Last I heard from my friend before the government oh so graciously turned off the network and wifi in the entire fucking country (im panicking i can't reach anyone god protecct them) the death toll had risen to 19. Children from class 9 and 10 were shot dead. I can't fucking do this anymore. I am so terrified for everyone I love. The people who died could have been someone I know. How am I supposed to live knowing that.
Eyes on Bangladesh please. The quota movement is being met with tear gas, rubber bullets and actual bullets. A lot of the students are underaged too. Six students are confirmed to be dead till now. The governments take on it absolute madness. They have let loose the their rabid dog which is called "Chhatro League or Student league" on ordinary students. The government is a joke. They want us silent.

i don't know if any of you know what's happening in bangladesh right now, but please educate yourselves. i don't know if my family there is even fucking alive.
the university students were protesting because the prime minister went back on her promise and reintroduced a quota that many view as unfair, because it allows students who have lower merit than others applying to beat out their fellow applicants, based on their heritage.
the prime minister insulted the protesters, then the protesters were protesting against her, then the police got involved and people were killed and injured. the government then shut down the internet and the country is in blackout.
over a hundred people have died by now, and even more are injured.

can you direct to resources that go into detail about the quota system and its flaws ? (from a non-bangladeshi)
THIS is the link to a Facebook post that goes into the details. The video gets informative around 45 seconds from the start, but I would recommend watching the entire video (5 minutes and 35 seconds) to understand the gravity of the situation.
This covers the situation pretty well, but if I am able to find anything more informative, I will also post that.

Hey, guys. Sorry if I don't explain things well. I usually just read fanfictions on tumblr. Never thought I'll ever have to post here. But I have come here today for my country and fellow Bangladeshi students.
I am currently hospitilized. I got sprayed with tear gas thrown by the cops. My skin feels like falling off and my nostrils burn like hell. Every breath I take comes with agony. However, that issue is miniscule because my country might fall into a civil war and I urge you to spread the word. I was hoping you could help us reach an international audience cuz our media is monopolised by the corrupt state.
Our corrupt government has unleashed their goons and policemen to brutalise our peaceful student protesters. Numerous are injured and many have lost their lives.
Context: public jobs and admission in public universities are highly coveted and respected in Bangladesh. Therefore, students study for year to get a place in these public sectors. Bangladesh was liberated in 1971 and the freedom fighters were granted reserved seats in all important sectors and educational institution. Which made sense at that time, because the fighters took a hard hit during the war and they needed help from the government to get back on their feet. However, 50 years later, their descendants still have access to these seats and it's taking away chances from hardworking talented individuals. 56% of the seats are reserved. Most workers in ministries and parliament are freedom fighters. If not, they are sons and daughters of a freedom fighter. What I'm trying to say is that, they no longer need these reserved seats. The amount of wealth and stability they have is something an average Bangladeshi could only ever dream of. Unless your grandad went to war 50 years ago, you could not even dream to touch it. This is unfair to the unemployed talented youth of Bangladesh.
We started a peaceful protest. However, we are being brutalised for speaking out against this unfair system. All the universities and other educational institution in Bangladesh have pretty much declared war against the government. However, our local medias are useless because they are heavily monitored by the government. Please help us and spread our news.
Student dorms are being bombed and raided. They are being shot at with bullets, granades and tear gas. 6 young men already lost their lives. Thousands are injured.
You can understand our situation better from this yt video

My friend (the one in dhaka, in the heart of protest) texted me just now. His exact words were, "I Feel like crying." "I think I'll throw up." Do you know what he saw? A RAB (Rapid Action Battalion) officer, (this squad is known for its brutality), drove a car over a student. The student died. Immediately. Do you know what happened next? The other students who were protesting, enraged and upset by this, in the heat of the moment, took sticks and rocks and brutalized the man to death. In side the car. The driver didn't even have a chance to get out of the car. He was poked by woodsticks and thrown heavy rocks at, his face disfigured in a moment. I wasn't there. But he sent me a video. "I'm so sorry for showing you this, but I don't know how else to explain to you. You need to see what I saw." And I watched. And then I threw up. And I watched again. In the footage, all the kids were obviously students, some even wearing uniforms. their hands were stained with blood. They kept hitting the man over and over and over. In the background, someone was screaming, "Guys stop, he's going to die!" They did not stop. They killed him. They killed a man. I wonder if they will forget this memory in their life. Watching someone die and then murdering someone with their own hands. I've only watched a video and I'm traumatized. I wonder what it was for people who were there. Not even out of school and they watched someone die. Not even out of school and they killed someone. Not even out of school, they will be traumatized for life. Today, if they manage to go home safely, they will able to rest and calm down. And as they wash their hands off blood, it will finally hit them. What they've seen and what they've done. Stop this. Please. Every 5 minutes, I'm texting my friends at Dhaka. Asking, "Are you okay?" When I really mean, "Are you alive?" Stop this. Enough. This is enough. Enough people dead. Our government is cruel. They refuse to acknowledge the martyrs. Instead they're sending police and RAB and BGB and Chatra League to kill us. Tell me, where do we go when police murders? Please help us. Right now our only chance is if the rest of the world gets involved. Please, reblog. Share. Talk about it. Let the world know. Let the world know that our government is massacaring our students. Save lives. I don't want to see one more mother crying beside the body of their children.

While our sisters & brothers fought all night for the freedom of their campus from the imbecile ChatraLeague, but all eyes should be on Dhaka University & Jahangir Nagar University. Battalion of RAB & BGB are present with heavy armour, alongside protecting those imbeciles and pointing guns towards our mates.

127 dead, my heart is in pain for my people back home. I still can’t hear from my cousins because they’re trying so hard to suppress that shit.
