Yours Truly, Bradley Bradshaw Part 8 | Rooster x Reader
Summary: It has been too long since you heard from Bradley. Perhaps something went wrong. Or maybe he was avoiding you. Just when you start trying to accept that the last few months were too good to be true, things start to turn around again.
Warnings: Fluff, angst, language, Bradley being sweet
Length: 3000 words
Pairing: Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw x Female teacher!Reader
Check out my masterlist for more! Yours Truly, Bradley Bradshaw masterlist
Days went by. With only two weeks left of Bradley's deployment, you weren't really expecting to receive air mail at school with your name on it, but you certainly did miss it anyway. Your students asked about him every morning, wondering if he'd sent a new email, hoping for another video with Marty. But you got nothing in either of your email inboxes.
He was on your mind almost constantly. What happened on his mission? Did the Navy decide it was okay to cut off communication right when you were completely attached to hearing from him? Did this really mean you had to wait until the aircraft carrier arrived back in San Diego?Â
It was right before your students were due to arrive in your classroom that you had perhaps the most distressing thoughts of all. What if something went terribly wrong and he didn't survive? Or what if this was simply his way of ghosting you before he had to see you in person?
Jayden raced in ahead of the rest of your class, calling your name along the way. "Did Lieutenant Bradshaw write back yet?"
You pointed him toward his desk as you shook your head. "I already explained that he may not have time to respond before his deployment ends."
Jayden just bounced in place in front of you. "Then that means he can visit us when he gets back!"
Now a small group of your kids surrounded you, and you wished more than anything that you could tell them that Lieutenant Bradley Bradshaw, their beloved pen pal, would definitely be visiting your classroom in a few short days. Instead you told them, "Please, take your seats so we can start our Natural History lesson."
This turned out to be your new normal. Every time you got an email notification, you jumped to unlock your phone, but it was never a message from Bradley. When you saw a box tucked in your mail cubby in the school office, you ran for it, only to find the science supplies you ordered weeks ago had arrived. You even forced yourself to go back and read some of the old emails from him, just to make sure it all really happened, but his words left you aching for more.
...I like giving Gorgeous teachers butterflies...
...You'd look adorable snuggled up in your bed. But then again, when aren't you completely Gorgeous?...
...Gorgeous girl, you're messing with my head...
...And it's not a matter of if I touch you, it's a matter of when...
After nearly two weeks had gone by, you tried to figure out if the USS Theodore Roosevelt was back in port, but short of driving to North Island to see for yourself, you couldn't seem to find a solid answer online. And if you did drive there and found it at the dock, what were you supposed to do? Contact the US Navy? If they told you that nothing happened to Lieutenant Bradshaw and that he was perfectly fine, you'd be mortified. If they told you something in fact did happen to him in the last two weeks, you'd be devastated. That's assuming you could even get them to give you any information at all which was doubtful.
On Friday, you were on the verge of tears as you got ready for work. "You're being ridiculous," you whispered, and that fact made you want to cry even more. You tried to take the time to make yourself look presentable, thinking that may be the key to having a good day. Your outfit was cute. Your makeup looked nice. But you weren't smiling, and you didn't feel like doing so at all.Â
You grabbed your bag, hoping the short ride with your favorite playlist would be enough to get your spirits up, but all you could think about was how you probably weren't cut out for life with a guy in the military anyway. Waiting around like this to see what was going on was making your stomach upset, and you weren't getting enough sleep. When you closed your eyes, you just pictured a very kissable face with a scarred cheek and big brown eyes.
"You need to focus," you scolded as you parked your car and headed into the school with your ID badge. You had eighteen kids who required your attention, and you'd once again give it to them, because you were fantastic at your job.Â
This morning, Violet was the first one to mention Bradley in passing, and you had to shake your head. "Please find your seats. If I hear from Lieutenant Bradshaw, I promise I will let you know. I'm not hiding any letters or emails from you all, okay?" You tried to smile as you said, "I'd like to hear from him every bit as badly as you would. I can guarantee that."
You struggled through your morning lessons, often reminding yourself that you needed to focus on your students. Then you sat quietly at your desk with the classroom lights off during lunch, scrolling back through the dozens of emails you'd exchanged with Bradley on your phone. You pulled up the picture of the sun setting behind him in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, and even though you tried, you couldn't find anything other than the most sincere expression on his handsome face.
Maybe he would text you this weekend, letting you know he was back and your date was on. You had to believe he would still contact you. When the bell rang, you counted to ten, and then your students came flooding back through your classroom door. They wanted to tell you all about how Jasper from Mrs. Wynn's class got in trouble during lunch, and you humored them before saying, "I'm sure none of you would misbehave like that in the cafeteria."
"No way!" Henry promised.
"That's what I like to hear," you told him with a forced smile. "Once you're all in your seats, we'll start our math lesson. Maybe I'll put a few aviation problems on the board at the end if you show me how well you can focus for the next twenty minutes."
You had just started copying the first fraction that you wanted to discuss from your notebook onto the board when there was a sharp knock on your classroom door. You sighed and let your forehead rest briefly on the white board, knowing that another disruption would completely derail your kids after all the lunchtime nonsense. When you turned to face the door, they were already starting to chatter with each other.Â
"Come in!" you called out, and every head in your room whipped around to see who was there and what they wanted.Â
When the door swung open, the room went silent. The first thing you thought about was how peculiar it was to see someone in a khaki military uniform standing there. Then your eyes slid up that tall, muscular frame as your lips parted in surprise. As soon as you met his gaze, he smiled and said, "Hey, Gorgeous."
You couldn't speak. As he took a full step into your classroom and pulled the door closed, you finally noticed he was holding some pretty flowers. Then he was heading your way, his combat boots squeaking ever so slightly against the tile floor with each long stride. Bradley Bradshaw wasn't hesitating at all as he made his way directly to you while your students started talking again.
"It's Lieutenant Bradshaw!"
"I knew he'd come visit us ever since I asked him to!"
"Does this mean his deployment is over?"
"Why does he have flowers?"
He didn't stop until he was standing right in front of you, and the butterflies in your belly were fluttering so much, you were convinced you could float off of the floor. You weren't sure what else to say, so you simply whispered, "Bradley."
His smile grew as he said, "I love the way that sounds when you say it." You could only squeak in response, and his warm gaze flicked from your eyes down to your lips. At this rate you'd be a puddle at his feet in the next ten seconds. He swallowed hard, cheeks flushed as he leaned in closer, taking another small step forward until his boot gently bumped your shoe. His voice took on a raspier edge as said, "You told me you wanted me to kiss you as soon as I saw you."
He didn't stop slowly closing the distance, and when you reached out and let your fingers tangle with his, you whispered, "Please." Then you closed your eyes as his lips brushed feather light against yours. You gasped. He was here. Nothing had ever felt as good as this in your life. You opened your eyes to find him grinning right in front of you, and you chased him for another one of his dreamy kisses.
"Lieutenant Bradshaw kissed her!"
"I think they're in love!"
"They are definitely going to be girlfriend and boyfriend!"
Bradley wrapped his fingers around yours a little tighter as you and he laughed, and he ducked his head before looking up at your class. His cheeks were the most alluring shade of pink as he told them, "Hey, I hope you don't mind that I decided to surprise you and your teacher."
"We don't mind!" shouter Oliver as he was practically sitting on his desk now in excitement. All of the kids were bouncing with anticipation, and you couldn't stop smiling as Violet clapped her hands together.
"Great, because I brought my responses to your last batch of letters, too. I can't thank you enough for being my pen pals for the last few months. You made my time away from home a lot more fun." He turned to look at you before softly adding, "And you made coming back home feel really good."
You wanted to kiss him again. You wanted to run your fingers along his scars and press your lips to his skin in their wake. You wanted to bury your nose against his neck and inhale the smell of his skin and his uniform collar. You wanted to feel his mustache on your lips. Instead, because every eye in the room was on the two of you, you told him, "I'm really happy you're here." You tugged on his hand so he was standing front and center, and you turned to your kids and asked, "What do we say when we have a special guest visit us?"
"Thank you!" they all shouted in unison.
"That's right," you told them. Then you looked up at Bradley, and he handed you the flowers with a crooked little grin, and that's when you noticed he had a small notebook in his hand as well.Â
"Can I call each kid up to get their letter?" he asked, as if you would deny him anything at the moment. "Then I can put faces to all of the names."
You were still definitely at risk of melting. "You wrote each of them a personal letter again?" you asked him, holding your flowers to your chest and trying not to swoon.
"Yeah," he replied, opening his notebook to show you. He stood there, looking devastatingly sexy, tearing out a page for every kid. He called each of them up and talked to them for a minute. He remembered the name of Jayden's dog. He remembered that Violet loved neon-colored everything. He remembered that Henry said his grandfather was in the Navy. He remembered so much, and he was so willing to indulge all of their questions.
You just stood there with your flowers and watched this endearing man captivate all nineteen of you with his words. He let Oliver try on one of his insignia pins. He drew a diagram of an aircraft carrier on your white board. He met your gaze more often than not. He smiled at you every time he did. He told your students that the reason they were so smart was because you were such a good teacher. The butterflies were here to stay now.
When you looked around, you noticed that your kids were cherishing their personal notes just like you were your flowers. You didn't want this afternoon to end, and yet, as soon as the first bell rang at three o'clock, you jumped to attention. The sooner your students cleared out of the room for the weekend, the sooner you could hopefully have a few minutes alone with Bradley before he wanted to go home and rest.
"We need to pack up," you announced, finally setting the bouquet down on your desk while Bradly affixed his pin back on his uniform shirt.
"Do we have to?" whined Jayden. "Lieutenant Bradshaw like just got here!"
He had in fact been in your classroom for over two hours, but you couldn't blame them for wanting more. Bradley cleared his throat and looked at you as he said, "I could come back again?" with that sincere gaze you were already weak for. "Spend a few more hours answering questions? Maybe bring some engine parts with me?"
You bit your lip before you could whimper out loud, and he started to head in your direction. "We would love that," you told him.
"Yeah?" he asked you as your kids erupted into a rowdy mob, grabbing all of their belongings as the final bell rang.
"Mmhmm," you hummed, waving lazily to your students as they shouted their goodbyes to both you and Bradley. His steps had him reaching you right as the last few kids left your room, and you whispered, "You'll come back?"
He reached for your hand as he said, "I'll do anything you want, Gorgeous." He must have been able to read the needy look on your face, because when you tugged on his hand, he came all the way to you. His other hand ended up at your waist as his lips found yours, and this time, the feather light kisses deepened as you parted your lips. Bradley groaned softly, kissing you just right, and then he whispered, "I've been dying for this."
Your arms went around his neck, kissing him a little frantically, melting at his touch and the feel of his soft, wavy hair between your fingers. "Me too," you told him before pulling his bottom lip gently between yours. He backed you up until you bumped into your desk, and all you could think about was how good his weight would feel on top of you.
Your skin felt too hot when he finally broke the kiss, panting softly as you ran your thumb along his scars. "I didn't like not hearing from you the past two weeks," you told him, and his brown eyes softened even as his hold on you tightened a little bit. "It was... kind of scary."
"I didn't like it either," he told you. "And I was going to text you immediately when we docked this morning, but then I decided to just come here instead." He grinned as your fingers crept back up into his hair. "If they didn't let me sign in with my military ID in the front office, I don't know what I would have done. I just wanted to see you."
You kissed his chin and said, "Usually I hate surprises. But this one was perfect."
"Okay, see, that's good information to know," he rasped. "I only got a ride home long enough to throw my duffle in the front door and hop in my Bronco. I stopped for the flowers, and then I just wanted to get here with my notebook."
You tipped your head back and whispered, "How am I supposed to deal with how sweet you are?"
"Oh! That reminds me," he muttered, rubbing his hand along your back before releasing you and strolling over to where he left his notebook on Oliver's desk. The way your body wanted you to follow him was surprising, but it gave you a chance to look at him again from head to toe as you stood next to your desk. There was nothing out of place on this man, and you pressed your lips together as his bicep flexed against his shirt sleeve. He tore another sheet of paper from his notebook and said, "I have one more note to deliver."
He walked back over to you, and when he held it up with a hopeful look, you took it from him and read.
Hey, Gorgeous. I couldn't wait one more minute to see you. And now that I'm here, I don't want today to end. Is there any way I can convince you to let me take you out for our first official date tonight instead of tomorrow? Bradley
When you looked up from the page, his eyebrows were raised, and that crooked little grin was hovering close to the surface. "I know I said to plan for tomorrow, but I can't fucking wait that long."
You bit down on your lip, shocked by how much better today turned out to be than you could have ever imagined earlier this morning. "Yeah. You've convinced me, Bradley. Tonight sounds perfect."
With that, you were treated to a little smirk beneath his mustache. He carefully took the sheet of notebook paper from your hands, set it down next to the flowers on your desk and proceeded to kiss you senseless.
----------------------------
He's going to make me hyperventilate. Those kids were SO excited to have him in their classroom, but they were nowhere near as excited as Gorgeous! He's home! And he wants to have his beach picnic and takeout and makeout sesh immediately. Thanks @beyondthesefourwalls

Javy and Jake are stationed together
Nat gets stationed with Bradley whoâs heard his boyfriend (husband) complaining about her and befriends her.
Jake, Javy, and Nat all attend Top Gun together in â09 and Bradley is sent back to NAS San Diego. This is when Nat finds out about their relationship. Jake scrapes a win at top gun, very closely followed by Nat then Javy.
December 18 â10 DADT is repealed
They fly up to Vermont to get married in a courthouse and then âhoneymoonâ in NY December 21 â11 after taking time off for Christmas. Javy and Nat attend as their best man/woman and witnesses
The four get stationed on the USS. George Washington where the ârivalryâ between Jake and Bradley is established from their banter over comms and on the carrier. They spend 18 months there before theyâre all split up. (â11-â12)
Over the next 8 years the four are moved around occasionally stationed with each other. Jake and Bradley have a house together in Cali (Bradleyâs parents house) for any free time they have.
From â20 onward Jake is flying with the Vigilantes out of Lemoore and Bradley is on board the USS Theodore Roosevelt flying with the Golden Warriors.
â22 TG:M (Bradley is 38, Jake is 35, Mav is 60)
I spent a long time on the logistics of years and math so if you see any mistakes no you didnât <3

President Joe Biden is weighing more US defenses in the Middle East as the US prepares for an Iranian retaliation against Israel that officials say could include an attack on American forces.
In a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Thursday, Biden said the US would âsupport Israelâs defense against threats,â which would include ânew defensive US military deployments,â according to a readout of the call.[...]
The USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group, which includes the aircraft carrier, destroyers and other warships, has been operating in the Gulf of Oman in recent weeks. The strike group could potentially move into the Gulf of Aden or the Red Sea, where Navy warships have intercepted dozens of Houthi launches over the past several months.
The USS Wasp amphibious assault ship and several other Navy vessels are currently operating in the Mediterranean Sea. The group includes a Marine expeditionary unit capable of carrying out an evacuation of American citizens from Lebanon if the US ordered such an evacuation.
Iranâs Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) promised a âharshâ and âpainfulâ response to the assassination. Israel has not commented on the killing.[...]
Israel Defense Forces spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said that âinternational partnersâ have bolstered their forces in the region, though he did not specify which countries.
âWe have very good defense systems,â he said of Israelâs own preparations for an attack, âand in addition we have international partners who have reinforced their forces [deployed] in the region, to help us counter the threats.â
A Defense Department spokesman said Thursday the Pentagon has no information to provide on the movement of US forces or changes to force condition at this time.[...]
A coalition of countries, including Jordan and other Arab states, came together in April to share intelligence and intercept the Iranian barrage. But officials say itâs unclear if such a coalition could be stood up again so quickly and whether all of the countries are willing to participate once again.
Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah hinted that a coordinated attack on Israel could be in the works after Israel assassinated one of its top commanders in Beirut less than 24 hours before the killing of Haniyeh.
âBecause they have picked a fight with everyone, they donât know where the response will come from ⊠the response will come separately or coordinated,â he said in a speech Thursday.

Toss a coin for John Paul Jones
John Paul Jones has been lauded as the father of the US Navy since 1775. His influence and leadership were fundamental to the founding of our Navy and in many ways to the success of the American War of Independence.
The tomb of John Paul Jones in the U.S. Naval Academy Chapel's crypt, Annapolis, Maryland
The remains of John Paul Jones were interred in 1906 in a ceremony presided over by President Theodore Roosevelt in the crypt beneath the Naval Academy crypt. Since his death in 1792, John Paul Jones' remains had lain in a grave in France, where he also died.
The Tamanend Figurehead of the USS Delaware, 1817
Now, since 1906, it has been the custom of the Midshipmen of the Academy to deposit coins at his grave to ask and thank him for help in examinations and a successful graduation as well as a successful career. Another helper on campus is the statue of Tamanend, a peaceful Delaware chief of the Lenape Nation, to whom coins are also offered to request his help in examinations.

chapter four | masterlist | chapter six
The USS Theodore Roosevelt docks mid morning, and everyone aboard is eager to sleep in a proper bed tonight. Youâd take the XL Twin sized beds over sleeping on an aircraft carrier any day, especially if thereâs a Rooster Bradshaw in one with you. Youâve been so preoccupied with Rooster post-mission, having stayed the entire night with him. Youâd fallen asleep with him in the hospital bed and, despite protocol, the medics onboard didnât have the heart to ask you to leave.Â
Itâs not until you return to your sleeping quarters to pack up your things while everyone else is at breakfast that you come up for air. Youâve been totally wrapped up in your own world post-mission, that itâs almost time to offboard. After packing up your things, you meet Rooster, recently released from the carrierâs infirmary.Â
âYou ready?â he asks, a smile on his face as soon as he sees you.Â
âIâm ready,â you agree, taking his hand in yours.Â
As the two of you walk down the ramp, the familiar faces and bright shine of the San Diego sun make you realize that you really have been in your own world with Rooster â one where only you and he exist. You spot Coyote walking down the ramp with Halo, but what you see next catches you off guard. Itâs Hangman and Phoenix walking together in stride. You tug on Roosterâs arm, since youâre not too far behind them, signaling to him that you want to get closer.Â
Theyâre not arguing⊠theyâre not killing each other.Â
Theyâre⊠civil. Nice, almost.Â
And was that a smile? Did Phoenix just⊠smile at something the blonde had said?!
âOh my god!â you blurt out. The gasp escaping your lips causes both Hangman and Phoenix to turn around to look at you. The rest of the crew that are also in process of offboard walk around the four of you, shooting disgruntled looks as you block the walkway.Â
âSorry,â Rooster mutters to a passerby, before motioning for the four of you to at least step to the side.Â
You look from Hangman to Phoenix, and suddenly, you canât stop laughing.Â
An innocent bystander would have no idea, but you know the both of them like the back of your hand.Â
And itâs written all over their faces.Â
âOh my god!â you repeat yourself, your voice higher pitched as your jaw practically drops onto the ramp. âYou guys totally did it!â
Rooster snorts, thinking that this must be a joke. But when you continue laughing, when neither Hangman nor Phoenix fire back with some snarky remark or exclamation of denial, Rooster thinks you might be right.Â
âWait, what?!â he exclaims, looking from you, then to Jake and Natasha. âSeriously?!â
âWhiskey,â Jake groans, shaking his head. He exchanges glances with Phoenix before continuing with, âI swear to God, she's like a truffle pig but for hookups.â
His smartass comment only confirms your suspicions, and Nat is turning bright red, unable to make eye contact with you right now. Roosterâs jaw practically drops as you squeal with delight, ready to brag about your special skill.Â
âItâs a talent,â you shrug, proudly. âThat's how I knew all through the Naval Academy that Jake was a wh-.â
âHoooooookay. Youâre done Whiskey,â Jake cuts you off, practically dragging you away from Roosterâs grasp along with him so that he can give you a talkinâ to about whatâs appropriate to say when.Â
Rooster laughs again, watching as you and Jake bicker like siblings, before turning his attention over to Phoenix.Â
âYou wanna talk about it?â he asks, doubtful that sheâll say yes.
âNope,â she answers, popping the âpâ sound at the end of the word.Â
âFair enough,â Rooster accepts with a nod.Â
âWhat I do want to talk aboutâŠ. is you two,â Nat redirects, nodding her head towards where you and Jake have moved to. âDonât think I didnât notice she never came back to her bunk last night.â
The way that Rooster smiles is all she needs to know, and she considers this a huge win, exchanging a look with her best friend.Â
âThat good, huh?â she smirks, raising an eyebrow.Â
âNo! We havenât even-, you know,â Bradley blushes, suddenly shy.Â
âDamn. You really are ready to settle down, huh?â Nat responds, as she reads his expression.Â
Rooster nods, returning his attention back to you again. He watches you playfully punch Jake in the chest, causing him to double over.Â
âSheâs great, Nat. Sheâs⊠I donât know. Sheâs really fucking great,â he sighs, completely and totally infatuated with you.Â
By the time Rooster and Phoenix catch up with you and Jake, you and Jake have finished your conversation â one where you mostly congratulated him and told him that she was the best heâd ever get so he better not fuck up.Â
âBreakfast, anyone?â Nat asks, her eyes moving from you to Rooster.Â
âNot you,â she adds, by the time her eyes make it to Jake.Â
He rolls his eyes at her comment, but inside, he loves the fire she has within her.Â
âUh⊠yeah. Give me a second?â you request, shooting Rooster a look.Â
âYeah, weâll give you guys a second,â Nat says, practically tugging Jake along with her.Â
You watch as they go, a few strides ahead of you and Rooster so you can talk.Â
âSo⊠thatâs kind of wild,â Rooster mentions, in reference to Nat and Jake.Â
âYes and also sort of⊠not surprising?â you suggest, earning a quizzical look from Rooster.Â
Instead of continuing the conversation about Nat and Jake, youâd much rather talk about what could happen when you get back to the barracks. You take a beat, ready to shift the conversation.
âYou wanna get out here? I could⊠tell Nat no. Skip breakfastâŠ. We could catch up to Hangman and Phoenix⊠considering they beat us to the punch?â you propose, raising an eyebrow.Â
Normally, youâd never cancel on a friend for a guy, but after two weeks and a near-deadly mission, the sexual tension between the two of you is palpable.Â
âAs tempting as that offer sounds, I gotta go to the medical center on base for a second check up. Make sure I get a clean bill of health on land too,â Rooster replies, unable to hide how disappointed he is that he has to do this first.Â
âUgh, leave it to me to get cockblocked by the US Navy⊠again,â you groan, eliciting a laugh from Rooster. âYou want me to go with you?Â
âNo itâs okay. Go to breakfast with Nat,â he says, nodding his head towards her and Jake. Â
You smirk, âYou just want the hot gossip donât you, Badshaw?â
âFuck yeah. And you better send me live updates,â he begs, earning a laugh from you too. Â
You reach out, placing a gentle kiss on his lips, before Roosterâs wrapping an arm around your shoulders and youâre heading back to the barracks. Natâs already got a place picked out that she texts you with a message suggesting you invite Halo too. After changing into your civvies, you and Nat decide to head out together to the beachside diner only a few blocks from the Hard Deck.Â
Hangman: So I make you cum twice and still donât get invited to breakfast? Whatâs a guy gotta do?
Phoenix: Try for three next time and I might consider extending the invitation.
Hangman: So you're saying thereâs a next time? ;)
Natasha rolls her eyes at the last text, putting her phone away as the waitress approaches your table with the drip coffees youâve just ordered. You both mutter a quick, polite thank you before taking them, fixing your coffee just the way you like it.Â
âHalo didnât want to come?â Nat asks, curiously. Â
âSaid sheâs FaceTiming with her girlfriend but will join us in a little bit when sheâs done,â you answer. âBut itâs good because it gives us time to catch up! You canât keep me waiting like this and donât even think youâre getting away with not telling me everything.â
âEverything?â she asks, raising an eyebrow.Â
âOkay, maybe not⊠everything,â you reply with a chuckle. âBut enough is enough! Spill, bitch. What the hell happened between you and Hangman on that carrier?!â
She sighs, âI-, I have no fucking idea.â Taking a drink from her coffee mug, she leans back, cradling the hot cup of coffee in her hands as she racks her brain for any kind of explanation. âMaybe it was the high of the mission⊠or something⊠but we were both looking for you⊠and then we ran into each other. And⊠I donât know. I was going to take a shower and he wouldnât move out of my way⊠and then one thing led to another and suddenly weâre fucking in on the bathroom sink!â
âOh my god!â you squeal, covering your mouth with your hand as you do.Â
âI mean⊠itâs Hangman. I-, I think it was just a heat of the moment thing. Nothing serious,â she says, brushing it off as if thereâs no possible way it could be anything more than that.Â
âSo⊠just a one time thing?â you ask, eyeing her curiously. Youâre trying your best to get a read on her, but youâre not sure if she even knows how she feels about it.Â
âWell. Technically a two time thing if you count the shower after,â she smirks, taking another sip of her coffee.Â
âNatasha!â you gasp, a devilish smile on her face.Â
âSo⊠do you think itâs going to happen again? Do you want it to happen again?â you gush, excitedly.Â
âI-,â she starts, before letting out a big sigh. âI donât know.â You watch as she places her coffee mug down on the table, her eyes fixed to the ceramic mug. âDoes that make sense?â
âDefinitely,â you empathize with her, considering youâd probably find yourself confused in that situation too. âItâs Jake. I-. Definitely.â
âLetâs go dancing tonight,â she changes the subject, not wanting to talk more about Hagman. âWhat was that place we went to last time weâre in San Diego? Tango Del Rey? I know Roosterâs dying to see how you move.â
âOh my god,â you groan with a playful eye roll.Â
âBut yes!â you agree. âDancing sounds great. See if the rest of the Dagger Squad want to come with. Maybe end the night at the Hard Deck?âÂ
âYeah,â Natasha replies.Â
âHi! Sorry Iâm late,â Callie interrupts, as soon as she enters the diner in search of both you and Nat. âUnlike the two of you, I have a civilian partner that doesnât understand half of what we do, and just needs to hear that Iâm okay at the end of every mission.Â
âThe two of us?â Nat asks, thrown by what Halo has said.Â
âYeah, because you and Hangman are together, right?â she asks Phoenix, and you almost spit out your coffee.Â
Thereâs such a genuine innocence in how she asks the question that you know sheâs not trying to fuck with either of you.Â
Natâs face blushes a few shades darker while you try your best to get your coffee down without any of it coming out of your nose. You wait for your fit of laughter to pass before swallowing, giving you the freedom to now laugh out loud.Â
âWhat? Did I say something wrong?â Halo asks looking from you to Nat, then back to you again.Â
âNo, Halo. No, you said everything right,â you manage to get out, as your laughter continues to grow.Â
âSorry, I didnât mean to assume. I just thought you guys were together. I mean⊠he stayed with you overnight in the hospital after the bird strike and heâs so clearly into you,â she apologizes, explaining why she had come to the conclusion in the first place.Â
Nat is glaring at you as you continue to laugh, like she hates the fact that youâre not the only one who sees this thing between the two of them.Â
âCallie, you have nothing to apologize for,â you reassure her. You shoot Nat a glance, knowing that youâre stirring the pot as you continue with, âAnd youâd only have been wrong if youâd said something twenty four hours ago.â
âWhiskey!â Phoenix exclaims, shooting daggers at you for airing her dirty laundry.Â
You snicker, on a power trip from the sweet, sweet feeling of being right.Â
Natasha shakes her head, eager to change the subject. She stops paying attention to you, putting all of her attention on Halo as she says:
âHey, Callie. What do you think about going dancing tonight? Think the Dagger Squad would be up for it?â she proposes, signifying that sheâs done with this conversation about her and Jake.Â
âI love dancing! Sounds like a great way to celebrate,â Callie agrees, eagerly.Â
As the waitress comes back around, the three of you order stacks of pancakes and plates of eggs, potatoes, and bacon, decompressing in the beachside diner. Itâs nice to take a breath, now that the mission is over â now that you have a whole week off, due to the mission being moved up. Itâs not till the end of breakfast that you realize your heart and your belly are both now full.Â
Your phone buzzes, signaling that you have a new text, unable to hide the smile on your face as you realize itâs from Rooster.Â
âUh oh. I know that look,â Nat teases, instantly knowing who itâs from. Haloâs eyes light up, catching on as well.Â
âAsk him if he wants to go dancing!â Halo encourages, as you open up your phone to read the texts.Â
Rooster: Looks like we got the greenlight.Â
You: For all activities? ;)
Bradley: Yes maâam. Anything in particular you have in mind?
You: How does dancing sound?
Bradley: ⊠Dancing?
And thatâs how Rooster Bradshaw ends up here, spinning someoneâs abuela in a circle as the salsa band plays on. While most of the other aviators have found a dance partner in each other, or another attendee at the club, Bradley has, of course, found himself taken under the wings a group of older ladies made up of abuelas and tias who are teaching him how to salsa properly.Â
You giggle, unable to take your eyes off of him, even though youâre technically dancing with Jake. You find it incredibly endearing that heâs managed to find himself adopted by the regulars â all of which continue to make comments like que guapo about him, his mustache and his printed shirts.Â
Roosterâs eyes meet yours from across the room, practically beaming in your direction as the ladies cheer him on for mastering the three step dance. You smile back, grinning ear to ear.Â
You cannot wait to get him alone tonight, but salsa is a social dance, so the stolen glances, the smiles from across the room, and all the sexy build up will have to do for now.Â
Jake picks up on the fact that your attention is elsewhere, and he wouldnât be himself if he didnât have something smart to say about it.Â
âYouâre not even paying attention to me,â Jake complains, twirling you around the dance floor as best as he can.Â
âAwwww⊠who knew you were such a softie, Hangman?â you tease him, followed by a loud âow!â when Jake steps on your feet⊠again.Â
âWell, thatâs what you get, kid,â he fires back, grumpily. Â
âIâm trying to help you here, Seresin! But youâre not letting me,â you point out, an annoyed tone in your voice as you try to teach him the steps. âIf youâd learn to follow for once, damn it!â
âIâm just saying⊠think these guys need to come down to Texas⊠we can show âem how itâs really done,â Jake grumbles, as you try to coach him into being better at this.Â
âHate to break it to you, bud, but two steppinâ isnât nearly as sexy as salsa,â you point out. âAnd you canât always just do things youâre good at, yâknow?â
âWho says?â Jake asks, playfully.Â
âOh my god,â you groan, rolling your eyes at your best friendâs comment.Â
Jake steals a glance in Natâs direction. He knows youâre only trying to help â only trying to give him a little bit of a head start considering Natasha seems to be a pro at this. You know enough to get by, but Nat grew up competitive ballroom dancing, and sheâs practically dancing circles around every single person in the dancehall. Turns out, Coyote is an incredible salsa dancer as well, the two of them taking the dance floor by storm like theyâre a part of the competition team. They glide, spin, and shake their hips to the music in ways that you canât even imagine, captivating anyone and everyone that watches.Â
At the end of each song, Coyote and Phoenix have switched partners, sometimes dancing together for a few more songs, and other times sharing their gifts with other people here on the dance floor. Itâs usually how it goes at these kinds of things.Â
The song ends and Jake releases you. You can see that the band has finished their set, switching over to a DJ. Of course, in a place like this, the transitions are smooth, going right from the band to the stereo system seamlessly. Youâre practically shoving Jake in Natâs direction, partnering up with Fanboy before Jake can chicken out. He stands behind her, watching her thank her last dance partner, a man who seems to be on the competition team here at Tango Del Rey.Â
Natasha Trace wears a white floral dress, with a long slit up the front, exposing her long legs â the ones he had his mouth on just yesterday. Her hair, softly curled, falls just above her shoulders, and her hair is parted, pinned back on only one side makes her look like an old Hollywood movie star.Â
âPhoenix. What do you say we have that dance now?â Jake drawls, his voice causing her to turn around.Â
âI should warn you,â she parrots, mimicking his language on the carrier as she takes a few steps forward in her heels. âI'm an incredible dancer.â
âIâve noticed,â he replies, the corner of his lips curling into a crooked smile.Â
âYou think youâre ready for me, Bagman?â she challenges, holding her hand out to him.Â
âOnly one way to find out,â he smirks, grabbing her hand and pulling her in close.Â
As the song begins, the DJ set starting off strong with a Bad Bunny hit, Nat finds herself surprised that Jake does pretty well for himself, leading her in the three step salsa. The way his hands feel against her feel like theyâre burning her skin in the most delicious of ways. She feels him lift their conjoined hands so that he can spin her around, smiling as he does. She knows this one â listens to the lyrics as they move together, taking note of how appropriate the feel:
âIt's just for a little while / Mami, don't get used to it / Because love can be so beautiful / But there's always somĐ”thing that interrupts it.â
Because what the hell were they doing anyways? And how could Hangman of all people make her feel this way? And there was no possible way that this wasnât just temporary. Was she even willing to take the risk on him?
Instead of saying something, overthinking it, fucking this up before it could even begin, Nat decides that tonight, sheâll just dance with him.Â
Across the room, as the song ends, you thank Fanboy (also an incredible dancer), before going to find Bradley. You canât hide the grin on your face as you see him thanking the ladies that seem to have taken him under their wing.Â
âLadies, I hope you donât mind,â you begin, nodding towards Bradley. Â
âAre you the girlfriend? La novia? Heâs been talking about you all night,â one of the women exclaims, gleefully.Â
âNot yet, Daniela. But Iâm working on it,â Bradley replies, following his words up with a playful, âshhh!âÂ
You giggle, âYou wanna dance, Bradshaw?âÂ
You offer out your hand, and he takes it, earning cheers and smiles from Bradleyâs new friends. You canât take your eyes off of his chocolate brown ones as you lead him across the dance floor. You feel one of Bradleyâs hands slide against your low back, pulling you in closer to him as you begin to move to the music.Â
âLooks like you made some new friends,â you say, batting your eyes at him.Â
âAnd youâre gonna thank me later because I learned a lot,â he replies, earning a flirtatious giggle from you.Â
âThis your thing? You make new friends everywhere you go?â you continue to banter with him.Â
âGuilty,â he admits, a light blush running across his cheeks. âThe supermarket. The gas stationâŠâÂ
âOh God, I bet you were popular in high school too,â you groan, jokingly. Â
As he spins you around, taking you into his arms, youâre all smiles. You move your hips in perfect time with his. You can feel your heart pounding in your chest with every step â and itâs not the few beers youâve already had. Youâve been waiting for this moment all night â not that dancing with the rest of the aviators hasnât been fun â but you have to admit that Bradley Bradshaw makes your heart flutter.Â
After a few songs spent in Bradleyâs arms, he slows you down, leaning close, his lips just grazing the top of your ear lobe. You can feel both of his large hands on the small of your back, pulling you into him a little closer.Â
âI know we just got started here but⊠what do you say we get out of here?â he whispers in your ear, the raspiness of his voice sending chills down your spine.
âWhatâd you have in mind?â you ask, unable to find the smile that spreads across your lips.Â
âMaybe⊠one more drink at the Hard Deck⊠then how about we go back to my room?â
âPlease,â you practically beg him, nodding along as encouragement. .Â
And in that moment, you donât care that everyone is watching, that you and Bradley have yet to begin, you kiss him right then and there in the middle of the dance floor. Your passionate lip lock earns a few looks from other dancers, and you can hear a few of the other aviators point it out with a few whoops, hollers, and catcalls in response. As you pull away from the kiss, his face still cradled in your hands, you ask him:
âCool if I go find Jake and Nat? Say goodbye?â
âTotally. But Iâd be careful if I were you. They were practically fucking on the dance floor a minute ago,â he replies with a groan.Â
âGross,â you scoff, even though you could care less.Â
But you donât find Jake with Nat, spotting her on the dance floor doing all kinds of tricks with Coyote again. You wonder where Jake went, pushing through a crowd of people before you spot him upstairs. You hurry up the flight of stairs that leads to the balcony, finding him perched there, leaning up against the railing and nursing a Lonestar.Â
âHey! Rooster said you and Nat were practically fucking on the dance floor. Anything I should know?â you comment, as you approach the blonde.Â
He smirks, taking another drink of his tallboy.Â
âSo you and Rooster, huh?â Jake asks back so that he doesnât have to answer your question.
And because, of course his best friend would fall for fuckinâ Bradshaw.Â
âYeah, me and Rooster,â you answer, truthfully, sliding into the space next to him. âWeâre actually going to head out. Thatâs why I was looking for you. Didnât want to go without saying goodbye.â
Jake searches your face. Thereâs nothing but genuine admiration and honesty, and itâs given you a glow. He can see how happy you are, and heâs not going to rain on your parade just because he and the guy have some kind of unspoken rivalry. Playfully, he bumps his shoulder against you, earning a giggle from you. You return the shoulder bump before returning to your previous question.Â
You watch Jake, following his gaze out over the dancehall. Natâs finally taken a break, crowded around the bar as Bob tells some wild story to her, Fanboy, and Payback. Itâs so freaking obvious that itâs painful: he canât take his eyes off of Natasha Trace.Â
âYou should tell her how you feel,â you chime in, bumping his shoulder with yours againÂ
Jake shoots you a glance from the side â the kind that says, âwhat the hell are you talking about?â
âYou forget that Iâve known you since you were twenty, Seresin. And I've spent the last two weeks watching you pine after her,â you point out.Â
âI do not pine!â he protests.Â
âYes you do!â you push back.Â
He waits a few beats, thinking it over, weighing his options.Â
âWhat if⊠sheâs not into it?â he finally asks, dragging out each word like theyâre heavy on his lips.Â
âWhy donât you go find out?â you encourage. You give his shoulder a friendly squeeze before turning to go.Â
âBe safe, kid!â Jake calls after you.Â
âThanks, Dad,â you scowl, your feet hitting the top of the stairs as you do.Â
Jake enjoys the view and his beer on the balcony for a little longer, taking a few moments to himself. The DJ set is about halfway through, and he notices that the aviators, previously crowded around the bar, seem to have returned to the dance floor.Â
Itâs now or never, Seresin, he thinks to himself.Â
Heâs practically working himself up as his feet carry himself down the stairs and back onto the dance floor. Heâs surprised to find Phoenix without a partner, just moving to the music as the song playing ends. He watches as her face changes, her lips curling into a smile as the new song begins. She throws her head back with a laugh, her eyes settling on Jake as he stands there in front of her.Â
âThis oneâs not a salsa. Think you can keep up, Bagman?â she asks, holding her hand out, beckoning for him to join her.Â
âCanât be that difficult,â he says, looking around the room.Â
âIt wonât be. As long as you let me lead,â she fires back.Â
âHa!â he lets out an arrogant laugh, as he takes her hand.Â
âYou let me lead, and Iâll make you look really good,â she replies, almost as if itâs a challenge.Â
âDeal,â Jake agrees.Â
âSo itâs kinda like salsa: three steps left, then three right,â she coaches him, lowering her voice so that sheâs practically purring in his ear. Nat wraps an arm around his waist, pulling him close into her. The edges of their faces are pressed together, and Jake mimicks her, sliding an arm around her waist too.
âOnly bachataâŠâ she says, beginning to walk in a circle. She steps forward, so that theyâre practically chest to chest, keeping the rhythm with her feet as she adjusts their positioning. â... is danced from here.â
Jake gulps, realizing that sheâs practically straddling one of his legs, her forehead now pressed against his. He lets her lead, watching as she moves around him from this fucking close: a sway of her hips in perfect time, a circle with her shoulders till sheâs body rolling against the front of him, and then theyâre taking three steps right, and three steps left.Â
âJeez, TashâŠâ he groans, earning a wicked smile from her.Â
Heâs not sure where that came from. Heâs never called her that before. But then again, theyâd never let the tension between them go this far.Â
Thereâs no way this is actually the dance. Sheâs totally fucking with me. Testing my patience, right? Jake thinks to himself, feeling his pants becoming a little bit tighter as she moves against him.Â
But Jake looks around the room, shocked to see everyone on the dance floor moving this sensually too. Hell, sheâs practically riding his thigh in front of everyone and heâs just letting her.Â
âThe hellâd you learn how to dance like this?â he asks, biting back a moan.Â
âWouldnât you like to know?â she smirks cockily.Â
She holds up an arm for him to spin, creating distance so they both can. When she returns to Jake, this time, she presses her back against him, swaying her hips against his in perfect time.Â
Itâs pure fucking torture.Â
âI-, I would,â he mumbles into her ear, ever sarcastic bone in his body giving way to the growing erection heâs got in his pants.Â
She chuckles, spinning herself out, then back into his arms in their original position.Â
âThatâs not the question you should be asking, Bagman,â she says, glancing down at his zipper.Â
Heâs trying his best to focus on the steps â and not stepping on her feet â but his concentration is getting incredibly blurry with how sheâs moving against him. With how close she is. With how fucking hot he finds this. As they move, three steps right, three steps left, his hands begin traveling lower, pressing her against him from her low back, from the top of her ass, and Natasha Trace knows exactly what sheâs doing.Â
âFuck,â Jake groans, feeling as she rolls against him, the song beginning to end. Heâs frozen in a moment in time and he canât let go of her â not yet.Â
âCan I take you home?â he finally asks.Â
âI thought youâd never ask,â she replies, dragging her arm across his chest as she begins to walk in a circle behind him. Once she reaches his back, she pulls him in close, leaning in to whisper:
âMeet me in the car in five.â
