Artist Research (5/8): Joe Fig- Inside the Painter’s Studio
Joe Fig was born in 1968, in Seaford, New York. Located in Florida, Fig has produced various works encompassing painting, sculpture, photography, and drawing. Joe Fig received his BFA and MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York City, leading to many publications and works soon after. His work examines the role of the artist, the creative process, and the self-made universe of the artist's studio. Much of Fig’s work has been exhibited in different museums, including Parrish Art Museum, Toledo Museum of Art, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Norton Museum of Art, Hood Museum of Art, and many more. Not to mention, many institutions hold his work including the Art Museum at Harvard University. Joe Fig also authorizes two critically acclaimed books, Inside the Artist's Studio (2015) and Inside the Painter's Studio (2009).
Much of Joe Fig’s work is of mixed media. He sculpts his work and photographs it. He also photographs his prints and paintings. While this work is based on his sculptures, Fig manages to use photography to tell a story with his sculptures using perspective and angles to portray meaning. In Inside the Painter’s Studio, Fig aims to portray the real day-to-day activities of several well-known contemporary artists. This shows the mundane but meticulous process for artists, especially with their more well-known pieces. The pieces discussed in this blog will be Pollock #1, Pollock 1950 #2, and Self Portrait 2007. These pieces are either digital print or c-print photography.
Pollock (Jackson Pollock 1950) #1 Pollock 1950 # 2
The first two pieces are Pollock #1 and Pollock 1950 #2. I decided to discuss these two pieces together as they pertain to my idea that Fig photographed his sculptures for a reason. As the viewer can see, Joe Fig positions his camera in different perspectives to show a new point of view. When comparing the two pieces, audiences can see a whole new piece to the sculpture that was not visible in Pollock #1. In Pollock #1, the audience can see Pollock creating one of his famous abstract action paintings. His floor is covered in paint and so is he. There are paint buckets everywhere, and he looks down at his work, almost judging it. Then in Pollock #2, viewers get a different perspective, one being Pollock inside his home. He is in the same position; however, now the viewer can see him through the door of his simple home, which looks similar to the sculpture. This almost gives a new idea of the plain and simple home covering the messy and colorful work of Pollock inside.
Self Portrait 2007
The next piece I am discussing is Self Portrait 2007, which is a very interesting piece. It shows Joe Fig sitting at his desk. It almost looks like he is staring at a mirror since his face is in full view by the reflection. His studio is filled with all the media he uses, including his paints, photos, and his next sculpture. The sculpture is of a white house, which when looking at his works, could be the house for one of his other sculptures or his own. If I had to guess which artist's studio the sculpture could be, it would be Barnett Newman or Joe Fig himself. Throughout his work, Fig sculpts the artist in a still manner, staring at their work, and showing the slower meticulous part of being an artist. He shows this in his self-portrait where, even though he is surrounded by all this art and materials, he sits by his desk staring at something. It shows the slow process of making art and how these individuals take time to make a piece.
Joe Fig’s work was very interesting to see. I enjoyed looking through all his pieces and admiring the small details of the pieces he has worked on. Even with the studios and homes themselves, Joe Fig was able to replicate them well. I liked how Fig portrayed to artist’s creative process in this boring and slow still that paints the creative process in a mundane light. It gives the viewer the idea of how these beautiful pieces are made in long and meticulous processes that should be admired. I recommend anyone to see his pieces and take the time to study the smaller details Fig took the time to make.

Research Post 1
A photographer who caught my eye immediately was Marcus DeSieno. His “Surveillance Landscapes” project is incredible. The high contrast in the black and white heavy grain looks majestic.
Originally from New York, he has received a degree in documentary photography and studies from the Salt Institute in 2008 and his Bachelor of Arts from Marlboro College, where he focused on Photography in 2010. He went on to complete his Masters in Fine Arts in Studio Art at the University of Southern Florida in 2015.
Now in 2024 he has had many expositions and is seen as a very well known photographer.
I really enjoy DeSieno’s style of photography, it fits with my own vibe I try to go for. His other works from “Geography of Disappearance” are incredible. The grain and brown color grading and high contrast is so beautiful. The imagery and geography details and areas are so cool.
I love his photo “Unknown Migrant, Male, COD Undetermined, Their Body Was Found More Than 6 Months After Death” because
1. The name tells you the significance and background and meaning behind the picture
2. The imagery of the tomb and cross with said vibe he goes for is so eerie and creepy and unsettling, something out of a Rob Zombie movie and I love it
Overall DeSieno is an amazing photographer and storyteller and I hope to see more photos from him.
