Arttrober Day12: Kitana (Mortal Kombat)
Beautiful and deadly. Good thing she's on Earthrealm's side. :D
I think I still had the most fun playing Ultimate MK3.

Mortal Kombat Trilogy fans, I have a question!

Does the PC port of MKT have the aggressor bug where even if you disable the aggressor you still get the effects of aggressor? I know it's a thing on the PS1 version but I wonder if this is a thing across the non-n64 versions.

Man, nothing in Mortal Kombat matches the absurd trajectory Johnny Cage had through the original games. What an absolutely phenomenal character. XD
MK1: Based on Jean-Claude Van Damme and originally intended to be the main character when this game was pitched as a Van Damme vehicle, Johnny Cage was an action movie star with incredible martial arts skills, trained by great masters from around the world. He entered the Mortal Kombat tournament, unaware of its true nature, to prove his skills were real and not the product of stunt work and special effects.
He didn't win the tournament, but he kicked some ass and got a cool story to bring home. He immediately filmed his own version of the events and made Mortal Kombat: The Movie.
MK2: When Cage heard that Sonya was being held captive in Outworld and everyone needed to go fight a new tournament to free her, he dropped everything. Literally. He was in the middle of shooting a film and he just ran off to go on an adventure with his new kung fu besties, leaving the director holding the bag. What a dick.
He had a thrilling adventure and got some ideas for a new screenplay, then came home and filmed Mortal Kombat 2. No idea what became of his previous film, but the experiences left him certain that another one was on the horizon. He had a trilogy to complete now, and he couldn't wait for--
MK3: Johnny Cage died immediately. Didn't even get to participate in the plot. "Extermination squads" got him right at the beginning. However, due to the circumstances of the plot (the villain was merging Earthrealm with Outworld), dead souls couldn't pass on to the afterlife. This gave Cage a chance to possess his own corpse and show up to the party anyway as the 90's equivalent of a DLC character.
After Shao Kahn was defeated, Cage ascended to the afterlife. He was not able to film a movie about this. Yet.
MK4: Once again the equivalent of a DLC character, Cage looked down from heaven and saw everyone having trouble fighting Shinnok. So he asked Raiden to bring him back to life. Raiden was like, "Sure, why not," and poofed him into mortal existence again.
This time he got a No Takebacks clause so he got to be alive again once the dust settled.
Deadly Alliance: While filming his latest movie, Mortal Kombat: The Death of Johnny Cage, Cage threw a tantrum over the trash writing for his character. Calling the writers hacks for repeatedly killing off and reviving his character, he stormed off the set and ragequit production to go hang out with his kung fu besties.
Raiden told him where to meet and Johnny Cage unnecessarily air-dropped in by parachute just to look cool. There, he and the other heroes learned about the titular Deadly Alliance, and Johnny Cage ran off with them on another proper adventure.
He was promptly killed by the Deadly Alliance.
To be fair, so was everyone else. It was a total party-wipe.
Deception: The Dragon King Onaga raised Johnny Cage with the rest of the heroes as zombie warriors to serve him. Johnny's zombie immediately went to Hollywood and filmed the movie Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance about this experience.
Ultimately, Johnny's zombie was purified by Ermac and he was returned to life yet again.
Armageddon: Then everybody died and the timeline was rebooted.
And that is the complete history of Original Timeline Johnny Cage.

Can confirm that is exactly what happened to me so beware 🤣
i think my favourite thing about mortal kombat lore is that there is a guy named 'noob saibot' who is a) not a noob, but a master assassin, b) does not use sais and c) is the only named member of his assassin clan not to be turned into a robot at some point

Tables and tables of waves.
I gave up on Drezno/Jena as a wavetable voice once I learned that Piston Honda mk3 has the same external processing capabilities while hosting its own suite of additional features. Three body leaves the learning case for it and Daiko to enter.
That being said, it's not doing anything extra special in this patch - just acting as a normal thin digital oscillator, with a little morphing on the wavetables. It has a mix out through Ikarie droning and each individual osc enveloped through Data Bender, and Daiko provides percussion through Milky Way.
The real stars of the show are Tetrapad (Tete) and Quadrax, which are both such deep modules. Tetrapad is in combo mode supplying 1 LFO modulating Daiko (though tidbit mute switches), then 3 euclidian triggers - one for each channel of Taiko (1 on a straight 1/4 and 2 on a funky one, like 13/35), and another cleverly at 1/32 to act as a clock divider for Quadrax and Data Bender. Then I learned about internal triggering on Quadrax, where you can have a channel fire after the previous one's EoR of EoC - I'm using this to effectively get EoC triggers from channels 1 and 3 without the expander (I WILL pick one up, one of these days) to control a few other parameters.
All in all, a fun learning jam, but nothing too special. It honestly reminds me of some of my old recordings, with unison on PH3 sounding a lot like Telharmonic (but with a lot more range and controllability) - but ultimately it's dominated sonically by Data Bender.

Sega Dreamcast - Mortal Kombat Gold (PAL-UK)
Title: Mortal Kombat Gold
Developer: Midway Games / Eurocom Entertainment Software
Publisher: Midway Home Entertainment
Release date: 29 October 1999
Catalogue No.: T-9701D-61
Genre: 3D Fighting
An enhanced port of Mortal Kombat 4 to the Dreamcast. Sadly, Eurocom just ported many of the PlayStation assets to the Dreamcast, and it shows with quite a bit of polygon warping :/ Still, it sure meant the Dreamcast was ready for some Mortal Kombat. Shame it was not released in Japan. Mortal Kombat Gold or rather Mortal Kombat 4 is a sequel to the fantastic MK3, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, and Mortal Kombat Trilogy. Some weapons appear at random, but they rarely have much impact. And unfortunately, one of the best moves from MK4, the sidestep, doesn't work very well here. According to the instructions, you must "tap" the right trigger twice to get it to work, but it's extremely erratic, and you can't even reconfigure it on the options screen! That problem sucked a lot of the fun out of the game, and that's a shame because otherwise, this is a good-looking fighter. Still, I am quite happy to have this in my collection. Now this got me wondering. Who would publish it in Japan? Midway gave up on the Japanese Sega market aside from letting Sega Japan publish Ready 2 Rumble Boxing...

Mortal Kombat 2 (1998 alternate sequel) - Potential ideas so far
The story picks up where my slight variation of the 1995 movie left off. Shao Kahn enacts his plan to resurrect Sindel on Earthrealm, which causes it to start merging with Outworld.
It's now up to Liu Kang and the rest of his comrades to journey between realms, and save them for good.
The heroes:
- Liu Kang - Now the champion after defeating Shang Tsung, he quickly becomes a leader of Earthrealm's rebellion, but he still yearns for a normal life, especially after his bond with Sonya grows.
- Sonya Blade - Having grown more trustful of her allies, she aids Liu Kang on their mission to fend off the Outworld attack.
- Johnny Cage - Has matured considerably since the previous movie, and with the Outworld invasion, more people start to believe him as the hero he truly is.
- Kitana - Puzzled over Sindel's resurrection, she goes on a mission to rebel against Shao Kahn's forces and bring her mother back to the side of good.
- Jax - Now equipped with cybernetic enhancements after his loss to Goro, he assists Sonya and Liu Kang in their mission to save Earthrealm.
- Kung Lao - Liu Kang's cousin who joins the heroes after the Order of Light is attacked. More of a pacifist monk in contrast to Liu Kang's more rebellious personality.
- Sub-Zero/Kuai Liang - With Bi Han's death at Liu Kang's hands, he takes the mantle and has some animosity towards him, but he is willing to put it aside to fend off against Outworld, and the Cyber Lin Kuei.
- Nightwolf - A shaman who sort of becomes the secondary guide after his tribe has been attacked.
- Raiden - His powers have been decreasing due to the merger, but he is still able to guide the heroes.
The villains:
- Shao Kahn - The brutal emperor of Outworld.
- Sindel - Kitana's long-dead mother now revived as Shao's queen.
- Quan Chi - The Netherrealm sorcerer who is instrumental in resurrecting Sindel after Shang Tsung's death.
- Motaro - The centaur general of Shao Kahn's Extermination Squads.
- Sheeva - A female Shokan seeking to avenge her prince Goro, but is at odds with Motaro.
- Mileena - Kitana's twisted clone.
- Baraka - A mutant general of Outworld.
- Sektor - A cybernetic Lin Kuei assassin in cahoots with Outworld so that he can kill Sub-Zero.
Other characters:
- Scorpion - Resurrected after his death at Johnny Cage's hands, he is a wildcard who seeks revenge, but ends up protecting Sub-Zero.
- Cyrax - A cybernetic Lin Kuei assassin who has been unwillingly programmed to kill Sub-Zero.
- Smoke - Sub-Zero's longtime friend turned into a cybernetic assassin, he eventually rebels against his captors.
- Jade - Kitana's loyal friend and bodyguard caught between her duty and what is ultimately right.
It's 20+ characters, but it definitely would be longer than the first movie (at least 2 hours), meaning more time for certain characters to have more screen time, and even development.
The budget would be bigger, likely $40-45 million, which is how much Blade and Spawn cost, and bigger than the first movie's budget.
It's largely an adaptation of MK3 since the 1995 movie was already like a mix of the first game with elements of MK2.
Quan Chi's inclusion definitely sets up Shinnok for the 3rd movie. It also ties in with MK4, Mythologies: Sub-Zero, and his debut in the animated series, which was released a few years prior.
And no, Shinnok is not Shao Kahn or Raiden's father. That change made no sense.
That's all for now.

I do honestly think the final villains of the Mortal Kombat franchise should have been the Elder Gods.
Like, I don't trust them. Not one bit. At best they are useless and at worst actively malicious.
Let's start off by examining the main thing they're known for: creating the Mortal Kombat tournament. This was supposedly put in as a fair way to protect all the individual realms from being invaded and taken over. Solid in theory, but in practice it's horrible and doesn't work. The problem is it's a system that only ultimately benefits those with the most might and ruthlessness. Outworld has Tarkattans, and the Shokan and Centaurs and all sorts of just really horrible beasts. No other realm can really stand against any of those. Certainly not in direct combat, so ultimately this system just leads to realms that can't withstand this sort of might getting destroyed. First Edenia and then nearly Earth. In fact consider how close Earth has gotten to losing and being absorbed several times. It's only through the skin of their teeth that Earth manages to pull out a win.
But also despite the idea of this all being to 'protect' the realms from invasion, in both MK3 and the section of MK9 that adapts those events, Outworld just invades Earth anyway. And in MK9 we have Raiden straight up begging the gods to do something about this, but they're basically like "Due to a loophole in the wording of the contract we can't be bothered to do anything", and Raiden only gets their help after tricking Shao Kahn into basically breaking yet another part of the wording in the invasion contract.
When I first saw MK9 I kind of hoped the story would develop into them realising that the Elder Gods were the real enemy and we would eventually get some narrative where they just decide to kill the gods. Like, I wanted Johnny Cage, one of the few survivors of MK9 to lead the charge and help Raiden see that being devoted to the Elder Gods was a mistake and really what we should do is punch them really hard until their skulls explode out of their heads. I'm honestly disappointed that didn't happen. (Also cos it feels like Johnny has killed several gods by this point)
Cos also just in general the Elder Gods are really underdeveloped. It's surprising how integral they are to the lore and yet it seems we only know two of them. (And it doesn't help that we mostly have Shinnok and Cetrion, so not exactly poster children for the idea that the gods can be trustworthy).
I also feel like they could have just made Kronika an Elder God. Like, honestly why couldn't she have just been the Elder God of Time? I feel like that would have worked in a way more than just adding "new thing that has never been mentioned before but is totally better than a god we swear", especially when the Elder Gods are already such blank slates. I think it could have also tied into Raiden's arc from MK9 nicely, where we can have him finally realising that putting his faith in the Elder Gods was a mistake from the start and all the gods are happy to just throw away everyone's lives for the sake of making their own little 'perfect timeline'.
But also considering in the new timeline the Gods aren't even really there. They're barely a presence and the focus is predominantly on Liu Kang's godhood. Wouldn't it have been neat if the reason why they're barely mentioned is because the cast killed them all in the last game and now we've placed someone else actually decent in charge.
Anyway, thank you for listening to my rant about how I would rewrite the MK timeline.
