How to Choose a Quality Ruby?
Sometimes bold, sometimes delicate, always fiery and romantic, rubies are among the exquisite beauties of nature. They are one of four gemstones that are frequently set on engagement rings and other jewelry.
Tumblr media
Although rubies are always red, their color density and overall gemstone quality vary greatly. If you want to choose a good quality, beautiful ruby, you need to understand its history and how it was shaped. You should also carefully examine the color, clarity and size of each ruby.
Understanding The 4C’s Of Rubies:
1. Color – Today, gemologists seek a more universal and objective means of assessing color in rubies.  Their color, and that of other colored gemstones, is now described by the hue, tone, and saturation.  The description of the ideal color in ruby–vivid, medium-dark red to slightly purplish red–incorporates all three of these terms. The hue is the gemstone’s basic color.  While a ruby’s color is basically “red,” in many cases, purple or orange secondary colors can also be found.  While absolute red is the ideal hue, many fine rubies from Myanmar are slightly purplish red. As a ruby’s hue becomes increasingly purple or orange, the quality is thought to suffer and the ruby loses value.
2. Clarity – Rubies rarely exhibit the high clarity of fine diamonds.  Rubies are host to many different inclusions, and even the best stones are not expected to be free of inclusions when viewed at 10x magnification.  In fact, a ruby with no inclusions should be viewed with suspicion; it may be a synthetic stone or a glass imitation. The best clarity grade for ruby is “eye-clean,” which means no inclusions are visible to the naked eye.  When evaluating the clarity, experts consider the size, number, location, and overall visibility of the inclusions.
3. Carat Weight – While a five-carat stone may be considered small for an aquamarine, a quality five-carat ruby is large enough to get the attention of serious gem collectors.  As with any gem, ruby prices per carat increase with carat weight. Fine quality rubies over one carat are rare, but commercial quality rubies are commonly available in a range of different sizes.  Fine quality ruby rough is extremely expensive, so quality stones are not usually cut to calibrated sizes because it could result in a significant loss of weight.  Commercial quality ruby is more likely to conform to standard calibrated sizes.
4. Cut – The term “cut” can have several meanings when applied to rubies and other gemstones.  For example, it may describe the faceting style or shape of a finished gemstone. It may also mean a gemstone’s proportion and finish.  Proportion refers to the rough dimensions and overall symmetry of a gemstone. Finish describes the precision with which facets meet, the relative size and number of facets, and the quality of the stone’s polish.
Exclusive things are exclusive because they are uncommon, unique, and rare. On the same note, Exclusive gemstones are precious because they are only one and rare. So when you plan to buy gemstone online, make sure you are buying real ones. Nowadays, there are several options available out there in the market but you should only trust an authentic gemstone dealer. In order to invest your hard-earned money in an original piece of gem, you should only make your purchase via a trusted gemstone store like Gemsmore, the Online Gem Bazar.

How to choose a quality Emerald?
The beauty of emeralds is striking. These stones radiate hope, faithfulness and eternal love. Emeralds are frequently used to set engagement rings. They are among the four most precious stones on our planet.
Tumblr media
All emeralds are green but the color of each stone varies in depth and hue as well as its overall quality. If you want a quality emerald for an engagement ring, you need to understand the history of this exceptional stone and how it was formed. You also need to pay special attention to the color, purity and size of each emerald.
Understanding the 4Cs of Emerald Quality:
The 4C’s of color, clarity, cut and carat weight are used to grade diamonds are also used for colored gemstones as well. However, there are different standards for grading colored gems like emeralds.
1. Color – The first and foremost property emeralds are judged by is their color. A highly saturated emerald will outprice larger emeralds with less appealing color consistently, despite the rarity of larger gem sizes. Color is also not as complicated in emeralds as it is in other gems because emerald green is a very limited range from slightly yellowish green to bluish green. An ideal bluish green is typically the most desirable color, though everyone has their own preferences. To show off the best imaginable color, the three values of hue, tone, and saturation must be ideal in the gem material. Imbalances in these values can make us perceive the color differently than what it is.
2. Clarity – Emeralds are known for being included. They are a Type III gemstone, which means they almost always show inclusions. The scarce few emeralds that do not show any go for double to triple the price ones with similar color and weight do.
3. Cut – The cut, or how the emerald is faceted, has a lot of complications. First, gem cutters often cut away 50%-70% of the original emerald in order to get the gem to show its best color and sparkle. Since these gems are priced by their weight in carats, the lapidary also wants to retain as much carat weight as possible for their bottom line. A symmetrical gem with high sparkle and low extinction, or black spots, visible is also desirable too. Shallow cuts are not ideal either, usually showing a huge window through the emerald.
4. Carat Weight – In and of itself, carat weight is just the weight of the emerald. However, the implications of the weight are a little more complex since price increases exponentially with carat weight in emeralds. While color, clarity, and cut are evaluations of quality, carat weight measures rarity and directly translates that into a price tag. The second part is that different carat weights command different magnitudes of prices. If color, clarity, and cut are all equal, then the pricing will show just how rare larger emerald sizes are. For example: if you have a 2.00 carat emerald and a 4.00 carat emerald, the 4.00 carat emerald will not be double the value of the 2.00 carat emerald. It will be something like four times the price assuming the quality is equal.

How to choose a quality sapphire?
There is no standardized color-grading or quality-measuring system for sapphires, which makes choosing quality sapphires a relatively subjective process. However, sapphires that have certain features are considered more valuable and of a higher quality.
Tumblr media
Attending to the gem’s purity of color, its tone, and its clarity, for instance, can be useful when looking for a sapphire of high quality. Another way to choose a high-quality sapphire is to choose a synthetic stone, which will have fewer imperfections than a natural one.
There are 4 main things to look for in a high quality sapphire:
1) Excellent color
A sapphire that has a splotchy and uneven color is not considered one of high quality. Look for sapphires that are saturated with a single vivid color all the way through. Avoid sapphires that have brown or gray spots within.
2) No glaring inclusions
Turn the sapphire around in your hand as you hold it up to the light. This will help you see all the internal and external elements of the gem. Don’t rush the process. Take all the time necessary to see all the nooks and crannies of the gem.
3) A well proportioned cut
If you’re buying a heat-treated sapphire in a ring, necklace, or other jewelry, it should be cut in a symmetrical way. This means that the gem will be visually balanced, with one side resembling the other.
4) The price should reflect the carat size
Some sapphires are found not in mines, but made in laboratories. These synthetic sapphires are of much higher quality (and far more affordable) than natural ones, so choose synthetic sapphires whenever possible. Generally, synthetic sapphires have fewer inclusions, greater clarity, and more brilliance than natural gemstones.
Four Main Types of Gemstones
Diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds are the four most sought after gemstones in the world.
Anyone wishing to acquire an engagement ring with a dazzling stone will find in this guide some interesting information and the characteristics of these four splendors.
1. Diamond – pure beauty
Diamonds are forever
Possessing the most intense brilliance of all transparent gemstones, diamond is also the hardest material on earth, and can only be scratched by another diamond. Its name comes from the Greek  adámas,  which means “unbreakable”.
Diamonds reflect light in an unparalleled way, especially when placed under a multi-directional light source. Every slight movement of the hand will make a diamond ring shine brightly and attract all eyes.
Understanding the 4 Cs
In order to determine their quality, diamonds are graded using the four Cs international standard system:  color  (color),  cut  (size),  clarity  (purity), and  carat weight  (carat weight)
2. Ruby – the talisman of love
A devouring passion
Ruby is part of the corundum family and is famous for its deep red color and vibrant shine. Bearing the color of love and desire, the ruby is the ideal romantic gift for a woman in love.
Record statistics
Over the years, auctions of high-quality rubies have achieved record prices, making rubies the highest value colored gemstone per carat.
Rutile and silk
Pure rubies have fine inclusions called needles. When they cross in groups, they create a so-called "silky" phenomenon, softening the color and causing the light to reflect on the facets of the stone.
3. Emerald – the rare stone
Rich in symbolism
Known for its most intense green hue and the depth of color that few gemstones possess, emerald is the stone symbolizing renewal and hope.
A royal story
This rich green colored stone has been a source of great fascination among royalty over the centuries. Cleopatra, the famous queen of Egypt, had a soft spot for emeralds and loved wearing them.
The perfect size
Emerald frequently has complex inclusions called "garden", which makes the size of the stone more difficult. Stone cutters have thus developed a particular type of cut called the emerald cut, which gives the stone a rectangular or square shape.
4. Sapphire – the cobalt charmer
Not just blue
Pure sapphires are actually white, but the presence of traces of iron and titanium gives them a velvety blue color. Apart from this classic shade, there are rarer sapphires of all colors ranging from green to pink and even black, except the red sapphire which is actually ruby.
Crown jewels
The most famous sapphire in the world is the one formerly owned by the late Princess of Wales Diana and worn today by Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge.

Where Do Precious Gemstones Come From?
We source many precious and semi-precious stones for our jewelry pieces and they come from all over the world.
Tumblr media
Gemstones are defined by the World Jewelry Confederation as “natural inorganic material” and, with the exception of pearls, they come from very specific locations.
Gemstones from Africa
Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique sit on a wealth of gemstones including rubies, sapphires, tanzanite, alexandrite, aquamarine, rhodolite, Tsavorite garnet and tourmaline. Often gemstones reflect their source, for example Tanzanite comes from Tanzania and Tsavorite comes from Kenya’s Tsavo National Park.
Madagascar is the large island off the southeast coast of Africa. It is a leading supplier of sapphires along with aquamarine, quartz, morganite, tourmaline, tsavorite, demantoid garnet and labradorite.
Gemstones from Asia
Myanmar (Burma) produces 90% of the world’s rubies as well as spinel, peridot, garnet, iolite and imperial jade (which is mainly exported to china).
India’s mines produce mainly moonstone, iolite, aquamarine and garnet
Sri Lanka, nicknamed the “Treasure box of the Indian Ocean” is awash with garnet, zircon, tourmaline, beryl, topaz and quartz, particularly around Ratanpura. Many gemstones are found in old riverbeds where they have been washed down and then covered by river deposits; they are only now being discovered.
Gemstones from the Americas
Brazil is home to a spectrum of colourful gemstones including tourmaline, amethyst, topaz, beryl, morganite, aquamarine and quartz. Unfortunately, the mines of Paraiba tourmaline are almost depleted, hence its high value today.
Chile is a top producer of beautiful blue lapis lazuli.
Gemstones from Australia
Australia is the main source of opals which come in an array of colours from white and blue to black, the most fiery and colourful of all.
Gemstones from Europe
Russia has vast mineral reserves including dermatoid garnet and alexandrite.
Exclusive things are exclusive because they are uncommon, unique, and rare. On the same note, Exclusive gemstones are precious because they are only one and rare. So when you plan to buy gemstone, make sure you are buying real ones. Nowadays, there are several options available out there in the market but you should only trust an authentic gemstone dealer. Difference between precious and semi-precious gemstone
Traditionally there are four gemstones that are considered “precious” and these are diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds. Historically, they were deemed precious as they were the rarest, with extraordinary clarity and color, and were therefore the most expensive.
Tumblr media
Semi-precious gemstones must be hard and durable as well as having the characteristics of brilliance, clarity and color. These include stones from the quartz family such as amethyst, citrine, ametrine, rose quartz, topaz and garnets along with turquoise, tanzanite, spinel, alexandrite, peridot and tourmaline. Other precious stones include pearls, moonstones and opals.
The distinction between precious and semi-precious gemstones was only devised in the 19th century, but times have changed and perhaps those classifications are in need of an update! For example, tons of amethyst deposits were discovered in Brazil and Uruguay in the early 19th century and suddenly this “rare” gemstone was not so rare and valuable after all!
Similarly, tons of South African diamonds discovered in 1870 threatened to flood the market and devalue their value, until DeBeers stepped in. This powerful cartel now controls the quality and quantity of diamond production to ensure it remains the most precious gemstone of all.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Exclusive things are exclusive because they are uncommon, unique, and rare.

Rare Gemstones that are more precious than Diamonds
There are many gemstones rarer than diamond. However, few people know what those gems are.
Tumblr media
Nature has bestowed us with a world that is full of infinite colors. From beautiful flowers to mesmerizing rainbow, we have got a variety of colors around us. Continuing the series, we have the world of colorful gemstones to bestow our lives with a pinch of little more shades. There is an endless number of color hues that arise in our ambiance via precious gemstones. Since these owners of natural beauty and emblem of true purity are quite rare, they fetch high monetary value in the international gemstone market. However, the price of a gemstone is never solely determined by its color. There are a number of other factors hat determine the value of a gem, say, cut, clarity, carat weight, and most importantly, the origin.
Check out these stunning gemstones that you wouldn’t have guessed are rarer than diamonds:
Burma Ruby
When we are talking about the most precious stones of the world, Burmese Rubies always ranks at the top of the list. All rubies are rare, but those from Myanmar (formerly Burma) set the standard for quality and color. They are also exceptionally scarce. Popularly known by the name Burma Manik, it is the most cherished variety of the whole wide ruby clan and undoubtedly far more expensive than a piece of diamond. With fine color nicknamed “pigeon blood,” these red gems are always in demand.
Alexandrite
This amazing color-changing gem is one of its unique and rare kinds of gemstone in the whole wide world of gemstones. Alexandrite displays a unique transformation of shades, which makes it an emerald in the morning and a ruby in the evening. This exclusive gem is highly prized and today counted among one of the most sought-after gems because of its remarkable capability of shifting the degree of color, especially the Russian origin. In the sunlight, it becomes bluish-green whereas under incandescent light it demonstrates a purplish-red hue. Alexandrite gemstone is of a much higher price than that of a diamond.
Kashmir Blue Sapphire
When it comes to precious stones you can never forget Kashmir Sapphires. Soft, velvety, saturated blue hues characterize Kashmir sapphires. These rare of the rarest stones are commonly known as Kashmir Neelam. They are highly popular when it comes to premium quality and pricing. However, Kashmir mines are now depleted making Kashmir blue sapphires a pride to own. Henceforth, this natural stunning blue stone keeps the records of the most precious stone.
Ammolite
Occurring in limited deposits in the Rocky Mountains, this gem material is much rarer than diamond. Ammolite is made of the aragonite shells of marine mollusks more than 65 million years old, which display bright, iridescent colors. Any color of the rainbow, or even the entire rainbow, may appear in a single specimen. The value of these unique gems increases for rare colors, more intense iridescence and play of color, and how much the stone can be rotated with the color still visible.
Red Beryl
This rare stone exceeds diamond’s rarity as well as its “fire” or dispersion. Combined with its often sapphire-blue color, it’s no wonder this is a highly sought rare gem.
What are Gemstones?
A gemstone is the name given to a piece of mineral (or other rock or organic material) that after it has been cut and polished has been made into a piece of jewellery or another accessory.
Tumblr media
Gemstones are minerals, rocks, or organic matters that have been chosen for their beauty, durability, and rarity and then cut or faceted and polished to make jewelry or other human adornments. Even though most gemstones are hard, some are too soft or fragile to be used in jewelry, so they are often exhibited in museums and sought by collectors.
Gemstones Formation
Our planet, which was created about 4.5 billion years ago, is comprised of several layers: the Earth's crust, ranging from 3 to 25 miles deep, the mantle and the inner part of Earth known as the core. Most of the gemstones form as minerals under various conditions in the rocks of the Earth’s crust, while just a few of them form in the mantle. The crust is made up of three kinds of rock, known in geology as igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rock. All gemstones are mined in the crust. After they are mined, they usually go to a lapidary, which does the final cleaning. This may involve grinding off the matrix or rock, in which the gemstone was buried, and then cutting or faceting and polishing the gemstones. A gemstone that has been cut and polished is called a gem, or jewel.
Gemstones Color
Gemstones are diverse in their beauty, and many are available in a stunning variety of shades and colors. Most gemstones have little beauty in the rough state, they may look like ordinary rocks or pebbles, but after a skilled cutting and polishing the full color and luster can be seen. Generally, gemstones with clear, medium-tone, intense, and saturated primary colors are most preferred.
Gemstones Clarity
Gemstones are formed below the Earth's surface and can sometimes show traces of other minerals, called inclusions. Inclusions can look like small spots or imperfections within the stone. When viewed through a microscope or a 10x loupe, they can give information about the geological environment in which the mineral was formed and its origin. Inclusions can sometimes identify gemstones and even prove whether the stone is natural or synthetic. Some gemstones, such as emeralds, are more likely to have inclusions. Others, such as aquamarine and topaz, generally have very few inclusions or even none at all.
Gemstones Carat
The weight of the gemstone is measured in carats (5 carats = 1 gram). It's important to recognize that some gems are denser than others. For example, a one-carat ruby (very dense) is going to be smaller than a one-carat emerald (less dense). Also, different types of gems that are similar in size may still differ significantly in value.
Gemstones Cut
The natural beauty of a gem can be enhanced by the way it is cut. There are two basic kinds of gem cuts: cabochon and faceted. The cabochon cut has a smooth rounded top, usually with a flat base, and it is mainly used for opaque or translucent softer gemstones. Cabochons were the only way in which stones were cut until about the 14th century when faceting was developed. Faceting is the process of cutting a gemstone to improve its beauty by making it reflect more light. The faceted cut has many flat cut surfaces (facets) with an overall shape that might be round, oval, square, and more. Only the harder gemstones can be successfully faceted. A gemstone that has been cut and polished is called a gem, or jewel.
Gemstones Species and Varieties
Many types of gemstones belong to groups or species which share a common crystal structure and chemical composition. Some of the most important gemstone species include beryl, corundum, garnet, quartz, and tourmaline. Further, each species may have one or more varieties, which have special coloring or features. For instance, the species corundum includes the varieties ruby and sapphire. However, not every gemstone variety belongs to a group, many are unique varieties that don't share properties with any other kind of gem. For instance, peridot, zircon, topaz, and spinel.
