The Winds of Magic
Tumblr media
"We at the college have studied many ancient texts of magic, its origins according to the ancestors. They have solidified that the strings of magics are more like....winds....each blowing past us all unless harnessed by powerful individuals. These winds each blow into our world through the Astral Sea from different planes of existence. At the dawn of creation, when the cosmos was but a swirling maelstrom of potential, the Winds of Magic were born. These ethereal currents, flowing from distant realms of elemental power, carry with them the very essence of creation itself. There are many winds of magic, most of which cannot be touched by even the most powerful of mages without divine intervention. But there are primary winds that all of the others originate from. I shall go over each of the primary winds I have discovered in my studies
Hish, The Tranquil Tide of the Winds of Water: Picture, if you will, a realm where the sky meets the sea in an endless expanse of azure. Here, amidst colossal sea creatures and the gentle lapping of celestial waters, Hish arises as the serene Wind of Water. Its essence whispers of tranquility and life, imbuing our spells with the fluid grace of the ocean's embrace.
Kresh, the Controlled Inferno of the Winds of Fire:The heart of a realm ablaze with volcanic fury and the ancient roars of dragons. Here, amidst molten rivers and fiery daemons, Kresh reigns as the primal Wind of Fire. Its essence embodies the fierce passion of flames, empowering us to command infernos and wield great feats of molten fury.
Luth, The Celestial home of the Gods and the Winds of Light: Here the many gods and celestial beings bask in divine luminosity. Luth shines forth as the radiant Wind of Light, illuminating our magic with healing energies, banishing shadows, and invoking the blessings of celestial realms.
Roth, The Obsidian Veil of The Winds of Darkness: a shadowed realm, a twisted echo of our own world. Here, amidst undead horrors and shades, Roth lurks as the enigmatic Wind of Darkness. Its essence weaves illusions, unravels the secrets of the unseen, and delves into knowledge most dare not seek.
Voc, The Verdant Grove of the Winds of Nature/Earth: a curated wilderness tended by nature Daemon, Voc emerges as the vibrant Wind of Earth and Nature. Its essence harmonizes with the elements, granting us communion with the wilds, mastery over flora and fauna, and the nurturing embrace of the land around us.
Grush, the Primal Roar of the Winds of Beasts: The untamed realms of chaos and primal ferocity. Grush bellows as the wild Wind of Beasts, where monstrous creatures and primal instincts reign supreme. Its essence connects us to the untamed wilds, enabling communication with beasts, assumption of animal forms, and the raw power of nature's fury.
These primary winds shape the fabric of our world and the mages within it are able to use them to their own whims. We at the college have barely scratched the surface but I have not yet seen all of what magic can show me."

about to beat the game with this character so figured it was about time i shared her. estrel, golden order scion and D's apprentice/adoptive daughter. more about her under the cut because. oh boy this girl's got lore.
one day D came by the Bestial Sanctum to collect his incantations paycheck and gurranq just. had a kid. and he was like "...fuck it, i could use some backup anyway" and the rest is history
current working theory is that she came up from the deep siofra well? but this is all a big question mark.
D is the one who gave her the name estrel, to reflect her new surface life as a hunter of death (and because i fucking love elden ring's thing with characters having multiple names). uldin is her original name, but sees very little use nowadays
she's a golden order fundamentalist but she'll also employ bestial (of course) and dragon cult, erdtree and two fingers incantations, and also some misc. sorceries when the need arises. no fire or black flame until after farum azula, and no dragon communion/bloodflame/etc ever.
she wasn't actually that interested in lordship at first, until it became clear that pursuing it was the only way to change the state of the world and permanently free those who live in death. for most of the game her goal is just to weed deathroot
...well, until D dies. then she's out for revenge. she does kill fia; it doesn't feel as good as she'd hoped, but at least she's dead.
she also lands herself in ranni's entourage, but isn't aware at the time of her role in the night of black knives. when she does find out, she leaves ranni's service for a while
the whole game is kind of a crisis of conscience for her, honestly. it takes fia's death, and seeing the death-prince in person, for her to finally determine that she will do whatever it takes to stand before the elden ring and fix what she's come to see as a deep sickness at the heart of the golden order—the rune of death being only mostly sealed, an age where none can truly die.
(those who live in death, tarnished reincarnation—it's all the same. souls are trapped in a twilight, becoming sickened by death without the release and return it should rightly bring. the sun needs to set on the golden prince, so that they may break through the night to a new dawn.)
other misc npc questlines: nepheli (childhood friends at the roundtable), rogier (tries to help him behind D's back, regrets it), sellen (aids her), corhyn and goldmask (eventually gets the mending rune of perfect order)

Talking about the real life figures that reflect Eli Watkins in the novel, I know that Upton Sinclair modeled him on Aimee Semple-McPherson, but I think it is interesting to note that the book mentions the Four Square Gospel, the denomination she invented, as already existing two times. Paul, when asked by Bunny what Abel believes in replies “The Old Time Religion. It’s called the Four Square Gospel” and later Eli says “I stand by the Four Square Gospel.”
Today I found out about the child preacher Uldine Utley who was inspired by McPherson, reading the Wikipedia about how she was preaching since she was a kid seriously reminded me about Eli in the early sections of the book already being a local healer and preacher at 15.

Any idea on why Cammack cast Julie Uldine to be the last Broadway christine but didn't cast Katie Hall for POTO West End after she was done with the Restaged UK Tour? I think she was cast for the US version of the tour back then because she resembled Katie, being young and plus size.
Going to be honest anon, I'm stuck on the fact that you consider Katie Hall and Julia Udine to be "plus size". Like, this Katie Hall and Julia Udine?
Tumblr media
Katie Hall is "curvy" at best and if you consider Julia Udine "plus size", I'm not sure I want to know what your vision of "skinny" is.
(And if you're wondering, I'm not insulted about this because being plus size or fat is a bad thing, I'm insulted because these actresses are being described with terms that do not actually match their characteristics. I would love to see a fat Christine one day but the above is not it, Phantom needs to do better, and calling them "plus size" only hinders any progress.)
(Also to actually answer your question, Julia Udine's casting on Broadway post-pandemic and Katie Hall leaving the UK tour were a decade apart and I have no idea why you even consider them connected.)

𝐒𝐎𝐌𝐄𝐓𝐈𝐌𝐄𝐒 𝐒𝐇𝐈𝐓 𝐇𝐀𝐏𝐏𝐄𝐍𝐒 , and most of the time that shit isn't great. it's fucking awful. lizzy's no poet , she didn't even finish school [ did kill the schoolmaster though ] but sometimes life doesn't have to filled to the brim with awful shit. sometimes it can be good. and at this point , jaina has fulfilled everything she ever said she would and wouldn't. there is no real reason not to trust the woman. so maybe ...
... lizzy can feast the carnal appetite that isn't just for something in return. just because. just this once.
Tumblr media
who are they truly kidding anyway? they're a little too opposite on the social spectrum to ever have a normal relationship. all of this , though , at least for this one relationship doesn't mean jaina and lizzy aren't friends now. as long as they always keep their personal pact. LOYAL TO EACH OTHER IN THAT WAY.
[ & somehow , even in friendship , it feels like they're a little too deep if losing contact will feel like losing a limb. ]
" shit , is there anything you don't hear? " there's this roll of lizzy's eyes , the pub around them brimming to the top with noises. people chattering , glasses clicking , chairs moving. outside in the river , still in lizzy's line of sight is the uldine. the ship she calls home and loves more than just about anything here. jaina being the exception. the one she'll never voice. " sometimes i can't hold my fuckin' alcohol properly. like you ain't ever done stupid shit while drunk. "
[ hurry ] sender leans away from receiver to try and pretend they're not together or not in a relationship / from lizzy to jaina
[ this prompt. ]
Tumblr media
Things had changed. They had taken a direction Jaina wanted to avoid, but she KNEW she absolutely had no chance. Not when she joined in on the revelry going on in the neutral zone of a port town. She knew she had no chance as she laughed occasionally at the jokes her crew made, or Lizzy's people made. Knew she had no chance of running away again as they sat at the long table, a mug of the port town's best rum in hand.
Knew there was absolutely no fucking chance as she would feel Lizzy's thigh brush up against hers since they were sitting next to each other.
When she dared to glance over to the pirate, she caught a glimpse of the way Lizzy seemed to lean away from her and pretend she was becoming involved with a conversation with someone else. And Jaina just smiled, faintly. Because she understood. Jaina never wanted a serious relationship to begin with, Lizzy was just a really, really good friend with benefits.
So it's understandable why she internally berated herself for feeling the slightest bereft of Lizzy's touch.
How dare her emotions decide to get involved!
It was then she came face to face with an infuriatingly rational reason why she felt this way. She was tired of being alone for over a decade. Tired of feeling like it at all.
But knowing the fate that had been sealed for her -- she couldn't bear the thought of possibly leaving Lizzy if she were to sacrifice herself to save everyone. To save life itself. Which prompts her to respond in the way of finally looking at Lizzy and smirk instead. Just keep it casual.
"Aye, I think I'd like to hear about that embarrassing moment." She chipped in after hearing the pirate Lizzy had been conversing with admit he'd remembered one of Lizzy's embarrassing moments and lifted her mug, taking a swig.

The Battle guild was founded by Knight Chevalier Vito Battaglia, renowned for his valor as a Chevalier and his clandestine affair with King Louis the Cruel, envisioned a new paradigm for the application of magic. He observed that the conventional approach of the College of Stygian Sorcerers, which primarily employed magic defensively, did not fully harness its potential in combat scenarios and had in many situations put the nation at risk. Vito's insights led him to pioneer a fusion of martial prowess and magical aptitude, giving rise to the concept of Spellswords within the guild. These Spellswords, or battle mages, were trained not only in the arcane arts but also in the art of war, blending spells with swordplay to devastating effect on the battlefield. Central to Vito's vision was the creation of the Fleur de Bataille, a revolutionary code of honor that departed from the strictures of traditional Chevalier ethics. While still embodying principles of courage, loyalty, and honor, the Fleur de Bataille notably removed the requirement of celibacy, acknowledging the multifaceted lives of its members. Under Vito's guidance, the Battle Guild flourished as a bastion of martial magic, attracting mages eager to explore the dynamic interplay between combat and spellcasting. This innovative approach not only elevated the guild's standing within Luvalon but also positioned it as an indispensable force alongside the kingdom's conventional military apparatus. As the Battle Guild grew in prominence, its Spellswords became revered for their versatility and strategic acumen, playing pivotal roles in decisive battles and earning accolades for their contributions to Luvalon's defense and expansion. Many would be hired as mercenaries all over Aruin.

for the character dynamic ask game, estrel & D with 2, 6, and 16?
YEAHH MY GIRL THANK YOU (character dynamics ask game)
2. if asked to describe B to a stranger, what would A say? are they mostly truthful, or is there anything they omit?
ooh ok. assuming this is at the time of the game or like. roughly before it. i think one notable admission is idk if estrel would refer to D as her father? like, that's absolutely what she thinks of him as, but i think when talking to others she might default back to "mentor" or something similar like that. something not quite as. personal. other than that, if she's talking abt D to someone who doesn't know him, it's probably in the context of hunting, so that's probably what she'd emphasize most, his skill in battle etc.
putting the rest of this under the cut so yall dont get 5 miles of oc talk lmao
honestly this is all fairly similar from D's side as well. i think at the time of the game, when she's an adult, he might not even go "apprentice" but just the entirely bloodless "associate." she's just someone he allies with. you do not need to know the rest of it, random stranger. like, i think by and large these two are both very private people who are happy to abridge a lot in conversation and then go "well you literally didn't ask." sometimes this causes problems (i don't think estrel ever even knew D had a brother until she met him) but it's just where they both settle naturally so.
6. what does A think B thinks of them? or, if asked to describe their relationship, how would they do it? are they right?
i answered this a little bit above oops lol but while i do think that to strangers they sort of obfuscate their relationship, internally they're both very honest abt/aware of it. they're family.
one thing tho that i think estrel might not be aware of, is how much D respects her? like, estrel sort of assumes that she'll always be D's second, his apprentice, but he's genuinely very proud of/impressed by her progress and views her as an equal or near equal in battle. especially during the game itself. i think she finds out about this late in fia's questline (once he's already dead) and it catches her totally off guard.
16. free space: what's your favorite thing about their dynamic, as a fan or as a writer?
OOH OKAY this is a thing that. has not gotten much screentime at all thus far bc i'm still working out sooome of her background, but. a big reason that D agreed to take her on as an apprentice/ward was that the two of them—and he knew this as soon as he got a proper look at her—have very similar, if not the exact same past. in that i think they were both an attempt at an artificial lord of night, made by the nox. the whole reason uldin came to the bestial sanctum was to find and claim the rune of death (but she was very small at the time so gurranq just swatted her halfway across the room with one hand, and then took pity on her for the same reason. and bc he knew it wasn't actually her desire, it was someone else's)
i think they also don't... talk about this much. like, they obscure their names (D with his initial, estrel with abandoning "uldin") partly out of the same sense of privacy, but partly also bc they both to some extent reject their purpose. talking abt it would validate it too much. might draw them back in to what they still know they were made for. so they just... don't. but it's always there. and i LOVE that kind of "known but not voiced" so. yeah.

Ravnica D&D - Uldin's Artistic Journey
One interesting part of doing whatever art I want for each session of our D&D campaigns, is that the importance of events is up to my interpretation. What I mean by this is that if we run into an NPC and have a small conversation with them, I have no way of knowing if that character is the secret villain or just a random shopkeeper the DM invented earlier that day.
The other DMs in our D&D group are not as artistically minded as me, so when they invent non-player characters they have more of a spiritual idea in mind, and no solid idea what they would look like in character art. It is usually left up to my interpretation. This had no been an issue in most D&D campaigns I've been in. But in our Ravnica campaign, every big important villain character was established early, and as a player, I was not clued in as to which NPCs were a throw-away and who was the twist villain.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Uldin was introduced to the party in Chapter 7 as the mentor of player character Lavinia. As part of character creation in this campaign, you establish 2-3 NPCs connected to your character, so that the DM can more easily rope you into new storylines. Uldin was one of the only side characters like this that made it into a session arts because Lavinia's player role-played a huge crush on Uldin. So I made a very quick lazy design for Uldin in chapter 8's session art, thinking his plot relevance was very minor.
But much later in the campaign, it was revealed that Lavinia's guild, Izzet was involved in much more scandal and plot relevance than we thought, and Uldin was a secret bad guy. I had an opportunity to include Uldin in another session art. But I felt like my earlier character art of him did not do his plot relevance justice. So I had to redesign him for Chapter 21's art.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rather than a lab safety vest and goggles, I made him look more steampunk, befitting an ex-Izzet badass. I still had to hold onto some of those original design elements, so that it was somehow apparent it was the same character. And thankfully, this meant that he could look somewhat intimidating in the Finale.
This issue of under-designing a secretly important character is not something easily fixed. Maybe it means that I get better at designing random NPCs or maybe just allow flexibility in character design, so they can transform over time like I did with Uldin. Now that Ravnica and Everift are both over, two people in our group will be starting new campaigns in the coming months, so this is definitively a challenge I will experience again.
Wish me luck.

Ravnica
Chapter 29 - Finale
Tumblr media
After the Blizzet raids last time, the ships claimed by Solomon and Neigha meet up with the Izzet ship piloted by Boltz and Elaine and head to the Super Airship, seeing its arcane cannon readying to fire another death ray. Just as the four jump aboard, Gankey, who was thrown into the air by a Gruul giant, gracefully lands next to them.
The group are met by a small crowd of Blizzet Bleague goons, but they are no match for the heroes of Ravnica's tenth presinct. A quick brawl, heavily skewed in Gankey's favour results in a clear path to the decision below.
Meeting them in the bowels of the ship is Falish, an inventor who was booted from Izzet due to who her shading dealings outside the Guild, and a couple other Izzet Defectors. Falish had been responsible for a couple character deaths right at the start of the campaign (but humorously never met anyone in the current party). Thanks to a Psychic Lance by Solomon, and a Heat Metal by Elaine, Falish is quickly incapacitated, and then knocked out cold by Gankey. The rest of Falish's company us quickly dispatched.
Using a device on Falish's person, they unlock a group of cells on this deck holding monsters and innocent creatures, including Krenko again. This disables a large Energy Core that was powering the Arcane Cannon. Suddenly they hear a large crash from the upper deck.
* * *
Solomon, Gankey, Neigha, Elaine, and Boltz go up to meet Uldin, applauding their effort so far. He monologues about how his plans leading up to this moment have been carefully orchestrated for a long time.
Tumblr media
Originally he infiltrated Izzet to get access to powerful weapons he would use to bring Ravnica to its knees. He hired a Precog Mage names Bori Ringor to apprehend those who would rise up to oppose him. Then he would use Falish to hunt down those evading capture. His plan worked for a while, but every time one of his targets was removed, another would join the company of his enemies (aka new player characters would join).
Eventually there came a point, where no-one in the original company was left alive, but Uldin did not count on a completely unrelated group of strangers to rise up against his efforts. Right in this moment, Solomon and his new group of justice are the only ones stand in Uldin's way.
The battle starts violently as Solomon uses Hunger of Hadar on the area Uldin and his lackeys are in, and Neigha holds them there with an Entangle. Uldin manages to slip out and pushes a Globe of Invulnerability around him. Boltz, Elaine, and Solomon instead rush inside this globe, and spam him with damage from within. Meanwhile Gankey, and Neigha's thrall (she rescued from Chapter 25), take down his lackeys.
Fed up by this insolence, Uldin blankets half the deck with a Cone of Cold, knocking out more than half the party... cold. Although Uldin looks like he's unstoppable, this party has 3 healers, and through creative juggling of healing moves between Boltz, Elaine, and Neigha, the party are kept together and nobody dies. A final attack by a wildshaped Neigha kills Uldin.
Elaine regains control of the airship right before it crashes down to the the ground, and they land safety. Peace returns to Ravnica, for now.
