Reducing the Impact of the Packaging
Tumblr media
Watch brands are developing presentation boxes of recycled or green materials, a sign of their concern for sustainability.
Tumblr media
Top, watch cases made from recycled PET (polyethylene terephthalate) fabrics from Adatte Design, a family-owned industrial design studio in Lausanne, Switzerland.
From Tiffany’s blue box to Cartier’s red one, product packaging can produce powerful brand associations and create a visual appeal that awakens desire for the objects inside.
When it comes to high-end watches, oversize boxes in glossy exotic woods or covered in leather are industry mainstays, less for their practical utility than to help build a sense of luxury and reinforce the perceived quality of the products they contain. In the resale market, they impart an added sense of authenticity for buyers, who assign more value to a watch that is sold with its original box and papers.
Now, with consumer attitudes in favor of eco-friendly products, some brands are thinking “outside the box” and making sustainability a central component of a business strategy in which the packaging itself is a selling point.
“Big glossy wooden boxes are so dated,” said Jeremia Adatte, a designer and administrator at Adatte Design, an industrial design studio in Lausanne, Switzerland. “Who wants to see trees cut down to make a watch box?”
Adatte, a family-owned business founded by Mr. Adatte’s father, Georges, has been producing packaging for clients in different industries since 1991. “Packaging is more important today than ever,” Mr. Adatte said. “Just look how popular unboxing videos are on social media.”
With 20 graphic artists and designers, the company designs and produces packaging, display accessories and corporate gifts made from recycled and nonrecycled material. A partner factory in Shanghai handles nearly all of Adatte’s production, with some sourcing and finishing done locally in Switzerland or in Italy, France, Germany, Spain and the Czech Republic.
“Coming up with an original idea takes years of research and development, whether it is a new concept or a design to meet specs for a client,” Mr. Adatte said. “Our approach is innovation-focused, both in design and in sourcing new materials.”
Adatte’s website lists a number of watch brand clients, including Breitling, TAG Heuer and MB&F MAD Gallery, and the company said it had designed a variety of innovative packages, objects and display options for them. However, Mr. Adatte said he cannot be specific about projects, and most brands, when asked, would not even identify their suppliers.
“When you are creating a box with ‘poor’ materials, like cardboard or upcycled plastics, you need a strong design and that is attractive enough for an expensive watch,” Mr. Adatte said.
But designing sustainable packaging is not just about image. It can have a financial impact on the brand’s bottom line, especially when the solution is scalable.
“Today, brands look for innovative packaging because their customers care about waste,” Mr. Adatte said. “But beyond improving their image, lightweight, easily transportable boxes save brands money.”
Tumblr media
Last month, Breitling introduced a foldable watch box made entirely of recycled PET, a plastic from bottles.
Tumblr media
The side and front wings of the box fold up and fasten with snaps to create a 3-D shape. A travel pouch, also made of recycled PET, is included.
Breitling’s chief marketing officer, Tim Sayler, said that reducing the company’s carbon footprint and its shipping costs were winning arguments in its decision to adopt new packaging. Last month it introduced a foldable watch box made entirely of recycled PET, or polyethylene terephthalate, a plastic from bottles.
“Transportation is always an issue in sustainability,” Mr. Sayler said. “Our new box ships flat so it takes less space.”
A functional piece, its side and front wings fold up and fasten with snaps to create a 3-D shape. An inside pocket was designed to store the digital certificate of ownership that the brand recently introduced for its watches. A travel pouch, also made of recycled PET, is included.
The box may be recycled again, according to Breitling, if it is taken to a facility that handles recycled PET.
“This box,” Mr. Sayler said, “was designed by our team of in-house designers who work on everything from watches to collaterals to boutiques, with external input from partners who advised us on design and material sourcing." He would not identify the partners, but said the design process took 18 months.
Next year Breitling expects to use around 200,000 of the boxes, made by a German packaging supplier in China, for new watches. And, in an effort to reduce shipments, the boxes will be dispatched directly to boutiques or subsidiary markets rather than to Breitling’s Swiss headquarters, Mr. Sayler said.
Breitling is not the first brand to take this focus. In 2018, IWC Schaffhausen designed boxes that “contain 90 percent less plastic than previously, and 80 percent of the plastic remaining is recycled,” Franziska Gsell, IWC’s chief marketing officer and chairwoman of its Sustainability Committee, wrote in an email. The weight and volume of the boxes also were reduced by 30 percent.
Tumblr media
Nepto, a Paris watch brand, said it  used only recycled cardboard and paper for its boxes.
Why not abandon plastic altogether? The Paris-based watch brand Nepto uses only recycled cardboard and paper for its boxes, according to its founder, Vincent Ifrah, 33, who holds a degree in materials engineering. Nepto makes about 1,000 watches a year, with a starting price of 189.90 euros ($224). “Our boxes are 100 percent recycled and recyclable, and they look good, so you will not want to throw them away,” Mr. Ifrah said.
“There is really no reason to use plastic to make watch boxes today since we get the same quality using cardboard,” he said. “Ours are made in France at a very low cost, proof that it is perfectly doable.”
Recycled cardboard also is the packaging material most widely used by Oris, a Swiss watch brand. And, according to Rolf Studer, its co-chief executive, the business will become CO2-neutral next year by managing travel, reducing energy usage and several other steps.
“When we started talking about sustainability 10 years ago, everyone would yawn,” Mr. Studer said from the factory in Hölstein, Switzerland. “Now everyone is talking about it.”
Tumblr media
Oris, a Swiss watch brand, said it mostly used recycled cardboard in its boxes. The box for The Clean Ocean Limited Edition diver watch is made partly of marine algae.
In partnership with Pacific Garbage Screening, a nonprofit association building a floating platform designed to capture ocean plastics, Oris last year released the Clean Ocean Limited Edition diver watch in a series of 2,000 (priced at 2,200 Swiss francs, the equivalent of $2,400). The watch came with a case back decorated with a medallion of recycled PET and was sold in a box made partly of marine algae and covered with recycled paper originally used to filter algae in Venice’s Grand Canal. A travel pouch of recycled cotton is to be added next year. “We want to bring attention to the fact that trash can have a second life even in a luxury product,” Mr. Studer said.
“Everything about owning luxury is changing,” he said. “Investing in luxury product only makes sense today when it is in something you love and will keep forever.”

Note
could you write a little piece about their first christmas together in Still In Love? :)
OH MY GOD! I WANTED TO DO THAT SO MUCH SO HERE YOU GO BABY!!
Here’s 1.4k of fluffy Harry on Christmas night realizing he’s in love
You spent the day with Anne. You two bonded over christmas cookies and Mariah Carey’s songs. You met her almost two years ago now. You remembered you and Harry were still only friends back then but she saw right through you and laughed that she’d only give you two three months before you’d get together. It only took two. And the next time you met her, you were introduced as the girlfriend. She always stated clearly that she liked you… More than any partners Harry brought home. It wasn’t that many but she said you were the kindest.
It was a little after you and Harry celebrated your first year anniversary. You couldn’t believe it has been already a year. He was your best friend and your lover and now he was about to become family. He invited you to spend the holidays with his family in Cheshire.
You were quite nervous. You knew his mom liked you and his sister too but spending two weeks with them in their house was very different than a two hour dinner at your place. But you accepted with great enthusiasm and you couldn’t wait to meet his childhood friends and his extensive family.
You placed the cookies in the oven and high five’d Anne.
“They’re going to be good!” You giggled while you took the kitchen gloves off your hands.
“The best, if we’re lucky.” Anne grabbed her phone from the counter and stepped out the kitchen door with you following her steps.
Harry was resting on the couch, his grey hoodie on, a beanie, his light jean and his fuzzy socks. He looked so comfortable and warm. You just wanted to rest on his lap for the rest of the day. You smiled at him and he patted the spot next to him for you to sit. You dived into the couch and placed your head on his shoulder as his arms wrapped around you.
“I hope you didn’t mess the cookies up.” His giggle filled the room and before you could answer, Anne spoke.
“She’s a great cook, Harry!”
He laughed at loud and gave you a side look. “She has a hard time boiling water for pasta…”
“In my defense, your new kitchen stove is tricky.”
Harry kissed your cheek and patted your head in an endearing way.
“Of course, baby. It’s the stove’s fault!” You chuckled at his sarcasm and shook your head.
Harry’s family started filling the room, and the sun that shone through the windows started fading away. The christmas lights lit up the place and the candles and food smells filled the air. It was warm, wholehearted and felt just like home, especially when you would stand in Harry’s arms.
Dinner went well, you cleaned the table with Harry and got caught in playful fight of who can wash the dishes the fastest. He won, of course. And now you owed him 27 kisses, that you promised you’ll give him later, already planning some sexy time in your mind.
You went back to the living room, Harry by your side. The cookies you baked earlier were on a plate in the middle of the coffee table and the plate was already getting empty.
It was now time for christmas presents. You couldn’t wait to give Harry his gifts. You loved meaningful gifts, little gestures that meant a lot and Harry felt the same way. You watched him offer cute little books and socks to his family and now it was your turn to receive his gift.
“Can I give you mine first?” You gave him a warm smile and he nodded.
You pulled the box from underneath the tree and offered it to him. “Merry Christmas, love.” You whispered and you saw him grin from ears to ears. He gave you a fond look and unboxed his presents.
You watched him pull the first present; a vinyl of Elvis’s Tupelo Live in 1956. He grinned widely when he saw that it was a special one, a 78 record that was very rare.
“How did you even find this?” He grabbed your cheek with his hands to pull you in for a kiss.
“I got my ways! Keep going, it’s not all!”
He pulled a cassette out of the box, one with a few words on it; ‘Songs that make me think of you.’ You made him a mixtape with every song that left a vivid memory of him in your mind. Of course The Pina Colada song was on it, but he could also find songs such as The Way You Look Tonight, Brown Sugar, Julia Dream and even My Neck, My Back. Just songs that made your heart flutter in a daydream of him or songs that made the two of you dance in the most stupid way.
He giggled as he read the titles on the mix tape. He dig deeper in the box and found a little velvet box. He opened it to find a signet ring with a huge golden lion holding a little ruby. His eyes sparkled at the sight of the ring. “It’s gorgeous.”
You knew he loved rings and you found this one in a flea market a few months earlier and couldn’t stop thinking about placing it on his finger.
“Can I?” You asked as you took the ring out of the box. He reached his hand to you and you placed the ring on his finger. “It’s really cute.” You giggled and he posed for you.
He pulled you in for a kiss and rested his forehead on yours. He whispered against your lips. “Thank you so much, my darling. You’re the most wonderful present I could have, anyway.” You smiled against his lips.
“Well, you two could have some modesty, there’s children here!” You heard Gemma’s laugh and pulled away from Harry.
“Alright, my turn, then?” He asked and you nodded, shaking your hands in excitement.
“I don’t have as many beautiful presents, but I have two!”
He handed you a box, neatly packed in a pink paper wrap. You opened it and discovered a limited manuscrit edition of your favorite book The Portrait Of Dorian Gray. You gasped at the sight of the book. It was such a special treasure for you. You loved special editions of books and now you were holding one that was so rare, you couldn’t quite figure out how Harry managed to get it. You jumped in his arms and thanked him. Leaving sloppy kisses on his face.
“I’m not done yet, love.” He pulled out a little velvet box, similar to the one you gave him.
“It’s funny how our minds are connected.” He opened the box to reveal a Cartier’s white gold and diamond ring with a ruby in the middle. Surprising coincidence.
“I know we said no expensive gifts but it’s more than just a ring…” He took it between his fingers and took your hand.
“It’s a promise ring.” He placed it on your finger and the sensation of the cold metal made you shiver.
“It means a lot for me.” He looked at you and stroke your cheek with his fingers.
“I want you to know that I want to spend the rest of Christmases like this. With you in my arms.”
You couldn’t help but smile fondly, your eyes sparkling with love.
“Would you promise me that as long as you love me, you won’t take it off?”
You nodded; your eyes filling with tears of happiness.
“At least not until I replace it with a wedding ring, right?” He giggled and you placed your hands around his neck, pulling him in closer to you.
“I promise.” You beamed at him and he kissed you tenderly.
“I’m so in love with you.” He smiled against your lips and you couldn’t believe he told you he loved you. He was in love with you and this ring was a pledge of his love.
“I love you, Harry.” He grinned from ears to ears and pulled you in for another kiss.
You two came down from your little cloud of reverie when Anne’s voice resounded in the room.
“Who wants the last cookie?”
Harry grabbed it first and looked at you playfully.
“C’mon. Give it to me!” You chuckled and tried to take it from his hand.
“Say you love me?” He raised his eyebrows cheekily and in a moment of inattention, you grasped the cookie. You poke your tongue at him.
“I love you.” You smiled before biting in the cookie, feeling Harry’s hands wrapped around your waist as he bit a piece of the cookie you held.
Just another moment of shared love on the long list you hoped to build with him.

ON COLLABORATION
by Réginald-Jérôme de Mans
A four-year-old video went viral recently. Montegrappa, a respected maker of quality fountain pens, announced a showily hideous snake-encrusted $50,000 gold pen and matching watch through CGI special effects that would make the late 1990s blush and nonsensical narration by none other than Sylvester Stallone himself. Designed by Sly, the title of their collaboration was CHAOS. (You’re supposed to hear an electric guitar in the background as you finish that sentence.)
If I were Carrie Bradshaw, here’s where I’d coyly ask, Is every collaboration… chaotic?
My friend Derek Guy of the blog Buy, Workwear! recently drew my attention to three seemingly bizarre collaborations involving Savile Row custom tailors Henry Poole, Anderson & Sheppard and Huntsman. Poole, the self-styled founders of Savile Row, put its name on an-Adidas sneaker, Anderson & Sheppard, which a few decades ago legendarily employed a man to turn potential customers away from its forbidding premises, launched a capsule collection of ready-to-wear sportswear on the e-commerce website Mr. Porter, and Huntsman, infamously the most expensive custom tailors in Savile Row, announced a custom suit in Reebok’s Flexweave performance material.
What is collaboration? Leaving aside its connotation of accommodation and assistance of authoritarian governments, the word suggests constructive cooperation by multiple parties, each adding value the other could not due to their unique capabilities. Huntsman’s making a suit in Reebok Flexweave comes closest to that idea of collaboration: the custom tailors there experimented with a new performance material with very different properties than the wools and linens they usually tailor to create a suit made out of a stretchier, sportier fabric. In concept, this collaboration effectively melds the idea of the modern (Reebok’s performance fabrics) with the classic (Huntsman’s formal business attire individually and traditionally constructed by hand) for a very fashionable result: a sport fabric suit, a garment style intended for relatively formal occasions made out of casualwear materials. Because the fashion indeed has spun, for better or worse, to a sort of casual devolution of classic menswear.
But Anderson & Sheppard ready-to-wear sportswear? And Poole sneakers? Trying to find out more about the Poole sneakers I discovered unboxing videos by sneaker enthusiasts reverently cooing about the custom-style fabrics in the shoe, more or less repeating the marketing materials that Poole-Adidas issued. Versions of the shoe have fabric panels that look like navy blue or grey pinstripe flannel, but it’s not like the tailors of Poole had anything to do with making those shoes, carefully cutting the cloth in whatever factory those sneakers were made in.
Rather, I suspect that what Poole and A&S did is a newer, shinier, less tawdry spin on licensing. Their sneakers or off-the-rack trousers are today’s Cartier or Bill Blass edition Lincoln Town Car. Rather than collaboration, Poole’s most valuable contribution to this endeavor may have been the transposition of its name. Surely Adidas felt that added some value, or it would not partnered with Poole either.
Compared to the Poole sneaker, the Montegrappa Chaos pen seems to reflect a lot of input from Stallone. No one else can go over the top like him, putting not just a snake, but a skull too on the pen. Maybe someday soon he’ll design a suit for Poole. But whether cash-grab or cooperative, constructive effort, these collaborations all suggest a common goal of these classic brands: to stay current and get their names out in whatever ways they can. Ridiculous as some of the results may be, the fruits of these strange bedfellowships are to appear contemporary, creative or even surprising, and thus relevant, in a world of quickly evolving fashions. All of them know the importance of renewing a customer base that can no longer be the old restrictive, clannish members of the Western upper class, whoever that may be. Broadening product lines, materials, partnerships can lead to cheaper and likely higher-margin moneymakers (like the A&S Mr. Porter capsule collection), and to changing what is still a default narrative of a stuffy Savile Row (for example) of standoffish and conservative men’s tailors… or of fountain pens that don’t spontaneously burst into flame over a CGI skeleton, however debatably cool that may be.

You might've seen on stories a few weeks ago I did an "unboxing" of all these goodies sent to me by @beccajross for being on #TheQueensRising/#TheQueensResistance Street Team! #TQRStreetTeam If you missed it, I added it to Story Highlights in my profile, check it out! The Queen's Resistance is the second book of this duology and I've been eagerly awaiting to hear more of Brienna's story since I read Queen's Rising as an ARC back in November 2017 (!!!) I recently listened to the audiobook of Queen's Rising to refresh my memory and let me tell you - I loved it even more a second time! I didn't think it was possible, but I fell more in love with Brienna's passion and strength. She really is one of my all time favorite female protagonists. This is a world in which daughters are valued over sons, and Queens over Kings. This isn't something I've often come across before so I loved how refreshing that was~ The Queen's Rising has such lush world building, I can picture everything so clearly. Of course, these portraits of Brienna and Cartier don't hurt ;) The world has such an intricate history, it's so well thought out, including family trees in the beginning! Oh and there's a map of course. Maps are always a plus! If you haven't read this yet, I HIGHLY highly recommend it, especially before The Queen's Resistance comes out on March 5th!!! (Which is so soon now!!!) Q: Who is your favorite female protagonist? (And why!) #RebeccaRoss #bookstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/BuKf876HFrR/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=s8dqt3gupg1c

Luxury Made Easy with Shopper’s Alley
Tumblr media
I was first a layout maker before becoming an active blogger, and I used to design online shops back when Multiply was the hub for online shopping. Naturally, I got drawn into shopping myself, and I have been buying clothes online ever since I could remember. Fast forward to a few years later, I still shop online, but not as much as I used to before - simply because I do not have the time or energy to, due to the multitude of things I do on a day to day basis!
On some occasions where I stumble upon luxury goods (e.g. designer bags, shoes, perfume, etc.) and want it really bad, I go and message my Mom so she could get it for me abroad. But then I’d have to wait weeks, even months, for the balikbayan boxes to get filled so that the shipping would be sulit. Not all luho cravings need immediate gratification of course, but it helps ease the mind to know that there are local boutique retail service providers available to help us get over that shopaholic itch - at a touch of a button.
Here comes in Shopper’s Alley. “In a nutshell, Shopper’s Alley is your gateway to every in-season high-street designer staple you desire, ranging from shoes, jewelry, watches, bags, or more,” explains Jovy Rabelas, CEO of Shopper’s Alley. “Whether you saw it in a magazine, on television, or online, we can have that item bought and sent straight to your doorstep. More than that, we also give shopping recommendations based on quality, craftsmanship, and trends.”
Tumblr media
Shopper’s Alley’s luxury managers are set for departure each month to help clients unbox designer items exclusively sourced straight from the runways & window displays of fashion capitals around the world.
“One of the prestigious fashion neighborhoods we source designer items from is the ultra-exclusive Parisian quarter of Avenue Montaigne Paris,” says Jovy. “It’s where we shop for the latest designer items from fashion institutions like Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Dior, CHANEL, and a lot more.” Milan's luxury shopping district Via Montenapoleone is another luxury stop Shopper’s Alley visits yearly, in their quest to scour the globe to help clients update their collections.
Another one of their stops is Madison Avenue in NYC, which is home to the Big Apple’s most extravagant brands. Beneath the city of Westminster in London lies Old Bond Street, a well-known shopping hub that designer brands like Burberry, Tiffany, De Beers, Cartier, Gucci, and Saint Laurent call home. Lastly, Japan's biggest luxury shopping and entertainment district, Ginza is home to flagship stores of the world’s most renowned upscale brands.
Tumblr media
What’s great about Shopper’s Alley is the fact that they source their goods straight from flagship stores where the particular brands originate from. This ensures the item’s quality, authenticity, and competitive pricing. “We get our Hermes and LV items from Paris, while the Burberry ones come straight from London, for example,” Jovy adds.
Tumblr media
From the new elite to the capable, successful, and the up & coming, hundreds of satisfied clients have already splurged on the best designer deals, all at the touch of a button, with the help of Shopper’s Alley.
“Do you have your sights set on a designer item? Let us know and our luxury managers will help you source it from the most upscale boutiques around the globe,” Jovy invites. “We are, after all, experts in helping your nurture your taste for timeless luxury, craftsmanship, and design.”
For more information about Shopper’s Alley, Please visit http://shoppersalley.ph, send an email to [email protected] or call 3287999 local 110.
