‘My Wife Did Not Convert To Islam’: Urmila Matondkar’s Husband Refutes Viral Posts

Viral posts on Facebook claim the actor turned politician converted to Islam and changed her name to ‘Maryam Akhtar Mir’ following her marriage to Kashmiri businessman and model.

Fake News India: Less than 24 hours after Urmila Matondkar joined the Indian National Congress (Congress) on Wednesday, Facebook posts have cropped up claiming the former actress embraced Islam and changed her name to ‘Maryam Akhtar Mir.’

Matondkar married Kashmiri businessman and model Mohsin Akhtar Mir in 2016.

The actor turned politician, best known for the movie ‘Rangeela’, is expected to contest from the Mumbai North Lok Sabha seat.

BOOM got in touch with Mohsin Akhtar Mir, who denied any such conversion by Matondkar after marrying him.

“It is a common trend to play up such claims before elections and we are not perturbed by any of it. My wife did not convert to Islam. Period,” Mir told BOOM.

Taking cue, Mir also clarified that Urmila has also not changed her name.

“These days celebs’ social media profiles tell a lot about them. One can go and see her profile on Instagram, she has not changed her name or added my surname, unlike many other stars. If you come to our house, we have a temple too. Even my helping staff can vouch for a fact that she has not converted to Islam.”

Several pages have posted Matondkar’s wedding photograph and captioned the image as ‘an attempt by her to fool Hindus’, which can be seen here.

Urmila Matondkar has finally joined Shiv Sena on Tuesday. Her name was proposed by the party as one of the 12 seats nominated in Maharashtra some one month ago. The actor-turned- politician has several questions fired up her way including one about her views for Kangana Ranaut, who called Urmila a soft porn star.

Matondkar clearly stated that she won’t like to intervene in the war of words between Kangana Ranaut and Shiv Sena leaders. She also cleared her liking towards Kangana and sad she isn’t a fan.

“I think much has been spoken on Kangana. No need to give her that much importance now. Everybody has the right and freedom to criticize, she is free to do it. I wish to clear this today that I never responded to her [Kangana] in my interview [earlier],” she said.

The party seniors have sad that the way Urmila handles the war of words between Shiv Sena and Ranaut is impressive. A stiff cold war started between Kangana and Shiv Sena when Kangana compared Mumbai with Pakistan Occupied Kashmir.

Urmila, who quit Congress to join Shiv Sena has said that she is impressed with the work Uddhav Thackeray and his government has done.

“It has been 14 months since I quit Congress and not 14 hours. There is a huge difference when people quit a party and immediately join another. But I think Maha [Vikas] Aghadi government has done a praiseworthy job in the state. They got only three months of normal working [before pandemic]. Uddhav ji has steered the state very well. He shows strength where needed and speaks to us like a family member when required,” said Matondkar while speaking to a posse of reporters after joining the party.

The actor gave a lengthy explanation about leaving Congress party and joining a core Hindutva party. “Hindutva doesn’t mean hating other religions. I am a Hindu by birth and my actions. I can speak a lot about religion as I have studied it. Never needed to speak about it,” she said.
