The Tower, Woolstone, Oxfordshire
In 1938 John Betjeman wrote a feature on ‘Gentlemen’s Follies’ for Country Life magazine. In it he noted a number of well-known follies, including the then very new tower built by Lord Berners at Faringdon, close to where Betjeman lived. He also mentioned another local folly, a tower in the village of Woolstone (then Berkshire, now Oxfordshire). So whilst the house above doesn’t look much like a…

Uffington White Horse: A Personal Journey Through Time and Chalk
This striking figure of a horse etched onto a hillside in Oxfordshire, made of trenches filled with white chalk, it stretches across the hill, both grand and unassuming against the backdrop of nature's green,  I came across something fascinating in the news today, and it made me pause and reflect. Have you ever heard of the Uffington White Horse? It’s this striking figure of a horse etched onto a hillside in Oxfordshire, made of trenches filled with white chalk, it stretches across the hill, both grand and unassuming against the backdrop of nature’s green, a silent witness to…

To make sure they stabbed the right people, ancient Britons formed primitive gangs, called tribes, and like many gangs they got into graffiti - vandalizing the countryside with gigantic doodles. Like this badly drawn horse. Or this decorative pervert.
Before Snapchat, hills were the most efficient way to distribute dick pics to a wide audience. As a result, Cerne Abbas became the second rudest hill in British history - after Benny.”

The Uffington White Horse is not only cool because it is 3000 year old monumental art that shows a bold minimalist elegance and sophisticated geographical engineering that radiates the signature of a skilled ancient artist / engineer or group of them. The chalk looks like sunlit highlights on a running stallion, and the contours of the earthworks look like muscle. This is a fantastic thing in general, and they cut it into a hillside during the Bronze Age, around the time when horse domestication was the hot new tech in the region.
It's also cool because since roughly 1400 BC when it was made, all the different peoples in the area have gone, "I don't know what that is or who made it, but it's cool and we're going to maintain it.
It is thin ditches cut into sod, filled with white chalk rubble. It's only 300-odd ft long. It's way smaller and simpler than it looks.

Every 20 or 30 years vegetation starts regrowing over it, that has to be removed. And everyone has been doing that consistently for 3000 years now. Because it's neat.
People keep taking ownership of a mysterious ancient thing, built by people we don't know for reasons we will never understand, simply because our fellow humans built it, and we still appreciate their work.
A rare possitive testament to innate humanness.

Motion, wardrobe, and change for the oc of your choice!
Tumblr media
KATE TIME!!!
motion: How does your OC move? How does their clothing help or hinder their range of motion? Are they flexible, coordinated, clumsy?
she is Bouncy she is Wiggly she is Never Ever Still. climbing and perching and leaning on people when she's around them. and also she is very likely at least moderately hypermobile!
thus, a lot of her clothing is relatively tight-fitting with the intention of, if not actually keeping her joints in place, then giving the sensation of doing so. also the big coats give the impression of her being Wider and more powerful than she really is, but can be easily discarded if she gets into a sticky situation.
wardrobe: How big is your character's wardrobe? Do they wear things threadbare, or can they afford new clothes often? Are they any good at mending and repairing their own clothing?
kate's got a Slightly more than reasonable amount of clothing for her social status — three waistcoats, a coat and a caped greatcoat, two-three pairs of breeches, a few shirts and pairs of stockings, two neckcloths, pair of shoes. she would very much like to have more waistcoats than that... as it is, she's got the Nice one (teal), the everyday one (lilac) and the One She Doesn't Like (gray).
cannot repair her own clothes to save her life. this is partially a function of her personal determination to prove she's Bad at Womanhood, but also this mostly expresses itself via the fact that she's deeply self-centered and entirely uninterested in doing anything at all that she does not want to do.
change: Has your OC ever drastically changed their appearance? Significant haircuts, big tattoos, complete wardrobe swap, etc? Why? How do they feel about the change?
...and here we are at the reason why I picked kate for this particular set of questions. kate is perhaps my character with the most Distinct appearance change of all — unconventional yet not Entirely outside of convention 18thc masculine styles into ceiling-crawling ghost girl.
kate, beyond everything else, is showy — there's a certain part of her that misses getting to wear physical clothes, but also this is easily overshadowed by the sheer joy of escaping the limits of gravity.

Today we went to see the Uffington White Horse, except the plot twist is that you can't actually *see* the white horse when you're at it. Which I sort of knew going in and was still surprised at how much you can't see it. (the National Trust sign said Please Don't Walk Down onto the Horse.) And then we didn't drive around to neighbouring villages to try to find the vantage points that do exist because of needing to eat food instead.

This is the view of the horse you get from just below on Dragon Hill. Dragon Hill has a flat top and its own bare chalk spot; The Lore has it that this is the place where Saint George killed the dragon.

It was a nice walk up a big hill, with lots of sheep, and rain threatening.
