DITO Home provides free UNLI 5G access to over 30,000 students in Taguig

To help alleviate the digital divide in the public school areas and enable students to leverage the benefits of 5G technology, the country's fastest growing telco provider, DITO Telecommunity, powered Taguig public schools with its fastest broadband internet yet, DITO Home UNLI 5G WiFi. 

Initially, DITO provided free ultra-fast internet connection to six public schools, namely Cipriano P. Sta. Teresa Elementary School, Silangan Elementary School, Taguig Integrated School, Napindan Integrated School, South Daang Hari Elementary School, and Taguig National High School. DITO Home UNLI 5G WIFI were installed in key areas of learning, teaching, and convergence, benefitting over 30,000 students. The project was made possible through the Adopt-A-School Program of Hands On Manila, a non-profit private organization championing volunteerism that contributes to nation-building. 

According to Ms. Joyce Capacillo, Head, Home Business Unit, DITO Telecommunity, this initiative is more than just a technical solution to the students' struggle with limited internet access; it became a source of hope for them to continue pursuing their dreams and aspirations. 

 "We aim to support the education sector by helping provide equitable access to the internet. We recognize that lack of internet connectivity not only limits students' access to educational resources but also hinders their ability to navigate and fully engage in a digital environment, a skill that is crucial for their future, "Capacillo said. 

"We've heard stories of students having a hard time securing their own mobile data  just to complete their school requirements and online exams. Such stories opened our eyes to the daily hardships that young minds face every day, and here at DITO, our hope is to somehow alleviate this burden and that no student gets left behind," she added. 

Joining DITO in celebrating the program launch were leaders and representatives from the participating public schools and Taguig local government including Dr. Flordelyn Umagat, Principal, Silangan Elementary School, Ms. Annette Cristobal Principal, Cipriano P. Sta. Teresa Elementary School , Dr. Francia Patron Principal, Napindan Integrated School, Ms. Kathryn Raymundo, HOM School Coordinator, Taguig National High School, Dr. Joselito Mataac, Principal, Taguig Integrated School, and Ms. Marieta Junio, Principal, South Daang Hari Elementary School.

According to Mr. Joselito Mataac, Teacher 1 from Taguig Integrated School, "DITO's 5G technology will surely empower our students to level up their skills and talents."

DITO Home initially started with Taguig City, but this initiative would definitely expand to other cities with high hopes of providing an inclusive and empowering internet experience for all.

"We are happy to collaborate with education and community stakeholders to power up public schools. We want to send that message out na Welcome Lahat DITO. There is much value in joining efforts to strengthen connectivity in public schools because that also means connecting students to a brighter and more promising future," Capacillo concluded.

Globe Turns Over P14M in Cash Donation to PGH for Purchase of Medical Supplies and Personal Protective Equipment

Globe successfully raised and turned over P14M to the PGH Medical Foundation, Inc. (PGH-MFI). The amount was gathered through the joint efforts of loyal Globe customers who donated over P9M via their Rewards points, and the company’s initial pledge of P5M in cash donation.  

This is part of the telco’s comprehensive efforts in providing immediate aid to medical frontliners at PGH, which is now a designated exclusive COVID-19 hospital by the Department of Health (DOH). The funds were utilized by PGH-MFI to purchase much-needed test kits, alcohol, and complete sets of personal protective equipment (PPEs) such as surgical masks, face shields, and surgical gowns. Globe also turned over 50 mobile phones preloaded with unlimited calls and texts to all networks valid for 30 days to serve the communication needs of healthcare workers and frontliners at PGH. 

“We are overwhelmed with gratitude to all customers who stand together with us in our ongoing fight against the pandemic,” said Ernest Cu, President and CEO at Globe. “We also hope that this can show our kababayans that in times like these, doing simple acts of kindness even within the safety of our homes can truly make a difference.” 

Last March 5, Globe also donated P5M worth of surgical masks to the Philippine Red Cross. Further, it has provided free unli internet connection via its GoWiFi services since March 13 to 68 public and private hospitals across the country. Mobile and broadband customers are also encouraged to stay updated on the developments on COVID-19 with access to the official sites of DOH, NDRRMC and PIA free of data charges.

Team Out of Town Blog Hub (www.outoftownblog.com) – Philippine 5G pioneer and leader Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) remains the country’s fastest 5G network in the previous quarter with a median download speed that is “nearly twice as fast” as its competitor, according to the latest report by Ookla, the global leader in broadband network intelligence.

In its Speedtest Global Index Market and Analyses covering Q3 2021, Ookla reported that Smart had a median 5G download speed at 217.03 Mbps, which is faster than that of Globe’s 114.12 Mbps.

Smart 5G is nearly twice the speed of competitor

Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index also identified the mobile operators with the fastest 5G download speeds in selected markets, including United States’ T-Mobile with 135.17 Mbps; Hong Kong’s China Mobile with 191.95 Mbps; Germany’s Telekom with 161.14 Mbps; and Canada’s Bell at 183.39 Mbps.

Also posting much faster median 5G download speeds were Singapore’s Singtel with 248.45 Mbps; Finland’s Telia with 283.34 Mbps; China’s China Telecom with 304.03 Mbps; Spain’s Vodafone with 323.14 Mbps; New Zealand’s Vodafone at 326.44 Mbps; Qatar’s Ooredoo with 373.98 Mbps; and Taiwan’s Chunghwa Telecom with 440.93 Mbps.

World-class customer experience

“Ookla’s latest report underscores the steady progress we’ve made in rolling out 5G and providing our subscribers with a world-class customer experience in terms of speed and coverage,” said Jane J. Basas, SVP and Head of Consumer Wireless Business at Smart.

“This inspires us to continue with our network rollout and improvement efforts, as well as stay ahead of our subscribers’ needs by offering innovative products and services,” she added.

Smart now has around 800,000 5G users on its network, which is a 200% increase from the number of Smart 5G users in December 2020.

To date, Smart has also fired up over 4,400 5G sites in more than 4,000 locations for the Philippines’ widest 5G coverage.

Top Speed Score and Latency

Aside from leading in terms of 5G performance, Smart also retained its distinction as the fastest mobile operator in the Philippines with a Speed Score

of 59.71, which is way ahead of Globe’s 28.38 and DITO’s 25.34. Speed Score incorporates a measure of each provider’s download and upload speed to rank network performance

Moreover, Smart had the lowest median latency, which means it had the most responsive connection essential for activities such as streaming and gaming. Smart posted a median latency of 20 milliseconds (ms), faster than DITO’s 24 ms and Globe’s 25 ms.
