaii’s Big Island is the alone abode in the United States area the altitude is the absolute aggregate of calefaction and damp bare for Arabica coffee beans to grow. Specifically, the altitude is begin aural a bandage aloof a few hundred yards advanced about 1,500 anxiety aloft sea akin on the Hualalai and Mauna Loa abundance slopes, authoritative Kona coffee rare, adorable and yes, rather expensive.
If you appetite some acumen into avant-garde coffee production, stop in at Tom Greenwell’s acreage a few afar further bottomward the road. His 100-acre coffee acreage has been in the Greenwell ancestors back the 1850s. Tom’s great-grandmother buried 100 of these copse by duke aback she was 70 years old. The acreage now has about 65,000 trees, but great-grandma’s copse are still bearing berries.
Tom’s job is to alike tours of the acreage and explain avant-garde day coffee production. One of the abundant sins of the world, according to Greenwell, is a aphotic buzz coffee.
Chocolate Origin – the place for chocolate desserts and now a new … – chocolate place of origin | chocolate place of origin
“When you buzz the beans too aphotic or too hot, you alpha tasting the carbon and not the coffee,” he says. And don’t alike ask him about autumn coffee in the refrigerator, a bitter sin in Greenwell’s book.
For austere coffee drinkers, plan your Hawaii vacation in November to alike with the Kona Coffee Festival, ten canicule abounding with parades, art shows, aliment and coffee pairings, and added contest to asperse visitors in the coffee culture.

Never Pay For a Hotel Again: Savvy Travelers Swap Their Homes Instead
iStock; realtor.com
Vacations are supposed to be relaxing. But by the time you’ve booked your travel, found the perfect place to stay, and then forked over a small fortune for that fancy hotel or Airbnb stay, the getaway has become more stressful than it would have been to just stay home.
That’s why more people are turning to home swapping. Again.
The practice of home swaps began in earnest back in the 1950s. But now it’s been given a new, gig-economy-type makeover, making it easier then ever for wanderlust-ridden folks to pull off. Over the last decade, a slew of home-swapping websites, like GuestToGuest and Love Home Swap, have cropped up. These sites allow travelers from all over the world to connect and arrange stays in fully furnished homes, in some cases equipped with gourmet kitchens, pets and even a car—without exchanging a cent (most sites charge an annual fee). That’s the premise of more than 70 home exchange websites, which allow homeowners (and renters, with permission from their landlords) to trade their homes for days, weeks, even months at a time.
The only catch: Participants must allow strangers to vacation in their own residences. Are free accommodations in far-flung locales worth a stranger sleeping in your bed, soaking in your tub or thumbing through whatever you haven’t locked away? For some thrifty folks, the answer is a resounding yes.
The practice has allowed retired social worker Gerri Molettiere to live abroad for free, doing 20 exchanges in nine countries since 2010 in Spain, Costa Rica, Iceland, and Ireland through HomeExchange.com. The site charges a $150 annual fee.
Listing a home for swap is a lot like listing a home for sale: You post pictures of your place on an exchange website, along with some info about your home and yourself. Then you browse other homes and correspond with their owners to negotiate swap dates and details.
Trades might be simultaneous, where each participant swaps homes for the same period, or delayed, with one set living with the other as guests in a spare room or guest house. Some sites, such as GuestToGuest, allow swappers to exchange points instead of visits in their homes. Members earn points for hosting travelers and can use them when they stay in someone else’s home.
To many, it’s a more immersive way to experience a new place.
“I like being in a house because you slow down your pace,” says Molettiere, 67. “You take your time and enjoy where you are.”
Gerri Molettiere swaps her Colorado home for accommodations all over the world.
The oldest of the swapping companies, HomeLink USA and Intervac, were founded in 1953, long before the internet. Back then, members would have to browse catalogs of homes and write actual letters (sent through the post office!) to arrange exchanges. The web, obviously, simplified the process.
GuestToGuest, founded in 2011, is now the largest platform, boasting a network of more than 413,000 homes in 187 countries. It purchased its biggest competitor, HomeExchange, which has more than 65,000 listings in 150 countries, last year. (The sites are still run separately.)
But size isn’t everything in home swapping—and specialty sites abound. Some are tailored for those in certain professions, such as airline employees (Airline House Exchange) or teachers (Teacher Home Swap). Others have age or religious restrictions. And then there are sites for folks seeking homes near ski resorts (IVHE.com), or in certain countries.
Would you let a stranger sleep in your bed? Frequent home swappers Syd and Joie Galloway on a trip to Siesta Key Beach, FL.
Syd and Joie Galloway
But while the new online process may require less effort, there’s an old-fashioned stumbling block to home-swapping for many folks: the fact that a total stranger will be using their space while they’re not around.
But unlike Airbnb or other pay-to-stay websites, the people signing up for exchanges have some skin in the game—namely, their homes and possessions.
“The only way to participate in this is to offer your own home to other people, and so it tends to attract a very honest, respectful clientele,” says home swapper Andrew Rich, 60, of San Francisco. Most sites offer insurance, and can also arbitrate disputes.
Then there’s the fear that swaps will fall apart—perhaps at the last minute.
Syd and Joie Galloway, a Washington, DC-based couple in their 70s, estimate they’ve done more than 140 home swaps over 30-plus years, and only once did an exchange fall through. They called their swap partner shortly before their scheduled trip to Hawaii, and found out that her husband had just died. The Galloways contacted HomeLink, the swap service they were using.
“In no time, at all they found us another host and exchange in Oahu, HI. … We ended up exchanging with that family four times,” says Syd Galloway.
But while people have relatives to visit and weddings and conferences to attend all over, the reality is that those living in big cities or hot vacation destinations are more easily able to arrange swaps.
“I could live in France for the next year if I wanted to, because so many people there want to stay at my house,” says Betsy Hicks, a self-employed 52-year-old with a centrally located, two-bedroom apartment in San Francisco.
A new way to make friends
The pleasures of home swapping may extend beyond the vacation itself. Something about staying in someone else’s home really creates a bond—and for many swappers, the relationships they build are an essential part of the appeal.
“We stay in close contact with our partners during the exchange and that’s part of the fun too, seeing them enjoy your area,” says Weston.
The Galloways keep a scrapbook of their travels and the folks they’ve met along they way. It comes in handy when they hear from them again, sometimes a decade later.
As Joie Galloway says: “You should see our Christmas card list.”

Investing Lessons From A Surreal 2017
At the beginning of the year, I decided to track my investments with a detailed spreadsheet because my cash flow was increasing and I wanted to make sure the money was being properly deployed based on my risk tolerance. If I force myself to think for hours about how to invest my money, hopefully I won’t rashly spend it on completely wasteful things such as a sports car that can’t fit a baby seat or a vacation property I’ll hardly ever use.
On the flip side, ever since the housing crash I’ve had a heightened fear of losing money, especially since I haven’t had a job since 2012. It takes around three years as an entrepreneur to feel confident you won’t starve on the streets, especially if you become a parent during the process. As a result, I tended to hoard cash, which is suboptimal in a bull market.
This post will go over my investment thought process by category for 4Q2017 and conclude with some investing lessons learned about the year. The goal of tracking our investments is to try and take full advantage of a bull market in a risk appropriate way.
Financial Samurai 4Q2017 Investment Review
In summary, I mobilized a total of $2,263,319 into various investments in 2017. $750,000 of the $2,263,319 was invested in conservative investments (bonds, mortgage pay down, and home improvement) that should return 4% or more gross a year. The remaining $1,510,000 was invested in riskier assets with a target return of between 8% – 18%. My goal is to achieve a 10% total annual return, but will gladly settle for 8%.
The $2,263,319 invested was largely helped by a rental home sale in June 2017, which gave me ~$1,788,000 in proceeds ($2,740,000 sale price). Due to declining rents, expensive valuations, potentially rising mortgage rates, higher property taxes, potentially negative tax policy changes, PITA tenants, better investment opportunities, and less time due to a newborn, I thought it best to sell one of three properties in CA.
Overall, I reduced my risk exposure by $476,681 and increased my cash position by $450,000. Despite the decrease in exposure and increased balance sheet, I still have synthetic full exposure to risk assets due to $1,092,000 of remaining mortgage debt from my primary residence and vacation property rental.
Real Estate
Because I wanted to see if I could find a winter property deal, I held onto a lot of cash. I found two homes that I liked, but the sellers wouldn’t entertain my low ball offers. I wasn’t even sure I’d be happy with the purchase even if they did accept my offer because of all the maintenance and tenant issues I’d have to deal with again. For example, one home had a serious leak in the garage that kind of gave me a little PTSD from all the leaks I experienced at my old rental house.
By Dec 1, I realized I was never going to buy another property in San Francisco again, so I decided to invest another $300,000 in the RealtyShares domestic equity fund after meeting up with the team again for dinner. Since the summer, the fund invested in a flex-industrial deal in Chicago MSA, a multi-family in Phoenix, a strip mall in Orlando MSA, and a multi-family in Canyon Lake, TX.
Although a total of $800,000 in real estate crowdfunding sounds like a lot, I view it as buying a $800,000 portfolio of 12+ different properties across the country at much lower valuations and much higher net rental yields compared to having $2,740,000 in one very expensive rental property in San Francisco that is now at risk of depreciating due to declining rents and new tax legislation that limits mortgage interest deduction and SALT deduction.
The next physical property I will buy will be a primary residence in Oahu. The plan is to move back to Oahu within the next five years before my son starts kindergarten. I really like the idea of buying physical property to personally enjoy, and then renting it out years down the road if you have the funds and the desire to move. If the rental experience goes well, I’ll keep the property. If not, I’ll sell it and follow my BURL real estate investing strategy.
Stocks: Bought The Dips
In October, I started getting excited about the potential passage of a tax plan that would lower taxes for large corporations and businesses like mine with pass-through income.
As a result, I invested more aggressively into stocks because I felt the market would respond favorably if the plan passed. Further, my desire to buy another property kept going down. Corporate earnings are estimated to get a 8% – 10% boost and small business with pass-through income might see an even larger gain.
The timing of this tax plan is fortuitous given I’ve spent 8.5 years building a lifestyle business that has now reached a level where it will benefit from tax changes. Nothing has made me more bullish than business tax reform, which is why I need to keep my emotions in check through this investment review process.
Finally, I superfunded my son’s 529 plan with $70,000 while his mom and grandma contributed $14,000 each. We figured this would be a good method to diversify contributions since once you superfund, you can’t contribute for four years. It’s good 529 plan owners have the flexibility to use the proceeds for grade school education now.

Bonds: A Positive Surprise
Bonds performed well in 2017 with the the long-bond index fund TLT up ~10%. My California muni bond positions are up ~3.5% + ~4.5% gross adjusted yield for a total gross gain of about 9%. Not bad given I was just looking for around a 4% gross gain.
Once the 10-year bond yield gets back to its 12-month high of 2.6%, I’ll be looking to buy more bonds again. I see a 3% cap on the 10-year bond yield for 2018.

Mortgage Pay Down
If you add on the $815,000 of mortgage debt I paid off by selling my rental house, I’ll have paid off a total of $921,000 of mortgage debt in 2017. It feels fantastic to have almost a million dollars less in debt, even if the interest rate was low. By consistently paying off random chunks of extra principal throughout the year, it was easy to pay down an additional $106,646 in principal.
I’ve still got about $1,092,000 in mortgage debt to pay down between my vacation property and my primary residence. I certainly don’t need so much cash, but I want to continue legging into risk assets just in case there’s some type of downturn or a change in my lifestyle.
My plan is to pay off my vacation property mortgage by 2023. I probably won’t pay off my primary residence within five years because I need as much cash as possible to buy our future dream residence in Hawaii.

Everything Else
I’ve committed $200,000 to my friend’s second venture debt fund. They’ve called $96,219 within one year. I expect them to call the remaining $103,781 by the end of 2018. The fund’s objective is to earn a 15% – 20% IRR. Based on the performance of his first fund, a more likely return of 10% – 13% should be expected.
It felt great not having to do any home improvement projects since 1Q because we now have a baby who requires precious sleep. Any disruption of sleep would have been infuriating for all of us since my wife and I were like zombies for the first three months.
Finally, out of the $611,000 in stock investments, $50,000 of that was in highly speculative investments that have surprisingly done well.

Main Lessons Learned From Investing in 2017
My biggest mistake was not being more aggressive investing in the stock market at the beginning of the year. I didn’t have as much liquid cash because I hadn’t sold my rental house yet, but it was the Trump presidency and high valuations that gave me hesitation. I wasn’t too hopeful about tax reform either.
My best move was selling a rental house for 30X gross annual rent before the SALT deduction got limited to only $10,000 and redeploying the capital in properties around the country trading at just 10-14X gross annual rent. Life feels so much better not having to deal with housing issues anymore. It’s also nice to worry less about natural disasters.
Here are several lessons from 2017 that may help you become a better investor.
1) Try to look beyond the politics and focus on fundamentals. Given I live in San Francisco, I know plenty of people who decided to pull much of their money out of the stock market at the end of 2016. They were so blinded by their hatred of Donald Trump that they missed out on huge gains.Generally speaking, deregulation and lower taxes are good for business, which is good for business investors. Further, in my mind employment was already on the upswing and interest rates would remain accommodative.
Unless our politicians actually reform laws, there is often a disconnect between how much investors believe our politicians can do and how much they can actually do. Reduce risk if you wish. But don’t get out of risk assets completely.
2) Real estate is an easier investment over stocks. How can this be when stocks just went up ~19%? Having to reinvest my home sale proceeds was exhausting. If I didn’t have weekly reminders to invest, I wouldn’t have because of the uncertainty of what to invest in, the timing of the investment, and the actual act of deploying capital. Every investment I make gives me a little bit of anxiety due to my fear of losing money and looking like a buffoon.
With real estate, despite the leverage, all you’re doing is enjoying your home or collecting rent checks (if you’re lucky). When you’re just living, you aren’t questioning every single investment you make. Therefore, for most people who are too busy to track the market, owning real estate over the long run is an easier path to wealth. Despite my terrible tenants, the $1 million of equity gain from 2012 – 2017 was the easiest investment money I’ve ever made.
If you don’t have enough money to buy real estate, then owning an S&P 500 index fund over the long term is fine too. Just know that the longer you rent, because of inflation, the longer you will regret your decision. Inflation is an unstoppable beast that will eat you alive.
3) Think in percentages over absolute dollars. Because I had never invested more than $500,000 a year in my life, having nearly $1.8M to re-invest was intimidating. But as soon as I started breaking the investment amount into percentages, deploying capital became easier.
Find out what each asset class is as a percentage of your net worth and calculate what each new invest is as a percentage of your investable assets and net worth. This exercise is particularly helpful for frugal people whose wealth has far outstripped their spending habits.
4) Stick to an investment framework no matter what. Once you’ve decided how much you can comfortably invest each month and what type of asset allocation is best for you, execute your plan without fail. It is almost always the case you will be surprised by how much you end up accumulating or how much debt you end up paying down over time.
Wrapping Things Up
Overall, according to the final weekly personal investment performance e-mail I get from Personal Capital, my public investments returned ~15% in 2017. I’m happy with the results because my total capital exposure is significant for how much we spend. Further, my goal after leaving work was to earn a 4% – 6% tailwind a year while I build a lifestyle business.
It’s really hard for me to take on more risk because of my fear of having either one of us go back to work during the crucial first five years of our son’s life. At the same time, I can’t help but want to take full advantage of the bull market while it lasts. The further I can run up the score, the bigger the buffer during the inevitable recession.
Finally, one positive surprise I experienced this year was that once I elongated my investment time horizon to 20+ years due to the birth of my son, I became much more at peace with my risk exposure. Surely by 2037, asset prices will be higher. To invest for someone’s future feels wonderful.

Navigating the Honolulu Auto Market: A Guide to Finding Your Perfect Ride
Honolulu, the vibrant capital of Hawaii, presents a unique landscape for car buyers. With its blend of urban and island living, finding the right vehicle requires consideration of factors ranging from fuel efficiency to rust resistance. Whether you're a local resident or a newcomer to the island, understanding the Honolulu car market can help you make an informed decision.
Cars for sale Honolulu is particularly robust, offering a wide range of options for budget-conscious buyers. Local dealerships like Auto Zilla Hawaii, Cutter Auto and Tony Group maintain extensive inventories of pre-owned vehicles, often including models well-suited to island life. These dealerships frequently offer certified pre-owned programs, providing additional peace of mind for buyers concerned about vehicle history and condition.
For those seeking new cars, brands like Toyota, Honda, and Nissan are popular choices due to their reliability and fuel efficiency – important factors given Honolulu's traffic and high gas prices. Luxury brands also have a presence, with dealerships offering high-end vehicles for those looking to combine style with island practicality.
Online platforms have become increasingly important in the Honolulu car-buying process. Websites like Auto Zilla, AutoTrader and Cars.com feature listings from local dealerships, allowing buyers to compare prices and features before visiting showrooms. Local sites such as HawaiiUsedCars.com specialize in aggregating listings from across the island, providing a comprehensive view of available vehicles.
Sell used car Hawaii also plays a significant role in Honolulu's car market. Platforms like Craigslist Honolulu and Facebook Marketplace are popular for person-to-person sales. While these can offer good deals, buyers should exercise caution and thoroughly inspect vehicles before purchasing.
When shopping for a car in Honolulu, it's crucial to consider the unique aspects of island driving. Rust is a common issue due to the salty air, so checking for corrosion is essential, especially when buying used vehicles. Additionally, cars with good fuel economy are prized due to Hawaii's high gas prices.
Electric and hybrid vehicles have gained popularity in Honolulu, aligning with the state's push for sustainability. The city has been expanding its charging infrastructure, making electric vehicles an increasingly viable option for residents.
For those unsure about committing to a purchase, car-sharing services like Hui Car Share offer an alternative. These services allow users to access a variety of vehicles on a short-term basis, which can be useful for trying out different models or for visitors needing temporary transportation.
Importing vehicles from the mainland is another option some Honolulu residents consider. While this can provide access to a wider selection, it's important to factor in shipping costs and potential modifications needed to meet Hawaii's emissions standards.
Financing options in Honolulu range from traditional bank loans to credit union offers. Local financial institutions often have specialized knowledge of the island's car market and can provide tailored advice to buyers.
When it comes to timing, the Honolulu car market can be influenced by factors like tourist seasons and military rotations. Watching for end-of-model-year sales or holiday promotions can lead to good deals.
For environmentally conscious buyers, Hawaii's clean energy initiatives have led to incentives for purchasing low-emission vehicles. Researching current state and federal tax credits can potentially lead to significant savings.
Ultimately, finding the right car in Honolulu involves balancing personal needs with island-specific considerations. By leveraging online resources, visiting local dealerships, and understanding the unique aspects of Hawaiian driving, buyers can navigate the market successfully and find a vehicle that suits both their lifestyle and the aloha spirit of the islands. https://www.autozillahawaii.com/sell-used-cars.htm
