Hi! Hello! Hi!! Thanks to all the kind folks who kept tagging me throughout Wednesdays and Sundays, despite my brain being eaten by Jelly Babies and Bad Brain-ness and the mixed blessing that is Christmas.

It's 2023, I'm back on my bullshit, sick again, writing anyway. How you doing???

It honestly feels really weird to not be working on Jelly Babies, but I'm diving back into the Rosethorn girl universe with my Jamie fic. Have a snippet of some Salisbury siblings:

It's incredibly stupid when my sister falls in love. 

The summer she turns seventeen, she starts every sentence with "Davy Says.”  

"Davy says we're getting weaker as a society because the rest of the world is progressing while we're stuck in the feudal era."

"Davy says that we need to band together to face threats from dark creatures that encroach on the World of Mages."

“Luce,” I say, “just let me eat my fucking spaghetti.”

The first draft of this fic was written... a while ago? But looking at it now, it needs massive rewrites, and it keeps getting deeper and wider, like a river. I love those moments of writing as discovery, where the more I read and write and think about things, the more I feel like I'm getting to know this person, Jamie (aka Uncle Jamby aka Jimothy).

Taking a quick scan of AO3, this may end up being the first (?) multi-chap Jamie-centric fic, which is fun and exciting! I get a kick out of being able to create weird new tags on AO3, like "POV Salisbury House" and "Swithin Grimm/Original Male Character." 😆

I've also loved seeing the resolutions/year in review posts that folks have been making, and I'd like to do something like that. But as always, my brain needs some time to churn it over and think about it some more. But now, time for tea and drugs and anime. ❤️

Thoughts While Watching Gilmore Girls, Season 2, Episode 14-"It Should Have Been Lorelai" (Part 2)

Part 1 and all previous commentary can be found in my Pinned post. This will be brief since I ran out of space the last time and the episode is wrapping up. As shitty as CrustyPher is I really don't want this episode to end because I have to face the HellTornado ShitShow Circus that is "Lost and Found" after this. Please take your time, Judgy (Lorelai) and Crusty. Let's recount part 1 a bit first. I'm waist-deep in the middle of a concerning conversation between Rory and Lorelai. Christopher's victim, Sherrie, isolated Lorelai in her kitchen while she was a guest in her home, told Lorelai she had no interest in being her friend but insisted that she needed immediate access to her underage daughter to which Lorelai accepts and sends Rory out to face an unknown fate with this complete stranger who just insulted her and that she just met an hour ago. The details of where Sherrie took poor Rory are vague at best except for a mention of the movies. While Rory and Creepie are at the movies, Judgy and Crusty (Lorelai and Christopher) went to FND together, which I skipped over because who the hell cares. The mysterious Rory and Sherrie evening is over and it's the next day. Rory is recalling the evening to Lorelai, where we learn Sherrie spent the evening spilling extremely personal details about herself to 16 year old stranger Rory Gilmore and was acting "very touchy feely". Lorelai of course is showing the appropriate level of concern for a mother.

(talking about Emily) Having not seen the scene in question, I'll just assume that Emily's reaction is a reasonable one so far as hearing about Lorelai agreeing to a premeditated kidnapping of her grandchild. Luke's arms come into frame for two seconds as he sets down two coffees they won't pay for. This episode is sorely lacking Lucas.

Cut to an amusing scene whereby Rory uses Kirk and Michel to sneak a contraband cd into Lane's totebag. Back to the diner where Crustypher and Sherrie show up to talk to Lorelai. Creepie Sherrie immediately asks about Rory and wants to know where she is.

Someone needs to sic Chris Hansen on your ass, you weirdo.

NO! MY GIRL RORYGIL HAS SUFFERED ENOUGH. SHE'S BEEN THROUGH IT! OKAY. Rory tells Lorelai that as a kid she sometimed imagined her real father was either Pee Wee Hermann or Matthew Broderick. Very random choices but okay. A deflated soccer ball would be a better father than Crusty.

What ever would this show be without Lorelai Gilmore Constantly Opening Her Big Fat Mouth Without Thinking First?

Lorelai tells Crusty he is so ingrained in her brain matter that he has caused her to subconciously sabotage every decent relationship she has ever had. But now that Crusty is settling down with Creepy Sherrie, she can finally move past him.

It's once again time to visit a classic Gilmore Girls Trope-The Man Who Has An Immediate Public Freakout At A Woman In Public. People are staring at you, you wad. ("People Are Staring, You Wad" should be printed on a bumper sticker they sell at the Stars Hollow gift shop. It should be plastered on the vehicle of every man who causes a scene in public with a woman on this show). No wonder poor little RoryGirl wanted to live in Pee Wee's Playhouse with a talking chair instead of having this sewer dwelling sperm donor for a father. PeeWee would make an excellent father, damn it. Globey and Jambi could be like her uncles. I wish to one day see the women of The Hollow rise up and revolt against every god damn Penis Haver on this show. They need to be sacrified to the Man Volcano. Even Jess. Okay, I can make a few exceptions. Dave Ryglaksi will be spared. Kirk will be spared. Paul Anka of course. Maybe Luke will get a trial first before being sarcified to the Man Volcano, he's kind of borderline, depends where we're at in the show.

Oh honey, I hope you packed some high SPF sunblock because you're definitely getting sarcified to the Man Volcano along with Dean, Logan, Logan's Annoying Friends, Tristan, Taylor Doose, Jason DiggerStiles, Max Medina, Mitchum Huntsburger, Lane's husband Zac, Headmaster Charleston, that creepy old professor Paris dated, and all the rest. We ride at dawn, Ladies. Meet me at Miss Patty's. Bring skewers. Luke in the background like "Jesus Christ I'm trying to run a business here."

Spared from the Man Volcano. For now. And this guy in the hat just trying to enjoy his fruit salad, he can live. Christopher immediately leaves to hug Rory outside like he actually gives a damn about her and looks back to make sure Lorelai is watching them through the window. What is the rent at Pee Wee's Playhouse? Rory should look into that.

I’m still plugging away at my EGF, but today was just backstory notes, so no fun shareable prose from that. I re-listened to AWTWB recently and it gave me a lot of Jamie Feels, so here's another portrait from the Rosethorn girl universe:

More blather, resolutions, & tags behind the cut, because I’m never going to master the art of writing shortform for Tumblr. 😆

Robot overlords: I’m quite torn about using DALL-E 2 now, because of the discourse on AI-generated art and stolen datasets, but I’m still emotionally attached to the art that was part of brainstorming Rosethorn girl. 

After a lot of wrestling, I decided that I’m still going to share some of my favourite DALL-E 2 generations, but I won’t be generating any new ones. It’s a murky compromise, but that’s where I’m at right now!

My shit lungs: After three weeks, I’m finally, finally getting better and feeling more like myself. I'm still slow and shaky and crawling along at a snail’s pace when it comes to writing, but I’ll take it. 

My head hasn't been in a fandom space at all for the past three weeks, so I'm also excited to dive back into reading fic!! But on the writer side, I am going to continue to be gentle with myself and toss expectations for myself out the window.

Resolutions: Some 2023 resolutions, in no particular order: 

Be content with doing less. 

Prioritise your health & well-being over your productivity. 

Keep having good conversations with people. Keep listening. 

Show up for your beloved people the best that you can. 

Keep doing weird shit and pushing yourself out of your comfort zone, into your growth zone.

Keep doing art that you’re bad at but that you enjoy. 

Say goodbye to old WIPs - finish them, bury them, post them as they are, or otherwise let them go. 

Walk outside more, especially before writing, as your doorway into diffuse mode. 

Remember to do grounding/self-compassion exercises before, during, & after writing difficult things. 

Let the soft animal of your body love what it loves.

Penelope Bunce is a Fucking Queen: “Being comforting isn’t one of my core competencies. Breaking people out of towers is.”

Simon and Jamie get fucking KFC in a stolen van after the hullabaloo with Smith-Richards and if that’s not nephew-uncle bonding at its finest, I don’t what is 

Miss Christie, the school nurse, is the only person (I think) who basically says to Simon, “I’m sorry for your loss” instead of “The Mage was a flaming sack of shit” 

I’m not crazy… Penny really is a year younger than the rest of them (thought I was mixing this up with Hermione)

LUCY also started Watford a year early fsalkjsadsjlkfsdljkdfs (now I have to go back and fix my timelines for Rosethorn girl, FUCK) 

Just like Lady Ruth, Mitali hoped that Lucy would come out of hiding after the Mage died (just stab me harder in the heart, Rainbow)

I DO really want a fic of bisexual Martin Bunce making bread; I feel like our core competencies overlap in many ways

Q: “So, you’re - you’re on a quest?”

A: “Yes we are on a quest, me and Penny and Baz, Penny says it is a Quest for Cakes and Books. I thought maybe it'd just be for Cake but Penny says that every Quest is a Quest for Knowledge."

Q: “And Penny’s hair is - purple?”

A: “Yes purple is her favourite colour she is going to turn her hair people once she has her own wand, she told me.” 

Q: “Oh-okay. And, um, your pal Baz. He’s looking. A bit peaky, isn’t he?”

A: “Yes because he’s a vampire.” 

Q: “…”

A: (whisper) “It’s only a make-pretend, Uncle Jamby, he isn’t really a vampire.” (Normal voice) “Anyway he’s a good vampire. He only bites people who deserve to be bitten, like that lady who said mean things to you at Gran’s party.” 

Q: (choking) (clearing throat) “And is he. A bard? What’s this little instrument he’s got here?”

A: “It’s his violin. Baz says he doesn’t smile when he plays the violin but he does, I saw it.  Sometimes if I am very quiet he doesn’t notice I am there and I get to listen to him play. He’s very good.”

Q: “And you’ve got. A sword?”

A: “Yes it’s a sword fork because Cake.” 

Q: “Cool.” 

A: “Can we play now?”

Q: “Of course. Do we - should I make a little Lego me?” 

A: “No, you get to be the Cake.”
