Lessons In Our History
There is no peculiar merit in ancient things, but there is merit in integrity, and integrity entails the keeping together of the parts of any whole, and if these parts are scattered throughout time, then the maintenance of integrity entails a knowledge, a memory, of ancient things. …. To think, feel or act as though the past is done with, is equivalent to believing that a railway station through which our train has just passed, only existed for as long as our train was in it. (Edward Hyams, Chapter 7, The Gifts of Interpretation)
First, I think that it is important to acknowledge that not everyone is going to interpret this quote in the same was as we all have different pasts, privileges (invisible backpacks), and knowledge bases that are our toolkits of how we all will interpret this quote. Interpreters also will perhaps use this quote to get people thinking and talking about what this means to their audience and might reveal a theme message for the audience.
Starting with the first sentence, merit means to have the quality of being good or worthy. There is good/worth in integrity (keeping together parts of any whole)-telling the whole story without leaving parts out. I feel that a lot of people take parts of history, little snippets, and use them to achieve a goal. It is important for interpreters to not do this but to share the whole story.
This reminds me of a photo I’ve seen before where from up close you think you know what is happening but then it zooms out and something else is happening. Therefore, looking at the whole picture can teach us a lot more about the past than a snippet does.
Photo Found at: https://thecircular.org/media-depiction-of-major-events-in-society/
I feel as though the media writes stories that viewers want to see, but also snips findings into pieces that often skew the story in an untrue direction. For example, the headline “scientists remain puzzled by mass of dead birds along West Coast”, they imply that humans are doing something wrong while, in reality, scientists concluded that natural overpopulation was the most probable explanation which is a natural response (Hays, 2015). Conservation can be difficult with inexact media twisting science so one way that interpreters can help is by sharing the whole story!
The analogy to think, feel, or act as though the past is done with to the train in the train station tells us that we should not ignore the past but instead be influenced by and learn from the past. There are so many lessons in history, from discrimination, atrocities, and ethnic conflicts (326). These lessons we can learn from the past can promote better understanding of present challenges that can help people navigate these challenges (343), and help people learn and comprehend the factors that make an atrocity possible so people can prevent it from being repeated in the future, and to cultivate peace (327). Interpreters can help people see how history relates to their own lives by teaching them in exciting educational stories (326).
How does history relate to nature interpretation. This is a question I wondered as well… The textbook said that nature often occurs in nature and vice versa. One can have learning about history draw them to nature or have nature draw them to learn about the surrounding history through interpreters. It also was suggested taking about nature through history to see that changes we have made. Conservation efforts and interpreters with a conservation goal /theme could reveal how much humans have changed the landscape and contrast the past and present as we see declines in biodiversity. This could be due to some species’ inability to move at these high rates of change and thus may gradually die out as climatic conditions become increasingly unsuitable (Malcom & Pitelka, 2001).

Unit 6 Reflective Journal - Lim Lin Year 2 Production Arts for Screen
For our first unit in the second year, we were tasked to created a 3d environment through three randomly selected prompts. My prompt was an Interior Design Shop in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1989.
As shown in the slide, there is a significant influence of European architecture in Buenos Aires, especially French architecture. After looking into the different architecture styles seen in the city, I began researching on places that create distinct visual identities for the city.
I first looked into local markets and shopping districts as they are the spots popular among tourists. While the items range from handmade local crafts to international brands, a common feature of these stores is the presence of European architecture in these places.
Unique locations and symbols are also strong indicators of the city which I could use. Caminito is a street that became a tourist attraction due to its vibrant and saturated colours. While this is eye-catching and is an obvious indicator of the location, I chose not to use this street since it will cause the final product to look too sterotypical.
Jacaranda trees are also appealing due to its unusual colour compared to other plants that grow at the side of roads and pathways. As such, I would try to incorporate this visual indicator of Buenos Aires into the scene.
I then looked into trends and movements in the 1980s which I could implement into the design. Bright and saturated colours are prevalent in both fashion and design, one of which included the Memphis group.
A unique feature of the 80s are also neon light installations. Neon lights Made a resurgence in the 1980s. Today, places such as malls would appear dated if strips neon or LED lights are present.
I also did some research into alternative styles in the same time period that greatly contrasts the bright neon aesthetics more commonly associated with the 1980s.
As this is a very tumultuous time period of Argentinians in the 1980s, I would focus largely on how the impact of the economic crisis greatly differs between individuals of different social statuses. The context of 1980s Argentina could be used to create a narrative based on a character owning a retail store during an economic crisis, when the middle class have significantly less purchasing power so sales could be made.
I looked into retail storefronts as they are an iconic feature of 80s malls, it can also be used to design signage and create colour palette for the scene.
Interior design magazines can be used to to indicate time period and trade. It can also be used as image textures for the environment.
Display racks and furniture create the look of an interior design shop, selecting items that follow the 80s design trend. Brass floor lamps such as the one pictured are expensive, this also shows that this store is selling items only the rich are willing and able to buy. Peace lilies are a popular house plant in the 1980s due to its feature in NASA's Clean Air Study, so I would also include this in my design. As columns were a significant design feature in the 80s, I wanted to add a vintage item that has similar textures and shape, so I added a plaster lamp.
The other furniture for display will be used from the ones shown in the previous slide.
For modelling, I looked into how sci-fi vehicles in animation were designed. Most of which have close proportions to their real life counterpart, however they would have smoother and more curved finishing and reduced details for easier animation.
Although most 80s animation aesthetics that are remembered today feature a dark night sky and city illumination, this strayed far from the warm colours of Buenos Aires. As such, I leaned more into warmer environments like the screencaps in Robot Carnival and The Little Mermaid.
I also did some research on early 80s animations such as early Looney Tunes cartoons, however the minimalistic and simplified style inspired by art deco motifs did not suit the direction I was going for.
I then began designing using the new idea of an interior design shop owner travelling around the city using a camper van.
(Top left to bottom right)
1971 MERCEDES-BENZ T2 L508DG Camper-van: Nice shape and colour, but looks too close to 70s retro aesthetics
1969 MB LO1112 Colectivo: A strong visual indication of Buenos Aires, but clashes with my storyline and colours are too bold
1980 Mercedes Benz 508 D Motorhome: Made close to time period and large enough to practically serve the function as an interior design shop, but not visually interesting
Ex-Police Special Forces Mercedes T2 Camper: The van that gave me the idea of making a store from the outside of a vehicle, however the shape isn’t interesting and the small size makes the functionality hard to believe
The first block out was made using a single mesh, which I then regret because it became very difficult to create loop cuts or use the Boolean modifier. Fortunately, I was still able to use its shape as a guide when redoing the model with separated parts.
As the style I was going for (late 80s sci-fi animation) has relatively normal proportions and simplified details, I did the same for the van as small details were removed, to make the scene less realistic and to save time for this unit.
This also allowed me to use the furniture and display racks I found during research as reference images for the items that will be displayed in the store.
For the store layout, I designed it while modelling as blocking out the areas to place display items while adjusting the camera view gave me more control with the scene composition.
A metallic chrome shader was made using a YouTube tutorial to create "80s Chrome" text. As the intent of the shader was not for large objects, I still had to make many changes for the effect to work on metallic parts of the can. I also recoloured the material for brass objects to create a glossy and clean appearance.
After experimenting with various painterly shaders, I realised painting by hand using texture paint gives a more desired effect since I can control the brushstrokes better and only work on the camera view. I also painted over some images that looked too realistic such as the cardboard boxes. I also drew thes Argentinian austral on price tags to provide context of the hyperinflation and economic crisis in late 1980s
Since this assignment did not require animation, I use the opportunity to draw the foliage on jacaranda trees on Photoshop and added the drawings as planes parallel to the camera view. To create more depth in the trees, I overlapped the images over one another.
For finishing touches, I added a glare node in compositing to recreate the blurry lights seen in vintage photos.
Overall, I was glad I could execute most ideas I had in mind for this project within four weeks and was able to learn how to use the texture paint tool instead of relying on nodes. After completing this unit, I felt that with more time I could push the hand drawn style further with more textured painting.

Luddism
Haraway, Suchman and Verran decry the universalist pretensions of Western science. They argue there is no objective truth, only subjective interpretations. The “unmarked bodies” have a monopoly on truth, and the “marked bodies” truths are discredited as a result of this. This got me to thinking about historic examples of discrediting or shutting down ideas and opinions.
The Luddites were misunderstood. We use luddite to describe someone has technically inept. The term shuts down debate. “You’re a luddite so you aren’t allowed an opinion”. Much like Haraway’s “marked bodies” a partial perspective was not a valid perspective.
In fact… the Luddites were not actually technophobes. They were a social movement of British artisans in the 19th century who organised in opposition to technological advances in the textile industry. Started in Nottingham in 1811 and spread to the West Riding of Yorkshire by 1812, and Lancashire shortly after. They helped shape Manchester’s helped inspire Manchester’s radical political identity (my home town).
The Luddites confined their attacks to manufacturers who used machines in what they called “a fraudulent and deceitful manner” to get around standard labor practices. “They just wanted machines that made high-quality goods, and they wanted these machines to be run by workers who had gone through an apprenticeship and got paid decent wages. Those were their only concerns.

Unit 6, Post 1
Interpersonal attraction is liking someone. Online dating uses the principle of similarity attraction (liking someone because they are similar to you) to succeed. Algorithms narrow down vast pools of people so that the people you match with are similar to you and you are more likely to like them.

Black Mirror - The Entire History of You
A) What are some similarities between the technology of the grain and technology that we already have and use?
The grain allowed users to store personal memories and accounts from their entire life up until the very present moment. Users can then share and replay these memories with others via screens. From a very general standpoint, the grain sounds like a form of technology we have now: video recorders. Taking just our phones and the video cameras they come equipped with as an example, we can see many similarities with this technology and the grain. The grain stores everything in a cloud, and organizes it via dates, people, locations, etc. We can see this parallel with something like Apple’s iCloud or Google Photos. Both services have cloud storage, and allow to store an abundant amount of memories and moments. Both platforms additionally allow organization of these moments by date, location, and even by the faces of the people captured in this pictures or videos you are storing. Additionally, as stated before, the grain utilizes special screens for users to share their memories with the people around them. This is so starkly similar to how we share things via Facebook, or Instagram. And if you want to get even more rudimentary, this is just like uploading your pictures and videos to a computer, and showing people view the screen or desktop. Minus the fact that the grain is surgically inserted in the heads of the user, we are very close that technology with what we have now. And who’s to say we won’t get to something like the grain in the next few years?
B) Do you think human relationships would benefit from having a technology like the grain?
I do not thing a something like the grain will really help human relationships. It takes away too many aspects that make our interactions with each other mean something. It takes way the human part of human relationships. First and foremost, humans are meant to forget. Lingering on to past memories and moments will constantly keep our minds in the past, both literally and figuratively. We will slowly appreciate less of our present as we constantly watch the past over and over again. This can be seen as the two characters in this episode make love one night. What we think first is a night of passion just turns out to be the two of them watching a previous night on their grains. How soiled is their relationship in that instance? Each individual could not show compassion to the other directly in the present, but needed to be watch a moment of the past to feel some type of anything. Additionally, sharing explicit memories with such detail such as a first person account will ruin the sense of privacy and personal attachment. Somethings are meant to be locked in to our brains. The grain keeps people’s minds locked and connected in a way that is not human and dilutes what it means to be human and have human relationships.

These are photographs from my work during the 3D controlled assessment. Based on different words, we would manipulate our fabric to correspond to it. An example of this is the word ruffles, which I shown in the first image. another is fold, which is in the bottom middle and top right images. Our last two pieces were a combination of techniques which we thought were successful for us, one of my final pieces is shown in the top middle photograph. During this assessment, I got to explore different fabric weights and how they work best for specific things, and how to manipulate fabrics to relate to the words we were given.

Labour Party Conference
I attended Labour conference this year. The labour movement developed in response to the depredations of industrial capitalism. The movement undoubtably owes a lot to early protest movements such as Luddism. The whole experience was incredibly inspiring. I was disappointed to hear the common misinterpretation of ‘Luddite’ used by one of the speakers - which shows how misunderstood the Luddites are.

Interpersonal aggression is the principle of acting aggressive or cruel towards others. This might underlie online bullying and trolling because people act aggressively to fulfill their own sadistic pleasures. The anonymity of the internet might aid this because they don’t feel like they will recieve any repercussions.

Studio Mazaar
Initial logo experiments. This shows the use of the full colour palette has too many visual connotations of the 70s era and isn’t in keeping with the attributes of the brand studio mazaar. The design of repetition is also very symbolic of the 70s era so I moved on from this.

Unit 6 Task 1c
Riverdale (2017)
Select a film, TV programme or game of your choice, gather some quantitative research (statistical data, target audience). Afterwards, then you need to gather some qualitative (primary) data and present your findings via ‘Unit 6 Task 1c.’
Riverdale is a ‘teen drama’ aimed at teenagers/young adults. The show also contains elements of crime and mystery and adolescent nonsense (a.k.a. forced romance). Riverdale has a typical overall viewership of above 1.5 million per episode according to the statistics available on Wikipedia. The most viewed episode reached 2.38 million and the least viewed episode reached 1.48 million viewers to date.
IMDB Reviews
“This show is Dawson's Creek meets Scream Queens meets every other High School drama that ever existed, it's as if someone decided to take every single clichéd teenage character out there and put it together in a story about a small town murder.”
“The story line is intriguing, and the dialogue is a little better than some other CW shows. However the show does exhibit a fair amount of clinches and a sense of predictability. All in all, Riverdale seems promising and I'm definitely looking forward to the next episode!”
“Riverdale was suddenly layered and mysterious, yet still filled with characters you knew from Archie and Betty, to Pops and the Pussycats. These were people you could identify with with actual personalities beyond the pulp four color comic book world you remember them from. And they were eyeball deep in a mystery that had real consequences. And we got to learn about not just the "gang", but also their parents and some periphery characters that were rarely touched on in the comics. And best of all, the goofy sidekick Jughead is a much more interesting character and the narrator of the series showing him to be an intelligent person far beyond the hamburger munching cartoon of a character he is in the books. I have just finished the season finale and look forward to the next season. It far exceeded my expectations.”
Riverdale has been criticised for its character tropes, predictability and for not being true to the original comic books. However, it has also received praise for being fast-paced and intriguing, ultimately appealing more to new fans of the series.
You then need to gather some qualitative (primary) data and present your findings via a tumblr post ‘Unit 6 Task 1c.’
YOU MUST DISCUSS THE ‘PROS AND CONS’ OF METHODS USED (Unit 6 Task 1d).
WHAT METHOD PROVED TO BE THE MOST USEFUL? LIKEWISE WHAT METHOD PROVED INEFFECTIVE???
WHAT WOULD YOU DO DIFFERENTLY NEXT TIME?
Why Sam Watches Riverdale
For my primary research, I asked my classmate Sam some questions which he ignored, and instead proceeded to give me his various thoughts about the show.
“Interesting mystery - Audience interaction as they try to work it out as well as the main characters. Great characters, well acted with good development as the plot goes on. Atmosphere - Dark teen mystery thriller with some hidden levels of camp and melodrama.”
Sam agrees with the general opinion that the show is often clichéd and its characters embody teenage stereotypes to the extent that it can be quite campy at times, however, he enjoys both the characters and atmosphere in spite of this, as well as the show’s murder mystery aspect. Sam enjoys speculating about the identity of the masked shooter and observing the gradual changes in characters, such as their thoughts and motives, as the story progresses.
Sam made an interesting comment about the overzealous fan culture surrounding the show. In summer 2017, the actress Vanessa Morgan revealed that she had received death threats over the show, despite having yet to appear on it. This is due to hints that her character of Toni Topaz could come to threaten the relationship between show regulars Betty and Judghead, whose romance is highly popular amongst fans.
Unit 6 Task 1d
The secondary and primary methods used to gather qualitative data - IMDB user reviews and a personal interview - proved equally as effective, because rather than having a concentrated focus on a topic of my choosing, both styles of research developed into sessions of having a Riverdale viewer tell me exactly what was on their mind, as if I were a cult TV therapist or something like that. As useful as this was, I should probably try to have more control over future interview conductions. My professionalism is clearly lacking. I’m just fortunate that the subject of my interview was an intellectual type, capable of compelling conversation and guilty of living vicariously through television, or else I would be in something of a predicament. Thanks Sam.
