Blog Post #1
Choosing where to go to school was quite the nightmare.
In my senior year of high school, life threw horrid things at me and my family. There was a lot of domestic violence in my home life. Eventually it resulted in my mom, two brothers, and sister fleeing the state.
I wasn’t allowed to tell anyone we were leaving. I had to pack, stay quiet, and wait for my mother to tell me when to move. The fleeing landed us over 1000 miles away from what we knew as home. It was a mess getting registered for school, transferring my transcripts and changing my name.
Things were taking longer than I wanted to wait, so I decided to make another move, without my family. I ended up 1000 miles away from them. Because I was 18, I was able to attend court alone to finalize my name change and then enroll in Wausau West high school.
By this time, I was already in second semester of my senior year of high school in a state without any family. I knew I wanted more for my life so I decided to work with the school counselor to find out which schools I would have a decent shot at getting accepted into.
I met with her multiple times discussing they types of degrees I could get and which universities she thought would be a good fit for me.
I applied for a total of three schools and was immediately accepted at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. They offered me multiple grants and a scholarship that made attending a university a realistic goal and plan.
Later, I found out that I was accepted into the other schools, however, they cost nearly double what UWSP did and I didn’t have nearly as good of financial aid as I did with UWSP. By the time I made my final decision to attend UWSP, I was working in a really good job that offered full benefits including a 401K, health and dental insurance, paid vacation and holidays for a part time position that was also flexible with my class schedule and I was not going to risk moving again and lose such an amazing opportunity.
