Anberlin – Silverline
It feels great to have Anberlin back in the music fold. The band seemed very comfortable walking away from the music scene after the release of their last (and at the time, final) album called Lowborn and an accompanying farewell tour, yet fast forwarding to the band’s reconciliation in 2018, where Anberlin would perform several concerts and then in May of 2020, the band announced they would be working on some new music once again. Add in a few livestream concerts during the pandemic, and Anberlin regained their band chemistry and appear to be re-invigorated in the path that lies before them. This passion was felt first-hand in lead vocalist Stephen Christian when I interviewed him about Silverline. Hearing Christian’s take on how these songs came together with producers Tim McTague (Underoath), Chad Carouthers, and JJ Revell only brings further context to the rich tunes that came together on this EP. The set kicks off on the right foot with the blistering guitar approach on “Two Graves,” which I’m very happy they chose to put on this record, rather than a one-off single, since it logically fits as a re-introduction to the sound Anberlin were going for. Christian’s powerful vocals on the chorus of, “No down from zero / Don’t you ever count me out / Ever, ever, ever count me out / Of idols and heroes / Soon you’ll never go without / So follow, follow, follow, follow me out,” cut through the fog of guitars to guide the listener through the heavier-tinged material. Anberlin continues to experiment with heavier guitar tones on “Nothing Lost,” where Joey Milligan and Christian McAlhaney’s riffing takes center stage. Not to be outshined, drummer Nate Young really showcases his brilliance as percussionist with some great fills that are at times paired with programmed beats. ”Body Language” and “Asking” sound similar to the electronica-flavored elements Anberlin were going for on Vital and Lowborn, with even better results than before. Stephen Christian’s breathy vocals on “Body Language” are very dream pop-esque while bassist Deon Rexroat contributes some great lines here into the mix. On “Asking,” we get where the Silverline meaning came from as Stephen Christian mentions in the bridge, “I want to be the savior to your complex mind / I want to be the quiet in storms, I Silverline.” The lyrical material, in particular, on this EP is incredibly well thought out, with no real wasted momentum to be found in the approach to songwriting. Everything reaches its boiling point on “Circles,” a song that sounds like what Anberlin would create if they listened to nothing but The Cure for weeks on end to create something that moves the needle in the right direction. It’s a great choice of a second single on Silverline as it has everything you’ve come to expect from the beauty of this band. Overall, this EP is a great way of getting Anberlin re-focused on creating new music together, which is what the fans wanted all along as the band celebrated different record anniversaries in their storied discography. Hopefully the subtle hints on social media by Anberlin mentioning that there may be “more to come,” in this chapter of their musical journey may mean their is more to tell in this part of their collective careers together. --- Please consider becoming a member so we can keep bringing you stories like this one. ◎ https://chorus.fm/reviews/anberlin-silverline/

A Personal Rant brought to you by Underoath
For many years my only comfort in trying times has been music. Specifically, metal music. I’ve gone through most of the major genres and have found my favorite sound from most of them. One band that has always stood out for me has been Underoath.
I can definitively say that Underoath is my favorite band of all time, let me explain why. Middle school in America isn’t easy for anyone, but for some of us with sever money problems it can get even worse. In middle school my family was completely broke, I had to be pulled out of my private Christian school because of some other problems that I was having in my personal life. I was homeschooling and super isolated, but I needed time to heal from everything that had happened in the previous year. I found this radio station called Power FM. It was a Christian Rock station that played some other artists that I really liked. One day I was idly listening and this man’s voice came on over the speaker and I was immediately fixated on it. It was Aaron Gillespie in his band The Almost singing a derivative of “Amazing Grace”. I went and looked up more of his music and ended up finding Underoath, but I wasn’t sold on them yet. They were super heavy compared to what I was used too, and in all honesty, they scared me.
Fast forward three years and I had purchased most of their albums, knew 90% of their catalog and was exploring other bands that sounded like them. I tried to go and see them on tour but didn’t have the money at the time. In 2010 they announced that they were going on a farewell tour and I missed the ticket deadline for the show closest to me. My mother ended up driving me 4 hours to a show for one night so that I could see my favorite band on stage before they disappeared forever.
Luckily for me this wasn’t the end, four years later the band got back together and did a come-back tour. I got tickets for this show and got to see them for the second time! It was one of the best shows I had ever seen, even if I was stuck in the back of the crowd with all the guys smoking. I’m sure I got a second hand high but it doesn’t even matter. Their songs that had always meant something to me meant even more once I heard them live. I didn’t matter to me that I was in the crowd alone, it didn’t matter that my date had left me or my best friend couldn’t make it, all that matter was that I was in a crowd with a bunch of other people who also enjoyed the same music. The third time I got to see them, my mom went with me again, I got to see another amazing performance before them, and I walked away happier knowing that very soon I would be visiting the school of dreams in two days.
A year later I’m at the school of my dreams, only its more like a nightmare. I’ve been on my own completely for a year and I am drowning in all the responsibilities I’m supposed to be taking care of. Yet again, my favorite band has come back to help me. Underoath released the new single, announced a new American tour, and will be putting out a new album this April. I was so stressed the week they released their new song that I was crying almost every day. I finally just put their new song “On My Teeth” on repeat and I finally felt better. My mood lightened up just a bit and I could see some good things that were happening in my life, but today, sitting in class, I’m still drowning. There isn’t time for me to work, sleep, and commute to work and school. This school isn’t a dream or a blessing, it is just a thing. An expensive thing that will always look good on paper, but that’s all it is. I don’t need good papers to do what I want to do, I just need time and practice. I will get to do what I love to do. I just have to find the path that I am meant to be on.

What do you get when you put two Florida bands together for four nights? An amazing 4 days of music and concerts you will never forget. That was exactly what happened during Thanksgiving week when A Day To Remember and Underoath took over a sold-out House of Blues Orlando in Lake Buena Vista FL for The Degenerates Tour. A sold-out show at House of Blues Orlando is always an amazing experience. The energy from the fans, the talk of excitement, and the singing along to the songs line by line. There’s nothing greater than attending a show with hardcore fans. And it’s exactly what we had on Friday, November 30th.
First up was the special guest from Tampa, FL Underoath. The band formed back in 1997 and released their first album Act of Depression in 1999 and immediately gathered a strong fan base. Their high energy performances and music gathered the masses to their shows that helped support an additional 6 more albums with two of those certified as Gold. But, in 2012 Underoath announced they would be hanging it up and went on a farewell tour. In January 2013 the band played their final show at Jannus Live in St. Petersburg, FL. Fortunately for their fans, the band announced their reunion in 2015 and in 2018 released their 8th studio album Erase Me. It was their first studio album in 8 years and was a huge success peaking at #1 on the Billboard Top Hard Rock Albums chart. The band has been touring in support of Erase Me since it’s release. Underoath is Spencer Chamberlin (vocals), Aaron Gillespie (drums, vocals), Timothy Mctague (lead guitar), James Smith (rhythm guitar), Grant Brandell (bass), and Christopher Dudley (keyboards).

The stage went dark with nothing but words “Underoath” displayed on the big screen on stage. The band came out and started off the night with “In Regards to Myself” from Define the Great Line. They followed that with “Breathing In a New Mentality” from Lost in the Sound of Separation. Underoath had the crowd hooked and we were just getting started. The one thing I’ve always loved about Underoath is their passion and intensity on stage. Timothy, James, and Grant were playing hard and the more the crowd cheered and screamed the more it seemed to urge them on. Christopher was seriously a madman behind the keyboards, banging his head with his blonde hair whipping in front of his face back and forth. Aaron also did the same whipping away at the drums banging out some awesome drumbeats. As usual, Spencer‘s vocals were so powerful and clear and he led that crowd through every song. Underoath stuck to older music that night only playing three songs “On My Teeth”, “No Frame”, and “Sink With You” from Erase Me. The crowd was moshing, headbanging, and overall loving the performance. And when Underoath wrapped it up for the night, Spencer gave the crowd a nice surprise stating we’d hear new music from Underoath in 2020.

The stage was covered with a white curtain as the crew set up for A Day To Remember. As we were all waiting patiently, a rare, yet hilarious moment occurred. House of Blues Orlando starting playing The Backstreet Boys “I Want It That Way” over the loudspeakers. The crowd on the floor starting singing along with the song. But, the group of fans who kept the mosh pit going decided to start moshing and crowd surfing to the song. It’s not every day you see a mosh pit to The Backstreet Boys!
Soon enough the headliners A Day To Remember would be coming to the stage. The band from Ocala, FL formed back in 2003. Focusing on gathering a fanbase, the band performed and toured as much as they could that starting year and in 2004 released their EP Halos for Heroes, Dirt for the Dead. By the following year, the band signed onto a record label and released their debut album And Their Name Was Treason. The album received great reviews and the band continued to build upon the momentum. When the band released Homesick in 2009, the album charted at #21 on the Billboard 200 and hit #1 on the Billboard Independent Albums Chart. The following year the band released both an EP of cover songs titled Attack of the Killer B-Sides but also released their fourth studio album What Separates Me from You. That album charted at #11 on the Billboard 200, hit #1 on multiple Billboard charts, and was even certified as Gold. A Day To Remember was on the rise with great sales, a huge fan base, and fantastic music. The band ended up entering a lawsuit in December 2011 against their record label at that time, Victory Records, over royalties not paid. As the lawsuit was ongoing, the band continued to make music and prepared for a new album release. A Day To Remember won the right to self-release their next album with Common Courtesy in 2013. That album did very well and charted #1 on the Billboard Hard Rock Albums chart. In 2016 the band self-released Bad Vibrations. The album did very well and charted at #2 on the Billboard 200. A Day To Remember will be releasing their seventh studio album You’re Welcome with their new record label Fueled By Ramen. A Day To Remember is Jeremy McKinnon (vocals), Alex Shelnutt (drums), Kevin Skaff (guitar, vocals), Neil Westfall (guitar, vocals), and Joshua Woodard (bass).

When the curtain came down A Day To Remember was already onstage and immediately jumped into “The Downfall of Us All” from Homesick and then followed up with “All I Want” from What Separates Me From You. With bright lights on stage, two spotlights in the balcony, camera crew in the photo pit and at the soundboard display the action on the screen behind them, A Day To Remember made this show a huge production. The crowd was absolutely loving it all. They were singing along word for word, phones in their hands recording the action, and the mosh pit was moving hard, even requiring security to be in there to keep things safe. On top of that, fans were crowd surfing their way to the front to get as close as they could to the band. And the band themselves were having fun. Joshua was all smiles as he played bass. Neil was singing backup and smiling as he played. Kevin was wearing reflective sunglasses and grinning wide while he played. But, Jeremy was all over the stage running from side to side as he sang.

A Day To Remember sounded amazing during their performance. They played a huge setlist that night including songs such as “Paranoia”, a cover of “My Own Worst Enemy” by Lit, “Rescue Me”, and their latest single “Degenerates”. Jeremy thanked the crowd often for supporting them through all the years and praised House of Blues Orlando, especially the security staff, for keeping all the fans safe. Jeremy also called out how impressed he was that not one crowd surfer got dropped that night and some people even crowd surfboarded each other without getting hurt. A very impressive feat. A Day To Remember also wanted to ensure the fans were having fun as they threw out beach balls, shot t-shirts out to the crowd, and even threw toilet paper around. When they came out to encore and close the show, the fired off tons of confetti and streamers covering the entire crowd.
